"outfront" tonight the playbook playing out in california. it boils down to if you lose an

election, you didn't actually lose. it was voter fraud. it was rigged. even when there wasn't and the night before the recall election, the former president is steering the pot with the very familiar message. here he is. does anybody believe the california recall election isn't rigged? millions and millions of mail in ballots will make this another giant election scam? no different but less blatant than the 2020 election scam and came after he actually said this. >> what do you think happens in california? >> well, it's probably rigged. they're sending out all the ballots. the ballots are, you know, mail out, mail in ballots. in fact, i guess you have a case where you can make your own ballot. when that happens, nobody is going to win except these democrats. so, you know, look, they're very good. the one thing they're good at is rigging elections. i predict it's a rigged

election. let's see how it turns out. >> that's completely untrue. it's a bunch of lies. there is really no other word for it and dangerous lies at that. the leading republican contender to replace gavin newsom larry elder is listening closely and sounding more trump on this. listen to this event captured by "the washington post" reporter dave wee gle. >> we have lawyers set up ready to go to file lawsuits. they're going to cheat, we know that. >> they're going to cheat. we know that. no, no, you don't. and then just listen to trump's media loyalists. >> the only thing that will save gavin newsom is voter fraud. >> you really need outside observers to make sure this election isn't stolen. >> what people need to look at is this is going to be an election where they go all out to steal the referendum. >> they're going to cheat to win. the mail in ballot scheme is rigged. >> steal, cheat, rigged. this is all completely false but

the problem is, of course, there are some republicans who are buying what trump and followers are saying. just listen to what some of elder's supporters told us today. >> i heard people say they can cheat on the mail in. >> if people are multi voting, they're printing out extra ballots, i mean, it's just been a lot of, i believe there is a lot of fraud. >> just to be clear here, there was absolutely no talk of the recall being rigged from any of the people, you know, the newt gingrichs, the tucker carlsons, none of them from trump. none of them when they had the initial handling of the pa pandemic. when the poll shifted, republicans went to the baseless claims it would be fraudulent. we're talking about california.

democrats have a 2-1 registration advantage in voting in california. 2-1. democrats hold every single statewide office and in fact, democrats in california have not lost a statewide election in 15 years and joe biden who is in california and will be campaigning with knew some tonight one california with 64% of the vote. okay? so the concept that if elder does not win that it must be voter fraud is frankly ridiculous on the merit and math. trump is still telling his supporters that the 2020 election was rigged. here he is on september 11th, saturday. >> all of a sudden, we have a rigged election. we won the election. >> kyung lah is "outfront" live in long beach, california where president biden is about to appear with governor gavin

newsom. how close ly are voters listenig to this? >> reporter: we can tell you, erin, in the final hours and especially at the rallies when you talk to the voters both republicans and democrats, they are responding to these national issues. it is animating and motivating both the republican base and the democratic base and so what you will see as president biden stands next to glovernor newsom they will talk about the issues and agenda and republican challenger larry elder ending with that baseless claim. before a single ballot has even been counted in california's recall election, republican challenger larry elder is pulling a page from the trump playbook questioning the results. >> we're going to file lawsuits in a timely fashion. what i believe is that no matter what they do and i believe there might very well be shenanigans as there were in the 2020

election. >> joe biden -- >> boo! >> i was called the blackface white supremacy. >> reporter: elder is a front runner on the second part of the ballot. the conservative radio host emerged early on as a contender to replace newsom helping to engage democrats to react and vote early like maria morales. >> when you have another candidate who is very similar to what we had four years ago, that's not what we want here in california. >> reporter: with just hours left to vote, democratic governor glovernor newsom will rally in california on election eve. >> vote no, no, no, no. >> reporter: newsom needs a simple majority to stay on the job. in rally after rally up and down the state, newsom argued the election is not just about california but the national democratic agenda namely policies on masks and vaccines

that newsom says could rollback if recalled. >> the contrast and the stakes could not be higher. this election is a matter of life and death. public health is on the ballot. >> and increasingly what you do hear from the new som campaign itself is confidence. you said this is the math. the math is on the democrat side. the wind is at the governor's back. just need democrats that their base is now paying attention. >> kung, thank you very much. if you do the math and have democrats hugely engaged in california, it's hard to defeat them. they haven't lost a statewide election in 15 years. we want to go to someone that knows a lot about this. long-time republican strategists that served as the deputy chief of staff. schwarzenegger for anyone that does not know won the election

