live from cnn headquarters, live for those watching here in canada, united states and around the world, i'm kim brunhuber. this is "cnn newsroom." ♪ we begin with an encouraging sign of progress in the u.s. vaccination campaign against the coronavirus. half of all americans are now fully vaccinated, according to data released friday, despite that, the number of new cases keeps growing. now topping 100,000 per day. and in florida, the delta variant is spreading at unprecedented speed. we're talking about 20,000 new cases per day on average. florida had more than 134,000 new cases total over the past week. the highest number since the pandemic began. but the white house is making it clear, the nation isn't headed for another lockdown. nick valencia has the latest on

vaccination efforts across the country. >> reporter: a major milestone for the country, with half the total u.s. population fully vaccinated. but the grim count of covid deaths is rising fast. a 52% increase over last week's seven-day average. florida reported more covid-19 cases over the past week, than any other seven-day period during the pandemic. data published friday by the state health department reported 134506 new covid-19 cases over the past week for the average of 19,215 cases each day. unvaccinated virginia man reminded people to get the shot before it's too late. >> -- so far that i made the mistake to be make which is not to get vaccinated. i can do better as a parent, as a human. and i hope to god everybody else

chief of the critical care medicine at seattle children's hospital and also an associate at washington school of medicine. doctor, thank you for joining us. earlier this week, the american academy of pediatrics reported that covid cases among american children and teens jumped 84% in a week. what are you seeing right now at your hospital? >> we certainly are seeing an increase in the number of children being hospitalized with covid, and particularly with more severe covid-19 infection. >> and these who are hospitalized principally, people who haven't been vaccinated, is that right? >> yes. we're seeing teens who are not vaccinated and younger children who are largely from families, in which the other eligible family members aren't vaccinated. >> yeah. you know, in terms ofñrlp the m

and you're looking at now the third largest fire in california history. it has ranked upok there. incredible to see. it won't be long before it tejjt)jz fire of last year. the dixie fire is only 21% contained. so firefighters have a long way to help quell the fire because it has such an erratic nature. but as kim mentioned, that's incredible, because it'se@'urnig the size of 130 central parks in thaerd-time. what will the wind do? the wind is forecast to strengthen through the weekend. or roughly 15 to 20 miles per hour. of course, if that takes the smokeñi and drifts it well away from the point of the fire, several hundred miles, in fact, we're talking about air quality alerts in place for much of wyoming, idaho, including the entire state of colorado.

we're following protests in bangkok. police are facing off over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic. we're seeing exchanges between protesters and police. protesters throwing objects at police and police firing tear gas at demonstrators. demonstrators sometimes throwing those canisters back at police. this was all prompted by the government's handling of the pandemic. the group organizing the protests spelled out its demands on facebook and it wants the prime minister to resign and for cuts to be made in the defense and monarchy budgets and that money to be used to tackle covid-19 instead. last week has seen daily cases and deaths. only 6% of the country has been fully vaccinated. we'll stay on top of this story as it develops. for the fourth day in a row,

tokyo has reported more than 4,000 new coronavirus infections with more than 4500 new cases saturday. the city's under a state of emergency until august 31st. and it is nearly 7 p.m. in tokyo on the final day of the olympic games. we're going to take a look at all the exciting action that's happening. cnn sports coy wire joins me from tokyo. the u.s. men's basketball team picking up another gold but it was no lay-up for them. >> reporter: no, that's right. they turned it into a slam dunk though, kim. u.s. lost their first olympic game in 17 years to france to begin play here in tokyo leaving some question whether or not they'd be able to get the fourth straight gold medal. kevin durant and company, they were able to overcome diversity and gel as a team earning sweet revenge in the gold medal game. durant was a star scoring 29 points tying him for carmelo anthony.

>> all right. now imagine winning an olympic medal for something you've done three times before in your life. that's what american molly seidel did. she took home a bronze behind a pair of kenyan runners. seidel was baby-sitting and working in a coffee shop last year but she never gave up. now she's gone the distance and is bringing home a bronze medal. the great allyson felix cementing her status in the history books. she took bronze in the women's 400 meter. she's the most decorated female track athlete. this is her fifth olympics, her first as a mom. the jamaican women putting an exclamation point on olympic sprinting. they finished with a time of 41.02 seconds, the second fastest time in history, kim. we had exclusive interview with them, kim.
