>> reporter: it appears they agreed to talk more. they will work out details. he emphasizes that speed is not the object. just the meeting itself was historic. back to where we were before. another promise for meetings to follow. fact-checks for the president. he said prior to his term as president, it was a fiery mess. relations between north and south korea. relations were difficult, but the fire and fury were the
1:01 am
president's own commends in 2017. he also explained inexplicably that it's been 2 1/2 years of peace between the u.s. and north korea. that begets the fire and fury moment. but south korea sent home otto warmbier close to death. but he claims that things changed when he came to office. the two sides are speaking, that has changed. where do the discussions go and the president appearing to say that this outcome of this bilateral with kim jong-un, is at least an agreement to get the working level teams back to talking again. >> a historic moment was made. a unique and historic decision
1:02 am
was made by president trump to make this possible today. through today's meeting, the denuclearization, as well as the accomplishment of peace, that process on the korean peninsula. i believe we have just overcome a hill in that process. so, the 80 million people on the korean peninsula have been given hope thanks to today. as was mentioned by president trump right now, there will be a designated team of people, so, in the future we can take a big step forward. >> the initial plan had been for trump and i to co-visit the o.p. thanks to president trump's propoepr propos proposal, this historic meeting had taken place. i want to pay tribute to the
1:03 am
creative and old approach that president trump has demonstra demonstrated. we're in the process of achieving permanent peace. i will believe we have been able to go over a hurdle. this has given hope for the 80,000 korean people and the people of the whole world. the united states and north korea have worked to bring talks in the future. i'm looking forward to accomplishment through this process. >> i want to thank chairman kim. when we put out that notice, knowing the press, like i do, if he had decided not to come, you would have hit me. we're thanking him for doing it
1:04 am
on quick notice. i want to thank all the people that work so hard, our military in particular. setting something like this up is very hard. the meeting was a good one. very strong, very solid. we'll see what can happen. we're not looking for speed. we're looking to get it right. in the meantime, there's been no nuclear tests. no ballistic missiles. a lot of goodwill. that continues to be. i think after today, better than it was before. i want to thank all of the media. i'm going to our military base and speak to our troops. i've been doing this for three weeks straight.
1:05 am
and i look forward to being on air force one. we will be headed home. a lot of you are coming with us. >> at the line of the border itself, can you walk us through what happened? >> yes. we went and met at the line. i asked, would you want me to come across? he said, i would be so honored. this is the first time something like that, mr. admiral, first time something like that has happened. i asked, would you want me to come across the line? i didn't know what he would say. >> did you extend an invitation for him to come to the united states, sir? >> i did. at some point, that will all
1:06 am
happen. this was a pretty big move, based on what everybody is telling me. we had a pretty long chat. it was going to be five minutes and went for an hour or something. this was a positive day and event. it's good for the world. what happened today is great for south korea and north korea and great for the world. >> when we started this, we had missiles in japan. you remember the case of hawaii. you remember that whole situation? you remember guam. i mean, the world was a rough
1:07 am
place. and i became president. we went through rough dialogue and we came together well. he's going to be representing us in the talks. we'll be dealing with south korea. but the initial talks will be between the united states and north korea. and president moon will be right there. >> what was kim's response to your invitation? >> well, we were contacted immediately -- >> to the united states. >> i just asked him, at the right time, you will come over there. we have a ways to go there. i would extend the invite.
1:08 am
i mentioned out in front of the press. we want to take this down to the next step. see what happens. a very, very positive meeting. we had a positive meeting on trade, with president xi of china. see what happens. there's a great meeting. and again, no hurry. all these people, they hurry with these deals. no real speed. >> mr. president, why has chairman kim asked to set up a new team? >> we have a team. we have a team. we're going to spearhead it. and he is putting somebody in charge that we know and we like. >> were you able to validate people were still alive that were previous negotiators. >> i know the main person is. we know that. i would hope the rest are, too.
1:09 am
they said the person we spoke with wasn't. and i know he is. >> did the president say sm anything about the missile tests? >> we don't consider that a missile test. we're talking about ballistic missiles. not only not testing. and there were no nuclear tests. at the end of the obama administration, an early part of my administration, a mountain moved. they thought it was a big earthqua earthquake. they thought it was a 9.7ette quake. and it was a nuclear test. we're on a terrific pass. let's say hello to our great troops. are you guys going over there? thank you all very much.
