and the american people are looking for some version of strength. and they're going to see two different kinds here tonight. one man, president trump who leads from his gut, and another man, joe biden who says to the american public, i'm leading with the help of experts and my own experience in government. those are two very stark choices. and i think it's going to be really on display, to the extent these two men have strengths and weaknesses, watching them and covering them over the years. this is going to be a well matched fight and a slugfest. >> one guy conveys empathy, the other guy conveys toughness, nastiness. i remember in 2012 when obama had his first debate, he had been in a bubble, only talking to people who liked him and supported him. he was rusty and out of shape, talk about a bubble. people talk about the liberal bubble. the maga bubble that donald

good evening from the health education campus of case western reserve university and the cleveland clinic. i'm chris wallace of fox news, and i welcome you to the first of the 2020 presidential debates. between president donald j. trump and former vice president joe biden. this debate is sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. the commission has designed the format, six roughly 15 minute segments with two minute answers from each candidate to the first question, then open discussion for the rest of each segment. both campaigns have agreed to these rules. for the record, i decided the topics and the questions in each topic. i can assure you none of the questions has been shared with the commission or the two candidates.

this debate is being conducted under health and safety protocols designed by the cleveland clinic, which is serving as the health security adviser to the commission for all four debates. as a precaution, both campaigns have agreed the candidates will not shake hands at the beginning of tonight's debate. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain silent. no cheers, no boos or other interruptions so we and more importantly you can focus on what the candidates have to say. no noise except right now as we welcome the republican nominee, president trump and the democratic nominee, vice president biden. [ applause ] >> how are you doing? >> good.

how are you? >> i'm well. >> gentlemen, a lot of people have been waiting for this night. let's get going. our first subject is the supreme court. president trump, you nominated amy coney barrett over the weekend to succeed ruth bader ginsburg on the court. you say the constitution is clear about your obligation and the senate's to consider a nominee to the court. vice president biden, you say that this is an effort by the president and republicans to jam through an appointment in what you call an abuse of power. my first question to both of you tonight. why are you right in the argument you make, and your opponent wrong. and where do you think a justice barrett would take the court. president trump in this first segment, you go first, two minutes. >> i will tell you very simply, we won the election. elections have consequences. we have the senate, we have the

white house and we have a phenomenal nominee, respected by all, top top academic. good in every way. good in every way. in fact, some of her biggest endorsers are very liberal people, from notre dame and other places. i think she's going to be fantastic. we have plenty of time, even if we did it after the election it 168, i have a lot of time after the election, as you know. i think she will be outstanding, she's going to be as good as anybody that has served on that court. we really feel that. we have a professor at notre dame, highly respected by all, said she's the single greatest student he's ever had. he's been a professor for a long time at a great school. and we just -- we won the election, and, therefore, we have the right to choose her and very few people knowingly would say otherwise. and by the way, the democrats, they wouldn't even think about not doing it. the only difference is, they'd try to do it faster.

there's no way they would give it up. they had merit garland but the problem is, they didn't have the election, and they were stopped. and probably that would happen in reverse also. definitely would happen in reverse. >> president trump, thank you. same question to you, vice president biden, have you two minutes. >> first of all, thank you for doing this. and i'm looking forward to this, mr. president. >> thank you, joe. >> the american people have a right to have a say in who the supreme court nominee is, and that say occurs when they vote for a united states senator and when they vote for the president of the united states. they're not going to get that chance now, because we're in the middle of an election already. election has already started. tens of thousands of people have already voted. the thing that should happen is, we should wait. we should wait and see what the outcome of this election is. that's the only way the american people get to express their view

is by who they elect as president and who they elect as vice president. now, what's at stake here is the president has made it clear he wants to get rid of the affordable care act. he's been running on that, he ran on that, and he's been governing on that. he's in the supreme court right now trying to get rid of the affordable care act which will strip 20 million people from having insurance, health insurance now if they -- if it goes to the court. and the justice -- and i have nothing -- i'm not opposed to the justice, she seems like a very fine person, but she's written before she went on the bench, which is her right, that she thinks the affordable care act is not constitutional. the other thing that's on the court -- and if it's struck down, what happens? women's rights are fundamentally changed. once again, a woman could be held to pay more money because she has a pre-existing condition of pregnancy. they're able to charge a woman more for the same exact procedure a man gets.

