well, this actually somehow it doesn't effect the way people see him. do you believe that? >> i was struck by her saying that to you. there's something probably to that. whether it is a portion of people within his supporters who finds sort of the idea of being macho and tough and taking what you want to be appealing. he had a similar statement in response to an allegation in 2016. accused of assault on a airplane. he said she wouldn't be my first choice. and that there is another similar statement. that is a striking statement. rape and sexual assault are not about sex. it's about power. he makes no distinction between them. the president has been very concerned about allegations about people against winestein and clinton.

>> it's a terrible thing that people can make statements like that. in his original statement friday night he said people should pay dearly for false accusations. some see that as a threat. what do you make of the allegation and the response? >> e. jean carroll is not another random woman that donald trump can dismisds. i grew up reading her column. what i love about her is still to the day she would lift somebody up and kick them in the butt at the same time. people are wondering are we numb to this. is this different? yes. it is in 2020. we the people have so much more information about donald trump sexual impulses than in 2016. michael cohen is in jail right now in part because of the lies that he told to silence stormy daniels and keep her truth from the public. he's following the same play book trying to smear the women.

a citizen. the factors the jury and the court of public opinion look at and say somebody who says they are not fwal actually a victim. laughing through it. can i assign accountability. when i prosecuted a number of cases involving sexual assault and delayed reporting. one hurdle we face not only the jury but the person who was a victim. acknowledging what happened to them and saying the impact of it. we always had to guard against the idea of saying a victim is comes as they come. you cannot define and explain to them how they should be acting. if she's credible. >> what you said about this is this should be different. this is different. people know her. have read her column. just even the coverage of this, it hasn't gotten a huge amount of coverage or sustained coverage. >> even tonight there was news the new york post was instructed to take it out.

there's people that want to protect trump. these are very uncomfortable questions. i haven't seen democrats put out statements about this. it's an uncomfortable conversation. i trust that when you put it before people and in a clear way, should men who commit acts of sexual violence, assault, against women. should they be in positions of power. yes or no. we should not shirk away. there's people that want to duck and cover and hope this will go away. because it's harder to talk about. it's hard to watch a woman's pain. >> i don't know if this is would make -- you have more than a dozen people come forward. during a campaign. >> except during campaign is when people pay attention. to information. and this was not just at the end of the campaign. we reported on it at the times many months before the election. i think that the issue here in

what he suggesting is that he said i think he's off. he's different. he was saying that mentally and psychologically he's less of a man. less of a candidate than he was. from the same white house the same president that was furious with the questions raised about donald trumps own mental stability. in the president of course had the famous phrase, he's a very stable genius. to smack it down. this is par for course what we have seen. and very importantly it's suggests the race we'll have ahead. it will be a mean and frequently dirty race. >> does that work? all the evidence seems to point to the fact it does. >> negative politics works. it always has. we have seen in the campaigns cycles over four years, voters don't really hold it against candidates for going negative. they assume politicians are bad.

there's less of a cost for trump whose negatives are high already. he's not going to bring his own down that far is his gamble. he can't win reelection based on the math of his base. it can be through certain advantages. the math and tearing down the democrat. he assumes it will be biden. and thinks biden is someone who he knows how it run against. >> he talked about he doesn't need congressional aprooul for a military strike against iran. i want to play something he said. >> they have ideas that intelligence people come up with thoughts i actually learned a couple of things the other day. when we had the meeting with congress. >> i guess the members of congress relieved to learn the president thinks they come up with thoughts. the notion how do you think this whole iran thing has played out for the president? >> he's getting a fair amount of credit from the left.

i'm among the people who are thankful he didn't send in missiles. it would have made the situation worse. this hasn't played out yet. the iranians are about to break out of the nuclear agreement itself. it will get harder and tougher. it's not far away when they will start the break out. it's way too early to judge about how the presidential decision making it's sloppy. what the end result is i don't know yet. >> he said he doesn't like keeping congress abreast. he doesn't have to do it legally. >> i understand that is increase fwli the view of the white house. congress doesn't agree. it's been the view of white house on the matter of things. whether it's investigations or potential military action. this is going to be yet another thing that the democratic held house will try to have adjudicated by court.

more details came out this weekend about the conditions in which migrant kids are being held in this country. republican congressman mccall called them the worst i've ever seen. a lawyer who visited the facilities in texas told the new yorker, children kept filthy and hungry, denied showers, vice president pence blamed democrats in congress and on nbc president trump falsely blamed president obama and then took credit for ending family separation. let's check in with chris now. it's amazing that the president is taking credit for ending family separation when, obviously, that was part of their entire policy. >> he did it. he likes the harshness of it. they continue to do it. that's the truth. there's a lot of ugly truth here. i have never seen a crisis since maybe when you were in new orleans talking about katrina that was as openly understood and ignored as this one is. they all know all about it, anderson, and no one is doing a damn thing. we're waiting this week.
