cdc adviser recommends the u.s. using johnson & johnson vaccine with a warning. good evening, i am kate baldwin in for erin burnett. the moment leading into the fatal shooting of the 16-year-old ma'kiah bryant. you can see in the spot shadow of what we added of there is appear odded to be a scuffle an bryant lunged into another woman with a knife. this is the latest of several videos we have seen of the deadly incident. the body cam video released within hours of bryant's death. the timing of the shooting and the verdict of derek chauvin's murder trial drove officials to release those videos quickly.

athena jones is outside live in columbus, ohio tonight. what's the latest on the ground right now? >> reporter: kate, funeral arrangements for ma'kiah is being finalized. many in the city are mourning a life that ended too soon. >> reporter: a new view of the shooting of bryant's. this angle from a neighbor security camera across the street. the officer arriving on the scene. emerging from the vehicle and shooting bryant in black as she appeared to lunged at another woman in pink. the police department arguing the use of force was necessary

to protect the young woman in pink. >> i would ask you if that's your family member up against the car that had a puppy in her hand, what would you want that officer to do in that split second that they had a chance to stop harm to others? we have the duty ato protect th public ourselves. >> immediately upon exiting the vehicle, officer sees one person in possession of a knife and he sees a potential person standing next to the order. the potential victim could have possibly lost their life. >> explain why the officer took these actions and why he did so quickly?

>> the officer's action would justify under the purview of the use of force. >> reporter: the city is grieving a tragic loss and stretching the importance of transparency. >> we are grieving, so many deadly encounters with law enforcement. all of us to make sure we are supporting folks in the community right now that are grieving but also calling and demanding for change reform and jus justice and transparency. bryant's mother grappling with the pain of losing her daughter. >>. >> my heart is really broken right now because i miss my

baby. >> reporter: paula bryant says she's grieving and unable to watch the full video of her daughter's final moment which is is understandable. >> athena, thank you. >> out front right now is congre congresswoman of ohio. thank you for being here. you have seen these videos of the shooting of ma'khia bryant, what do you think went wrong? >> we can't say the lady in the pink would have been killed. here is what i believe, you see the 11 seconds, four shots and a teenager on the ground dead. there has to be a better way. one size can't fit all. when i hear the police say they are trained to go to the center of the body and to shoot. here is a situation for the

police had been called. they knew they were coming into a situation with girls, a teenager and two women. we should have been in deescalation mode. it should not be a car pulls up and the officer gets out within 10 seconds. there was another lady that was already on the ground and m ma'khia had the kitchen knife in her hands. i can't say her intention were to kill this person. we should be saving all lives. we have to have a better situation especially as we were on the same day, the same hour waiting for the verdict in the george floyd's case. i was there with that family grieving, had been with the family with casey goodson and andre hill. all of us are saying enough is enough. we have to learn how to

deescalate. we have of a better practice, policy and procedure that it is to go in and put four bullets in a child's chest with a kitchen knife. i am sorry. this is too hard and too emotional for me right now to respond to. right now too many black americans are dying. >> your pain and anguish, we are hearing it over and over again and people are exhausted of it. there has been four people shot to death by law enforcement in the last four months in columbus. do you have a problem with your police department in columbus? >> let me just tell ya, in

col columbus, across this nation, minneapolis or texas or does not matter where it is. we have systematic racist. we have differences in how communities of color are treated and in my opinion. i think benewe have to look at schlt i don't support a system that you drive up inand the automatic thing is to put a bullet in a chest of a 16-years-old. it is appalling that we can't haves someone say our system is to train officers to go to the center of the body no matter what. so, if she had a water gun or a sandwich or keys or cell phone and it looks like she was going to hit or harm someone, the

answer is four bullets, six bullets in the back or in the chest? that's not acceptable. >> congresswoman, thank you for coming on. i appreciate it. >> thank you. out front with me now is roberto senior. he's former chief of tucson, arizona. he was member of president obama's police task force. congresswoman beatty. i hope you heard our conversation. she's saying there has to be a better way. she's not in a place where she's ready to accept that was the right way. that was the only outcome to happen was to see the officer arrives on the scene and four bullets in the 16-years-old's chest. what do you think of the officer's actions?