in 2003 and rob, you of course, were his co-communications director for the campaign. you've been the heart from the california level and national level, as well. so when you hear gavin newsom saying in kung's piece that we played that this is act two of the big lie, all of these claims of fraud. is that what is happening here? >> well, fraud is not happening. of course, gavin newsom is more than happy to amp lify the fact donald trump inserted himself into this recall election on the very eve of it. it's what he needs to motivate democrats to vote. that's been his problem all summer democrats don't seem interested to vote for him. with the emerging of larry elder and trump weighing in today, it helps the governor motivate his democrats that out number republicans 2-1 in california to get to the polls or in this

case, turn in those ballots to a mailbox. >> so let me ask you about this because as you point out, trump is a gift to newsom. there are a lot of and behavior and i played a couple republican voters talking about conspiracy ballots and people being able to vote a bunch of times. they believed this. do you think that there are -- obviously, there is a few. a real number of californians who do believe these baseless claims? >> i think it's few. i mean, california has millions of republicans. so you're going to find some that are conspiratorial, some that very much are fans of the president. they're just incredibly out numbered. by in large, posmost republican are used to the fact we haven't won a statewide race in 15 years. we're out numbered 2-1 by democrats. the gap between democrats and

republicans since when schwarzenegger won 18 years ago to now is three times as many more democrats over republicans. it's just not a competitive state and to suggest that somehow this election is going to probably go according to those numbers and that it's fraudulent just really isn't credible. in someways i would hope that the president is hurting his own cause of perpetuating these conspiracies by attaching it. so it will probably be a comfortable win tomorrow for the governor. >> let me ask you, rob, this is your perspective. larry elder had a very different view of biden's 2020 presidential victory. in the sacramento bee's editorial he said i do believe joe biden won the election fairly and scarquarely. he said the truth. a few years later he said i want

a mulligan and says i didn't believe that. so is this actually just like that is maybe the perfect example of what it is to be a republican running for office? you have to knowingly lie about something so fundamental to get the backing of their own party? >> that should be the concern or at least the majority or plurality of republican voters. the candidate side of this ballot question is really functioning like a republican primary in california because there is no democrat. no democrat politician is running asking democrats for their vote. so candidates like elder are running like it's a close republican primary and trying to appeal to a very small minority, about 3.2 million voters out of 20 million some odd voters, more than that that are registered trying to appeal to them to be the top vote getter. so it shows no inclination of wanting to broaden beyond a base and actually win a seat in a blue state like california. elder is just trying to be the

can accurately say yes, george w. bush got us into the war and i, as you know, i broke with the president, president bush over the war but i think this is about donald trump sees public service as a sign of weakness and the bush family including george w. for the mistakes he made was dedicated in their lives to public service. donald trump never thinks about things in relation to public service or servant leadership. i think george w. bush was right to say the biggest thing, the biggest problem facing america today is not coming from overseas, it's right here in our country and the finger is pointed directly at donald trump and what he's done. >> so president bush, you know, to your point this was clear that's what he meant but didn't mention trump by name on saturday. of course, as you know, he's eluded to trump in critical ways before. the difference in this case was of course this was september 11th. an important day, a solum day, a 20th anniversary and a day that is, you know, central to the

entire legacy of george w. bush. so what do you think went into his decision to speak like this, to say this, to make this clear connection between the september 11th terrorists and the january 6th insurrectionists in his message? >> well, from what i know and from everything i've heard, he's been upset about this for a number of years and what transpired over the course of the last few years. george w bush has been actually doing what normally presidents, ex presidents do which is don't say anything, stay quiet, don't go after the former president or current president in this but i think at some point it's added up to way too much. as most americans, they tolerated, tolerated, tolerated and tried to speak out in subtle ways but after january 6th, there comes a point where americans have to make a decision what side their on. are they on the side of democracy and what it means to be in a diverse multi cultural nation or on the side of a

autocracy. he loves this country in a way that donald trump has never thought about doing. i think decency and all of those things are something that are part of george w. bush are not part of donald trump. >> so the statement today from trump is a reminder, you know, you're talking about ways he breaks the norms but how far outside the ex president's club is trump? i don't use it tritely. the norms of behavior and how you don't criticize a former or current. on saturday, a day that moved this entire nation, it was the 20th anniversary on a saturday and people were truly engaged with it. you saw former president bush and laura bush in sanksville pennsylvania. presidents clinton, obama and biden together on ground zero. former president trump was in new york but did not attend any of the memorials.

