12:00 am
hello. welcome to our viewers joining us here in the united states and all around the world. you are watching "cnn newsroom." i'm rosemary church. a crushing but not shocking defeat for the most forceful republican critic of former u.s. president donald trump. tuesday was primary night in wyoming, warehouse republican liz cheney conceded to her trump-backed opponent. harriet hagerman netted some
12:01 am
2/3 of the vote. this was a seat cheney won by more than 70% 2 years ago during her time. cheney, vice chair of the general sixth committee said, she could have easily one again, but that would have it embracing trump's lie after the 2020 election. that was a path she could not take, she said. wyoming voters punished her for that stands. >> this is a fight for all of us, together. i'm a conservative republican. i believe deeply in the principles and the ideals on which my party was founded. i love its history, and i love what our party has stood for, but i love my country more. >> wyoming has drawn a line in the sand that if we put you in power, you will be accountable to us. you will answer to us, and you will do what is in our best interest if you don't, we will fire you. >> cheney went on to say, no
12:02 am
american should support election denies in any position of responsibility. cnn's jens only reports from jackson, wyoming. >> reporter: cons woman liz cheney concedes in her merry race. now, looking ahead where the real work begins. in a sweeping speech outside of jackson, wyoming on tuesday night, the congresswoman talked about the threats to democracy. she talked directly about former president donald trump, saying, she could have won reelection had she followed the path of election lies. she said, she was simply not willing to do that. you have two years ago, i won this primary with 73% of the votes. i could easily have done the same again. the path was clear. but it would have required that i go along with president trump's lies about the 2020 election. it would have required that i enable his ongoing efforts to unravel our democratic system
12:03 am
and attack the foundations of our republic. that was a path i could not, and would not take. >> reporter: the speech from cheney was infused with history. she's a student of history, a historian in her own right, talking about the young and fragile democracy that the united states, indeed, has. she talked about the need to bring americans together. republicans, democrats, independents. she urged them to join her. what she did not say is join her for what exactly. she tiptoed to the line, clearly making the case, she's going to be involved in the fight ahead for democracy. didn't say in what form that would take her cheated not talk about a presidential run of her own, as many supporters at her event certainly would like her to do. she did talk about the urgency facing the country and the imperative nature of republicans and democrats and independents to come together against donald trump.she said, her greatest goal is still keeping him from the oval office. jeff so many, cnn, jackson, wyoming .
12:04 am
now to alaska, where results are coming in from several key races. alaska's primaries are unique, in that the top four finishers, regardless of party, advance to the general election. in the senate race, incumbent republican and trump critic, lisa murkowski, will be on the ballot in november. so will her republican rival, kelly schumacher, who is endorsed by the former democrat. democrat, patricia chesbro, also making the cut with kelly . a republican nick begich will join her on the ballot. a fourth spot is too early to call for both bases. the house candidates took it in a special election to fill the remainder of a late congressman's term, but none of them received 50% of the

vote.so, it will be a while before a winner is determined. alaska is in a ranked-choice voting system that will start the tabulation on august 31st. so, i want to bring back cnn political commentator and former house republican, charlie dent, as well as democratic strategist and officer, caroline heller. a warm welcome back to you both too great to see you, rosemary. >> so, as we discussed last hour, liz cheney's loss in the wyoming gop primary was no surprise, given her bold stand against donald trump in a state that is truly trump country. but, charlie, did she receive sufficient support to gain the credibility she needs to confront trump and prevent him from being president again, as she has bound to do? how might she do that? >> well, it remains to be seen whether she has deep enough support. but with liz cheney, she has identified a great need in this
12:06 am
country, to bring our politics to a better place. certainly, bring the republican party to a better place. i have always estimated, close to 30% of republicans reject trump and want a new direction for the party, for the country, and they're looking for leaders. the question is can the minority in the party grow in rank, to challenge the ascendant trump wing, which, unfortunately, has become very illiberal and, in some cases, authoritarian, leaning to concern in this country. for both parties, frankly, have drifted.the political center, center-left, the center-left of the political spectrum in the country is underrepresented. there needs to be a movement. liz cheney is one of several people who can move this country into a better place. i'm not advocating for a new party, but i'm advocating we need a movement. people like liz cheney, larry
12:07 am
hogan, kinsinger, niedermayer, others, felt the wrath of trump, and i think they're well- positioned to help carry the mantle going forward.>> yeah. that courage seems in short supply on the gop side. doesn't it? caroline, what you think liz cheney's likely next move might be, given she says, her work is not over yet, and this is the beginning? so, is she hinting at a run for resident, do you think, in 2024? how might that go if she does? >> i think she definitely hinted at that when she referenced lincoln in her speech tonight. she, obviously, has aspirations for higher office. i think she has a very limited path, because she is not welcome in the republican party, and she would be welcome in the democratic party, either, because of her hawkish neoconservative positions. i think her current goes a long way. i agree with mr. dent. the fact that she is putting her democracy and her country above her party, and is going
12:08 am
to lose her congressional seat as a result of that, is something that everyone should be celebrating who cares about democracy. what i think is right in front of her is four months of very intensive work with the house select committee. as she has said, her primary objective is to make sure that trump can't run for office again, because she has made it very clear, and the committee has made it very clear that they think there's ample evidence that he did a number of things, including inciting the violent insurrection on generous sixth. we haven't heard the last liz cheney. i'm not sure, though, that she will be an elected official, necessarily, given that she's lost her seat now. >> all right. and in alaska, we are learning that trump critic senator lisa murkowski will advance to the november election, and former republican governor sara palin, endorsed by trumm, is hoping to fill a vacant house seat. charlie, what is your reaction to what we know so far about these results in alaska? where do you think it's going?