and that ended when we in fact passed the afford an care act. and there's 100 million people that have pre-existing conditions and they'll be taken away as well, the pre-existing conditions, insurance companies are going to love this, it's just not appropriate to do this before this election. if he wins the election and the senate is democrat -- oar republican, then he goes forward. if not, we should wait until february. >> there aren't 100 million people with pre-existing conditions. as far as the say is concerned, the people already had their say, they -- justice ginsburg said very powerfully, at some point ten years ago or so, she said, a president and the senate is elected for a period of time, but a president's elected for four years. we're not elected for three years, i'm not elected for three years. we have the senate, we have a president -- >> you're elected to -- >> during that period of time, we have an opening. i'm not elected for three years,

i'm elected for four years. >> and the majority -- >> the hundred million people is totally wrong. i don't know where you got that number. the bigger problem that you have is you're going to extinguish 180 million people with their private health care. >> that's simply not true. >> well, you're going to socialist -- >> that's -- >> we're now into open discussion -- open discussion yes, i agree. >> number one, he knows that what i proposed, what i proposed is that we expand obamacare, and we increase it, we do not wipe any -- one of the big debates we had with 23 of my colleagues trying to win the nomination that i worn, were saying that bide ing wanted to allow people to have private insurance still. they can, they do. they will under my proposal. >> that's what you said, and that's not what your party has said. >> that's not -- >> your party wants to go socialist medicine. >> the party is me, right now, i am the democratic party.

>> let -- vote now. >> are you going to pack the court? >> make sure you let people know. i'm not going to answer the question. >> why won't you answer that question. >> the question is -- >> you want radical left -- >> am you shut up, man. >> who is on your list. who is on your list. >> gentlemen, i think we have -- >> you're not going to give a list. >> we have ended the segment. >> that was a productive segment, wasn't it. keep yapping, man. >> the people understand, joe. 47 years you've done nothing. >> all right. >> the second subject is covid-19, which is a serious subject, so let's try to be serious about it. we've had more than 7 million cases of coronavirus in the united states, more than 200,000 people have died. even after we produce a vaccine, experts say it could be months or years before we come back to anything approaching normal.

my question for both of you is, based on what you have said and done so far, and what you have said you would do starting in 2021, why should the american people trust you more than your opponent to deal with this public health crisis going forehead in this case, the question goes to you first, sir, two minutes uninterrupted. >> good luck. 200,000 dead. as you said, over 7 million infected in the united states. we in fact have 5% -- 4% of the world's population, 20% of the deaths. 40,000 people a day are contracting covid. in addition to that, about -- between 750 and 1,000 people a day are dying, when he was presented with that number, he said, it is what it is. it is what it is, because you are who you are. that's why it is. the president has no plan. he has not laid out anything.

he knew all the way back in february how serious this crisis was, he knew it was a deadly disease. what did he do? he's on tape acknowledging he knew it, he said he didn't tell us or give people a warning of it, because he didn't want to pan iks the american people. you don't panic, he panicked. in addition to that. what did he do? he weng the in and he -- we were insisting the people we had on the ground in china should be able to go to wuhan and determine for themselves how dangerous this was. he did not even ask xi to do that. i told us what a great job xi was doing, we owe him a debt of gratitude for being so transparent with us. what did he do then? he then did nothing -- he waited and waited and waited, he still doesn't have a plan. >> wrong. >> i laid out back in march -- >> sir, it's his two minutes. >> so wrong. >> i laid out again in july what we should be doing. we should be providing all the

protective gear possible. the money the house has passed in order to be able to go out and get people the help they need to keep their businesses open. open schools would cost a lot of money. you should get out of your bunker and get out of the sand trap and your golf course and go in your oval office and bring together the democrats and republicans and fund what needs to be done now to save lives. >> so if we would have listened to you. >> you have two minutes, sir. >> the country would have been left wide open, millions of people would have died, not 200,000. and one person is too much, it's china's fault, it should have never happened. they stopped it from going in. when you talk about numbers you don't know how many people died in china, you don't know how many people died in russia, you don't know how many people died in india. they don't exactly give you a straight count. just so you end. i closed it, and you said he's xenophobic. you don't believe we should have closed the country.