right, with the families? he went on his own visit to first respeonders and talked about how he won the election. >> great support. we won the election but what are you going to do? we're fighting like hell and we'll keep fighting. >> and then of course, matthew, he went to florida to do commentary on a boxing match that evening. look, he doesn't care about how things come across. that's clear. he does what he wants to do, but how significant was this decision of how he spent 9/11? >> well, i think it's such a reflection on what donald trump is and i think we've seen it numbers of times. this was much more of an underlying emphasized way that he's done this. he fundamentally has nothing, no care or no allegiance to anything other than me. there is not -- i don't think we is in his vocabulariry. the word we and how that applies

to the common good doesn't come across. it's all about himself and what is good or bad for him in the course of this. and i think we've seen example after example after example where he doesn't honor public service and his ability to sort of cast empathy, something that the lech kpresident president bs good at. he sees the ability to emphasize and raise people up as a sign of weakness. in the end it's ego driven. we seen it throughout the presidency and seen it in every statement he's made. it's all about his owner go and the nation as a whole. >> thank you very much. appreciate your perspective. >> thank you. next, the breaking news police we understand are preparing for the possibility of armed protesters at saturday's far right rally as we're hearing from trump supporters with this warning. >> should they be scared? >> they should be. the election was stolen.

breaking news, law enforcement preparing for the possibility of armed protesters at saturday's far right rally in

support of the january 6th r rioters hours after capitol warned of concerning online chatter about the rally and said temporary fencing will be return a day or two before hand due to concern of violence and capitol police arrested a california man in a truck with a bayonet and machete near dcn head quarters and on the truck painted a swastica and white power similar t sym symbols. what are they telling you? >> that's right there is confusion and mixed messages about this event on saturday. i'll say some of the major pedals of qanon and conspiracy theories, people telling people to go to wash waington on janua 6th, they're saying to stay away from washington on saturday. they're baselessly claiming this is a false flag operation, a way to entrap trump supporters.

that's a conspiracy theory in itself, that might be welcome news to some but what we know and hearing from capitol police, there is a concerning chatter online and there are some major conspiracy theorists saying not to show up in washington, that may not stop extreme folks from showing up. i want you to take a listen to a couple trump supporters i spoke to on saturday, both of whom did attend, did go to washington on january 6th. they said they didn't go into the capitol building. they said they're undecided and objective and the direction. >> there is chatter happening here in washington next week, arrested and political. >> they're stuck in solitary 23

hours a day. >> our own politicians. >> they're not given a speedty trial and the rights we should have. >> do you think what happened up there on the 6th of january was a stain on trump's presidency? >> i think it was a setup. >> in terms of this event on the 18th, you know, people up on capitol hill. >> are scared. >> are scared. should they be scare snd. >> they should be. the election was stolen. you know, there is no way -- i seen those millions of people here. if those people were here to do damage, they could have taken the capitol. >> easy. >> we could have busted every window but that's not why we were here. >> the only person that got killed that day was a trump supporter ashli babbitt. >> and she was murdered. >> and of course, police determined that the officer who shot ashli babbitt acted la lawfully and potentially saved lives and police officers that responded to the insurrection died since.