1:10 am
>> looking fords to taking them off. at some point during the xwoe negotiations, things can happen. thank you very much. >> the president lauding his bilateral reading with kim jong- jong-un. he said that speed is not the haise tois historic meetings. and he believes that now, at least the groundwork is set, overtime, for agreements in
1:11 am
substance. he did emphasize no rush, in his view, to get there. we should note, is the president dismissing north korea's short-range missile tests, which it has restarted saying he was talking about long-range missile tests. the tests threaten thousands of people here. we were at the dmz, close to the border. joseph, you and i were talking about the talks in the singapore, and then here. the outcome and agreement to open up the talks again. the significance of that in your view?
1:12 am
>> jim, if you remember, in singapore, there was a signed document of a group that was headed by secretary of state pompeo. it's a bit of do it all again. we -- talking is better than not talking. i would hope they would add in flexibility. the u.s. representative for the talks had been trying to talk with north koreans for a while.
1:13 am
after hanoi, there were reports that kim jong-un was punished by his team and sent to a concentration camp. et cetera. we don't know who is going to be secretary of state. let's hope these talks get moving and make some progress. when they meet for the real summit, that we have a document that makes progress on denuclearization as well as other issues. >> you mentioned the word denuclearization. that's not a word i heard the president mention once,ed a any of the meetings. he did criticize press conference of this and other negotiations, repeatedly. he did not mention denuclearization, which at the start of the talks was what we heard repeatedly from trump administration officials.
1:14 am
particularly that phrase, complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization. why is the president not using that word? is he focusing on more achievable gains and concessions? >> well, i think he's beginning to understand that denuclearization is going to be a long, long-term struggle. not possible suddenly in his first term, or if he wins, even with his second term. this is why he keeps on saying we have all the time. there's no hurry. and he is shifting. shifting his goal, lowering the bar. let's face it. even north koreans said they would denuclearize. their idea of denuclearization is moving towardses the
1:15 am
denuclearization of the korean peninsula. we're not getting there very, very quickly at all. >> it's interesting, that tend result, that the trump administration has accepted, north korea as a nuclear state. it is drawn out under conditions that north korea has not taken steps to curtail its program. is that a result of the trump administration's north korea policy? we'll be watching. ambassador, good to have you. we'll be back on our coverage of president trump's visit to the demilitarized zone and his meeting with the north korean leader. we'll be back after this break. can't see what it is yet.re? what is that? that's a blazer? that's a chevy blazer? aww, this is dope. this thing is beautiful.
1:16 am
i love the lights. oh man, it's got a mean face on it. it looks like a piece of candy. look at the interior. this is nice. this is my sexy mom car. i would feel like a cool dad. it's just really chic. i love this thing. it's gorgeous. i would pull up in this in a heartbeat. i want one of these. that is sharp. the all-new chevy blazer. speaks for itself. i don't know who they got to design this but give them a cookie and a star. since my dvt blood clot i was thinking... could there be another around the corner? or could it turn out differently? i wanted to help protect myself. my doctor recommended eliquis. eliquis is proven to treat and help prevent another dvt or pe blood clot... almost 98 percent of patients on eliquis didn't experience another. ...and eliquis has significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. eliquis is fda approved and has both. don't stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. if you had a spinal injection while on eliquis
1:17 am
call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily... and it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. what's around the corner could be surprising. ask your doctor about eliquis.
1:18 am
1:19 am
welcome back. i'm jim sciutto at the demilitarized zone, at the border between north and south korea. moments ago, donald trump and the north korean leader dick
1:20 am
lat dictator, kim jong-un, the president emerging from that discussion, escorting the north korean leader, back across the border. called the meetings positive. they have agreed to restart working level negotiations. they said, time is not of the essence. he will take his time with these negotiations. jim acosta, previous summits that i have. i found it notable that one word the president did not say in any of his comments to the press over the last couple of hours is the word denuclearization. when we started the negotiations between the u.s. and north korea, the administration spoke principally about complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization. that was the goal and the requirement. the president didn't mention
1:21 am
that. we're back to taung talks for te of talks. has the president defip edefine goal of negotiations now? >> there was no breakthrough. just the promanse thbromance be president trump and kim jong-un. you heard the president say, and you just mentioned this a few moments ago, they're going to announce in the coming weeks, the members who were going to make up, essentially, both sides, who will continue these talks. i think what we saw today was the president trying to reconstruct what broke down in han hanoi, when the talks fell apart, at the last summit with kim jong-un. i think moving forward, we're going to see them put the pieces back together again, to get the talks up and running one more time. but it doesn't sound like they made any progress on any of the sticking points in terms of denuclearizine ining north kore.
