tonight, an extremely disappointing jobs report for april, showing 366,000 jobs were added to the economy. the prediction was 1 million. that's a massive, massive miss. the unemployment rate went up to 6.1%. president biden saying it is crucial for lawmakers to support his $4 trillion in additional spending. >> we knew this would not be a sprint but a marathon. today's report just underscores in my view how vitally our actions are. our efforts are starting to work. the climb is steep and we still have a long way to go. >> phil mattingly is "outfront" ti tonight at the white house. that's a huge miss.

you and i have cover these stories all the time and never seen this huge miss. >> reporter: there are two pieces of this. economic side, everybody from janet yellen on down the administration are stunned by the actual miss here and how big it was. that moves to just confusion once they start digging into the report. erin, when you dig into this report, there is no line explaining what exactly happened here. you got numbers signaling a tightening labor market but you got wage growth and participation rates are up and certain sectors are doing significantly better and others are dropping off. it is just a convergence of information here that makes clear one thing. there is no road map for this, coming out of the pandemic. what else do officials know?

this is going to fuel republican arguments and one of the key elements of their rescue plan. the $300 of unemployment benefits. the white house has no desire to change it any time soon. the desire they are hearing they are having difficult times finding employees jobs. one of the argues we have been hearing a lot not just from republicans but the scale of what president biden has put on the table is only going to serve some type of inflation cycle. this as you heard the president referenced in that sound, they say that's not the case. there is still a long way to go. the bottom line here if there is any take away at all from this report, it is one report. we have to see what it is going to mean in the months ahead. the administration is not changing direction asset all. they plan to pursue those $4 trillion plan. we go big on the table and we still plan to go big, erin.

tonight a federal grand jury indicting derek chauvin and three other former police officers for civil rights violations resulting in george floyd's death. chauvin charged of unreasonable force by police officer and he's charged with a separate indictment in the 2016 incident of his arrest on a 14-years-old including putting his knee on the teen's neck and handcuffed when he was not resisting. congresswoman, i appreciate your time.
