qanon conspiracy theorists pushed this the day he would be president again. you may trump himself in june said he expected to be reinstated by august. and there are others. >> donald trump will be back in office in august. >> he's coming back interest he can come back as soon as -- >> before the middle of august. >> so august 13th to the other dates that were supposed to mark trump's come back, january 20th day, trump would be sailing in. march 4th which came and went with nothing. here we are again. thanks so much for joining us. at 360 starts now. good evening, we begin with breaking news, a new terrorism bulletin from the department of homeland security. it highlights the potential for violence surrounding the upcoming 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. what seems to distinguish it, though, from similar alerts in the past, it draws on domestic

factors, quoting the intelligence chief, quote, you have to pay attention to that we are see figure front of our face. so what is he talking about when he says they are seeing what is if front of their face? >> anderson, there are a number of factors addressed in this dhs bulletin. the way they look at these potential terrorists is in two camps, first, people who could be radicalized by foreign fwrums like a groups like al qaeda. people who are motivated by racial extremism, by an anti-government sentiment. in that first group, that's from dhs is worried there could be atacks, violence, in the leadup and around the 9/11 anniversary. so they are looking at that closely. they do note al qaeda for the first time in four years put out their english language magazine

inspire. i understand in that second group, the more domestic violence extremists, they note the pandemic has worsened things and things like mask mandate, covid restrictions could fuel people to carry out different kind of attacks. they note there are a number of religious holidays coming up. those could also be targets. i want to read you a part of this bulletin that came out. it says the reopening of schools as well as several dates of significance over the next few months could also provide increased targets of opportunity for vie license. now, anderson, they don't mention this. of course, there are a number of jewish holidays coming up in the month of september. they do caution, though, there is no specific threat they know about. nothing imminent. >> nothing current. that's good. the intelligence chief john cohen, he had his own set. >> he is saying the extremist forums, the rhetoric they are hear secretary similar, if not

strikingly similar to what they heard to the leadup to the insurrection on january. they say they are saying things like take action into your own hands, bring out the gal lows. that is not idle chatter. we saw people walking through saying happening mike pence and gam lows on national mall. cohen went on oto say there is one strong thread that runs throughout this. this is the false belief, the big lie, that president trump actually won the election. that he says has helped fuel the potential for violence. it's not just the things they are hearing. he says there is an upstick. we heard from secretary mayorkas. he said they are seeing violence

extremism born from false ideologies of hate. so what they are seeing is, they say, is very dangerous and could lead to real world deadly violence. >> i appreciate it. joining us congressman adam kinzinger on the 6th of january. i appreciate you being with us. as someone who is investigating the insurrection and in hopes of preventing this from ever happening again. are you concerned by these reports from dhs and others? >> yes. it's concerning because on january 5th, we never imagined that january 6th the level of dead would happen although a lot of us predicted violence up to that day. that's the if you floor now. so when you look at online rhetoric and chatter that's happening and you look at maybe 100 people post and say comments like bring out the gal lows, even if only two of those out of 100 are serious. that leads to violence. i think what the biggest concern is, is all this talk about

people trying to sound tough on the internet. but that end up kind of feeding itself and particularly when people start brain washing folks with the election was stolen. look at what all these patriotic people did in the 1,700s, this is the same thing. the mask mandate is based on the equivalent of not allowing you, 1776, taxation without representation. ultimately, that does grow into action. it's a real concern. >> the intelligence chief says it's leaked to conspiracy narratives, false narrativings, so many people in the republican party including the former president are pushing the big lie and these conspiracy theories. the president of the united states still pushing this stuff it does make it all the more concerning, it gives it a legitimacy it otherwise would not have. >> it absolutely does, in the past when you hear in the '90s it was the u.n. black helicopters, you always have

