so this is "don lemon tonight." thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate it. this is our breaking news. the fbi, u.s. marshals and sheriff's deputies in michigan actively searching at this hour for the parents of a 15-year-old high school shooting suspect, ethan crumbley. james and jennifer crumbley now facing four counts of of involuntary manslaughter. attorneys for the couple claimed hours ago that they left town after the shooting for their own safety. but tonight signs the couple took steps to help them remain out of sight if they want, taking thousands of dollars out of an atm and turning off their cell phones. and even with this horrific mass shooting taking a bizarre legal twist the community in oxford, michigan gathering tonight to remember what matters most, and that's the four innocent teenagers killed and the seven people wounded. we're covering all angles of of this story at this hour for you.
11:03 pm
cnn's shimon prokupecz joins us from pontiac, michigan. good evening to you, shimon. the community is on edge. there is a vigil at the high school that resulted in scenes of panic. what happened there? >> reporter: yeah, don, this is really tough to watch. there was a vigil, family members, people from the high school, everyone gathered for the first time able to be together, and someone passed out. and everyone panicked because they started calling for help and people just started running, thinking the worst. take a look at some of the scenes and what was going on there just a short time ago. >> what is it? >> someone passed out. >> stay calm. stay calm! stay calm! stay calm! stay calm, everyone! it's all right! it's okay! >> relax. relax! >> more people will be hurt by running. somebody just went down. relax. slow down. >> it's okay, everyone. please go back to your places. everyone's okay.
11:04 pm
everyone is okay! >> relax, please. >> and don, really, this really shows the fear, right, that just still exists in this community and probably will exist for a long time. you hear the sheriff telling people to relax but that's what is going on here now. people are really, really afraid. >> and they're angry as well that something like this could happen. shimon, it's been a day of wild developments in this story, in this case really. there is now a manhunt for the parents of the accused shooter. talk to us about what's happening here. >> yeah. so they're still on the run. what's really interesting is there was this lawyer who claims to represent them. she told us in a statement that they weren't running anywhere, that they were going to come back, that they just left for security reasons but they were planning to be back here today at 4:00 for an arraignment. it's now 11:00 and they are nowhere to be found and as you've said, the u.s. marshals and fugitive task force are out
11:05 pm
searching for them. but there's been a lot of back and forth here as to whose fault this is. is it the sheriff's fault? is it the prosecutor's fault? take a listen to some of what the prosecutor said explaining some of what happened here. >> the prosecutor's office doesn't arrest people. we were in constant communication with the sheriff's office. our prosecutors that were leading the case and they were surveilling them and we were told they were surveilling them. we were getting updates about the cell phone pinging and they conveyed to us that they were confident where the two people were. >> reporter: and don, lastly, also, what happened was several hours ago i spoke to the under sheriff here. he said the last time they talked to the lawyers for these parents was around 4:00. and at that time the lawyers said they had not spoken to their clients. so of course, now, the big question is where are they? there certainly doesn't appear to be any, any reason to believe
11:06 pm
that at this point that the parents intend to surrender, don. >> it is really so bizarre. i mean, what happened to you there this evening with the parents and of course, this horrific, horrific shooting with teenagers dead. thank you, shimon. i appreciate it. i want to bring in senior law enforcement and former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe. and casey jordan as well join. they both join us. good evening to both of you. andrew, the crumbleys withdrew $4,000 today reportedly from the atm about half an hour from oxford. how much will that help law enforcement track them down? it's interesting. $4,000. that's a lot of money to be able to withdraw from an atm. there is usually a limit. >> it is. and obviously, those limits can be different for different people. not sure how they work that out.
11:07 pm
you know, these are exactly the sorts of things that the fbi and the marshals and sheriffs are looking at right now. so you're going to take every single fact you know about these people, former addresses, colleagues, neighbors, friends, family members, email addresses, phone numbers, known credit cards, atm cards, all that stuff can be helpful when you're trying to find someone who is on the run. it very, very hard, don, to be on the run. it takes an enormous amount of money and it usually takes someone who has the cunning and street smarts to be able to pull it off. it doesn't look like these two people fit that description so i would expect they will be caught, you know, sometime in the not too distant future but law enforcement has their work cut out for them now because this is a situation that really never should have happened. >> yeah, listen, casey, i've got to ask you. there were so many red flags outlined by the prosecutor.
