hello, everybody. thank you for sharing your day with us. joe biden's presidential win looks even more impressive today. we project him the win in arizona. even china now gets the clear and convincing math and congratulated the president-elect today and said it respects the choice of the american people. get that, communist china respects your choice. but people paid with your tax dollars continue to ignore it. >> we're moving forward here at

the white house under the assumption that there will be a second trump term. our assumption is the second trump term, we think that he won that election. and any speculation about what joe biden might do i think is moot at this point. >> peter navarro is part of thi trump's denial. reports say this ivanka and jared kushner are torn worried that it could hurt his prospects of a 2024 comeback. but we have not heard directly from the president in more than a week. he is described as angry and sulking and pushing advisers to find some way to keep him in power. but the math is undeniable. plus a watchdog group is rebuking the fraud claims, quote, there is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes or was

in any way compromised. there is a rare thing on the president's schedule today. a meeting to discuss the coronavirus crisis. the topic is "operation warp speed," the vaccine effort even more critical now as the united states sets sad records for new cases for the third straight day. you can see the trend line right there going almost straight up. more than 150,000 new cases on thursday. there is also a record number of hospitalizations. both are troubling trends. and now a new model points to an expected increase in deaths as well. putting the number at 200,000 more deaths by march 1 if new measures to slow the spread aren't implemented. this morning dr. anthony fauci says it is still possible he believes to stop that from happening. >> people are letting their guards down. >> if we do the things that are simple public health measures, that soaring will level and start to come down. you add that to the help of a vaccine, we can turn this around.
8:03 am
it is not futile. >> more on the coronavirus numbers in a moment. but as i noted, joe biden's victory looks even more impressive today as we called arizona for the former vice president, now president-elect. a little over 11,000 vote lead, that is narrow. but significant because not since bill clinton back in 1996 as a democrat carried arizona for president. also more impressive when you take a look at the map now. pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, arizona, and likely georgia. georgia's recounting votes but it is in biden's camp right now. look at this, this is 2020, this is 216. it would be five flips for joe biden if georgia stays there. and plus congressional district right here in eastern nebraska. those are big flips from the 2016 map into the 2020 map. and if you go to another look, it actually reaffirms something else. as the president continues to insist there was fraud, continues to insist that he can