just important to point out, even though this couple said they're not sure whether they'll show up on saturday, they're hearing conspiracy theories that are scaring them away. they support the objectives and don't see anything that happened on january 6th as wrong. >> thank you very much. appreciate your time. so i want to get reaction right away from congresswoman stacy of the virgin islands and an impeachment member of president trump's second trial. i want to give you a chance to respond to the trump supporters. they are hearing the conspiracy theories maybe it's a false operation and yet, you should be squ scared. when you hear them and their belief in everything they say, what is your reaction listening to that? >> you know, i would first say that let's speak to the falsehood that only one person

was killed on that day. we know that over 100 police officers were injured, several police officers died fighting that insurrectionist crowd, those domestic terrorists that came to try to thwart the democratic process of our duly elected president of the united states. so let's put that to one bit of false hoot aside right there. if individuals want to come to the capitol and want to protest, this is the kind of country. we have a democratic process that allows for peaceful demons demonstrations. if they come to the capitol with the intent to do harm to the capitol building itself and break the law, they will have to face the consequences of that in the same way ashli babbitt and those other individuals faced the consequences of their actions. i agree that the police officer who was protecting not only the building of the capitol and the

floor of house but many members of congress and staff acted in a justifiable manner and ashli babbitt who was breaking the law and attempting to climb over individuals to come onto the capitol floor was in the wrong. so we will, you know, i'm grateful that capitol police have met with the speaker, with the majority leader and the speaker has invited, invited both the minority leader of the senate as well as the minority leader of the house to be a part of those briefings to ensure that the capitol is in fak ct safe, i'm grateful members of congress won't be there on that saturday to the best of my knowledge along with staff. >> that's very significant i realize. the reporting we have tonight is law enforcement is preparing for the possibility of armed protesters at this rally. you're hearing there is some conspiracy theorists telling

them not to come. nobody knows what to expect. the bigger question, the sentiment and fear of armed people coming, do you fear that it is a matter of time before something else happens, whether it's this saturday or another day? >> well, we know that throughout history and one of the things that we've seen in modern history is that a successful coup is always preceded by an unsuccessful one. and what we saw on january 6th was the unsuccessful coup and those individuals who were attempting to try and overturn our democratic process will continue to do so. i'm grateful that both the fbi as well as national security intelligence officers and our own capitol police as well as metropolitan and others are preparing at all times for the chatter they're hearing online

being a marie antoinette type and yet, this kind of book excerpt tells you exactly what you needed to know. that she was not monitoring the capitol riots to make sure that it didn't get out of control. she was kind of continuing as if she was going to be first lady for the second term and so i think, five days later, she did condemn the violence but it was more after her -- another former confident had written an article saying melania was come police s -- complicit in this. >> in a statement today to "politico." her team said this is an attempt to redeem herself as a failed press secretary and unprofessional behavior in the white house. okay. so we should note grisham was

with trump until she resigned on january 6th and she was promoted to melania's chief of staff after she stepped down that wouldn't add up to poor performance as press secretary and she knows a lot. how concerned are the trumps about this book? >> they're pretty concerned because they're trying to get copies of the book. people who stephanie grisham barely knows are calling her asking for the book and it could be packed full of nuggets that are potentially embarrassing about people like jared kushner and mark meadows. one other thing, that part of her comment saying her failed personal relationships in melania's statement to me was seen as a very low blow by many in trump world today because grisham had two divorces and a relationship with a former trump aide max miller that went very south for her and trump himself has had two divorces and so

tonight, the fbi released the first of several documents into the investigation of the 9/11 attacks and saudi arabia government in a sustained specked role. keep in mind the 15 of the 19 were saudi arabian. it is a heavily redacted document released following an executive order by president biden and details the fbi's scrutiny of alleged logistical support that an official, saudi arabia official and suspected intelligence agent gave to at least two 9/11 hijackers. sit -- complicit in the attacks. you have been demanding for a long time tirelessly these documents and more information about saudi arabia's alleged role in the 9/11 attacks and what the u.s. government knows, any kind of information. this is the first document. how far does it go in meeting your demands? >> thank you for having me, erin. this is a great and important story. this is a great first step for us. it is very significant that president biden has taken this action and first step but i want to caution it is just a first step and as you noted, it's heavily redacted. what we have from these documents alone is very proof of what we've been shouting about and screaming about for the past decade is that saudi government officials now have tangible evidence that saudi government officials even saudi government officials with diplomatic status were coordinating, having meetings with, talking to and logistically supporting the

