strategic ambiguity had changed and he said no. the president trying to tamp downen the suggestion he discarded with this long-standing u.s. stance. and now the president has, his comments has generated plenty of reaction but i won't say, in talking to the president's aids today, there is not a great deal of consternation that he seems to have gone off script slightly. i think they think the calculus in the global environment has changed somewhat by russia's war in ukraine, by the invasion of ukraine. and the president himself said yesterday that the burden on the world to respond if china invades taiwan was greater now that russia has invaded ukraine. and so, today unspoken but very clear target in all of this is, of course, china. and today, when the leaders are meeting this quad summit meeting, some of the announcements have china in the background.

one of them has todo with maritime accessibility and maritime accountability. that's certainly something that has been a point of contention between the u.s., china and other nations in the region. but there is another unspoken audience in the president's references to the war in ukraine. and that's the indian prime minister who the president will be meeting one on one later this hour. they haven't gone along with the western sanctions. the president will be having hath conversation with modi as well. certainly-president trying to tie all of this together on his final day in asia. and you heard him speaking about the war with in ukraine earlier. he said this is more than a european issue. it's a global issue. and the japanese prime minister said we cannot let the same happen in the indo-pacific. that crisis still looming over the final day of the president's

>> it's been over and over again nasty abuse of governor kemp. and he endorsed joe biden's win in 2020. his vit reall hasn't helped them do a whole lot. is that a sign of trump's influence, that it's waning or some kind of out liar? >> i think brian kemp has been an embarrassment. i think he'll be an embarrassment to donald trump. there's no race that he wanted to win probably more than this. no elected official he wanted to punish more than the governor of georgia. but he picked a plotting horse in david perdue who didn't raise a lot of money e. and he was running against someone in brian kemp, who is governed in a very conservative manner. this is a governor who has passed a six-week abortion ban, a law that has drawn broad condemnation for restricting access to the vote.

and taken steps to make it tougher to talk about race in classrooms in georgia. in a lot of ways, he's fortified himself in the republican party. donald trump over reached in georgia as well. he eendorsed candidates against republican incumbent governor, attorney general, secretary of state and i think from the republicans i talked to, there was a back lash against the sheer breath of him coming in and essentially putting the scarlet letter on all of their republican officials. but i think it would be ea mistake to read what is probably going to be a disappointing night for him as a sign that his influence has waned, especially around the claims of election fraud and the kind of candidates looking to control the 2024 elections. >> well get to the overall picture in a moment. but first perdue wrapped up his campaign about w a racist remark about stacey abrams.

demographic and cultural face of america. he is the fundamentally most powerful fuel in the engine for the trump coalition. polling is very clear on that. and i think perdue was reaching out to that in a final gesture but it's obviously not going to be enough. >> 5:38. more than 70% of the endorsees believe the was forged. combine that with the republican party. majority believe, despite no evidence with that joe biden's election was illegitimate, what does that look like into 2024? is. >> the same in the last cnn poll. 77% of republican voters say joe biden's election is illegitimate. that's because, in partb, there has been so little pushback from other voices in the republican party, challenging the big lie. and one of the results is that candidates aspouzing the big lie are running to control the

election machinery, as i wrote tonight on cnn.com in virtually all of the states that will decide the 2024 election. whether we're talking about the five states that switch from trump in 2016 to biden in 2020. which is georgia, arizona, michigan, wisconsin. other contested states in state after state, we see republicans have either already nominated candidates for the big lie, candidates who aspouse the big lie for attorney general and governor positions. or theyerant serious contenders as the summer goes on and this is a crisis rolling towards the country in slow motion. one republican former state chair said yesterday that this could induce chaos in 2024. for example in georgia, joyedy heist says if the election would have been fair, donald trump would have won georgia. he has a reasonable chance of

ukrainian president zelenskyy warns up to 100 people could be ekilled every day. they're reporting heavy fire into luhansk. other nearby towns have been hit by heavy shelling and rocket attacks. as vladimir putin faces pressure, inincludeding from a long-time russian diplomat. a 20-year veteran announced his resignation monday and criticized what he called an aggressive war unleashed by the russian president. they say that resignation shows there are russians who disagree with what mr. putein is doing,b despite all the russian propaganda. >> at the very outset, he eenvisioned using overwhelming

>> reporter: ab solutely because india has yet to condemn's russian's actions in ukraine, while the other three have called out russia's actions, india has been on the fence. as far as the u.n. statements are concerned, they've gone as far as condemning the violence and killings but they haven't directly condemned russia and that has been a bone of contention when it comes to the west. there's been relentless pressure to come out and take a clear stance against russia. like you pointed out, india's ties go back decades. it's heavily reliant on russia for its defense supplies. you have three countries more or less on the same page with russia's actions. but india has been focussed on maintaining the balancing act until now. i spoke to a senior fellow and

she had to say it's a bigger picture the quad has to look at, at this point in time. they have to find common ground. >> i think it's about managing divergences. like a lot of issue and interest-based coalitions, this is not about same-minded countries coming together. for it's about like-minded countries. there's a set of issue os on which there's convergence that brings them together. and in the kwquad's case, it's about a free open and prosperous inclousive rules' based region in the indo-pacific. >> reporter: the biden's administration is conscious of the fact that they're the economic alternative when it comes to china. and that's why they can't push india beyond a point. and what's really -- what the two leaders will be focusing on is food security, given that india very recently has banned the export of wheat.