11:08 pm
listen and then we'll talk about it. >> the morning of the shooting, the next day, ethan crumbley's teacher came upon a note on ethan's desk that alarmed her to the point that she took a picture of it on her cell phone. the note contained the following, a drawing of a semi-automatic handgun pointing at the words, quote, the thoughts won't stop, help me, end quote. in another section was a drawing of a bullet with the following words above that bullet, quote, blood everywhere, end quote. between the drawing of the gun and the bullet is a drawing of a person who appears to have been shot twice and bleeding. below that figure is a drawing of a laughing emoji. further down the drawing are the words, quote, my life is useless, end quote. and to the right of that are the words, quote, the world is dead, end quote. >> it's like, casey, like he was coming apart and this was playing out right in front of everyone's eyes. what gives here? >> well, i'm very happy that we now have the details of what
11:09 pm
exactly prompted that meeting with the parents. when we were chatting last night, don, we didn't know what exactly the leakage was. but now that we have these details, we know that the school acted properly. they called the mother, who as we know did not actually return their call. she got their voicemail, and instead she texted her son, "lol don't get caught next time." and then the following day when this notebook, the drawings, the help me, blood everywhere, the teacher was so disturbed she took i apicture of it it, which was important evidence because then he scrawled it out. but the most important thing we learned from this meeting with the prosecutor this morning is that the parents attended that meeting, they resisted taking their son home with them at that moment even though they were informed they must get him mental health treatment within 48 hours. instead they wanted to leave him in school and they did not ask if he had a gun or alert the school officials that he had
11:10 pm
just bought a gun four days before and he had that gun potentially in his possession. and that is why all the attention is on these parents and a very rare and unprecedented charge, four counts of involuntary manslaughter for these parents. basically for being a party to the crime and not acting responsibly, acting recklessly when they knew he could have the gun. >> what do you think of the charges, andrew? unprecedented. talk to me about that. >> yeah, i totally agree with casey. it's unprecedented. we don't typically see this. there are definitely -- there's a history of cases that have been brought against parents who were in the home with a gun out that was maybe fell into the hands much a young child who used it to hurt themselves or someone else. we have seen parents held responsible in those fact patterns but never on a fact pattern like this in the wake of a mass shooting or school shooting. but you have to say after listening to what we learned from the prosecution today on these facts, it's absolutely
11:11 pm
called for. i think it's still going to be a hard case to prove reckless homicide or negligent homicide is always a tough thing to prove to a jury. but you really have to go forward with facts like these because it's such a complete offense to the community and to the victims in this horrible crime. >> here is the breaking news on this case. you see there on your screen, u.s. marshals announcing a $10,000 reward to find the parents of the suspected school shooter. and there is a wanted poster right there for one of the parents. for jennifer, for both of them. for jennifer crumbley and james crumbley, the father -- >> as was promised by their lawyers. shimon, if we could just recap as well more of those details from that press conference. i monitored it as did you in person. the conversation between the mother in this case and the alleged shooter, it was
11:12 pm
extraordinary in terms of what led up to all this. >> reporter: yeah, really extraordinary. there was several text messages that the prosecutors and investigators now have. on monday, the day before the shooting, when he was in class a teacher reported to the school and to the parents that he was researching looking at ammunition, bullets on his cell phone. they alerted the school administration. the school then went and alerted the parents. the prosecutor said that they have a text message that the mother sent to their son saying "lol i'm not mad at what happened, you just have to be better -- you just have to be better at not getting caught." so that was one of the text
11:13 pm
messages. then on the day of the shooting they talk about -- she talked about another text message where after they get word and they hear that there's this shooting at the school there's a text message that she sends to her son saying something to the effect of "don't do it." so obviously, really just incredible and chilling information just for her to have that presence of mind and to say things the way she did to her son was really, really disturbing and frightening to listen to the prosecutor lay all this information out and to think that a mother would do something like that or think the way she was thinking certainly was very, very chilling and striking. >> yeah.