becoming the next president. i want to quickly go through several of those. reopenings, vice president biden, you have been much more reluctant than president trump about reopening the economy and school. why? >> i know what the plan is. you've got to provide these businesses the ability to have the money to be able to reopen with the ppe as well as with the sanitation they need. you have to provide -- >> nancy pelosi. >> will he just shush for a minute. >> tell it to nancy pelosi. schumer, chuck. >> nancy pelosi and schumer will have a plan. the republicans won't meet in the senate. and he sits on his golf course and, i mean, literally, think about it. >> you probably play more than i do, joe. >> what about the question of reopenings? >> he wants to shut down this country, and i want to keep it open. and we did a great thing by shutting it down -- wait a minute, let me shut you down for a second.

just for one second. we want to, he wants to shut down the country. we just went through it. we had to because we didn't know anything about the disease. now we found that elderly people with heart problems and diabetes and different problems are very, very vulnerable. we learned a lot, young children aren't. even younger people aren't. we've learn add lot. but he wants to shut it down. more people will be hurt by continuing, if you look at pennsylvania. if you look at certain states that have been shut down, they have democrat governors all. one of the reasons they're shut down is because they want to keep it shut down until after the election on november 3rd. because it's. >> i want to move on to another subject. >> those states. >> i want to move on to another subject. >> those states are not doing well that are shut down. >> president trump, you have begun to earn creasingly question the effectiveness of masks as a disease preventer, and in fact recently you have cited the issue of waiters

touching their masks and touching plates, are you questioning -- >> no, i think the masks are okay. you have to understand, i have a mask right here, i put a mask on when i think i need it. tonight as an example, everybody's had a test and you've had social distancing and all of the things that you have to. but i wear masks when needed. i wear a mask. i don't have -- i don't wear a mask like him, every time you see him, he's got a mask. he could be speaking 200 feet away from it, and he shows up with the biggest mask i've seen. >> vice president biden, go ahead, sir. >> the way to open businesses is to give them the wherewithal -- >> i was asking you about masks. >> masks make a big difference. if we just wore masks between now -- and social distanced between now and jiaanuary, we would probably save up to 100,000 lives. >> they've also said the

experts, it's a big difference. we do them outside. we have tremendous crowds as you see on 24 hours notice. >> by the way, did you see one of the last big rallies he had. a reporter came up to him to ask him a question. he said, no, no, no, stand back, put on a mask, have you been tested. i'm way far away from those other people. that's what he said, i can't -- i'm going to be okay. he's not worried about you, he's not worried about the people out there -- >> we've had no negative effect. >> we've had no negative effect. we've had 35,,000, 40,000 people at these rallies. >> i want to finish up -- >> yes, i would. he's been irresponsible encouraging not to wear masks. >> if you can get the crowds you would do the same thing. but nobody cares.

what happened is, we closed it down and now we're reopening, we're doing record business. we had 10.4 million people in a four month period that we put back into the workforce. that's a record, the likes of which nobody's ever seen before, he wants to close down? he will shut it down again. he will destroy this country. a lot of people between drugs and alcohol and depression, when you start shutting it down, you take a look at what's happening on some of your democrat run states, where you have these tough shutdowns, i'll telling you, it's because they don't wan the to open it, one of them came out last week, we're going to open up on november 89th. why november 9th? it's after the election. they think they're hurting us by keeping them closed. people know what to do, they can social distance, they can wash their hands, wear a mask. they have to open these states up, when you look at north carolina, when you look -- these governors are under siege. pennsylvania, michigan and a couple others, you got to open these states up. it's not fair, you're talking