12:09 am
>> in the case of the senate race in alaska, i think there's a general well-positioned for senator murkowski but she didn't get 50% here. i think she goes into the general election as a favorite, and because of her centrist politics, center-right politics. alaska, being a republican- leaning state, i think she will be able to capture young republicans, and a significant number of independence and democrats for the day in the general election. the fact that there was a trump- endorsed challenger to her might have helped the individual during the primary, not this recent one, but i think that's a very limited endorsement going forward but in the case of the house race, they're trying to fill the expired seed of don young, the longest member of the house, i think, before he passed.
12:10 am
i think, right now, i think it's too close to call. we don't know what's going to happen. trying to fill a seat in the special election, expired. also, to determine the nominees for the general election. the full two-year term. too close to call there. i'm not making any predictions on that right now. sarah palin, i think, is a very -- she's a very controversial figure in alaska. and so, even though she has a trump endorsement, people in alaska know her, have strong opinions one way or another. she would have a tougher time getting a crossover vote for democrats and independents at least, michalski wants to do. >> caroline, you're clearly watching sarah palin closely. what do you expect will happen with her run? >> i think it'll be a matchup with palin and portola. if she is elected, it will be a very tight race.
12:11 am
as mr. dent pointed out, sarah palin is very controversial in alaska. a recent poll finds 64% of alaskans have a negative sentiment towards sarah palin. so, it might be that she gives democrats their first win in alaska in 14 years. >> charlie, was tuesday a good night for trump? >> yeah. he defeated liz cheney. albeit, in alaska, it's unclear what the outcome is there. this was an expected outcome. donald trump has been successful in advancing candidates who support his election denial unfortunately, he's been very successful in this primary. what he has also done that was helped nominate many candidates, republican candidates, in swing states, who are perceived to be either too extreme, election deniers, or just weak candidates. somebody winning a primary is one thing. winning a general election is
12:12 am
quite another in arizona, and sylvania, michigan, and wisconsin. so, i think that really is what's occurring here. donald trump has infuriated a republicans in a state like pennsylvania, because of his endorsement in the gubernatorial mary and senate primary. against the wishes of many of the foreign establishment republicans. and so, he has made some enemies in his process. he did the same thing in georgia, where he was actually beaten in the gubernatorial secretary of state races. so, the bottom line is, you know, if republicans underperform, in the general election, a lot of the anger will be directed at donald trump if he's going to run in 2024. well, he will have more enemies than some of these other candidates. may have a better reception from a lot of republican leaders about that. >> caroline, does trump need to watch his back with liz cheney now free enough to go after
12:13 am
him? >> well, i think he needed to watch his back, regardless, because the evidence is pretty overwhelming that the january 6th committee that's in this getting him has prevented -- and of course, you have the grand jury investigation. in georgia, you have two grand juries convened in washington, d.c. to look at potential electoral slate fraud. you also have the civil and the criminal case is happening in new york. donald trump is definitely watching his back. liz cheney is playing a key role in exposing what happened on january 6th and the days leading up to that. i think the investigation of the committee is putting a lot of public pressure on the doj to act. i think we are starting to see an acceleration there. that has everything to do with liz cheney's work, as well as the work of the committee. >> caroline helman, charlie dean, thank you both for joining us. really appreciate it. >> thanks, rosemary. >> thank you.

