presidential candidates, 10 of them take the stage tomorrow in the first of a two-night sweep. and the biggest draw, senator elizabeth warren. while many of her. ohhant are behind closed doorz ecoarse preparing for the battle warren is out and about. as you can see about to hold a townhall in miami where she woos voters with another plan. today unveiling a new election security plan. plans that just the concept of i've got a plan for that now defines warren. >> i've gone a plan for that. the good news is i got a plan foltz. they're ready for change, and i got a plan for that. >> and her plans and specifics are defining the playing field right now. senator bernie sanders, for example, announcing a more generous plan for student doet only after warren launched her own plane. ennen learning that joe biden is spending the time days before he appears on stage reviewing his own record from the past nearly 40 years.
4:02 pm
mj lee outfront live in miami. to begin the coverage, warren will be the biggest name on the stage, the first night highest ranking in the polls on that stage at the podium. how is she preparing? >> what is notable is the fact that it's the night before the debate and we are going to see elizabeth warren campaigning here tonight in miami. we are at florida international university where she is going to have a townhall with voters and with supporters. and you could argue that that is a kind of debate precip, right. because we expect she is taking questions from members of the audience. but advisers that i've been talking to tell me that they are very could go nizant of the fact that a counsel is different from the debate tomorrow. there is a timer. there are multiple moderators. and of course the fact that elizabeth warren is standing on stage with nine other candidates. now, part of the debate precip we have been told about is that elizabeth warren is trying to sort of boil down the many, many policy proposals that she has
4:03 pm
put forward so far. so that she can be focused and to make sure she can actually defend every one of the many ideas that she has put forward. also, even though she is going to be taking center stage -- we do expect a lot much focus on elizabeth warren, of course, erin, ha hard to overstate what a big night this is going to be and how high the stakes are for everybody on stage. for many this is an important opportunity to introduce themselves to voters and really try to have a breakout moment. and make an impression on a lot of the voters who might be turning into the candidacy for the first time, erin. >> mj thank you very much. and now the republican former senator and 2016 presidential candidate rick santorum. along with gloria borger and paul about a gala who serve as adviser to president clinton. glory is only one of the top five democrats is warren who is on the stage on the first night tomorrow. the other four biden sanders buttigieg and harris all will be
4:04 pm
on stage at the same time on thursday. so is it an advantage to be the only one in that group on the first night? or disadvantage for warren? >> i know lots of folks say it's a disadvantage for her because she is not up against bernie or biden on the first night. but i think it's an advantage for her. because first of all you're going to have a big tune in on the first night. she is going to be out there alone. center stage. she's got a lot of room to distinguish herself. she can present herself as the liberal who can -- who can beat donald trump. and so, yeah, i think she's got a lot of room in that group to say, look at me, i'm the one to take on trump. whereas if stherp sherp on the other stage shaed have competition. >> are rick when you were on stage for the first republican date. you were one of seven in 2012 you were one of no one and that seemed a lot. and now we have two nights of ten each and some aren't
4:05 pm
included. almost absurd. but the question is how hard is it to have a breakout moment in a situation where you are one of nine and no matter how squefl successful the debate is a lot of it you go, you go, you go here's the clock. >> look, i think the -- the opportunity for someone low in the polls is to come out swinging. and the person you swing at is the person can you which is elizabeth warren. in that respect i think it's probably a negative for her to be on the stanl as really the oem top dog to go after. the good thing is when you get swung at you get a chance to respond. i suspect you're seeing some people going after her. but she's having a lot more time than everybody else. because she has the opportunity to respond. bad thing going after her. good thing she is going to have extra time. >> she can say wait i get a chance to respond. i can almost hear it in the same tone of voice. don't i get to respond to that? i can hear it now.
4:06 pm
paul, you played george w. bush in al gore's debate prepare in 2000. what is the most important thing the candidates need to prepare for at the early stage where it's important. someone who has not broken out, this could be the ticket to do sohn a it's a crewed stage. >> it is. but the strategy is really really clear. there's only one question. it's the first question, the last question. that question in the mine of democrats is, can you beat trump? are you the one to beat trump? a and that has to be marbled into every answer you give. rick makes a great point. i think a lot of the people on the stanl with senator warren want to attack her. she has a great to response if she chooses. the response of bill clinton to bob dole in 1996. it's i could respond in kind that wouldn't solve a precip. wouldn't comfort an elderly person, expand health care. elizabeth warren is a little bit different. they need to say you have a record too and i could attack it but i'd rather attack problems.
4:07 pm
the biggest problem is donald trump and i can beat him. that's what they want to hear. >> what is the goal for the candidates. >>? when you are look for the breakout moment and people don't know who you are -- people need to be introduce today elizabeth warren but i'm not referring to her when i say that. some of the others on the stage do they say who they are? or is the best way to get attention to aim at her. >> congressman ryan was on the air and did he a get anyof describing it. he said it's like speed dating with the american public. >> to them running. >> that's a great description. sometimes when you attack, attack, attack you end up being the one looking bad. so it's a problem, particularly if senator warren has the answer that ball just gave which i think a great answer. you have to strike a fine balance. you have to tell people what you are for. and in many cases you have to tell them who you are. and where you came from. and what are you doing there? >> yes. >> so they have -- they have a double job. and warren just has to prove
4:08 pm
that she is somebody who can take on trump and beat him. >> right, she deserves to be where she is in the polls. >> yes. >> and of course higher. >> center stanl. >> i mean, rick, trump, though, look, he has always done things his own way. and just because he does them does not mean it's successful for anyone else. the fact that he has done them has change the game and the definition of success in these. it's a rock and a hard place. here is what he did in the debates. >> in guy is a choke artist and this guy is a lie. >> nasty guy now i know he doesn't have one endorsement. >> i never attack him on his look. and believe me there is plenty of subject matter there. >> he has failed in this campaign. it's been a total disaster. nobody cares. >> does that only work for one person? >> rick? >> well, first off donald trump that field has a lane they are running in. and they're going to -- did try to do what they think is
