the crash. a full investigation could take up to two years. we'll stay on top of in story. to our vowers thanks for watching. you can follow me on twitter and instagram at the @the wolf blitzer. erin burnett outfront starts right now. >> outfront next, bare knuckle brawl, trump and biden trading kban belows. the two in iowa and about to speak any moment. plus don junior naeg a second appearance before the senate intelligence committee. what do they want from the president's son? they may be the most stunning comments trump made about north korea. why some tonight are asking, what country's team is trump on? let's go outfront. >> and good evening, i'm erin burnett, outfront trump and biden blow for blow. both men in iowa. trading barbs all day and expected to take the stage any moment. and before the president left washington today trump was up
4:01 pm
and running attacking biden. zbloots i'd rather run against -- i think biden than anybody. i think he is the weakest mentally. i like running against people weak mentally. joe is the weakest up here. the others have more energy. i don't agree with their policies. but i think joe is a man -- i call him 1% joe, because until obama kim along he didn't do well. >> trump referring to biden's last showing in the iowa caucuses. but he is doing well right now. a new poll biden topping trump by 13 points. perhaps that's the reason the spt fired up about biden. as for biden it didn't take long for him to respond. >> he embraces dictators like kim jong un, who who is is a damn murderer and a thug. the one thing they agree on, joe biden smunt be president. he quotes kim jong un, i agree
4:02 pm
with kim, he is right about biden. i think i'm either low iq or slow. i don't know what i am. slow joe biden. give me -- i mean, this is like out of alness wonderland. >> moments from now trump and biden expected to take the stage. according to prepared remarks. baden is going to mention president trump dozens of times tonight and he has been talking about him all day. he appears to be doing it for an audience of one. >> apparently, he had my speech on air force. one et cetera fascinated. >> of course if you listen to trump it's biden who is fascinated with him. >> when a man has to mention my name 76 times in a speech, that means he is in trouble. now, i have to tell you he is a different guy. he looks different than he used to. he acts different than he used to. he is even slower than he used
4:03 pm
to be. so i don't know. but when he mentions my name that many times i guess i should be complimented. >> okay. trump obviously trying to portray biden as slow and aging every second he can. which is surprising given that biden is 76 and trump turns 73 friday. but trump trying to turn this into a an issue oh on friday. the idea of questioning biden's health may be familiar if you watch fox news. >> joe biden is tired. he does not have the energy for this they are hiding him like they hid hillary. >> shaun he is. >> you start to go, you know we haven't seen joe a lot. maybe he has hidden health issues. he is always wearing an overcoat. >> all right i want to say there are known known health issues it's a baseless line of attack that worked for trump in 2016 too. >> folks, you think hillary would be able to stand up here for an hour and do this?
4:04 pm
i don't think so. for one thing, he doesn't have the strength or the stamina. >> as a woman makes a speech 15 minutes he goes home and goes to bed. >> we have both trump and biden covered together tonight with our reporters in aye. katlyn colin. ar let siems with biden. the president is focused on biden today, katlyn. >> yes, he is. these two men have been trading insults for weeks. but things took a sharp personal turn now they are both in owi. even though erin they didn't come face-to-face within the state. and in fact didn't come within 100 miles of each other. we know based on reporting the president has been phoning aides and allies in recent weeks. sometimes before 7:00 a.m. asking if they think biden will be a threat to him in the 2020 election. that's not awl li all of course there was the internal presidents of the president's campaign showing him langing
4:05 pm
behind biden critical to win in 2020 even though the president sometimes doubted his own numbers, even though they come from his campaign. of course, erin what this boils down to is the president is worried that joe biden could pose a threat to the blue collar voter appeal that he had in 2016 and critical primary states like iowa. so that is why you are seeing the president ramp up attacks on biden even though advisers have said you don't need to do that until he is the nominee. the president is making clear he is enjoying having this fight. you can expect him to continue to ramp up the attacks on joe biden even in this room at a fund raiser with me tonight. >> thank you very much katlyn. let's go to ar rhett. what it was the president repeated biden's name over and over. more than 76 times if you include the pronounce he. >> biden throughout the day has been going after president trump. this plays into his general
4:06 pm
election strategy. since day one biden has been trying to frame in as a campaign between himself and president trump. trying to draw in president trump into some of the debate, little battles back and forth with him. biden has refrained from engaging directly with exactic rivals. he refrained from engaging in those intraparty debates last week. he waded into the abortion debate as he switched sides on that issue. but right now what biden is trying to sell is one, he has the most experience to lead the country, and two he has the ability to take on president trump. and what the former vice president is banking on, he is betting that voters are valuing elect ability and can see bidden in the fights engaging with the president as one willing to take on trump directly. the criticisms and attacks will not let up. >> thank you very much. and let's go to mark preston senior politicking analyst. a member of president trump's
4:07 pm
2020 re-elect advisory counsel. so mark, are both of them getting a bit ahead of themselves with in preview of the general election tonight, dueling rallies, same time in owi, talking about each other all day. >> a couple of things, one if you are joe biden, a democrat running right now against 20 plus other exacts every day has to be election day in the sense that you have to prove to your base that you are willing to take on donald trump head on. that's what we see from joe biden. certainly in a state like iowa that trump won back in 2016. but barack obama had won in 2008 and 2012. joe biden doing it he has to do it to stay relevant. on the other hand donald trump in some ways is elevating joe biden by talking about him. he would be better served backing that off a bit and talking about his accomplishments. that would do baier for him he can't help hipps. >> senator i want to play something that trump said and then biden said in response. here they are.