hagerman, who won on the house ballot in the november general election. hagerman, who was endorsed by former u.s. president donald trump, has embraced his lies about the 2020 election being stolen. cheney's loss marks a big victory in trump's effort to purge perceived enemies from the party, but cheney says, she won't give up the fight to keep trump out of the oval office. >> our nation is barreling, once again, torts crisis, lawlessness, and violence. no american should support election deniers for any position of genuine responsibility, or the refusal to follow the rule of law will corrupt our future. >> donald trump's former attorney, rudy giuliani, is expected to appear before a special grand jury later today, here, in georgia. prosecutors have informed giuliani he is a target in the probe into trump's efforts to flip the 2020 presidential election results in georgia and

>> building to keep liz cheney out, but not out of office, yet, she is clippard what do you think she is planning to do? >> first of all, the magnitude of her defeat, she lost, 2-1, a massive defeat from the public and primaries we have seen. today, this is still a donald trump party. election deniers are winning nominations across the country, for governor, secretary of state, for house and senate races, and really, kind of ceding a potential crisis for the 2024 election, in terms of their willingness to accept the results, and potentially to try to tilt the results. cheney made very clear that she wants to continue the fight against that, and she views trump as an extra sensual threat to american democracy. not only trump, she said, more especially, than any other republican that i have heard in this cycle, that americans should not vote for any of the election deniers. that is the gop nominees for
12:31 am
literally hundreds of it is over well over 100 offices. so, she made clear that she wants to be a leader in an effort to rollback his influence in the party. what she didn't say, as you know, is exactly how. many of the trump skeptics in the party wanted to run for president in 2024. to bring the case against the mentally republican primary seems the most logical course, but we will have to wait and see what she does. >> yeah. certainly. of course, then in alaska, as we mentioned, we're learning that trump critic and senator lisa murkowski will advance to the november election. a former republican candidate, sarah palin, looking to fill the vacant house seat. what do you expect to happen in alaska come november? >> alaska has some unusual election rules, which are all designed, all push in the same direction, towards trying to improve their position, the position of centrists and moderates. they have what is called a
12:32 am
jumbo primary, were candidates from both parties run in the same mary, and top four finishers advanced to the general election. then, they add on to that a rinke building system. very rare in the u.s., when people identify the second and third choices. those bills are reallocated, as the candidates narrow down to the top finishers. because of that system, i think makowski is a clear favorite to win in november, even though the trump-backed challengers did very well against her. it's a real wild card in this house race, because the democrat is actually leading sarah palin in the special election through november, by about five points. and it's entirely possible that the rank-choice voters for the other republican in the race, who is more than moderate, they might refer the democrat to palin. it's not inconceivable that democrats could win the seat, at least for november, and of course, we have the other election in november, with more
12:33 am
rinke-choice building, to see what happens for the fall term. a lot of twists and turns ahead in alaska. i would bet on makowski. it would not shock me if palin was nominated this first round. >> interesting. we are also learning the fbi interviewed former white house lawyers, pats of baloney and patrick cockburn about the mar- a-lago documents, making them the most senior acts trump officials to be questioned in his criminal probe what do you make of this? >> first, as you heard on my cnn .com article this week, the striking and ominous hold of trump on the republican party is tightening, even as his legal and ethical problems are mounting. what that says, i think a clear signal, that republicans have said, in the way they have reacted to the mar-a-lago rate, that they would be even less likely to constrain his arbitrary exercise of presidential power, should he be returned to the white house, then they were during the four
12:34 am
years of his presidency in the first term. so, i think that is a very clear signal that they are sending. i think all of these investigations, that the notification to rudy giuliani, that he is a target of the georgia grand jury, all of these investigations are growing more serious and threatening for trump. yet, he is winning primary after primary with candidates who explicitly endorse his lies about the 2020 election. to me, experts that i talked to this week, you see all of these developments for the republican party morphing into something much more like what we see in turkey, or italy, a party that is enthralled to a straw man that is moving in an authoritarian direction. we just don't have a language or kind of a frame of reference in american politics to deal with what are the threats that are mounting, that cheney wants to run against but you saw, today, in a result, how
12:35 am
difficult it is to mobilize a constituency in the republican party to push back on this. this is very choppy waters ahead not for her, personally, but for american democracy, overall. >> indeed. let's look at the investigation into donald trump's efforts to flip george election results in 2020. his former attorney, rudy giuliani, forced to face the georgia grand jury. what do you expect to come out of that? >> it certainly seems like the county district attorney is driving towards indictments, in terms of trump's efforts to overturn the election there. whether that reaches all the way to trump himself, i think, is a critical question. she has been serious, both in terms of looking at, your, figures from outside the state, like giuliani, demanding testimony from lindsey graham, but also from those republicans within the state, who participated in the faye collectors scheme, which is
12:36 am
also the target, clearly, of the justice department investigation. we are heading towards momentous decisions at multiple levels of government, perhaps unprecedented indictments of a former u.s. president, and yet, the awareness and the likelihood that even such an indictment would not invalidate him for many, perhaps, most republicans boaters, is not inconceivable. donald trump can be both under indictment, and the front runner for the republican presidential nomination in 2024, which is a situation that, again, you think of italy, when you hear that kind of prospect. but that is what we are headed towards. that is the kind of thing that cheney is trying to put herself in the way of. you know, and it's not going to be easy to dislodge a whole other party. that's clearly the take away for the her. >> many thanks, john, joining us from los angeles. >> thank you. u.s. first lady joe biden has covid. it is the first time she's