250 military generals and law enforcement almost every law enforcement group in the united states i have florida, i have texas, i have ohio. i have -- excuse me. portland. the sheriff came out today and staid i support president trump. i don't think you have any law enforcement. you can't say the word law enforcement. if you say the words, you'll lose all your radical left supporters. why aren't you saying those words? say the words law enforcement. if they called us in portland, we would put out the fire in half hour. they won't do it. they are run by radical left democrats. if you look at chicago, any place you want to look. seattle. they heard we were coming in the following day and put up their hands and we got backseatle. minneapolis we got it back. we believe in law and order. you doint. the top ten cities are run by

democrats and many cases radical left and have you wrapped around their physicfinger. you don't want to say anything about law and order. of the people of this country want and demand law and order. you're afraid to say it. >> i'll return to the question of race. vice president biden, after the grand jury in the breonna taylor case decided not to charge any of the police with homicide, you said it raises the question quote whether justice could be equally applied in america. do you believe there is a separate but unequal system of justice for blacks in this country? >> yes, there's a systemic injustice in this country. in education and work and in law enforcement. and the way in which it's enforced. look, the vast majority of police officers are good decent honorable. they risk their lives every day.

there are bad apples. they have to be sorted out and held accountable. i'll call a together an entire group of people at the white house, everything from the civil rights groups to the police officers kp chiefs and work this out. we change the way in which we have more transparency. in when these things happen. these cops aren't happy to see what happened to george floyd. these cops aren't happy tho see what happened to breonna taylor. most don't like it. we have to have a system where people are held accountable. violence and response is never appropriate. never appropriate. pea peaceful protest is. >> what is peaceful protest? when they run through the middle of the town and burn down stores and kill people all over the place. you say it is. >> i'd like to continue with the

issue of the race. this month, your administration directed federal agencies to end racial sensitivity training that addresses white privilege or critical race theory. why did you decide to do that to end racial sensitivity training and do you believe that there is systemic racism in the country? >> i ended it because it's racist. a lot of people were complaining that they were asked to do things that were insane. it was a radical revolution that was taking place. in our military. in our schools. all over the place. and you know it and so does everybody else. >> what is radical racial sensitivity training? >> if you are a certain person, you had no status in life. it was a reversal. if you look at the people. we were paying people hundreds of thousands to teach very bad ideas. and frankly very sick ideas.

to keep them from having to use force and be able to talk people down. we have to have community policing like with had before. officers get to know the people in the community. that's when crime went down. it didn't go up. it went down. and so we have to be engaged. >> that's not what we're talking about. defunding the police. >> that's not true. >> he doesn't have any law -- no law enforcement support. almost nothing. who do you have. one group that supports you? >> we don't have time. >> name one law enforcement group that came out and supported you. >> i'll take back the -- i want to get to another subject. which is the issue of protest. in many cities that turned violent in portland, oregon, especially we had more than 100 straight days of protests which i think you would agree.

talk about peaceful. many turns into riots. vice president, you say that people who commit crimes should be held accountable. the question i have is as the democratic nominee and earlier tonight you said you are the democratic party right now, have you ever called the democratic mayor of portland or governor of oregon and said you have to stop this. bring in the national guard. do whatever it takes. stop the days and months of violence in portland. >> i don't hold public office now. i am a former vice president. i have made it clear in my public statement that the violence should be prosecuted. it should be. anyone who commits it -- >> you never called for the people. -- the leaders in portland and in oregon to call and bring the national guard and knock off 100 days of riots.

