the courthouse in new york, take us through the significance of what michael cohen is admitting and how it fits into the broader context. >> i think the bottom line is yet again, we have michael cohen coming in and admitting that he basically was trying to protect the president, someone he was extremely loyal to, someone he worked for, and really was to protect him from the russia investigation. you can't be any more clear from what we heard from michael cohen's mouth today at the courthouse and the documents. this was being done to limit the investigation and try to protect the president right before the height of the political season and campaign and the iowa caucus and first primary. all of this obviously was a concern for michael cohen and not only michael cohen, but other people around the president who were concerned about the impact of this investigation, perhaps the

optics and other things. we are seeing people lie, this cover up. michael cohen is little by little unraveling this cover up that we have seen in this investigation. the other thing i think that is notable is what we heard from michael cohen's lawyer is he is cooperating and that he is going to continue to cooperate with the special counsel and with the u.s. attorney here in new york. whether or not the special counsel's investigation ends and this is likely to go on in new york from the u.s. attorney's office and fbi who are overseeing parts was investigation. >> a very important day. straight from the courthouse. come back to us if you get new information. live in buenos aires where the president is on the way. the timing is interesting to say the least. big news from the president. not just calling michael cohen a

significance. michael cohen said these conversations did not end in january. they went deep into the election year. he admitted he lied to congress and it matters to the president why and how? >> it matters because the president said and talked about how he had no business interest in russia and told the american public there was no relationship with russia that really mattered to him and it turns out according to michael cohen, this is a version of events we know the special counsel, robert mueller believes this version. michael cohen said deep into the campaign, after the time that the president is a president trumpive nominee of the party, they are discussing this project. that's a big deal. what it tells us is beyond what this affects the president, but it also may cross the red line that the president set forth. he said if prosecutors start

9:08 am
>> we're have to remember this information, this court document is really limited to cohen's lies. they are laying out to contradict cohen's lies. he did talk to the president more than three times and he briefed the family members and michael cohen likely told the special counsel's office a lot more about that. >> that's the key point. sometimes it's a crumb, and sometimes it's a loaf. they knew the president's team were going to say michael cohen is a liar. you even admit he is a liar. they did this in the rick gates trial and the e-mails.