1:22 am
you were making a point of this all day long, jim. the president was going after the news media, for its coverage of how things have been going between the president, kim jong-un. what he wants is the presence of these talks. the fact he is meeting with kim jong-un, to count as substance and progress. as we know, watching this president for some time and watching the president with kim jong-un on three different occasions, he governs by spectacle. he hopes that will result in leverage of who he is negotiating with at the other end. in this instance, it's kim jong-un. the question is if he wants to
1:23 am
do something of substance. or if he will enjoy having the united states put him on the same level as the president. i think that's the ultimate question for this president moving forward. jim, one of the interesting things that came out of all of this, is he did invite kim jong-un to come to the white house. i can't imagine seeing kim jong-un in the east room of the white house. that would be a spectacle than what we saw earlier today. it boils down whether it will get kim jong-un across that dividing line. kim jong-un is a menace to the world. one final think that the president extended one opportunity for. i talked to a source on the ground, on the scene, the source said it's way too early to be talking about that.
1:24 am
no timetable when that might ultimately take place, jim. >> this is a president who is committed to the meeting, if not the concession. if the president wants that meeting, he generated one with a tweet 24 hours ago. we should leave open the possibility he can force a white house visit through, as well. you mentioned a short time ago, there was a difficult encounter between the white house press secretary. really a scuffle. can you describe the circumstances and what exactly happened here? >> you can see it, in that video, where she shoves aside one of the north korean officials to get members into the press on this meeting.
1:25 am
it sounds as though they were scuffling to get the press in there. some of the pool cameras were out of position and not able to get the footage here. >> we lost jim acosta. these are the pictures we are showing. this is a scuffle between members of the u.s. press pool, covering the u.s. president as they do. north korean aids and the security detail. the press secretary, tried to confront them to get the white house press pool in there, run over, as it were, by north korean aides, bruised a bit, as well. the north korean leader is a dictator. it imprisons its own people.
1:26 am
it is not comfortably with the free press, as travels with the u.s. president, that's kim jong-un. that was a reminder of the leader he is. we are hearing before we go to break, sounds of a helicopter. not clear yet. this may be the president leaving the dmz. when we come back, we'll give you details. the first survivor of alzheimer's disease is out there. and the alzheimer's association is going to make it happen. but we won't get there without you. visit alz.org to join the fight.

1:28 am
1:29 am
hey! i live on my own now! i've got xfinity, because i like to live life in the fast lane. unlike my parents. you rambling about xfinity again? you're so cute when you get excited... anyways... i've got their app right here, i can troubleshoot. i can schedule a time for them to call me back, it's great! you have our number programmed in? ya i don't even know your phone anymore... excuse me?! what? i don't know your phone number. aw well. he doesn't know our phone number! you have our fax number, obviously... today's xfinity service. simple. easy. awesome. i'll pass. welcome back. we are live at the dmz. the border between north and south korea. and moments ago, we saw the president, his helicopter, marine one, and its escort, flying back south. they have left the dmz.
1:30 am
that included the briefest of visits into north korea, by president trump. crossing the border at the invitation a couple of moments before coming back. he and kim had a 50-minute bilateral meeting. the president speaking alongside the south korean president, moon jae-in, saying the end result of the long discussion, was an agreement to restart associations between north korea and the u.s. listen to president trump a short time ago. >> thank you very much. we have a very good meeting. the team will try and work out some details again, speed is not the object. we want to see if we can do a comprehensive, good deal. nobody knows how things turn out. but this was a great day. this was a legendary and historic day. quick notice, nobody saw this coming.