11:14 pm
and the prosecutor then laid out the fact that the father immediately apparently went home and went to look for the gun. there is the issue of that backpack. right, shimon? >> reporter: yeah. >> that he had a backpack with him. and the prosecutor, karen mcdonald, made clear that she alleges they have every reason to believe that while he was going through that meeting with his parents and school officials, right there with him was that backpack. the gun was in there. and that she believed the parents should have assumed that he could actually have that weapon on him. and yet they let him go back to class. >> reporter: that's right. and yet they were in the room, right? they come to the school for a meeting with the administration. they never tell anyone at the school there's this concern because you know, they bought this weapon for him according to the prosecutor. they never say okay, let's look in your bag or let's look and see if the weapon -- if the gun
11:15 pm
is at home before we come there. like certain steps were not taken. and that's all part of why the prosecutor announced these charges, these charges of involuntary manslaughter against them. the fact his parents did nothing to try and secure the weapon. the fact that she says that obviously they say that they know their son went to a gun range with one of the parents. so all of this was what led them to ultimately decide where they felt that the parents didn't do enough to protect really the students, right? but also the kid from getting his hands on that gun. >> and shimon, we're going to pause there for one second. i want to welcome our viewers who are just joining us here with the breaking news into cnn that james and jennifer
11:16 pm
crumbley, they are the parents of the alleged school shooter in oxford county, michigan. they were charged, will be charged, are yet to be arraigned in connection with that shooting and they have been on the run for several hours. the breaking news in to us here at cnn that police now say in detroit that they have located the parents and that they now have them in custody. joining me again here is shimon prokupecz. he has been on the scene several days now but in the last few hours as police were mounting a significant search in that detroit area. and shimon, if um, just bring us right up to date with what's going on right now. as you understand it, police do have the parents in custody now, right? >> reporter: they have the parents in custody. they were apprehended a short time ago after a car was discovered, the car that police had been searching for was discovered on detroit -- in detroit's east side. about 40 minutes or so from
11:17 pm
oakland, where we've been the last few days. the car was discovered by someone in the neighborhood near an industrial building. and they were seen, the parents, these fugitives were seen walking away from the car and into a building. the police descended on this area, heavily armed officers. some of them are still here. and also federal officials, u.s. marshals, and police officers from all around this area came to this location. they searched the building and w we're told they were found on the first floor of this building, taken into custody without incident and they've now been transported by the police to a detention center. >> and shimon, as you're speaking we are seeing video of the scene right now. obviously quite a police presence. they didn't get very far and not for very long. during the day it was interesting to hear certain conflicting information from their lawyers, right? that at one point they said oh,
11:18 pm
no, they haven't gone anywhere, they fear for their safety, they will be at the arraignment. and then they didn't show up. can you take us through what prosecutors were thinking at this time? because at that point they actually faced criticism themselves, right? because the prosecutor karen mcdonald was having a press conference and at the same time we know now the sheriff's office had no idea where these parents were at that hour. >> reporter: no, they clearly had no idea. and what's interesting is for days we've been asking the sheriff's office do you know where the parents are, do you know where they are? and they didn't want to tell us and they said to us, well, we have ways where we can track them. and we've learned yes, they were tracking them through cell phone pinging sites and that's how they were looking. that's how they kind of had an idea of where they were. when the prosecutors announced that they were filing charges, obviously the parents were not in custody yet. and that obviously raises a lot of concerns because why would
11:19 pm
you announce charges against someone without them being in custody? so it's just not the way things are usually done here. and so what happens is for hours we're waiting and waiting to get word of -- on whether they were in custody. there was supposed to be an arraignment four hours after the charges -- we were supposed to have the first court appearance four hours after the announcement of the charges. and then about two hours or so before that we started getting information that they were nowhere to be found, that they had not surrendered and that the police were looking for them. then we get word from a lawyer who claims to have been hired by them who tells us that, well, the police may be saying that they are fugitives and they are fleeing, that's not the case, they're going to surrender, they left the area for their safety but they're going to come back and surrender. obviously, that didn't happen. and by about 2:00 here we
11:20 pm
started seeing a different tone from police as they started calling them fugitives and they started searching for them. and now obviously several hours later they've been found and taken into custody. >> yeah. and shimon, you can only imagine the relief in the community, although this is certainly something that should not have happened. shimon, i'm going to let you go right here. i know you will continue to be on this story in the coming minutes and hours as we learn more about what police did in terms of apprehending this couple, the fact that they are now in custody and the fact that tomorrow they might finally get to that arraignment that they were supposed to get to on friday. shimon prokupecz for us live on the scene in detroit. and recapping for us once again, the parents of the alleged school shooter in oxford county, michigan are now in custody. now, i want to stress here, we've spoken a lot about the crime, and yet here are the victims. right? the tragic part here is that
11:21 pm
there were four young teenagers lost here. as shimon just mentioned. you know, there were crowds of mourners gathered in michigan friday night. you see them there. they are holding candles as they remembered the lives cut short by gun violence earlier this week. those four students who were killed when that gunman, as i was saying, opened fire at oxford high school on tuesday. there they are. they range in age from 14 to 17. and it has been absolutely heartbreaking. it has shaken the community to the core to hear about those four young people who are now dead and many asking questions about why, whether it was the parents or the school or law enforcement in the area, about why something was not done about this sooner. we will continue to stay on top of the story for us in the coming hours. for right now, though, we are going to go to a quick break and we'll be back with more news right after. we'll look at what you've saved, what you'll need, and help you build a flexible plan for cash flow designed to last.

