nations including nepal are restricting travel from india. india, brazil and south africa and commercial flights starting monday. nepal is feeling the impact next door. joining me from hong kong with more on how regional neighbors are concerned about the domino effect of what we're seeing in india. >> it is a domino effect. outbreak worsens in india, infections are rising across asia, especially in make nepal, 7,137 new cases of covid-19, highest daily rise so far, situation getting increasingly difficult. statement from the ministry of help. as number of infections has increased i don't understand the control of the health system it's tough to provide hospital

will be multilateralism is back. but is it that easy? >> certainly nort. and you've seen that already. first 100 days, i think it was incumbent on the administration to say we're listening to you, we want to hear your ideas. we're supporting nato, so forth. now they're into harder issues of how you actually manage some of these relationships. as you've seen even in the first 100 days, there are significant differences. united states is steadfastly against the gas pipeline running out of russia, route around ukraine. germans for example are still pushing for that. we have seen a reluctance in europe to take a hard line on china. in part because of the trade implications. so we're back -- good news is we're back to the more normal

differences than you would expect to see between the united states and its european allies. >> there's been talk about china. mr. blinken has given interview on american television where he said china is acting more repressively at home, more aggressively outside. we all know that. also said they want to overturn the rules based order. question is what does biden's foreign policy team plan to do about that? and how does he have conversations with g-7 about the issues he considers pressing? >> it's interesting, phraseology you mentioned you heard from president biden himself in message to congress a few nights ago, marking his 100th day. they have not yet put together their full range china policy. i don't think we're going to see that until the summer, but some

elements are already clear. while there is a lot more tension and some things that resemble the old cold war, this is primarily a battle about technological supremacy, not one as much of the kind of military confrontation that dominated the cold war with russia after world war ii. that means trying to understand how the united states and europe would cooperate on technology, starting with 5g, moving on to artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and so forth. all areas where they're concerned about chinese domination of networks. because who controls the network is probably more important in the next couple of years than who controls the sea lanes of commerce we've traditionally worried about. then there's question of how hard you push the chinese on

diego in california. authorities say there were about 30 people on board when the vessel crashed against the reef and capsized on sunday. most people made it to shore, six rescued, nearly two dozen taken to the hospital. life guard lieutenant spoke to cnn about the chaos at site of the accident. >> i was one of the first responders on scene, and it was a big mess along the coastline. people actively drowning, getting pulled out by rip currents, people on the base of the shoreline there, not -- whether bystanders doing cpr down below. >> u.s. customs and border patrol say they've been beefing up patrol operations after recent increase in maritime smuggling attempts. >> we're putting more resources

offering a fourth or fifth of what he has proposed, that will be a no go for him. the president said he will host republicans here at the white house at some point. the question is what give and take will both sides be willing to offer as they try to seek a deal on the infrastructure plans. let's discuss more with the director o f a bipartisan deal a all? >> well, i think it has been a more ambitious agenda.

one is the aggressive wing of the democratic party becoming more empowered and the other where biden's public opinion is trending. 55% of americans think the government should do more to solve the country's problem. but the real question is can it get passed. i think it will be a seriously uphill battle. i think that any bill that we ultimately get will be the result of compromise. and in the end, joe biden really can't go any further to the left than the most moderate member of the senate, joe manchin. i think that there is a desire for bipartisan compromise here. but anything that we get will be much less in terms of the price tag and the types of provisions that it includes. >> and then also, and this is a reason for it. we have seen more and more division in the republican party, the push and pull between what is trump's base and congressional leaders. and it is not just about mitt

romney getting booed. take a listen to these. >> i was appalled. mitt romney is an outstanding senator who serves his state and senate as well. we republicans need to remember that we are united by fundamental principles such as a belief in personal responsibility, free markets, a strong national defense. those are the principles that unite us. we are not a party that is led by just one person. >> you can only be a republican if. the ultimate extension of that it ends up being a one-person party. >> there are more of those people today than there were. >> i hope not. >> even that or they are louder. >> yeah. >> they were talking about starting a caucus. >> yeah, well, you know it is --

yeah, to me that is basically says that we want to be extinct. >> what do you make about those comments? >> robin, both republicans and democrats right now suffer from fractures in their own party but the level of vitriol in the g.o.p. rises to a different level. the unwelcomed reception mitt romney received is just one case in point. seeing someone like that as was just pointed out, a republican that spent his whole life advocating on behalf of conservative causes get booed by the g.o.p. is embarrassing to the party. i think all of the comments they just showed really reveal the extent to which the g.o.p. suffers from the pro-trump wing and the wing that is much more moderate. at the same time in washington, i think some of the tensions within the republican party will at least to an extent be

concealed by a fairly united front against biden's agenda. republicans may disagree on a lot. they certainly disagree about the direction that the future party should go. especially in the senate right now, mitch mcconnell continues to be extremely effective at whipping votes and ensuring solidarity in opposition to democrat endorsed legislation. so most of the fights are going to continue on into 2022 and likely into 2024. i still think that we will see fairly opposition by republicans to the democratic agenda as it is currently constituted. >> i want to keep talking about this, thomas. what is your assessment of the arizona election ordered. it has been called ludicrous. politically it seems to be expedient. four republicans to say mr. trump lost the election. why does the big lie still hold political benefit? >> that is a great question, robin. the arizona audit is extremely

alarming because it continues to breathe oxygen into the false narrative that the 2020 election results can't be trusted. there is nothing of principle wrong conducting an election audit. but in arizona there was zero evidence of fraud or vote rigging and it is purely designed to score political points with the base. auditors are declining to confirm the process will be overseen by bipartisan representatives, reporters were initially obstructed from reporting the audit. this is not about identifying the truth or ensuring electoral integrity it is just cling to trump's big lie. republicans may think the audit as a resonance with the base, there is a fundamental danger that under lies it and efforts like this i think will continue to subvert public trust in voting which will have big implications for trust in u.s. democracy. >> thomas, always good to speak to you.
