on march 11th. will the nba but the one to bring us back. that'll be fitting. if they do it, they'll do it right, have everything in bubbles and everyone under one hotel and at the facility. >> we'll find out soon. kristine, thank you for joining us. brian brianna keilar picks up our coverage right now. thanks john, i am brianna keilar, i want to welcome viewers here around the world. this is a special live coverage of the coronavirus pandemic. thank you for joining me on this memorial day, which is unlike any that we have seen before. the nation honors 1.2 million americans who died for their country. president trump paid tribute today at a wreath laying ceremony at the tombs of unknown soldiers to remember the fallen.
10:01 am
americans will also remember those who lost their lives in the fight against coronavirus. this week the united states will reach 100,000 deaths in this pandemic. at this hour the coronavirus is blamed for 97,000 deaths in the u.s. the number of cases now topping 1.6 million. still not enough to prevent scenes like these, beaches and bou boardwalks over the weekend with no masks in sight. a party at missouri, at osage beach. the holiday weekend is not over yet. crowds are continuing to pack and reopening beaches on both coasts for the third straight day. cnn is in myrtle beach in south carolina and i wonder what you are seeing natasha, have you seen people practicing social
10:02 am
distancing and seeing them wearing masks? >> reporter: yes to the first question because you can see each party is pretty much spaced out from each other and it is easier to do when there are more beach here and less crowded than yesterday and the city told me that they seen average to even lighter than normal memorial day crowds for myrtle beach. the question about masks, take a look. there is not a single person on this beach wearing one. i personally take mine off to be on camera and i will put it back on after and especially when i am interviewing people. we met someone, one other person who also was wearing a mask so we stopped him and asked him about that. >> i just feel it is safe to take proper precautions. it is larger group and get into the crowd again and i feel like with my family being out here, i
10:03 am
want to protect them. just being on the safe side of things, you know? >> reporter: the city says that maybe easier to social distance on the beach but they are concerned of in door spaces and restaurants and local businesses so desperately need this tourism cash flow. we saw local business is advertising with planesov overhd here on the beach. there were some restaurants exceeded 50% capacity and that's where we see some people being close together and not wearing masks. >> good message there from isaiah about wearing masks and protecting his family. how is the country doing right now? we turn to cnn's tom foreman, as always break it down for us. >> brianna, let's go to the map. the story telling is not really
10:04 am
that good. yes, we have 22 states that are in that sort of tan steady states. we have 18 states that are in the red to dark red area. remember this is relative. this is showing how they are compares to the week before. if you are red or dark red, you are getting more cases than a couple of weeks ago. if you are green, only ten are in the green. it is relative. new york up there is green right now. but new york we know has massive number of cases, well over 300,000 cases. that's one of the big leading up there but they're moving in the right direction compares to last week. texas, a lot of cases but they're moving in the right direction. arkansas, look at that, dark red. that's porntimportant. the governor there says they're currently experiencing their second peak abo second peak. about 30 days ago, they had a case of 163 new cases undone da.
10:05 am
they're going up and down state by state. clear pattern is hard to come by in terms of a positive direction. that may have something to do with the number of tests administered because if you get one hot spot, a meatpacking plant and nursing homes where they have a lot of cases, that can push these numbers up and skew the picture. you got to have more tests so you know. the one place is hawaii. this is the seven days average of new cases there in hawaii. they look like they have been moving solidly down here from way up there before the start of april there.
10:06 am
they have been creeping down. remember hawaii is now higher geographically. they can do whatever they want. they're not like the rest of the stays where people are drifting across the border all the time the way we do here. brianna, overall the map on this memorial day is not absolutely dreadful but it is not moving in the solid direction where we have 30 or 40 states in the green zone and that number keeps growing. brianna. >> tom, thanks for walking us through that. as i mentioned earlier, there is a video that gone viral shows an extreme case of people ignoring the advice of medical experts. >> this is a giant pool party in missouri at ozarks. you can see people shoulder to
10:07 am
shoulder and not a mask in in sight. tell us what it was like at your resort and what you have seen in scenes at the laukes of the ozarks this weekend. was that the norm? >> we were packed more than i have been here. most people of our resort were practicing social distancing. we seen more grubhub deliveries th we had in the past. our pool did not look like that at all. it was more family here. we did not see none of that. what you see in that video is the norms for those types of places even without of what's going on. >> so it sounds like there were a lot of people who been inside
10:08 am
and they really wanted to get out and you are seeing a lot of people who just need that outlet and they need that vacation but at the same time i thought it was interesting there is been a lot of food deliveries because restaurants are open there, right? >> yes. restaurants are opened, they're 50% to 60% is what the governor put out. a lot of people are using curbside and grubhub and uber eats and delivery for pizza huts and domino's. i have seen more of those. from our traction of pick up today was apparent. we have kitchens in every one of them so we have seen just from that everybody is cooking more with us. >> what precautions have you
10:09 am
taken and how important to make people don't get sick so you have a sustainable business model. >> we do all of our staffs and we take their temperatures clocking in tomorrow. there is more than one girl or one of our housekeepers working in a room together. we provide a mask for them to wear. they're required to wear a mask. if they are in there together they have to wear masks. we have hand sanitizers. new guidelines are put out by our governor of the state and on our front door. that's the precautions we took and anything out there by the cdc, we have it out there also. >> bill morgan, thank you so much. >> you have to keep them safe. there are so many people in your situation, we appreciate you coming on and telling us about what you are doing. thank you.