4:08 pm
>> that reminds me of crooked hillary. she did the same thing. when it came time to vote any all said, you know, she doesn't like trump very much. but what else does she stand for in? same thing with sleepy joe. he is a sleepy guy. >> eight years -- eight years he will fundamentally change the nature of who we are as a country. >> senator, do you worry that boyden is making this all about trump, that trump actually has a point which is if all you can do is talk about me and opposition to me you're going to lose. >> well the point is this would be -- this would be entertainment if it weren't so serious if the future of the world were not at stake. and the fact of the matter is we have huge issues of everything from climate change to immigration to children being separated from their parents and waste going to happen with the middle class and this this country. we have the huge issues and the two guys duking it out like you are in a school yard somewhere.
4:09 pm
i support joe biden because i know him to be a selfless individual who cares about working people, cares about poor people which has always been my concern. the fact of the the matter is the contrast could not be more stark between someone who abselfless in their dedication to helping everybody and another individual for whom it's all paternal. for the. it's all about him and what he cares about personally. and i think that frankly the american people deserve better. >> so, rob, here is the thing a source familiar with the thing of trump advisers with the fact that he is talking about bide. . biden talks about me 76 times. retires count his times. it's a mutual fascination society to use the president's word. okay, is trump making a mistake by elevating biden? or does he want to elevate biden because he thinks biden is weak even though the polls don't show. >> i think he shouldn't pay as
4:10 pm
much as attention as he is because he is has a great record. he won 93, the first republican to win the state in since 1980. the agricultural industry there is getting somebody who is actually doing something for them and renegotiating nafta, which biden has to run on in a state like iowa that hurt iowans tremendously. and i also think bide isn't not the strongest. if you asked me that a month ago i would have said he is now i think the true biden is showing. the hyde amendment is he will do anything and say anything if you stuck to convictions on that might have caused him problems during the primary but i think in the general election he would have gotten more respect from people and maybe even some anti-trump vote tors fine a home with thiem but that's not there anymore. >> mark to the point know about how strong is biden, right, the quinnipiac poll that showed bidden betting trump by 13 points. that is a national poll. that's whattive. bigger win than any other
4:11 pm
democratic candidate has over trump in the poll, an independent voters especiallily restraining. 58 to 28% victory over trump. and obviously independent voters are people saying they are independent voters could be the see here. should trump be worried about biden? >> yes. and here is why. two things. one you have a democratic party right now that is incredibly fractured and at some point they have toll coalesce. right now it's behind joe biden. less than 18 months away. a lot of road ahead. but is joe biden the person bringing the party together? perhaps. secondly all you have to do is look at states that trump won. you know in in 2016. you look the pennsylvania, ohio, michigan, wisconsin, all states where joe biden can do well -- would be expected to do well and that's why trump is wrd about him. >> senator, barack obama, what trump is doing is making this personal making people afraid of joe biden in a way he did with hillary clinton. let me play again the president and one of his favorite hosts at fks news attacking biden.