overturn the results of the election, it is just now beyond the path of ludicrous. let's assume georgia stays with biden. north carolina which we haven't called yet, but let's assume that goes trump. if the president were to somehow overturn the results in a state, let's say it were pennsylvania, okay, joe biden is still president. let's say it is pennsylvania and michigan, which is ludicrous, the biden lead there is almost 150,000 votes, but even if he did those two, joe biden is still president. but let's say in the states where the lead is more narrow, let's say somehow the president could take away the biden win in georgia, arizona, nevada. three states. guess what? joe biden is still president. the math here is overwhelming. yb sxwrb wi joe biden will be present in 68 days. barack obama says that the math clear and convincing. he wishes the american people would embrace it, even trump
8:05 am
assumer, but he says because of the way the president lies and the way the president gets help with those lies, a lot of american americans still didn't don't booir . >> when donald trump won, i called him to congratulate him. his margin of victory over hillary clinton wasn't as great as joe biden's margin over him, but if you are listening to some of the talk radio that some trump voters are listening to or getting these tweets, those allegations are presented as facts. so you have millions who think, oh, yeah, there must be cheating because the president said as to. >> let's discuss this with jackie compajack compa jackie. you heard president obama saying
8:06 am
that the president says things and people believe it. and this tweet, had a heartfelt phone call with donald trump who says he is a real list who will do the right thing, but he wants to see what states do in terms of certification and if he loses, talking more about all he's accomplished. interesting there, the real lis part who will did the right thing. but the president seems to be at least moving in the right direction. >> but he already has lost, when you look at the count. joe biden's lead is pretty much insurmountable at this point. and listen, president obama knows something about having donald trump delegitimize a presidency. he did it throughout president obama's presidency. but the difference is, then he was a reality star and carnival
8:07 am
barker. now he will be the next president and there is a lot more responsibility that goes along with it because so many people voted for him even though they lost. so the actual right thing to do would be try to sooth those folks and transition them into what will be a biden presidency. it won'ting somethi won't be something that they like, but everyone gets behind who the next president is traditionally. >> and maybe it will never end, maybe it will be the same in the post presidency and maybe in e trump 2024 comebacking c incamp. but president trump tweets for years the dems have been preaching how unsafe and rigged our elections have been and he says rigged election. our world of alternative facts and parallel universes i guess will continue forever perhaps.
8:08 am
>> i would expect it too. and i think what you saw there is a pattern that we've seen from trump friends all along going back to the 2016 campaign, they sort of go out in public and say the president or candidate trump is just about to do the responsible thing as a sort of inducement for him to do that because they feel like a preemptive positive reinforcement might draw him in to that space. and then of course he rarely if ever actually follows through with that. so i do think that we're approaching a real moment of truth for the republican party where this party is showing in every way possible that he has no intention of exiting the stage quietly or even semi graciously. as a party, they will have to decide not just what are they going to do now and the next time the president is sworn in, because joe biden as you say will be the president january 20th. but how much are they going to allow their agenda and message
8:09 am
to be dictated by this person who clearly has very, very limited interest in playing a role in governing. >> it is a fascinating point because the president clearly wants to keep them under his thumb the next four years. you want my support in the georgia senate runoffs, be nice to me. and that was something in the interviews of barack obama as part of his book tour, he says if republicans aren't going to listen to president obama, but they should think twice. >> i'm more troubled by the fact that other republican officials who clearly know better are going along with this, are humoring him in this fashion. it is one more step this delegitimizing not just the incoming biden biden administration, but democracy generally. and that is a dangerous path. >> i don't really care whether you are a democrat, republican or independent, it is really hard to argue with that. >> right, but what republicans are doing, they are looking at
8:10 am
the people that voted for them, who voted for donald trump, who aren't going anywhere. even if president trump does exit stage right, his voters will still remain and still at least for the near future be very supportive of him. so republicans have an eye on their own re-election and their own information k450u fortunes. and as far as 2024, i can't even talk about it yet, but the folks that want him to run for preside president, eyeing a run at 2024, any didn't wa they didn't wa they don't want him to tear down their potential aspirations even if he doesn't run. so there is incentive for them not to speak out. >> and if you believe, and this is about the president, if you believe the president's quote/unquote a realist and he will watch the certification,
8:11 am
then you would look there for november 20th when georgia certifies the votes. i know the other ones come after that. the president would have to flip three states, depending on the size of the states, he would have to flip four states. forgive me, but pigs will fly first. is that sort of what we're waiting for to get past georgia and another state and at least that point would the republicans say mr. president, stop? >> the problem is i don't think that we have any evidence that the president is a realist. when we talk about he would have to flip three, four states, there is no evidence that he has a political or legal strategy for flipping even one state and yet he is persisting in this dead end strategy the way he is right now. so i do think where other republicans are concerned, yes, we are waiting for certification in some of the bigger states where it just becomes procedurally sort of a dead letter even if the president does want to proceed with fighting the election. his options will have exhausted themselves and then potentially
8:12 am
republicans have a way to just say sorry, sir, you tried your best, your lawyers tried their best, and this is where we are. but again, given how fearful the party has been of antagonizing him to date, and given that the georgia senate runoffs are out there, and given that as jackie said the 2024 dynamics are already in the air and in the water, i don't know that i'd be terribly optimistic that you are studly going to have some mass profile of courage from republican lawmakers. >> and to that point, one of the interesting tests for joe biden, he ran a campaign saying that i can get along with the republicans. he did in the obama days, he was often up on capitol hill with mitch mcconnell. they are not great friends, but they did trust each other back then. their word was good to each other back then. listen to ron klain, he gave his first interview last night where he said joe biden is starting to reach out to some republicans, but not leader mcconnell yet. >> joe biden has spoken to republicans. he has spoken to some senators
8:13 am
and governors, i won't go into the names. but he has not spoken to senator mcconnell. i think that senator mcconnell still seems to be insisting that president trump won the election. he didn't. there will be a time and place for joe biden and snenator mcconnell to talk. >> and this will be a giant test whether joe biden is right, that the republicans are ready to do business. >> absolutely. and he would wouldn't name who he has spoken to, so that in and of itself speaks volumes.wouldne has spoken to, so that in and of itself speaks volumes. >> it does. up next for us, coronavirus outbreaks accelerating to numbers that are just unthinkable. president trump next hour is doing something that is sadly quite rare these days, holding a meeting on the "operation warp speed," the effort to rush covid vaccines. there is encouraging news on the vaccine front. the here and now is bleak, even more bleak than when the workweek began. let's walk through the numbers. again, 44 states, that is the orange and red, 44 states more new covid infections now compared to a week ago. the states in red, more than 50% new infections this week. five states holding steady. only one trending dourg r down,t is georgia which is having

