9:04 pm
had she followed the path of election lies. she says she was simply not willing to do that. >> two years ago i won this primary with 73% of the vote. i could easily have done the same again. the path was clear. but it would've required that i go along with president trump's lie about the 2020 election. it would've required that i enable his ongoing efforts to unravel our democratic system and attacked the foundation of our republic. that was a path that i could not and would not take. >> the speech from cheney was infused with history. she's a student of history, a storied in her own right, talking about the young and fragile democracy that the united states indeed has. she talked about the need to bring americans together. republicans, democrats, independents. she urged them to join her. but i did not say was joined her for what exactly. she tipped out to the line, clearly making the case that she's going to be involved in the fight ahead for democracy.
9:05 pm
but didn't say in what form that would take. she has not talk about a presidential run of her own, as many supporters at her event certainly would like her to do. but she did talk about the urgency facing the country. and the imperative nature of republicans and democrats and independents to come together against donald trump. she said her greatest grohl is still keeping him from the oval office. jeff zeleny, cnn, jackson wyoming. v >> two republican strategist join us. now hallie stewart and cnn political commentator, host of the podcast hot mics from left to right. she's lost a former communications director for ted cruz. a three decade long veteran of republican politics. as well as serving as communications director for the republican national committee. let's start wyoming with this cheney, the outcome was not unexpected giving her conversion from cheney supporter and cheney critic to -- >> we are fed up with liz

cheney. you deserve a representative who knows what it means to ride for the brand. somebody who will fight to protect your freedoms and liberties from these unconstitutional power grabs. >> so alice, we will begin with the. this is the price that elected republicans will now pay for criticizing and standing up to donald trump? >> it clearly appears that way, don. we are seeing it in many primary races across the country. that if you stand up to donald trump, and you refused to accept the election fraud claims. then you are facing a challenger. in many cases, you will lose. it really is astounding. i talked with a reporter with a newspaper in wyoming today. the cowboys state daily. and he said he was really surprised as he covered this race, seeing the people just really buy in to the whole election denial complaints. this was really the cornerstone of harriet hageman's campaign. it was refusing the outcome of
9:07 pm
the 2020 elections. and trying to refuse the certification of the election. and the big election lies. and, in essence, the majority of people there in wyoming bought into it. and supported her. but, clearly, but we're going to see with this cheney. this was clearly the end of her current election and her term in office. but she is going to fight on. she understood the challenges that she has to face. by standing up to trump, not just by voting for his impeachment but also her work on the january six committee. and she is going to continue that fight and her goal ahead is to just make sure that donald trump does not get back into the white house. with that in mind, back in june, cheney had this morning for her fellow republicans. listen to this. >> to my republican colleagues, who are defending the indefensible, there will come a day when donald trump is gone. but your dishonor will remain.

>> so doug, cheney is the last ten house republicans who voted to impeach trump. for retired, for the last primaries, only to stand for reelection. the day of reckoning make becoming but trump backing seems to me he would primary. what is the incentive to not go against trump? >> the message that we heard from the cheney was a very powerful one nationally, and for the republican party. it is not one necessarily designed to win a primary. if you look at the last two commercials that she, read she was incitement vote for liz cheney, and her ad that she ran herself, the one that her father also cut former campaign. this was all about donald trump and setting the stage for what is next. it is donald trump's party, we have seen so many republicans who oppose donald trump and whatever form, they really kowtow to him. no better example of that then what we saw tonight. harriet hageman with somebody, who had 2016 was one of the people trying to block donald trump at the convention. from getting the nomination back when she was a liz cheney supporter. this is how the party is

change. i don't think it surprises anybody. and that's why liz cheney is clearly running through the tape on this and not go to stop running. we will see her first hearing of the january six hearing and september. we'll see what she does next, but will be a long fight for. it >> talking about those assets that she ran. one of them was actually endorsement by her father, dick cheney. the former vice president. who ran this spot and he began by saying that donald trump is the greatest threat to democracy this country has ever seen. he is part of it. >> he tried to steal the last election. using lies and violence. to keep himself in power, after the voters had rejected him. he is a coward. a real man wouldn't lie to his supporters. he lost his election and he lost big. i know it, he knows it, and deep down, i think most republican note. lynn and i are so proud of liz for standing up to the truth and doing what she knows is right. honoring her oath to the constitution, so many in our parties are too scared to do
9:10 pm
so. >> this through the eyes, the gravelly voice, the music kind of ruined it a little bit. but dick cheney was once the face of the hard right of the gop. when it comes out with this dire warning, is this message that fell flat for republicans in wyoming? >> it certainly did. the message we heard tonight and moving forward is that she understood going into this fight that it was potentially going to cost her her seat. and she said that no office is worth the principles that we are sworn to protect. and she was not going to give up the principles that she was sworn to protect in terms of abiding by the constitution and the election process. last time by she won by 73%, and if she just went along with donald trump and the lies, she could certainly go on to win again. but the goal here, and the fear, is that while this might be a winning message for republicans and the primaries. i don't see it as a winning message in general elections
9:11 pm
across the country. under donald trump, we've lost the white house, we lost the house, and the senate. so this method of going after elections and going after government agencies and going after the certification of elections. it is not going to be something that i see will be a winning formula in the midterm elections. that is the big fare. it might be good on primary day, but general actions will likely be a different story. >> i want to pick up on that. hi boseman's win in wyoming brings a winning strict for trump in the candidates he's but -- as allison sort of alluded to. it may represent the maga wing of the party but it doesn't represent the mainstream. could this be trump's achilles heel coming january election? that there is a big voter turnout, but these guys won't get elected. >> it is part of it. one of the things that we see that every state administered its election differently. different candidates and different ways of doing things. so oftentimes donald trump's endorsed candidate won with 32%
9:12 pm
of the vote, where they might have lost with 32% of the vote. the trump endorsement is the one that most republicans want and the one they want the most. but it is not necessarily a indicative of what is going to happen in that primary. state laws and individual candidates matter. and so moving forward, as we have some of these trump candidates who have won, they are in very competitive races. where they are behind in races where they should be winning. where some of the trump backed people lost. we see republicans who are poised to win in november. it is a very mixed bag for what donald trump's ultimate result would be. the republican party is fearful of him, what we used to call conservatism and republican party, now it is about one man. it is not a conservative policy. liz cheney had a 95% voting record of voting with donald trump. that was really conservative. on policy issues. but the party has morphed, it is not what it used to be just five years ago, and as we move into these elections were republicans should be poised to have a really big night. they've kneecap themselves with