4:12 pm
>> i have to tell you he is a different guy. he looks different than he used to. he acts different than he used to. he is even slower than he used to be. >> joe biden is tired. he does no have the sflrg. >> he is not angry. >> senator what's your response to that? >> my response is tariffs. my response is it talk to the farm arers in owi and ask them if they are doing better this year than last year. the fact of the matter is that dish dsh that this president has been a stafrt on so many different fronts. and he is going to have to run on that record. which is the reality of it. and i think that people -- at the end of the day voters are smart, they will figure out whether or not in the -- the ronald reagan world they are worse off now than they were previously. that being said, i think it's going to be a democratic victory in 2020. >> so robert with those attacks appropriate though?
4:13 pm
keep talking about how he is slow or not well. this is baseless at this point. >> well is he an existential threat? i mean that's a worse attack because that's saying you're worse than anyone could imagine. you are a threat to our nation. >> you're saying eight more -- eight years and the country would break apart. >> i mean here is the question mark that joe biden does not have. we know what his past is. we know his voting record. we know what did he for eight years. >> do you think it's okay to talk about him being slow and old and someone saying he is wearing his coat around. the stuff is all b.s. >> you know it's a campaign. and if they can't take that kind of abuse or heat then they shouldn't be running. joe bide isn't a pro process. he has been through it he lobbed it. he will lob more. but on the polls what's not getting played. we know the battle-ground states always be battlegrounds that trump can mold a and other states in the mix that trump is doing better than expected, minnesota, nevada, new mexico. these states are not talked about. but trump is doing better than
4:14 pm
expected. and you know to say he is down so much to biden right now is not fair, because at this .6 years ago obama was down by 8 points. and trump, again on election day was down 7 points to hillary clinton. so we have 16 months to go. >> mark, final word, though, should the biden campaign be concerned about whether the attacks on health will be effective? because they were effective against hillary? >> yeah, and here is the concern from the biden campaign should come from, is that he starts to field some of the attacks from those within his own party who want that nomination that's when things could goat are get dirty we are seeing a democratic the party as not as chummy as it is right now. >> they're already attacking him on his age. >> a lot more i'd expect. >> thank you all very much. and next don junior headed back to testify. before the senate intelligence committee tomorrow. what do senators want exactly? plus president trump says he would not allow the cia to use

. tonight donald trump junior preparing in the hot seat. a source confirming to cnn that he will testify behind closed doors in front of the senate intelligence committee. this after the republican chairman of this that committee richard burr subpoenaed don junior. outfront now former nixon white house counsel john dean and white house correspondent for american radio networks april ryan. don junior didn't want to come and testify. this was a fight. his father didn't want him to do. but the republican chairman burr made sure he did. what do you think they need from him. >> well it's not clear, but there are a couple of real possibilities. one he refused when he was there last time to testify about a subject that they think he has exclusive knowledge on. and the more troublesome one is there is inconsistent testimony with other facts they've gantd. and that could possibly put him in jeopardy. >> right in jeopardy of perjury,
4:20 pm
right? >> right. so april how significant -- how significant is the testimony tomorrow then? obviously to this point of perjury, it is under oath. >> it's very significant. this is about clarity. they want clarification on something or some things. but when you look at this, what really stands out more, not the fact that he is coming back, it's the fact that he is coming back under conditions. this is not just i'm going to testify. they had to negotiate. >> yes. >> to get conditions to have conditions put on the table for them to do this. that stands out more. and you have to remember that don junior is not part of the administration, not immunity to jail time. coming back can coined of help him in a way or may not. but he is not immune to jail time at all. >> and that obviously is -- could be hugely significant, john, especially in light of the fact that you have all the cases -- a dozen cases mueller referred to.

we don't know who is involved with them or don junior or not we know the president was upset when senator burr subpoenaed his son. >> my son is a very good person, works very hard and frankly for my son after being exonerated to now get a subpoena to go again and speak again after close to 20 hours of telling everybody that would listen about a nothing meeting. yeah, i'm pretty surprised. >> to be clear, obviously, he wasn't exonerated. how concerned during are do you think the president is about tomorrow, john. >> it's hard to believe he wouldn't be somewhat concerned. this is -- this is in the a -- while it's a negotiated return it's also a compulsory return. the subpoena had to be either settled some way or he was going to be compelled to come through

the courts. and they obviously didn't want the fight. they were going to lose it. the president is undoubtedly concerned. there is also a possibility, erin, that he could go to that committee and plead the fifth if he hasn't waived it already, if they open up an area that he feels jeopardy. >> april, how concerned is the president? >> well, the president is very concerned. any time the president talks about it extensively he is concerned. he has talked about it -- this is his names sake if you mean one, number two, don junior his hand is in a lot of things. the request he is what did he know? what did he say before? what will he say now if he says something. the president is very concerned. this is not as elijah cummings said, just about russia. this is about a litany of things. we have to wait and find out what's going on to see what's happening. and the president, again is very concerned. >> right.