8:22 am
growth of the virus right now. as you said, 153,000 cases yesterday. and it is going to continue to rise until we did something differently. cases are up 40% in the last week, hospitalizations are up 20%. which may be the most critical issue. we are going to run out of room in hospitals unless we do something different. and what we need to do different is exactly the opposite of what senator paul said, which is we need to get everyone in this country to wear a mask. every single person in this country needs to wear a mask when they go out in public. >> it would also -- i think you would agree it would also be nice if the president would spend daily attention on this. the current president does have a meeting on this today, he has been months. throughout the campaign, he essentially just waved the back of his hand at the rising case count. ron klain will be the chief of staff when joe biden becomes the president. listen to how he describes the change that will happen the

moment joe biden is president. >> he will have a covid coordinator who works in the white house who has direct access to him and will be briefing him daily. he will have a team of people that he works coordinating vaccine distribution, fixing the supply chain, fixing the testing problems. >> i assume that that is music to your ears if you will. my big question is, what happens between now and then? 68 days away. >> well, hopefully what would happen is the incoming administration would coordinate with the outgoing administration so that they can be up and running on day one in terms of vaccine distribution, in terms of understanding how much ppe we have, be understanding what our ventilator reserve is,
8:24 am
understanding what our teing capaci testing capacity is, what every state needs. except we didn't haon't have th thousand. the other side of that is with the inattention this administration has had to the virus, the president hasn't said a word about it, he has said more about cable news rankings than he has about the covid pandemic. without any action on the part of this administration, deaths are going to mount, hospitals will fill, you will see refrigerator trucks in american cities. so we can't wait until the next administration takes office on january 20. we need to act now. >> yesterday dr. osterhome floated the idea of a four to six week lockdown which was shot down by other members saying no, we're just discussing a whole lot of things but the
8:25 am
president-elect prefers not to do that. but illinois governor, he says at least at a state level, something like that just might be necessary. listen. >> we're running out of time. and we're running out of options. our growth in new cases is now exponential. the numbers didnon't lie. if things don't take a turn in the coming day, we'll quickly reach a point when some form of a mandatory stay-at-home order is all that will be left. >> should this in your view be a state by state issue still or might there be a need for a national lockdown of some sort? >> well, first of all, the virus gets to dictate this, it doesn't matter what i say, it doesn't matter what the governors say, it is what the virus says. and what you will start to see on state levels is that hospitals will good seexceed th capacity to treat patients effectively and states will be forced to lock down. so it is better to consider what we can do short of that now, get

president trump's claims of massive election fraud are getting a forceful rebuke from the people who know best, a group of national, state and private election officials including federal employees working in the trump administration say this year's vote is a cause for celebration despite what you hear from the president. here is part of the group's statement. the november 3 election was the most secure in american history. right now across the country, election officials are reviewing and double checking the entire election process prior to finalizing the result. there is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised. new mexico secretary of state is with us. she is the president of the

in our statement, there is a process and we've been saying this all along, a process that happens after every election to go back and make sure that the voting systems counted the alexandria being elect accurately. most states use paper ballots to use that record to audit or voting systems to make sure that they did count directly, that nothing was tampered with, that there wasn't any maybe accident am programming mistakes, and that is exactly what is happening throughout the states right now is that everybody is going back and double and triple checking to make sure that we do have accurate totals for this election. >> and if there is a trump supporter watching, i don't want them to see the d next to your name and say that is just a democrat from new mexico, i shouldn't listen to her. and so some including republicans say this is a great year. listen. >> we have ongoing investigations, but we've not

8:35 am
ever since the election of 2016 when we know in a there were forei there were foreign actors attempting to interfere in our elections and were looking for ways to penetrate our voting systems, we have come together in a bipartisan fashion as chief election officials around the country working together with the department of homeland security to put so many safe guards in place. and the safe guards have to do of course with protecting online voter registration systems, online results reporting systems, but also protect the safety and security of our voting systems at the ground level, those machines that count the votes. and that involves those high tech solutions that we're talking about in terms of ensuring the safety and security of those systems, but it also ro involves the paper ballots, post-election audits, the testing that every machine goes through before it is deployed to a polling place to make sure

there is an accurate count. and again, this is a rigorous process that every election official no matter what party they are a member of goes through in a transparent and public way to ensure that there is accuracy in the vote count. not just on the front end, but on the back end. and so to me, i think that the fact that we all came together regardless of party over the last four years to work together to put these great systems in place around the country, that is the story. and that is what i'm personally the most proud of. >> amen. amen. appreciate your work, madame secretary and the work of democrats, republicans, some are nonpartisan around the country, but pulled it off in a challenging year. thank you for your time. and this just in, dozens of secret service agents and officers are now in quarantine or isolation after either becoming infected with the coronavirus or coming into contact with someone who has the