areas of conspiracies, they were never given oxygen by people in authority. if they tone directly say, obviously, the former president constantly says the election was stolen. if he doesn't parrot what qanon has been saying, there is winkles or nods or disavowing of. that that is when somebody with authority speaks conspiracy or when somebody with authority speaks that dark part in everybody's heart that we always have to fight against, the desire to hate, the desire to divide, it gives per mission to let that overtake you. we can't be surprised when this happens to a large scale like we saw an january 6th and we are concerned about in the future. >> i want to talk about afghanistan, the situation, obviously, more dire by the day. for anybody who thought the current president said in july, i'm paraphrasing, the whole country was going to fall

quickly. it is falling very fast. kabul is still holding and someone who served there with the air force, what do you think of what is going on and what the implications of it are? >> well, it's choirly foreseeable. it's entirely tragic. i get that now people are talking the polls that american spooem people support the exit. the american people supported the exit from iraq until isis rose up and the american people strongly supported the intervention against isis. leadership, especially at this level is about leading, particularly on foreign policy issues. i didn't see a lot of americans on the street demanding the exit from afghanistan. if you asked, they would say, yeah, we should leave. but we have gotten to a point where a mere 2500 u.s. troops were stiffening the air support, logistics support. we have freight allies in europe incapable of providing air

support. that's a minimal thing to stiffen the spine. this was entirely foreseeable. judging the decision to leave, which i think is a disastrous decision, we have nothing in place and have nothing in place for the evacuation of the 30,000 afghan residents who put their life on the line, who were promised a visa if they worked with us as translators and people with those kind of things and this they are stuck in afghanistan now. how are you going to evacuate them when all the major supply routes, when all of the area is controlled by the taliban now. it's a tagragedy and a tragedy entirely preventible. >> we will see more areas where bases are taken over by the taliban where rows and rows of armored hum-vees. i saw some drones out there that have been now taken. things that were left heaped or i guess for the national after

fan army. i don't know because the u.s. pulled out so quickly or they thought the army could hold and they should have this equipment. but you now have and we have seen this play out so many times in the past in different, over different decades and it's playing out again and as you said, we have seen this before. >> well, yeah. i think, first off that equipment 23 can get a beat on from the air, we should destroy. keep in find we have no observes on the ground. it's hard to know accurate will what you are targeting. secondally, again, if you are u.s. ground forces and you are fighting in a battle, we desire, demand and need air support around artillery support. we need communications and logistics and the ability to call for pedmedevac. we pulled all that out. that was the linchpin and the afghan became more capable and

required u.s. contractors to keep the planes flying. they were the first to leave. now to expect the afghan army that had been fighting, the casualties were by the afghan army we were fighting. we basically made the decision, we're out of here. we surprised the afghans, we defied ourselves. i think it's not unforeseeable to see their break. >> the paed there and obviously -- ambassador there and obviously said not just this administration, the priored a men strikes 45dz direct negotiations with the taliban and agreed to not have the afghan government take part in those negotiation, essentially, pushing them to the side, delegitimizing them, which crocker believed caused a huge kind of body blow to support for the government among afghan national forces.

it kind of took the wind out of their sails. i am wondering if you think there is truth in that. i don't understand an explanation for an army that has more weapons, has more personnel, has had 20 years of training from u.s. force and is not fighting. >> yeah, afghan special forces are extremely capable and they're really good. you are kind of rank and file a&a. they're fighting with largestic support and air support and know you have the intelligence, what is attacking you? maybe it's another ama thing that thinks you are a taliban the ability to decon flict that is important. the ambassador is right. so up to date the prior administration, there was obviously a desperate desire to negotiate with the taliban. that was mistake number one. if you show that desperation, they will take you for everything you work. they didn't want to negotiate with the afghan government,