presidency. listen to what trump says when asked about a report that kim jong nam, the murdered half berry of north korea's leader, was a cia informant. >> i saw the information about the cia with respect to his brother or half brother. and i would tell him that would not happen under my -- under my auspices. that's for sure. i wouldn't let that happen under my auspices. >> let's be clear, if the president of the united states means what he appears to be saying, that he -- that means he doesn't want the cia to us eye the best assets against a murderous dig particularity who threatened the united states, threatened the united states with this. >> a murderous dirk tart who massacres his own people, tested
4:30 pm
nuclear weapons that the united states assesses can each the west coast and as far as chicago. trump wouldn't use as a family member of the dictator as a cia asset because he is on kim's side. also trump defended north korea's kim jong un contradicting his own national security adviser. >> he has kept his word to me. that's very important. >> what they've said was that they're not going to test ballistic missiles, intercontinental raenl ballistic mitchells or have nuclear tests. that's continued. >> okay. kim has not kept hisward. why does the president say he has? outfront now our military analyst. mark hertling. and bruce clinger, former cia deputy division for north korea and fellow at the heritage foundation. bruce, just trying to understand. it appears -- it appears the president seems to be saying he wouldn't allow the cia to use kim's family as an intelligence asset because that's what the new report was we new the guy was killed.
4:31 pm
the new report was he was an asset of the cia. this is stunning isn't it. >> it's shocking and concerning when i was at cia we referred to north korea as the hardest of the hard tarkts. each of the intelligence sources had a lot of constraints against getting information. we should be trying to get information on this as you point out in dangerous threatening regime. not only to the united states but to our allies. we should be trying to get as much information as we can to understand their intentions as well as military capabilities, not putting any constraints on the intelligence committee >> general hertling can you wrap your mind around this. >> i can't. we gather intelligence great folks like bruce and others i know at cia have helped us, the military in both combat operations and i used to talk to cia operatives and analysts all over europe when i commanded there. they are critically important for for the only determining what an enemy or a foe's intentions are, but also capabilities. and if you don't have those two things you are out of luck in
4:32 pm
terms of dealing with foreign nations. and that's both enemies and friends. so the criticality of agents, folks on the ground collecting human intelligence, a key area of intelligence collection are critical important to what we do as a nation and our security as a people. >> bruise, i'm trying to understand why -- why he would do this, why he would say i would not use what the cia thinks the best asset they have against a murderous dig particularity who threatened the annihilate the united states and is killing people, why would he do this, take kim's side i wouldn't use the best guy against you that would never happen under me? >> well the preponderate prioritized what he says is a strong relationship with kim over a number of things, including fully enforcing u.s. law against knows who are not only violating u.n. resolutions but u.s. laws. a year aigt trump said there were 300 north korean entities, these would be entities violating u.s. law for which the u.s. government has information that he is not sanctioning
4:33 pm
because we are talking so fiesly. become in march trump reversed actions by the treasury department to enforce u.n. resolutions. and also the u.s. right now is not doing all of the military exercises with south korea. we have cancelled at least 11 exercises since last year. that's risking ally deterrence and defense capabilities. and also on diplomatic isolation the president embraced someone on the u.s. sanction list for human rights violations describing him as somebody mo loves his people and is honorable and courageous. in a way the president is undermining all three components of the maximum pressure strategy. >> general, i'm also confused on the same day trump says that kim has kept his word and that's what matters is he kept hisward. he goes into detail. hes is only testing short range missiles that of course is a violation of the deal, okay, as trump's own national security adviser said to the "wall street journal" conference very clear. no they have continued. they are violating it.