a fixing of the va. which was a mess under him. 308,000 people died because they didn't have proper healthcare. it was a mess. we have a 91% approval rating at the v.a. we take care of the vets. we rebuilt the military. the job that we have done and i'll tell you, some people say the most important. by the end of the first term i'll have 300 federal judges and court of appeals judges. and hopefully three great supreme court justices. that is a record the likes of which very few people -- one ocht reasons i'll have so many judges. president obama and him left me 128 judges to fill. when you leave office you don't leave any judges. that's like you don't do that. they left 128 openings and if i were a member of his party, because they have a little different philosophy. if you left us 128 openings, you

what do you believe about the science of climate change and what will you do in the next four years to confront it? >> i want crystal clean water. and air. i want beautiful clean air. we have the lowest carbon. look at our numbers now. we are doing phenomenal. i haven't destroyed our businesses. our businesses aren't put out of commission. if you look at the paris accord it was a disaster. people are actually very happy about what's going on. our businesses are doing well. as far as the fires are concerned, you need forest management in addition to everything else. the forest floor is loaded up with dead trees. years old and like tinder and leaves and everything else. you drop a cigarette the what de science of climate change? >> i believe that we have to do everything we can to have e mac late air and water.

and whatever else we can that's good. we're planting a billion trees the billion tree project. >> do you believe that human pollution, gas and greenhouse gas contribute to the global warming? >> a lot of things do. to an extent, yes. but we have to do better management of the forest. every year, i get the call. california is burning. california is burning. if that was cleaned. if you had forest management, you wouldn't be getting those calls. in europe they live the forest cities. they maintain their forest. they manage the forest. i was with the head of a major country. it's a forest city. he said we have trees that are far more, they ignite easier than california. there shouldn't be a problem. i spoke with the governor. i said at some point you can't ever year have hundreds of

thousands of acres of land just burnt to the ground. that's burning down because of a lack -- >> in you believe in the science of climate change, why roll back the obama clean power plant which limited carbon emission in power plants. >> it was driving energy prices through the sky. >> why relax fuel economy standards that will create more pollution from cars and trucks? >> not really. what's happening is the car is much less expensive and much safer car and talk about a tiny difference and what would happen because of the cost of car. you would have double and triple number of cars purchased. we have the old slugs. ten, 12 years old. it would be safer and much cheaper. >> in california -- >> cars are off the market. people with afford a car. by the way we'll see how it turns out. people agree with me. many people. the car has gotten so expensive

because they computers all over the place for an extra little bit of gas. and i'm okay with electric too. i'm all for it. i have given big incentives. what they have done in california is crazy. >> vice president, respond to the president's climate change record. i want to ask you about concern. you proposed $2 trillion in green jobs. you talk about new limits. not abolishing. but limits on fracking. ending use of fossil fuel by 2035. and zero net emission of greenhouse gas by 2050. the president says a lot of the things would tank the economy and cost millions of jobs. >> he's wrong. number two, if in fact when our during the administration recovery act i was able to bring down the cost of renewable energy to cheaper than or cheap as coal and gas and oil.

nobody is going to build another coal fired plant in america. no one will build another oil fire plant in america. they will move to renewable energy. take the federal fleet and turn it into a fleet that is run on their electric vehicles. making sure we can do that. and put 500,000 charging stations in the highways that we'll build in the future. and build an economy that in fact is going to provide for the ability to take 4 million buildings and make sure they in fact are weatherized in a way that will emit significantly less gas and oil. because the heat will not be going out. there's so many things we can do now to create thousands of jobs. we can get to net zero in terms of energy production. by 2035. not only not costing people jobs, creating jobs. creating millions of good paying

jobs. not 15 bucks an hour. prevailing wage. and having a new infrastructure that is green. and the first thing i will do, i will rejoin the paris accord. i will join the paris accord because with us out of it look what's happening. it's all falling apart. and talk about someone who has no relationship to foreign policy. brazil the rain forest in brazil is being torn down. ripped down. more carbon is absorbed in that rain forest than in the united states. instead of doing something about that, i would be gathering up and making sure we had the country's of the world coming up with $20 billion and saying here's $20 billion stop tearing down the forest. and if you don't you'll have significant economic consequences. >> what about the argument that president trump says that you have to balance environmental interest and economic interest

and he's drawn his line. >> he hasn't drawn a line. he makes sure he wants to make sure methane is not a problem. you don't have to have standards for automobiles that exist now. he says the -- it's all true. >> the green new deal. it's not 20 billion. it's $100 trillion. >> i'm talking about the -- >> rebuild the building. it's the dumbest -- airplanes are out of business. two car systems are out. where they want to take out the cows. that's not true either. this is a 100 trillion. more money than our country could make in 100 years if -- >> i actually have studied your plan. and it includes upgrading 4