instead of us pushing that point, we see that, we will do a negotiation with you in hopes that when we withdraw, you will negotiate with the government of afghanistan. the taliban said, that's great. we'll do that they knew we were desperate to leave. i blame the prior administration. i blame thissed a my opinion strikes for this thoemt e moment we're in. it's sad sad. i'm not throwing political darts. you will see people throw political darts for the next election. i think this is about something bigger, which is america's role in the world, particularly america's honor and what happens in the next conflict when the 30,000 people we just abandoned in afghanistan that we promised a ticket to the united states, what happens when we have to fight in a different place, are they going to believe us? >> in terms of the thousands of afghans and drivers and everything nears, we have new reporting tonight that the biden

administration is working with qatar to temporarily house thousands of afghans and their families fleeing, that's familiar with a source familiar with ongoing discussions. i wonder what your reaction is to that and it does seem last minute and after the fact. it seems like this was not -- i mean, this has been an issue going on now for years and it was an issue in iraq as well. >> yeah, look, ever sense i have been elected to congress. i'm in my 11th year now. i have been dealing with this issue in iraq and with afghanistan. these special visas. you have a slower bureaucracy, people who are afraid to sign on that final line. we have been fighting that bureaucratic duress. so when the decision was made to withdraw, certainly before that annoyancement was made, which was made by the way of the beginning of the fighting season. if they had delayed to the end

of the fighting system, you would have bought a lot of distance to come to terms with that regardless, that's when they should have been preparing this evac weight plan. so it's great the qatar option is possibly there. the administration need to lean forward as hard as they can. but there is a lot of afghans that basically fought with us, that are going to die and have died already. because of lack of planning and it's sad, but you know, again, it's kind of the starfish in the sea thing, let's save as many as we k. it makes a difference. it will not lessen the stay on us now. >> i quickly want to go to the january 6th committee in terms of the time line. when do you think you can be issued for subpoenas, how has it been decided? >> well, i'll tell you this much, we don't want to reveal that strategy or tactic. we are moving forward with quick speed. we want to make sure we get thorough information. we don't want to drag this out. but we also don't want to rush it unnecessarily.

. before the break we spoke of rapid deterioration on the ground in afghanistan. we are told places have already fallen to the taliban. national correspondent clarissa ward got access where they were once strong and the tale ban rules. >> reporter: this is what remains in the preps of

afghanistan. the hollowed-out skeletons of military bases now under control of the taliban. once there were hundreds of u.s. and nato troops in dghazni province. the last americans left a couple years ago, but their memory still lurks ghost-like. it's so strange toll see this. you know. the taliban granted access to cnn along with akward-winning film maker keen to show off the spoils of war. so we're just arriving at another u.s. base. already i can see a large number of military vehicles over there. according to taliban, afghan forces here surrendered three weeks ago when their food ran out, leaving weapons and ammunition and more. when the americans were here, were you and your men attacking this base a lot in. >> yes.

many times we attacked this space when america was here. we did operations. we were using ieds. the americans had their helicopters, weapons and tanks on the ground. we resisted very well. >> reporter: now they roam through the tactical center. anything of value will be stripped down and sold. walking through what's left of these american bases, you have to ask yourself, what was it all for? america's great experiment with nation building now vanished into dust. >> it's our believe that one day we will have victory and islamic law will nottiot just to afghanistan but all of the world. we are not in a hurry. ja you had will not end until the last day. >> reporter: it's a chilling admission from a group that

claims it wants peace, despite continuing a bloody offensive. since the u.s. began its withdrawal in may, the militants have advanced across the country at an alarming rate, off the back of american pickup trucks. on the ghazni highway, we pass base after base all flying the mill tant's flag. at the end, it's a similar sight. the days of underground insurgency are over and the taliban is poised to reestablish the very emirate america once came to destroy. the taliban governor insists the group has changed since then. >> the difference is between that taliban and the taliban is that the taliban of 2001 were new. and now this taliban is experienced, disciplined. our activities are going well. we are obeying our leaders. >> a lot of people are concerned

