>> reporter: the u.s. organization christian aid ministry says 16 americans and one canadian were kidnapped on saturday. five children among the group. we're told gang members stopped their vehicle at gun point. while in a statement christian and aid ministry said authorities are seeking ways to help find them. the kidnapping is the latest in the spike of lawlessness.

earlier we spoke about the spike in violence. >> the one involved in this incident, a very, very big gang that has branches throughout haiti. one of the biggest employers in haiti right now other than the government. all of the gangs put together are the second biggest employer in haiti. they have undercover relationships with political figures, political parties. this is not new in haiti but it's way worse than it's ever been. >> while cnn's melissa bell recently returned and is following this. she joins us live. good morning to you, melissa. what more do we know about this gang, 400 mawozo? >> it is one of the gangs you've been hearing so involved in the huge surge.

before this there was 629 kidnappings since january. this is a scourge in daily lives of patience. there's a 300% rise in kidnappings since the month of july. that was the month the haitian president was killed in his own bedroom. one interesting parallel to be made. with the kidnapping taking place back in april. a group of french missionaries kidnapped on april 11th and released at the end of the month. they praised the catholic church to try and compensate for the lack of security. it was that very kidnapping that led to such outrage.
