aspect to the events. >> and i could not help but go back to what it was like for black military members. some lynched for having the audacity is to have them, to remind you that racism is just under the surface if not on top of it in our country. the knee jerk reaction to racism was he was spresponding to the g lie. someone came in and said, no one voted for joe biden, we want to stop the steal and he addressed politics and he said, i voted for joe biden, am i nobody. and the knee jerk reaction was to attack him in that way and call him that repeatedly. he talked about that, not only being the siofficer under attac and being a black sister.

the reaction of the black lives matter protest and the reaction of the killing of george floyd and how the failure of this committee to address that was used as a pretextual reason for republicans to not support a bipartisan endeavor. you see it as a way it's being used to as a scapegoat to take away the responsibility of republicans to dress this. >> phil, to you, i want to get to officer daniel hodges, and he was asked why he addressed the attack as a white -- he said the attack was overwhelmingly white males. then he said this. >> they didn't say anything especially xenophobic to merks but to my black colleagues and anyone who is not white and they would some of them would try to, try to recruit me, one of them came up to me and said, are you my brother? >> what does that say? that these rioters, these

insurrectionists, overwhelmingly white males tried to recruit him for the insurrection? >> how much pain do you want? let me tell you as a white guy. this country went through saying the italians were not welcome because they were catholics. they had laws get chinese immigration 120 years ago. we inturned asian people, and we told gay people they were not allowed to marry and women were not allowed to vote. if we think this does not represent america, it's not that america is not great, we have to look in the mirror and say, unless we look higher including looking to the political leadership to say, take us higher, this is who we will be, this is not unique. we have told people, if you are not like me, you are worse. that is where we will go, if we don't go higher. >> this is who we are.

what the dorj .o.j. would have assert, is why it's a significant thing, remember, you are saying, in order to have transparency and a full investigation, i have to premove the hurdles and people saying i don't care what uyou want to hear, i don't have to tell you. that hurdle is being over come, saying you can speak freely about what it is that you know about the es. if you know the who, what, when, where, why, the paper trail, if you know something different than what your oath of office should have been or otherwise, lets us know. it's a level of transparency that we need here. >> give me a break. the d.o.j. has to tell you that you can go and tell the truth about the most significant event we have had in the government in 200 years. if they said, can you not speak. if you are in the federal

government, i spent 25 years there, i would have said no, you are going to testify where a committee and somebody is going to say, sorry, that was executive privilege, you are going to jail. speak what ever the department of justice said. no one is going to arrest you, don. >> thank you both. the testimony today's select committee hearing is gut wrenching. the officers detailing the brutal attacks at the capitol. and it seems like a lot of republicans just don't care. they are still down playing or denying the horrors of january 6. but the two respect-- but the two republicans on the committee are calling out their own here is liz cheney. >> everyone here, voted for and would have preferred that the matters be investigated by a nonpartisan commission. interest modeled on the 9/11 commission.

although such leadership was opposed, it passed with the support of 35 republican members and was defeated by republicans in the senate. and that leaves us where we are today. we cannot leave the violence of january 6 and its causes uninvestigated. the american people deserve the full and open testimony of every person with knowledge of the planning and preparation for january 6th. we must know what happened here at the capitol. and we must also know what happened every minute of that day in the white house. every phone call, every conversation, every meeting leading up to, during and after the attack. honorable men and women have an obligation to step forward. one republican, for example, said, quote wh, what is happeni is unacceptable and unamerican. those participating in lawlessesness and violence must be arrested and prosecuted to

the fullest extent of the law. no member of congress should now attempt to defend the indefensible. obstruct this investigation or whitewash what happened that day. we must act with honor and duty and in the interest of our nation. america is great. because we preserve our democratic institutions at all costs. until january 6 we were prove positive for the world that a nation conceived in liberty could long endure. but now january 6th threatens our most sacred legacy. the question for everyone of us who serve ises in congress and for every elected official across this great nation, indeed, for every american is this. will we adhere to the rule of law? will we respect the rulings of our court? will we preserve the peaceful

transition of power? or will we be so blinded bipartisan ship that we throw away the miracle of america? do we hate our political adversaries more than we love our country and revere our constitution. i pray that is not the case. i pray that we all remember our children are watching. as we carry out this solemn and sacred duty entrusted to us. our children will know who stood for truth. and they will inherit the nation we hand to them. a republic if we can keep it. and here is congressman adam k kinsinger. >> i did not think today would be as emotional as it has been. i have talked to a number of you and gotten to know you. i think it's important to tell you right now though, you guys may like individually feel a little broken. you guys all talked about the

disservice to the officers in their families, to the staff and the employees on the capitol complex, to the american people who deserve the truth, and to those generations before us who went toer war to defend self governance. because self governance is at stake. and it's why i agreed to serve on the committee. i want to know what happened that day, but more importantly i want all americans to be able to do trust the work this committee does and get the facts out there free of conspiracy. this cannot continue to be a partisan fight. i'm a republican. i'm a conservative. but in order to heal from the damage caused that day, we need to call out the facts. it's time to stop the outrage and conspiracies that fuel the violence and division in the country and most importantly we need to reject those that promote it. as a country, it's time to learn from our past mistakes. rebuild stronger so this never happens again, and then we can

i felt pride, i felt grateful and i felt anger. i felt anger that we have come to this point in our lives. in this country's life. before you had two guests that were very powerful in their statements. but i go back to senator moynahan years ago, he commented about the a little bit issue burning the -- but the british burning the capitol, he said they can burn the capitol but not destroy the idea of democracy. what took place on january 6th was an attempt to destroy the idea of democracy and we are that close to allowing it to be destroyed if we follow the path of said, saying we now the republicans are part of the cancel culture. we want to cancel what happened on january 6th, we don't want to think about it, talk about it, be reminded of it or get at the truth. >> i was having a conversation with my colleague, were you

my second olympics. and at the time, i did it in a preliminary, and i had to carry the scores all the way through the end. now, when you qualify, you start from zero. so, you have a new life. so, yeah, that is a lot of pressure because you want to do your best, but i think it's important to remind yourself that you want to do the best you can for yourself. and not the best for everyone else to expect you to do something that it's more than you can deliver. so, you have to be sure that you keep the piece separate. >> yeah. >> and bart, look, gymnastics is a dangerous sport. initially some people thought simone was being selfish to do it to the team. but if her head was not tin the right place, and she'd not perform at her best, did she do the right thing. she said i didn't want to hurt the other girls. i don't know, i'm not an olympic

a athlete, it seems big to say, i don't want to screw them up, i'm going to take myself out. >> she did exactly the right thing. and hats off to the team, they stepped up under enormous pressure to win the silver medal. that was amazing and hats off to simone for acknowledging that she was in trouble. i know this is not an uncommon problem in gymnastics. we call it the twisties. where you get disoriented in the air and it's terrifying when you don't know which way is up and which way is down. and you think of the complicated skills that simone does, even her vaults. she does three difference types of vaults and they are all different in terms of techniques. and so, if you get disoriented and you are doubting yourself, it's scary and now, she is launching herself ten to 12 feet in the air. flipping and twisting and has no idea where she is? and i had that experience.

we call it the twisties and it happened even at the end of my career and it's terrifying. like my palms are sweaty just thinking about it now. it's scary when you are flying through the air and you have no idea where you are. >> and i feel for her , i think, she did the right thing. and it was probably the best thing for the u.s. teemp as well. scary stuff. >> nadia, twen2018, revealed th she is one of the -- you know, she was the base, the face of the games. and pits really hard to do everything. because i was thinking that you know, gymnastics and everything