escalators. they were a disaster and a disgrace to the country. we have caught them. we have caught them all. we have it on tape. you gave the idea for the logan act against general flynn. recaught you in a sense. president obama was sitting in the office and knew about it too. don't talk about a free transition. as far as the ballots it's a disaster. a solicited ballot is okay. you solicit. you're asking. they send it back. you send it back. i did that. if you have an unsolicited. they're sending millions of ballots. there's fraud. they found them in creeks. in a waste paper basket. all over the place. they sent two in a democrat area. a thousand ballots everybody got two ballots. this is going to be a fraud like you have never seen. it's nice on november 3 you're watching and see who won the election.

we'll do well. people are really happy with the job we have done. we won't know, we might not know for months because the ballots will be all over. take a look at what happened in new york and new jersey. what happened in virginia and other places. they're not losing 2%. which is too much in election could be won or lost with that. they're losing 30%. it's a fraud. it's shame. can you imagine where they say you have to have your ballot in by november 10. that's seven days after the election in theory should have been announced. we have major states with that run by democrats. >> two minutes. president trump, you'll be able to continue. you have been charging for months mail in balloting will be a disaster. you say it's rigged. it will lead to fraud. in 2018, in the last midterm election. 31 million people voted mail in

voting. that was a quarter of all the voters that year. cast ballots by mail. now that millions of mail in ballots have gone out, what are you going to do about it and are you counting on the supreme court including a justice barrett to settle an dispute? >> i'm counting on them to look at the ballots. i hope we don't need them. i think so. what's happening is incredible. i read today at least 1% of the ballots for 2016 invalidated. they take and we don't like them. >> what are you going to do about it? millions go out. >> go vote. a solicited ballot. or go vote. >> the fact millions of people. >> go and vote. like they used to. >> either do a solicited ballot. you send it in and send it back.

and send they have mailman with lots -- did you see what's going on. west virginia. mailman setting ballots. they're being sold and dumped in rivers. this is a horrible thing for the country. >> there is no evidence of that. >> this will not end well. >> five states had mail in ballots for the last decade. five. including two republican states. and you don't have to solicit the ballot. it's sent to you. they're saying it has to be a postmark by the time election day. if it doesn't get in until the 7th it should be counted. he's afraid of counting the votes. >> you're wrong. >> vice president biden the biggest problem over the years with mail in voting hasn't been fraud.

it has been that sizable numbers. hundreds of thousands are thrown out because they have not been properly filled out or some other irregularity. the question i have is are you concerned that the supreme court with a justice barrett will settle any dispute? >> i'm concerned any court would settle this. here's the deal. when you file -- get a ballot and fill it out, you're supposed to have an affidavit. if you didn't know you have someone say that this is me. you should be able to. if in fact you can verify that's you before the ballot is thrown out. that is sufficient to be able to count the ballot. someone made a mistake and not dotting the correct i. who they voted for, testify, say who they voted for. say it's you. that is totally legitimate. >> you have 80 million ballots sent in swamping the system. it can't be done. already it's been fraud.

going into the this fairly nervous. the former vice president showed up. a lot to analyze and discuss. >> that was a hot mess. inside a dumpster fire. inside a train wreck. that was the worst debate i have ever seen. it wasn't even a debate. it was a disgrace. and it's primarily because of president trump. who spent the entire time interrupting not abiding by the rules he agreed to. lying. maliciously attacking the son of the vice president. when asked to condemn white supremacy. he brought up the name of a far right group. and said stand back. and standby. we'll talk about who won the debate and who lost. one thing for sure, the american people lost. tonight.

that was horrific. >> you took the word out of my mouth. i'm going to say it like it is. that was a shit show. we're on cable. we can say it. apologies for being crude. but that is really the phrase i'm getting from people on both sides of the aisle on text and the only phrase i can think of to describe it. i couldn't agree with you more. the people who have been hurt the most by that are the people who are genuinely looking to see what each candidate stands for. and who they should vote for. there are still people out there who haven't made up their mind. on which candidate to vote for or whether to vote. i'm not sure that particularly on the ladder point that that performance and that the theater there, the reality tv show. the bad reality tv show will help them in the least. >> it was a complete disaster.