that if the tell ban takes power again women's rights will move backwards. how can you guarantee that womens rights will be protected? >> we assure this to people all over the world. especially the people eve afghanistan. ishroom has given rights equally. people have their rights. they have given rights to women. we will give them that much. >> that is clearly opened for interpretation. next to the mosque, we find a class roovp of young girls, but their teachers say they will not attend regular school. at night, i am separated from my male colleagues and sleep in the woman's part of the house with the children. >> i have been talking tosome of the women in this room and i prom etc.ed that i wouldn't show any of their faces, but it's interesting because the taliban

talks about how it's changed and people can go to school and i asked if leeds girls go to school. they said, absolutely not. when i asked why? they say the taliban says it's bad. here what the taliban says goes. this is now what afghanistan's future looks like. far from what the u.s. once envisioned and what so many afghans dreamed of. as the taliban pushes on towards an all but certain victory. >> at the beginning of the piece, we saw names on the one wall. what can you tell us about that in. >> so we actually went and found these people, these soldiers who serves and they were very surprised to hear from us when they saw picture of the murals now in the hand of the taliban, they are based in the hand of the taliban. one of them told us, pause we

wanted to fet their perspective how it felt, all that sacrifice, all that fighting, soldiers lost. and one of them said something that really stuck with me, anderson, he said, you know, when you start out in the military, you think everything you are doing is right and it's all for a just cause. he said but now i look back on it and obviously hindsight is 2020. i see it's all for nothing. what was the point? what an unbelievable waste? that stayed with me. another service person that didn't serve at this specific base said something similar by striking. he says all of us saw it coming but it doesn't make it any less disappointing. >> clarissa ward, thank you. incredible to see those images. up next, what today's decision allow people to get a third covid shot might mean to you or someone you love. that special is next.

therapy. people with auto that you immean systems to tamp down their immune system. it is on the honor system. there is no preparation that will be necessary. you don't have to show up with an anti-body test to show that your anti-bodies are low. they recommend you don't do that. so it will be more of a people generally know they're immunocompromised. it's a conversation they have with their doctors. they will be recommend this third shot. why they did it was as you said in the only did they have evidence of lower immunity. they're also getting sick. people who are vaccinated and immunocompromised were 500 times for likely to end up hospitalize versus the general population who is vaccinated. so it's really a combination of things. >> it is the honor system as san delay was saying. people don't have to prove it. so prrks is it just doctors or

can people go to local pharmacies and just say that they're immunocompromised and get a third dose? >> right now, i've heard from a family member and a couple colleagues who said they actually went to the pharmacy today, the pharmacist or the clinic and told they were not authorized to give the third immunization yet. so that information from the cdc was not translated down to the pharmacy chains and clinics. maybe that will happen by the weekend orpy monday. but you know i think what we will see this is the beginning. i think it's going to broaden of time, we've seen information from the mayo clinic this month we are seeing a decline in the ability of more of the pfizer vaccine than moderna as to protect against hospitalation iss, the hospitalizations are

not going up and we're seeing with israel down to 50, 40% protection against infection. the big question will be fought just the tip of the sphere. we'll start seeing hospitalizations among vaccinated individuals as well later on. so i think we will probably see a frad wal broadening of the cri ter why for those who are financial to be eligible for that third immunization. >> sanjay, do you see that as well? people above 60 now to people above 50 and above? >> yeah. i think that's right. ive think it is an important discussion, though. are these post-vaccine infections going to be the metric by which people say, ohio, look, we need to broaden and get the more third shots out or is it going to be serious illness and hospitalizations? i don't know the answer. i think it likely means people will qualify. i this i we have to sort of anticipate even thursday down

the road, if people are getting vaccinated and relatively minor symptoms. they will probably not be recommended third shots and people who fet serious illness, what does that 19? how serious are we talking about? i think it can be vague as we have been reporting on this. >> i want to clarify something pause i think it's confusing. i read about it last night in "the atlantic" in a very good article. just to be clear, if you had been vaccinated, fully vaccinated, correct me if i'm wrong, against the delta variant you are less likely to become infected if you come in onconta with it and do we know how significantly less likely and you are also from what i understand less likely to transmit it to somebody else? is that measurable? do we know how less likely? >> yeah. so with regard to the first question, there is some real data now on this. we were sort of wait fog this