4:34 pm
why is the president doing that saying kim is going with his word when he is not. >> for some odd reason, erin, he believes that personal relations are the key to victory. anyone with an inkling of knowledge about international recommendations or affairs it's not personal releases that are important. it's the strategy and national security of the country you're dealing dealing with. he refused to believe that and it's fascinating to me. the think if i can add to what bruce said i think it's criticalry important. >> yes. >> krs the board, not only were we gob smacked at the comments in the briefing this afternoon, but i can gaern you that every intelligence officer, every intelligence agency around the world in other countries especially friendly ones were amazed at the president of the united states saying something like this. because they know it's not true. the purpose for existsens of the cia is to conduct these kind of operations and gain us intelligence. if they're not doing that, why
4:35 pm
have a cia? it's ludicrous? it just is amundsoning. >> you know, and the same, you know, conversation or interaction with reporters where he says he wouldn't use a good asset in korey if it offended kim, he talked about something else that might show a window here which is a letter. he got another letter from kim, a beautiful letter. here he is today and a few other times when he has gotten letters. >> a letter was given to me by kim jong un. and that letter was a very nice letter. with you like to see what was in that letter. >> and then we fell in love, okay. no, really he wrote me beautiful letters. and they're great letters. we fell in love. he wrote me two of the most beautiful letters. it's a beautiful piece of art. and i think we're going to make a deal. >> what do you make of that, bruce every time kim sends a letter trump seems to be in his
4:36 pm
thrall. >> we in the beautiful letters in the past and none let the record to progress let alone breakthroughs on denuclearization negotiations. perhaps it shows kim is ready to come back to negotiations in a meaningful way. but so far all of these beautiful letters have not gotten any coined of progress. kim jong un has been no more willing to bend in the nuclear arsenal tan his father and grand faert. >> thank you very much. nancy pelosi says she has had it with president trump. >> i'm done with limb. i don't even want to talk about it. >> is that enough as for tom steyer who poured millions into his own efforts to formally impeach trump. he is next. and pete buttigieg as promised >> you will not see me exchanging love letters on white house letterhead with a brulgts dictator who starves and murders his own people. a safe sleep aid and the 12-hour pain-relieving strength of aleve. that dares to last into the morning.

look, the reality is she doesn't even have enough support among house democrats. here is what she said. >> the majority of the caucus wants to go forward with the impeachment inquiry would you go forward. >> it's not even close in our caucus. >> but if. >> why speculate on hypotheticals. >> the 59 of the 205 mouse democrats support the impeachment inquiry. that number has not moved in a woke. isn't she write? i mean she does not have the numbers. >> i think there is incredible pressure on the house democrats from the speaker and from leadership not to come out for impeachment. but what we're talking about is a failure here, a system failure to include the american people, to let the american people know what's going on to hold hargs. it is the middle of june. it's almost halfway through the

year. and we've had really one hearing so far which is the michael cohen hearing. what we are seeing is an inability to get the information in front of the american people. we are seeing inability to do anything to hold this president to account. and we are seeing the most corrupt president in american history walk away with a precedent that what he is doing is okay. >> okay, to your point, though about the pressure, we know, tom, the house judiciary chairman jerry nadler who would be the one to begin the formal impeachment as chairman of the house jordinary. pushed pelosi behind closed doors. a private meeting, right but made the case here is why we need to do it. she would not budge. that was a week ago. and, again, behind closed doors. today nadler asked about it publicly, still wouldn't go there, even though we no he what he pushed in private. here he is today. >> and you still support moving forward with an impeachment inquiry. >> i have never said i did.
4:44 pm
i'm. >> do you. >> i simply say all options are on the table. that's all i'll say publicly. >> that's all i'm going to say publicly. he is toeing the luna publicly even though in private we know he said something different. what do you say to him. >> look, i think what this is -- what we are seeing is inability by the congress of the united states to assert its constitutional powers. and if in fact that's where we're going to end up that we're going to allow the most corrupt president in american history to walk away scot-free and go into an election claiming that he is innocent which is bt absolutely not true, what with he know is that when you tell the american people the facts -- because we have fwn around the country and done it, even trump supporters, even people who voted for him in 2016 don't know the facts and when they hear the facts they realize he is a liar and cheat. and they change their minds and they want him out. >> all right. tom steyer, thank you very much. >> okay, erin. >> and next pete buttigieg