>>. >> the officer was placed in a terrible situation. i am not arguing the anger and the frustration and the pain and hurt that's going on in the community. however, i think we have to be realistic. everyone can sit there and say there has to be a better way. when the officer got there, it was immediate explosive situation in 11 seconds. there was an attack in the other girl that was pushed down and attacked with a knife. she immediately went towards the young woman up against the vehicle and the officer in my opinion had no other resources to stop that threat. tasers don't always work. it was just a terrible situation but i believe the police officer

acted as he's in training and the law states it is lawful. >> the police released body camera within hours. among the fastest release. one of the reasons why that the city did is the timing of the shooting, about half on hour before a verdict was announced insi the derek chauvin's trial. do you think this should be the new standard for transparency? >> when we were in the task force, that was one of our recommendations, we need to be as transparent as possible. every officer works in different laws. you had this incident with information released quickly and you have other incidents where it is delayed quite a while and that causes suspicion and unrest in the community. that's the laws the department has to work under.

it is always best in my community to get the video out as quickly as possible that demonstrates transparency. sometimes the video will show the officer act appropriately or sometimes not. getting it out quickly is the best way to deal with any issues. >> holding it back is just yesterday, that's not this moment that we are in today. it is all about building trust really in this moment. that's a huge part of this. thank you for coming out, i appreciate it. out front for us next. north carolina bracing for more protests as we learn new details of where deputy shot andrew brown jr. >> the male with gunshot wounds in the back. >> we are talking about columbus. where is the body cam video for this shooting? the feds is looking into whether

seven deputies have been placed on administrative leave as a result of a shooting. two others resigned and one retired. police say they were trying to serve an arrest warrant on brown. deputies opened fire on the car he was driving. investigators are sharing very little information. diane gallagher is out front with the latest. >> reporter: after three day of peaceful protest in north carolina. >> you see all these people here want answer. >> reporter: tommy wutan revealing seven deputies involved in the death of andrew brown jr. >> there is nothing to hide, i am trying to let the investigation unfollow. >> reporter: wutan meeting with

the brown's family for the first time. he offered condolences, the family called "the sit down" is a waste of time. >> the sheriff claims, he wants the same. >> their wishes will be granted. i want what the citizens of this county wants. >> the state law prevents the video from body camera worn by department. >> we asked to release the video. >> reporter: cnn joined to petition the court to release the videos. officials have not given many details of the shooting itself. deputies were served.

mr. brown was convicted. >> reporter: brown was in his car trying to get away. >> they stood behind him. i could not tell you who shot him. one of the officers or maybe a couple shot him. >> reporter: brown was shot in the back. >> one man 40 years of age, gunshots to the back. >> i have never in my life see a man takes the time and loves his children the way he did and they loved him. >> reporter: wishing they can see him one last time. >> i want him to know that i loved him.

>> reporter: the sheriff says he wants to make sure everything is perfect before releasing information about this investigation. the family, the people that live here, the more time that goes by, the more suspicious they become. once that video is released, they plan to stay out here depending on what's on it until they get accountability and justice, erin. >> diane, thank you so much. out front now, city manager for elizabeth city. thank you, for the time this evening. the governor, roy cooper, just called for the video to make public. nobody's cam videos have been released. do you this i it is acceptable? >> i don't. you know i am trying to trust the process as. as an attorney myself, i want to

believe in the process and it happens in the heels of three guilty verdicts for derek chauvin. i hope for the best and i want to believe in the process. i want to trust that they make good decisions out there. my focus is to keep the citizens vsh safe and create an environment for them to exercise their first amendment rights and provide police protection while they do so. >> just listening to you, it sounds like you are not necessarily convinced that you can trust this process. >> i am an african-american male and initially it felt like yet another one, right? and so i am married to a