data, likely 8-fold less likely to become infected. it can vary depending on the specific great. >> eightfold, eight times less likely? >> less likely to become infected if you have been vaccine facilitied. you can come back with a positive test. you may not have symptoms, you may, the general, less likely. as far as transmissibility, it was interesting. there was a study saying you could carry roughly the same amount in your nose or mouth whether are you vaccinated or unvags nated but you carry it for a shorter duration of time. you have a smaller window, a shorter window by which you could transmit. yes, you could still carry a lot of virus, but because of that shorter window less transmissible overall. >> that's important. at least for me, it helps me visualize and again reaffirm vaccines are really important for a whole host of reasons, dr. hotez, we learned yesterday,

florida had an all time high for the pandemic. what does that mean for the country and could we surpass the winter surge? it's stunning. >> yeah, no, this is starting to look really ominous in the south where i am. now if you look at rates of transmission in florida and louisiana, they're actually probably the highest in the world. we're running neck and neck with botswana with the rate of transmission. there is a screaming level of transmission across the southern states right now and now we're starting to see this happening among younger age groups. so medium age and some of the hospitals here in the south, there is people in their 30s. we're seeing a lot of pediatriced a missions and icu admissions, the scary part is all of this is happening before schools open. schools are just opening now. i worry that will be an

so before the break, we were talking a record number of covid cases if florida. almost 17,000 more than the previous record which was just one week ago. again a record number for the entire pandemic. but the number that captured the terror of what this latest surge is doing to the state comes from broward county, are governor ron desantis with mask mandates, the teacher says four people associated with the district, including two elementary teachers and assistants have died. so what more do we know about what's going on with these deaths in broward county?

>> reporter: anderson, this all took place in a 24-hour span earlier three educators from the broward county school district as well as a graduate who had close ties to the district, all of this information coming to us from the teacher's union president. she says that the three educators who died were fought vaccinated. it is unclear if the graduate who died was vaccinated. we are learning a little more about those who died. all were women. one was a 48-year-old teacher from pinewood elementary. another a 49-year-old teacher from dillard elementary and a 49-year-old teacher teaching assistant from dillard elementary as well. the union president also tells me that two others are hospitalized, one is a teaching assistant who was vaccinated and ended up in the icu. she was quite sick. i am told she is doing better. also another teacher who is hospitalized, it is unclear if that teacher was vaccinated or not, anderson. >> the four that died, were they vaccinated?

>> well, that's what we're understanding is that the three educators who died were not vaccinated and it's unclear if the graduate who died was vaccinated or not. >> are there others that work in that district that have tested positive in this latest surge? >> reporter: yes, since august 1st, actually, they've had 138 people, employees from that school district from broward who have tested positive. what's really important to note from the union, the teacher's union president is that none of the people who indicted earlier this week got covid at school. the school hadn't reopened yet. they all died before wednesday. teachers first went back on wednesday. students go back wednesday of next week august 18th. so they didn't get it at the school, anderson. >> what's the latest for the mask replacement in broward school district? >> reporter: right now as you know, the governor issued that executive order. he was bank mask mandates in school. broward did put a mask mandate in place, giving parent the only option they could opt out is

through a medical reason or a doctor's note. now the kids will be returning to school and there is an investigation for non-compliance. but they are returning to school next week. there is a mask mandate in place. we are learning there is now an emergency meeting by the state department of education on tuesday next week to decide what to do about broward county and another count why i that's also under investigation for non-compliance because they didn't, they are not following the governor's executive order, anderson. >> we appreciate it. we are joined by a member of the school board, sarah leonardi. i am so sorry for the losses experienced in your district. our hearts go out to the families of those who have died. students don't your honor to classes there until next week. what does this do to the level of concern of the community and what happens moving forward? >> yeah. thank you for having me. you know, these deaths are certainly a tragedy for broward