so there are good reasons not to panic over the new omicron variant of the coronavirus. vaccines is just one of them. the world health organization says that so far, though, no deaths have been reported from it. and most cases do at this point, although it's early, most cases do seem to be mild. and here's what the w.h.o.'s chief scientist said friday. >> it is something to worry about. certainly we didn't want to see another variant emerge and spread around the world at this stage of the pandemic. certainly not what we wanted. but we're not entirely surprised and i think we're much better prepared to handle it. >> so there is a strong caveat, of course. omicron is spreading with lightning speed across the planet and scientists don't know if vaccines offer enough protection. they are optimistic that shots, though, are still the best option. they just don't have the hard data yet. in south africa, meantime, where
11:27 pm
omicron was first found, covid cases have quadrupled since tuesday. that's in just a little more than four days. a surprising number of those cases have also been diagnosed now in small children. now, omicron is a mutated form of the coronavirus. you can see a diagram of it here. now, the areas that we see indicate a color difference from the original virus that was first seen at the end of 2019. and researchers now say the mutation includes genetic material that looks like it actually came from a virus that causes the common cold. that could make omicron more transmissible. what we don't know, if it will also make it perhaps weaker in terms of illness. now, a university study in south africa also found that it's likely that omicron can evade immunity from a past infection more easily than other strains. what does that mean? it means there could be a greater risk of catching covid
11:28 pm
twice or even more. cnn's larry medoo is in johannesburg, south africa. the news in south africa, quadrupled. right? i really did a double take when i saw those numbers. test positivity 25%. what's the situation right now with hospitalizations? >> reporter: so that's what we don't know, paula. there's just not enough data yet. and there's an explanation for that. because it's very early in the fourth wave of covid here in south africa. there's just not enough data that scientists have been able to gather to figure out exactly how serious this is, if it's leading to more hospitalizations, and that is because the severity is usually very low at the beginning and at the end of the wave. so they're wait forget a couple more weeks to see if more people who are getting covid right now in south africa will end up in hospital. what we do know is that cases have quadrupled just in the last four days. that's extraordinary.
11:29 pm
and the positivity rate of 24.3% in south africa is also out of the ordinary. the health ministry here saying just two months ago the positivity rate was under 5%. so you can see how quickly that has jumped. the other two tidbits to take out of of this is that they're seeing some reinfections from people who were already vaccinated who are getting covid again but they don't know if this will be more serious than delta, for instance. another tidbit also to take out from the data that we've seen from south africa, the national institute of communicable diseases and one of the things was that some children as young as 2 years old in one small region are making up some of those who are getting hospitalized. so there's still a whole lot we don't know. but what we do know here in the south african case, at least 98% of those who are getting covid right now are those who are unvaccinated. that's why this country is encouraging as many people as possible to get vaccinated. as they learn more about the

omicron variant and what it does to the body and if vaccines are effective, they think vaccines will still be reasonably useful to protect against severe disease and to protect against death. even as they still try to figure out where exactly are we going with this, paula. >> and that piece of advice on the vaccine is one constant we have had in the year now since we've actually had these vaccines. larry madowo, thanks for the update. in the meantime countries in europe are enforcing additional restrictions as cases climb and the omicron variant is discovered right across the continent. i'm joined by cnn contributor barbie nadeau from rome who is following all the latest developments. and again, we've been talking about this for several days. the caseload is alarming in europe but now also the new variant. >> reporter: that's right. they're still dealing with the delta variant here. look at germany. they're predicting maybe 6,000 people in intensive care by christmas no matter what restrictions they take. and they're going to be taking more restrictions, especially against the unvaccinated.