1:31 am
it was great he was able to react so quickly. able to react so quickly. and speaking with president moon, he would say, the meeting is just historic. it will be more historic if something comes up. a lot has come up. you see what's going on. you see what's happening. the level of relationship when i came into office. when i came into office, it was a fiery mess. bad things were going on. the end of the other administration, the last administration, was nothing but trouble. you don't report it accurately. but that's okay. some day history will record it accurately. for 12 1/2 years, we had peace,
1:32 am
with nothing signed. it was based on relationship. president moon was saying strongly, he would have never believed that a thing can go on like this, so friendly, so peacefully, for so long. we agreed to have times set up. the united states will have a team. secretary of state pompeo will pick it. we know the gentleman. good luck, steve. you know steve. he likes both countries very much. steve will head it up, under the auspices of a great secretary of state, mike pompeo. over the next two or three weeks, the teams will start working to see whether or not they can do something. very big stuff. complicated and not as complicated as people think. a lot of our great triumphs have
1:33 am
been in a great relationship. you saw when they were showing us around, they were showing president moon and myself around. they were talking about 2 1/2, 3 years ago, it was dangerous out there. you couldn't move. people were being killed. since singapore, it's been a whole different ball game. i was telling chairman kim, that actually, to me, hanoi was a great success. you need that and you sometimes need things like that to happen. it was a great success. we maintained our relationship. so, we're going to have teams that will meet in the next few weeks. they will start a process. we'll see what happens. >> the president seems to define success now, as meetings. the meetings are happening. the meeting today. they agreed to meet again. denuclearization, not a word he
1:34 am
mentioned with the press at the dmz. we're hearing the helicopters leaving the dmz. the president's helicopter carrying the press and the helicopter carrying moon jae-in, have left the demilemilitarized zone. my colleague, anna cora, is in seoul. and it appears that the talks are back on track. >> i would say that is probably the most encouraging sign of what has come out today. trump and kim meeting is historic. the fact there's teams from the united states and north korea, meeting over the coming weeks, is something substantial.
1:35 am
something concrete. something tangible that gives a sense that momentum is under way. talks will resume for the denuclearization of the korean peninsula. joining me to discuss this and so much more, is an adjunct senior fellow for new american security. it is a u.s. thinktank. the fact there's going to be two sides talking, not just kim and jump. that's encouraging in your mind? >> yes. that's the most meaningful part of today's drama, really. the two sides have not been talking. you have to put in the legwork before the third summit. the key is, what will they talk about? what's important, i hope that trump suggested to kim, to give his lead negotiator the room to negotiate. what we saw before, the hanoi summit, was that the north korea
1:36 am
negotiator was not able to comment at all on the nuclear issue. he said, that is for chairman kim to discuss. he agreed on everything, except for the nuclear issue. kim jong-un has to get the negotiator guidance or we're look to square one. >> trump said he's handing it over to the u.s. special envoy to north korea. this is a man who has been in the region trying to talk to the north koreans. do they respect him? >> steve is sharp. we've seen so far, that north korea wants to always bypass him and go straight to president trump. it's a good sign that president trump named him publicly just now. i hope his name will empower him to a certain extent. that's crucial for any negotiator walking in.
1:37 am
he pompeo. >> that remains to be seen. i would suggest that the two sides try to come to the end state. in the meantime, it's important that they try to strike small deals, many deals, to get the process going. >> tell us where they need to get going? >> the north is not willing to accept anything but the complete lifting of key u.n. sanctions. this is where the north, in america's point of view, will
1:38 am
have to be flexible, accepting something less. or lifting sanctions are hard if not difficult to get back. >> we should notice that the truck that just passed, it's a nationalistic anthem. this is something that happens in seoul on weekends. the united states said from the get-go that they're not going to lift any sanctions unless they go to denuclearization. that wasn't enough. >> north korea's price was too high. i can see a scenario, a
1:39 am
plausible scenario, in which washington might be willing to give some exceptions and waivers on humanitarian issues, on sanctions that are in place for humanitarian sectors. the econo the key economic sanctions, i can expect washington wanting to lift them after substantial denuclearization has been made first. north korea has blurred the lines where the economic development is in place. the images that we're seeing, that should be quite incredible, historic, as we noted. symbolic. what does it mean to people here, in south and north korea. tell us the symbolism, attached to that. >> the symbol is very important. they show images of what could be possible in the future.
1:40 am
normalization of peace. this is their way to try to build relationships. >> aspirational images. >> aspirational. to foreshadow what could be possible. what is possible, is a different story. >> always great to get your analysis inside. we really do thank you. that is really the end. it concludes the end of a historic day on the dmz. we know that president trump is planning to fly to seoul and will meet troops before he flies out on air force one. everything has been pushed back because of that meeting on the dmz. the air force base is expecting donald trump to arrive soon.