district court judge so we talk about these things all the time. what i am hoping is that the slow speed of the process will equal accuracy. i said when i first spoke about this matter was that i was not concerned of the speed but i am extremely concerned in watching the accuracy. so i have been asking the cit citizens of elizabeth city, i am so proud of them. how they have brought awareness to the situation but they have been extremely careful not to create any distractions. distraction takes away the matter at hands. i believe in them and trust them. >> how long is too long though? for a lot of folks they say get before the judge.

why hasn' t someone get in front seat of the judge. he has three days to answer or not respond. and at that point we could procedural petition at court. >> this sounds like it will not happen any time soon. >> we are at 7:20 on a friday, so we will not nothing will happen until monday. if you do the math we'll go into a long time without answers. >> protests have been peaceful thankfully. look around the country, the

longer this goes on and the public gets a feeling they are not getting transparency and as diane gallagher says the family is going to be more suspicious the longer this goes on. we see this again and again, the longer it goes on and people are not being transparent. are you worry this is going to turn? >> i am extremely worried. we got intel from some of the protesters that they'll continue to protest until they get answers. and so my daddy says you can only sing and dance for so long before you have to perform. what i need is a really good perfo performance. >> we know seven deputies have been placed on leave and two

other deputies have resigned and one retired after this. what does that tell you? >> i don't want to make speculations but i would love to know why they resign, why the one retired and i can't speculate the seven on leave is a protocol that happens when these types of things take place while the investigation is going on. >> is this suspicious to you that three others were not involved have now left. >> someone has seen something. that does not match the training law enforcement foresees. those officers will try to do it right every single day. >> you got a lot in your hands and you got tenuous days ahead. thank you for coming on. >> the pleasure is mine. thank you for having me.

advocating for medical marijuana and federal levels seeking to loosen laws that regulate the drugs. he has associates to over lap within the industry. a florida doctor found a medical marijuana advocacy group accompanied gaetz on that 2018 trip to the bahamas. the pair repeatedly intersected over medical marijuana. gaetz introduced medical marijuana legislation two weeks after vacationing with that doctor in the florida keys. one week after, that doctor launched a medical marijuana company.

breaking news, as we discussed the cdc and fda lifting the pause of johnson & johnson's coronavirus vaccine but will come with a warning for women under 50. dr. jonathan reiner is with us. what do you think of this decision? >> i think it's the right decision. the j&j vaccine is a really effective vaccine, and it has a lot of benefits compared to the two mrna vaccines. it really easy to transport. it can remain in a refrigerator without deep freeze for months at a time and it's only a single shot so it really amplifies our

ability to get vaccines into arms. the risk of thrombosis is low. the committee found 15 cases out of 8 million shots, that's about two shots -- two cases of thrombosis per million shots. so it's very, very safe. just to put this in prospective, the risk of thrombosis from covid-19 itself is about 16%. so many orders of magnitude are more likely to get a clot from the virus itself than from the vaccine. i think they made the right decision and adding a caution in the label allows providers to discuss this in detail with patients. >> absolutely. on the overall vaccine effort, doctor, republican senator ron johnson is sticking with his neck out once again questioning the public health push for

everyone to get vaccinated. >> from my standpoint, because it's not a fully proved vaccine, i think we probably should have limited the distribution to the vulnerable, to people that really aren't -- to the very young, i see no reason to be pushing vaccines on people. >> johnson is a republican. we novak seen he issitancy is a real problem among republicans. he isn't an expert but is he doing damage? >> he is doing damage. look, i don't understand what senator johnson doesn't understand about vaccines. we vaccinate people not just to reduce illness among the most vulnerable but reduce illness in the population and to prevent this virus from spreading, to prevenldt the virus from mutati