county schools and for the family and friends of those employees and the graduate. i think this really emphasizes the need to take safety measures like getting vaccinated and wearing masks indoors at all times when in groups of people. i think that is what we are taking home from the. >> i talked to a union representative for teachers. i think it was in florida. i'm not sure exactly where. it was a week or so ago. they're not, they don't support vaccination, mandatory vaccinations for teachers. i assumed there is clearly not mandatory vaccinations for teachers in broward county. is that something the school board or the superintendent could decide to do? or who has the power tore do that in. >> right. i can't speak for the entire border, but that's certainly something i am interested in. we actually heard from the largest teacher's union and they

support mandatory vaccination. >> oh, they do? >> yeah. i just have to say, i support any avenues that get us out of this pandemic as quickly as possible 57d vaccination is one of those avenues. >> for your county, do you know how that -- if -- who would decide that? is that something the governor would decide, the school board would decide? >> i have to look into that. i think it would be the combination of the school board and teacher's union. but i actually don't know if the governor would alloy to us do that. i don't know the legality of that in the state yet. >> the governor signed an executive order banning mask pan dates in schools, which is the broward county voted this week to defy. what message do you have for the governor's the numbers sadly continue to grow? >> you know, he has been a lot of time mocking masks and

our thanks. your rewards. as you have seen tonight, there's the covid surge and along the u.s.-mexico border there's a different spike in migrants illegally crossing the border into the united states. last month u.s. customs and border patrol had the highest

number of people in decades. >> we're facing a serious challenge at our southern boarder. the challenge is made more acute and difficult because of the covid-19 pandemic. >> reporter: a surge in migrant traffic unseen in over two decades. an unprecedented number of m migrants are escaping worsening conditions in their home country. braving the summer heat. global temperatures in july, the hottest on record. last month alone, over 212,000 apprehensions were made along the border during the time of the year when numbers historically drop. the numbers were helped by repeat offenders. 27% of july crossings were made by those who tried and failed to cross in the last year due to a trump era policy that allowed them to be turned away at the border.

pleas not to come to the u.s. not enough to deter those. >> clearly that they will be turned back if they enter the united states illegally and do not have a basis for relief under our laws. >> reporter: customs and border protection managing unprecedented number of unaccompanied children with 19,000 arriving at the border in july. surpassing the record in march when they were flooded with minors who waited over 120 hours in border patrol custody. >> just as we did with the challenge of unaccompanied children in march of this year, we have a plan. we are executing our plan and that takes time. >> reporter: the biden

administration has been careful not to call it a crisis. insisting the real problem is diagnosing the problems they are fleeing. >> the dire circumstances many are fleeing from, that that is a situation we need to spend our time, our effort on and we need to address it if we're going to prevent for of an influx of migrants to come. >> reporter: for some who live along the southern boarder, that is not good enough. >> hire more immigration judges, many asylum officers to process these asylums faster. >> do we know what's causing the surge in craossings and is ther any sign to come? >> reporter: there's always multiple push factors. it seems like a never ending crisis. you see behind me the reality of what's happening here. this large group, one of multiple large groups we have seen in the last hour and more are coming here just off camera.

the biden administration says one of those push factors is deteriorating conditions in the home countries in central america and the anecdotes we're hering on the ground seem to back that up. i interviewed a pair of young mothers. one had a gash and the other not wearing shoes saying they were running from gang violence in their country. when you talk to the border patrol agents, they blame a democratic administration saying the biden administration has taken away the consequences of crossing here illegally. the facilities are worse condition than at the height of zero tolerance policy. title 42 is still in effect which is a public health emergency declaration that allows the agents to expel migrants based on this public health crisis. >> thanks. we'll be right back.