11:31 pm
wove we've seen every country in europe have a slowly inching up high number of new cases. but it's still the delta variant. while the omicron variant has been found across the european union, it is still delta that everybody's dealing with right now. and it's still the unvaccinated that are propelling this forward. and every country now is doing something with regard to the unvaccinated. the european commission has suggested that vaccine mandates for the entire european union might be the next step. paula? >> yeah, barbie, i want to thank you for that update. as you said, this is really fueled by delta, not even the new variant right now. and they're having significant problems going into the holiday season. barbie nadeau for us live from rome. appreciate it. still to come here on "cnn newsroom," fears of a russian invasion in ukraine are growing as tensions between the two countries escalate. ahead, what the u.s. president says he's prepared to do to keep that from happening. and he gets one-on-one coaching when he needs it.

was it allowed to be picked up and taken freely at his discretion? or was it stolen? >> reporter: november 27th. prosecutors say the mother, jennifer, posts "mom and son day, testing out his new christmas present." november 29th a teacher reports the boy is searching for ammunition on his cell phone in class. officials say the school calls and e-mails the mom, no response. but jennifer texts her son "lol i'm not mad at you. you have to learn not to get caught." the next day another teacher sees the boy with a note. >> a drawing of a semi-automatic handgun pointing at the words, quote, the thoughts won't stop, help me, end quote. in another section of the note was a drawing of a bullet with the following words above that bullet. quote, blood everywhere, end quote. >> reporter: there is also, prosecutors say, a drawing of a bloody body, the words "my life is useless. the world is dead."
11:46 pm
shortly after 10:00 a.m. officials say his parents come to a meeting at the school, are told their son must get counseling but they resist taking him out of school, don't mention the new gun, and the boy returns to class. his parents leave. >> we have to believe that he had the weapon either on his person, in his backpack or somewhere secreted in that travel route. >> reporter: just before 1:00 p.m. investigators say ethan goes tone a bathroom with his backpack, comes out gun in hand, firing. four students are killed, seven wounded. he is apprehended minutes later. at 1:22 officials say his mother texts "ethan, don't do it." his father? >> upon hearing that there was an active shooter on that day mr. crumbley drove straight to his home to look for his gun. >> reporter: 1:37 the dad calls 911 to report his gun missing and to say his son may be involved.
11:47 pm
but in the wake of the note just hours before the violence officials clearly thought there should have been more. >> the notion that a parent could read those words and also know that their son had access to a deadly weapon that they gave him is unconscionable, and i think it's criminal. >> reporter: of course there are questions whether school officials acted properly. but the prosecutor says simply anyone who saw the warning signs who could have stopped this should have done something. tom foreman, cnn, washington. >> so many disturbing allegations in that report. now, earlier i spoke with cnn legal analyst areva martin about just how rare it is for charges like this to be filed against parents, especially when it comes to school shootings. take a listen. >> we have not seen parents charged frequently in cases involving active shooters on school campuses. in fact, according to some research, there have only been four parents charged in
11:48 pm
similar-type cases. so it really is groundbreaking for this prosecutor to come forward with involuntary manslaughter charges against these parents. but when you look at the evidence in this case, it's really overwhelming. you mentioned at the top of the show about parenting. these parents are examples of everything you don't want to do with respect to a kid, and primarily it's ignore the warning signs. apparently, there were really significant red flags and warning signs that these parents quite simply ignored. >> you know, that text message chilling where she allegedly, prosecutors say, that the mother texted him and said "don't do it." does that perhaps intend to say that she knew that perhaps he was even having thoughts of this? >> that is a really important question, paula. and i'm sure one that the prosecutors want to learn more about. we do know that this mother sent another inappropriate text message when she was notified that her son was on his phone looking for ammunition, she sent