hijackers. so, you know, there was never going to be a smoking gun and i see in the media a lot of people saying there is no smoking gun. there is no smoking gun. it's the preponderance of the evidence and the fact we have eight saudi government officials who the fbi have stated now on record in these fbi reporting that they were involved with supporting the hijackers in 9/11 and wanted to point out one thing. the author of this report has now been revealed. it's not been known to us for a long time but his name is john nicholas and he has come forward and propublica has outed his name and we would love for him to be the one that leads this declassification effort going forward. >> let me ask you about this. the parts that are redacted, there is redactions on every page but page 14, page 15, obviously,

the whole report, 16 pages, there's going to be more of them. it does center around a student in l.a. that the fbi suspected was a saudi intelligence agent who was deeply involved in providing lodging and financial support to two of the hijackers. when you look in here, what frustrates you the most? wait a minute, i'm sitting here and i can't finish my sentence. >> i know, right? you're about to get to the most juicy part and all of a sudden there's a big chunk of black. but we now have the world's experts on this. we have the best lawyers in the world, the best investigators in the world, and they're able to fill in those redactions just given everything that they have known for the past decade. former fbi agent katherine hunt, she needs credit here. she recreated the encore investigation so we're able to piece together a lot of those redactions. this is significant. this is very, very significant. this is the first time that the federal government has acknowledged that, yes, we've

had these documents all along and here you go and they're giving these documents to us. so this is -- you know, this is our vindication. this is us saying here they are. >> the saudi foreign minister says that they welcome the release of the 9/11 documents. look, they're coming out, what else are they going to say. look, it shows no saudi involvement in the terror attacks. obviously you clearly think the released document shows complicity by the saudis and it does show saudi officials helping those involved in 9/11. i guess the question is whether that was with the knowledge of the actual saudi government. how confident are you that the saudi government will be held accountable for what you see in here happened? >> well, we need to be persistent. we need to keep going. this is just the tip of the iceberg. there are thousands of pages of documents coming. we have broad bipartisan support in the united states congress. you know, how far are we going to let saudi arabia continue to go? you know, they have a horrible human rights record.

they -- at what point does the united states government needs to take action and we have broad bipartisan support in the united states congress. maybe we call for sanctions. maybe we list them as a state sponsor of terror. but we're going to keep fighting and keep pushing. the families are more determined than ever and we have our evidence and a president who's willing to take our side and stand for us and for once and for all hold the saudis accountable. we have the u.s. government on our backs. this is a great moment and we are in such a different place than we were four years ago. you know, the saudis need to pay attention to that and to realize that. >> i appreciate your time. thank you very much. >> thank you for having me. >> all right. next, media mogul and convicted killer shug knight, mafia leaders and gang members

will california governor gavin newsom free robert f. kennedy's killer from prison? the state parole board in california recommended releasing sirhan sirhan, a decision that is now splitting the entire kennedy family. we are learning about the cast of characters who have mentored sirhan as he awaited a parole decision. here's tom foreman. >> how are you doing, mr. sirhan? >> reporter: in sirhan sirhan's long quest for parole, the key to moving forward came not from a clever lawyer but from fellow inmates at this san diego prison

and a program called redemption row, aimed at prison and prisoner reform. >> we address both the needs of the incarcerated population and ultimately the communities they will be returning to. >> reporter: convicted murderer joel bap teeft who was tied to the aryan brotherhood and cameron morris approached sirhan roughly a year ago according to a program leader. then they recruited suge knight who told sirhan i'm a global villain myself. people think i killed tupac and several others associated with organized and/or violent crime joined in too. together they urged sirhan to reconsider his thoughts, his anger and his crime, according to the president of the program. >> they started to just talk to sirhan and observe him and, you know, create trust with him. >> reporter: it was not easy.

other stories from my teammates inside about their own experience with gun violence, the loss of their loved ones and he was able to put himself in that position and understand the horror. >> reporter: for most of the surviving members of robert kennedy's family, sirhan's alleged transformation has not been enough. kennedy's widow, ethel, said in a recent statement he should not have the opportunity to terrorize again. he should not be paroled. but a couple of kennedy children say sirhan deserves a chance at freedom and importantly the parole board members who heard his case think so too. this is not a done deal. governor gavin newsom or the full parole board would have to give it a thumbs up and absolutely there are plenty of people who say this is just a guy gaming the system. but, the mere fact that one of the most rereviled assassins is