on all fronts. if you came into this thinking that two men in their 70s who want to be the leader of the free world for the next four years could have a reasonable exchange of ideas. you came away from debate thinking it's not possible. you could hardly hear them at certain points. there was so much cross talk. as you pointed out, we should be clear here, this is not both sides type of situation. there was one party on that stage. interrupting. yelling over the moderator. and from the very beginning what was so striking to watch was that usually these debates build. and build and build to the end. we started at a 12. on a scale one to ten. the president was really -- i think in a very agitated state. early on in the debate. and the tone was set.

>> i have heard already from people who very much support the president. want him to do well. as this was going on. he was way too hot. they knew he was going to be aggressive. he was going to try to be on offense as much as possible. this took it too far. even for donald trump. >> think about if you're undecided. and don't like the president's style but some of the policy. and you come in tonight and the president -- i don't know if joe biden won the debate. he had nice moments. i thought he was kind of flat. that's irrelevant. the way the president behaved, again the antidefamation league is already out there asking the president to clarify why he didn't condemn white supremacist. and told the group to stand back and standby. the way that the president behaved on the debate stage is the way the president behaved in american politics. he's dominant and if you like that, great. he was rude, he didn't abide by

the standards or decency. it was really frankly embarrassing. to clarify something, it was almost entire lu trump. i wasn't talking about joe biden the part i was unsure about. the moderator. he didn't have control of the debate stage for much of the evening. he didn't remind the president he was violating the rules until one hour and 13 minutes into the debate. >> the whole thing was disgraceful. and when you talk about the fact that the president took it to a new low, there was one part in particular. it's hard to pick out. that was really unbelievable. which is when joe biden was talking about his son who died. who he was incredibly close to. talking about him in the war hero. and somebody who was in the military. and what did the president do? he shot at him about his son who is living as a drug addict.

that was a moment joe biden didn't prepare for. he was trying to pivot away from the talk about his family. in that moment he turned to the camera and said my son did have drug issues. like many of you out there. that wasn't something -- we talked about it. that he talks about very much. that was a moment where joe biden was able to shine. as the president was incredibly low. much lower than his people. >> political attacks and things that lack decency. in that moment it was obvious the president was trying to shoe horn a political attack against one son. while biden was talking about another son who served in the military and died. that comes across. the american people are not stupid. it goes to show another thing that seemed clear to me. really from the beginning was the lack of control. that the president had over his own strategy. the plan he had going into this.

what did he want the american people to take away? you couldn't tell. in so many instances you couldn't understand what he was trying to say. he was yelling over people. >> one final thought. chris wallace was pressing the president on the idea of would he concede if he loses. joe biden said yes, of course, i will. the president wouldn't. it occurred to me the thought that the president doesn't think he's going to win the election. and he wants to bring the rest of us down with him. >> anderson? >> thank you very much. david axelrod, i don't think we have seen a president of the united states completely lacking in shame. just shameless. and immoral. there's not a moral fiber in this man. and i don't know what came out of the debate. i don't know what side won. i don't know what voters want.

but you cannot have watched that debate -- i would think, and be proud of our president. the way he thinks of us as viewers as americans trying to decide about the future of the country. can anybody come away from that knowing what trump wants for the next four years? >> does this surprise you? >> no. to see it on such full display. >> the guy on the stage is the guy we have seen for four years. rick santorum predicted what he would do. the question is whether he over torqued it and went over board. i would say way over board. and i don't think that he is going to profit from this. i think trump may have ended his presidency tontd. with his performance. >> i thought the president was going to come out hot. >> he did. >> he did come out hot. >> it's not even funny.