1:41 am

we continue, following the breaking news here this day. history in the making. the u.s. president donald trump, stepping across the border into north korea, at the invitation of the north korean leader, kim jong-un. the moment the world was watching. mr. trump wrapped up a private
1:45 am
set of demilitarized zone. the two agreed to start talking after the nuclear negotiations had stalled. the moment that the world watched. mr. trump making history there, crossing the border into north korea, becoming the first u.s. president to do so. mr. trump taking time to speak with troops there at the dmz. those troops that keep watch and security for south korea. the south korean president looking at this for a positive step toward talks continuing. mr. trump indicating that he is open to seeing kim jong-un, an invitation to the white house. the timing of that, stillen certain. but again, you're looking at history in the making. if you're waking up here on the u.s. east coast, let's take a look at live pictures right now, if we have them that are playing out there. we're watching all of the events that are happening. the president set to arrive
1:46 am
shortly. meeting with troops. let's get more on this with joseph young. joseph, of course, we're watching this happen. many people say it's interesting to see the optics and it's historic. what are the concrete steps that will take place to make sure that denuclearization happens? >> yes. i think you're quite right to ask that question. hit was historic, the addition of president moon and the dmz, symb symbolic. it would only be a handshake quick meeting. but they ended up talking for 45 minute s or so. during that time, they talked about how to start again in the
1:47 am
engagement process. that's a good sign. we must remember, being there before, they had agreed to talks. they had signed a document that stated that secondary of state pompeo would lead the u.s. side. for this to be meaningful, there has to be something to work for it. they have something to work with. there was a package in hanoi. soet sides have to show flexibility. on the american side, well, they have to show some flexibility on sanctions. in hanoi, they wanted
1:48 am
comprehensive relief on sanctions. maybe they are given smaller sanctions. that can be the beginning of what i would call an interim agreement. and you could include things like opening diplomatic office, which would be the first step towards normalization. perhaps an even on end of war decoration. it ended with a cease-fire arrangement. so, technically they are still at war. all those things, i believe the working group can make some progress. if they do, this historic meeting will mean something. >> the working groups, certainly now in play. the leaders of these two
1:49 am
countries to come back for this meeting. the live images we're watching right now at the dmz. awaiting the u.s. president that is set to meet with the troops again, after this historic moment, that's taking place at the air base. the historic moment, president trump meeting with kim jong-un. we'll be right back after this break. can't see what it is yet.re? what is that? that's a blazer? that's a chevy blazer? aww, this is dope. this thing is beautiful. i love the lights. oh man, it's got a mean face on it. it looks like a piece of candy. look at the interior. this is nice. this is my sexy mom car. i would feel like a cool dad. it's just really chic. i love this thing. it's gorgeous. i would pull up in this in a heartbeat. i want one of these. that is sharp. the all-new chevy blazer. speaks for itself. i don't know who they got to design this but give them a cookie and a star.

the u.s. president walked to north korea and met with the north korean leader at the dmz. donald trump and kim jong-un met at the dmz. they held talks for 15 minutes in the bilateral meeting, coming out saying, both sides will continue talks in the coming weeks. we are looking very shortly. where the troops are waiting for
1:54 am
president trump to greet him. he will be speaking to those troops before taking board of air force one and flying back to washington. to discuss today's events, paula hancocks joins us from the dmz. paula, are you encouraged by the fact that both sides will put people in charge to move forward in discussions. is this progress? it is a day of firsts. it was the first time that the u.s. president had met the north korean leader at the dmz. the first time, stepping on that demarcation line on the north korean side of the dmz.
1:55 am
we know maybe a handshake, maybe two minutes, maybe a quick hello. that ended up 15 minutes they were speaking to each other. bilateral meetings between the u.s. and north korea. this was more than a handshake. not as far as a summit. one of the most telling sound bytes we heard, is from north korean leader kim jong-un himself. we could hear him saying, the fact that we will be able to meet each other anytime now, this is the signal this meeting will send. as far as the north korean leader is concerned, that's the headline the fact they can meet each other at any time. they will be negotiating team setup on both sides.
1:56 am
that had been in place after singapore. clearly, extra impetus. and it appears on making sure the talks restart. we heard from president donald trump, giving an invitation to kim jong-un to visit the white house, even though there hasn't been any progress on the talks. the u.s. president the due to address troops. stay with cnn. "new day" will continue our coverage of this historic day. moving is hard.