of their action to prevent the control of coronavirus. breaking news, the world health organization temporary halted or ooereven studying hydroxychloroquine. this is the drug that the president touted. this family treated with hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine became seriously ill and significantly more likely to die than patients who did not take the drug. i am joined now by dr. roshini raj. she's contributing medical editor for health magazine. i want to get your take on what we are seeing here from the w.h.o. about even studying of
10:18 am
hydroxychloroquine. >> brianna, they are halted and the drug is doing significant harm. they don't want to put the study subject through this because they think the harm outweighs the benefits. this is more evidence of not something we want to be looking for in terms of a cure for coronavirus. the people that are taking it without real recommendations got their hands-on it that it is dangerous potentially and especially in terms of a heart arrhythmia complication. >> what is horrifying of this virus is it takes a while to know the consequences, right? it takes only one person to spread this. >> that's right. it is extremely infectious and the incubation period can last up to 14 days.
10:19 am
what we are seeing now of mem y memorial day weekend and things are opening. we'll see the effects of that in the next several weeks. it is worrisome and people don't realize they can spread it without symptoms. so when you see those things about schools and graduation parties and swimming pools that does not look like it is contracted through water but if you in a swimming pool and you are close to people and you are by the pool, things can spread. as long as we don't have the kak tra the contact tracing, it is going to be harder to trace. >> we see people are having fun, they're drinking and laughing and shouting and spraying virus all over each other. we'll wait to see the effects of that here in a little while. last week arkansas had its

10:28 am
scarborough had something to do with it. 20 years later even though it has been debunked countless tries. people are trying to use it against scarborough. i reached out to lori's father and ex-husband, they all declined interview requests. i am under the impression because they don't want to see their or loved one to be remembered how she died. they don't want to give more fuel to these conspiracy theorist. what an awful place to be when you are a family member of a loved one, you feel like you should not speak out because it causes more conspiracy. >> they can't afford it when you have the president who's furthering this conspiracy theory. it is moments like this what had a lot of critics saying what is twitter going to do. what are they doing? >> twitter is the platform that
10:29 am
the president promote this idea on. he has done it four or five times this month in various ways referring to a cold case that's not actually cold. we asked twitter, does this violate your policies even for world leaders where dangerous contents would be flagged so users can understand what the truth is actually is. notably about 24 hours now, twitter have not responded to our request zr commeand comment this issue. there were a lot of trump tweets that were ugly, don't bother asking twitter about because they don't seem to cross a clear policy line. this one does cross a policy line. what we have seen so often whether it is how the republican leaders reacted and how fox news reacted. there seems to be penalty within his base for promoting this kind of nonsense and with twitter,

10:31 am
council member, larkin. you were deciding the swing vote that bro that brought the rnc convention to charlotte. what do you think of the president's argument here and what are your concerns of filling that arena to capacity? >> i don't think it is realistic. it does not mean there some sort of in-person convention here in charlotte. you have to reevaluate and understand it is not going to be the way that you imagine it is going to be. democrats have been forward that the convention in milwaukee will be the week before the rnc will have to look different than the convention we held four years ago. so i think it is unrealistic
10:32 am
that the president or anybody or county health directors to be able to guarantee anything about what three months from now looks like. >> what would it mean council member economically if the rnc decides to pull out? >> it will be a huge economic impact. i know a lot of our small businesses here in town are shot in the arm to help recover of the economy hardship felt in the last two months. our top priority has to continue of the health and well-being of our citizens and the economic impact from that, part of that equation or public health safety has to receive that. that's our priority and we'll continue to. >> earlier this month the president accused the governor quote "playing politics with the phase approach reopening the state." governor cooper says he'll let
10:33 am
data and science guide him and not politics. this is what he told cnn last week about the convention. >> i think in order to truly boost our economy, people going to have to feel confident and they're safe. they'll do that when the government shows that we are relying on these figures and not political and this is not emotional. this is based on health experts, data and science and that's it for everybody to see. so, no one is being favored or disfavored over the other. >> he said it is not political, i wonder if he thinks there is any way the reopening can not be politicized at this point considering the environment we are in. >> no, this pandemic is politicized, it is disappointing. in our state, we are seeing a lot of bipartisan cooperations

of doing what's best for the city of north carolina. if we had to go back into some sort of abbott line state's order and reverse some of the reopening that we are building. we are reckless of this reopening and we'll have to go backward and that can be more dire for small businesses than the loss of the convention. >> vice president mike pence says the convention can be moved, he mentioned texas and florida and all three states with republican governors who are moving more quickly on reopening. what do you think of pence's commen comments? >> i think it is all a test. for new venues and city to be