are you proud of the president of the united states? >> i think he over played his hand. here's what i saw on stage. the president who -- you can hear it by him reciting the things that happened throughout the presidency. the he feels like he's been mistreated and by the prior administration. >> all the narcissist and psycho paths feel that. doesn't make it true. >> the president came out hot. and because he is feeling aggrieved and i'm telling you. he felt like this is his opportunity to sort of turn the table and turn it onto joe biden. and give biden the grief he has been given over four years. i don't think is worked. to answer correctly. i think he came out way too hot. i don't think biden particularly did a great job.

but i think that was over shadowed by the fact trump was over doing it. >> it was -- here you have a president playing victim. when 200,000 plus people have died. from covid-19. we know this is a president full of grievance. tonight he took the presidency and the office of the presidency to a new low. the american people who have suffered for the last six months plus with this pandemic, deserve a better debate and better explanations from the president of the united states. and what i heard from him was contemptible. out of control. almost monsterous at points. when he was talking about hunter biden on a personal level. refusing to denounce white supremacy. >> standby. >> what does that mean? >> what was that? >> he's so full of grievance. but can't get passed himself. if he was looking to change the

mind of any women voters, a lot of women would look at this and be frightened by it. >> first of all, jake said this was a circus. circus workers reached out and say actually we take offense. we are careful and respectful people. we work very carefully. circus workers are taking offense. this was worse than a circus. only three things happened. number one. donald trump refused to condemn white supremacy.

look what the proud boys are doing because the president of the united states prefused to to condemn supremacy. >> what surprises you? he was asked these questions before at a presidential debate. this is how he led. i thought joe biden did fine. he hung in there, like riding a bucking bronco. and he showed his fundamental decency which is what people are

yearning for in contrast to this president. everybody was critical of biden when he was relatively quiet. he gained during those months. i think the same thing happened tonight. the time he didn't get to speak because the president was interrupting him, i think that worked for biden. >> should there be other debates? >> the vice presidential debate is next and there should be two more presidential debates. >> i don't think the country will be yearning for these. you know what will happen if the biden says he doesn't want to dignify another debate. i don't think the country wants another one of these spectacle. >> trump failed tonight.

he had to figure out a way to get women back on board for him. that kind of kindergarten behavior won't get female voters on board. he said he was going to reach out to african-americans on the economy. had an opportunity to brag on his black record and instead talked about portland. a clinical matter, i am upset. everybody i know is disgusted, upset or angry. even my republican friends. there was not a single thing he needed to do tonight except offend a lot of credible people. >> he was a bully. he wasn't paying attention to his own rules -- >> well, that -- >> -- that his people agreed to. biden would say it's hard to get

a word in with clown or just shut up. >> there were a couple of times when biden did interrupt the president and it threw the president off and those were real missed opportunities. one of the other things the president did was by being the person he is, we are talking about how he did as opposed to biden just standing there ends up looking better than anybody. >> i thought there were a couple of moments when biden did poorly. he would not give an answer on packing the court. i thought that was a bad moment for joe biden not to say i am not going to do those things. it was lost in this debate. he did come out hot.

i don't think chris wallace -- i understand jake said he didn't step in, but i think chris wallace was overwhelmed. you are in there in the moment and you don't expect this. i thought wallace did a pretty good job shutting him down. i thought he was helpful to joe biden on many occasions shutting the president down. by the end he said two minutes and you agree to it. the president calmed down and the last half hour or so was somewhat of a reasonable debate. but the die was cast. i think the president got hurt tonight. >> how about when they were talking at the end about the potential for rigged election. the president was frightening, threatening when he talked about the election. he said this is not going to end well. what does that mean to the

american public? that if you go and vote in person or you vote by mail, that something is going to happen? what is going to happen? was he predicting violence? >> i don't think that's fair. that's taking it too far. what the president is saying -- >> the same debate about white supremacy. >> an armed group to stand down and stand by. >> i don't think he was telling them that, but he did not answer the question directly and he should have and it was wrong. i have no idea why he didn't. >> he did. he answered it by his silence. >> why he didn't do it when directly asked that, i don't know why he didn't do it and it was a mistake. >> when asked about the young man shot in kenosha, he defended
