>> there is nothing that they cannot accomplish. hello and welcome. viewers joining us in and around the world. just ahead, a murder investigation in moscow. after a car bomb killed the dollar of the russian president spiritual guide to the ukraine invasion. from marlago to january sixth. and a family business dealing.
11:01 pm
what a new poll shows about the tolerance of all of these trump investigations. an abortion ban is set to go in effect in three more states this week. we will tell you which ones those are and how the activists are preparing to fight back. thank you for joining us. there is a murder investigation underway after a car bomb killed the daughter of a prominent supporter of president vladimir putin. dario to gain a died saturday night after the vehicle she was driving exploded according to the russian news agency task. the investigation has revealed that 400 grams of tnt was used. the russian investigative committee is saying they believe someone ordered and planned this blast. she is the daughter of alexander good dugan who is
11:02 pm
being called the spiritual guide to the russian invasion of ukraine. a russian foreign ministry official has implied that ukraine may be responsible. but ukraine is strongly denying the claim. scott's, what we learning about this? >> given the purported influence of alexander dugan and also his daughter dario do ghana. there is going to be enormous interest in getting to the bottom of exactly who planted this bomb. he did detonate on saturday evening. you mentioned investigators this is according to russian media citing investigator saying that the bomb was planted on the driver side underneath the toyota land cruiser. they are also saying there were some 400 grams of tnt inside the explosive device. the reason why she was outside of moscow to begin with is that
11:03 pm
she was attending a festival called traditions which sort of has discussions around cultural trends and things of that nature. this is about 50 kilometers or so west of moscow. she been in a small village two or three kilometers away and this is where she would've gone on to moscow according to a family friend and that's when it actually detonated. to be clear there are no indications at this point as to who or what may have been responsible. but the blame game started very early on. it first came from the head of the people's republic who blame tereus of the ukrainian regime with no evidence that it was then repeated by the foreign ministry spokesperson as you mentioned saying that if the trace is confirmed as it was voiced by the head of the dpr it must be verified by the competent authorities and then we should talk about the policy of state terrorism implemented
11:04 pm
by the t regine. there've been plenty of facts implement it over the years from political calls to leadership and participation of ukrainian state structures in crime. the response from the ukraine was also quite swift. it came from halo portal lacks the ukrainian journalist in an interview. he is the advisor and said that ukraine definitely has nothing to do with this because we are not a criminal state with the russian federation is an even more so we are not a terrorist state. the term terrorist state is something that has been leveled at the russian government repeatedly by the ukrainians. particularly after civilian targets have been hit repeatedly over the course of this war. the russians are obviously trying to repurpose it to describe ukrainians as well. ukrainian denial does stand out because when there have been explosions or strikes on russian territory typically military installations they have not claimed responsibility. they've not even acknowledged that the strikes actually took
11:05 pm
place. the response was quite swift. as to who may be here adam schiff was asked about the stress yesterday. he said there are so many factions and groups within russia it could've been responsible that anything is possible. he said he hopes that this was in fact a russian internal affair and that it was nothing emanating from the ukraine. he hopes that the representations have been correct. one other thing to mention it could be total coincidence but it is worth mentioning that this explosion happened to take place two years to the day of the poisoning of a prominent russian opposition leader alexi in a volley. scott mclean is joining us from london bring us the very latest on the story and we appreciate it. the leaders of britain,

donald trump says she has no regrets sacrificing your political career to defend democracy against the former president. liz cheney is days removed from a crushing defeat in her reelection bid in wyoming. she became a top target of trump and his supporters after voting for his impeachment and is now serving as the vice chair of the january six committee. they told abc news that her greater concern is the direction of the republican party. >> i have no regrets. i feel sad about where my party is. i feel sad about how too many of my colleagues responded to what is a great moral test and challenge of our time. a great moment to determine whether or not people are going to stand up on behalf of democracy and our republic. >> she went on to say that she is now focused on keeping
11:08 pm
donald trump out of office. a majority of u.s. voters say that the various ongoing investigations into alleged wrongdoing by the former president should continue. according to a new nbc poll nearly 6 out of 10 voters back this investigation. the poll was conducted following the fbi search of the florida home. professor of law at loyola university and the host of passing judgment. i always good to have you with us. so that poll that we just mentioned found 57% of registered voters want investigations into the former president to continue compared to 40% who do not. and one of those is the georgia election meddling probe. but lindsey graham was set to
11:09 pm
testify this week in relation to that investigation was granted a temporary reprieve by an appeals court. so what could this potentially mean? >> a delay potentially for months for the testimony. when people ask me where do i think that the former president could have the most immediate legal exposure? when could he be indicted? the soonest when it comes to these investigations i always pointed to georgia. because in that case we have a phone call. we have evidence. we have witness testimony. and it's pretty clear to all of us when we hear the phone call and he says just find me almost 12,000 votes what he is asking for. lindsey graham was part of that story. what he has said is i don't have to testify. i have total immunity from the subpoena because of the speech and debate clause. basically protects sitting lawmakers from being subject to subpoenas for issues that fall
11:10 pm
within the legislative duties. this has gone up and down between the trial court and court of appeals. but what the court of appeal said was to go back to the trial court. try to figure out if some of this information is covered by the speech and debate clause and some of it is not. the bottom line is that is not great for the investigation because it could take months. >> republicans are demanding the release of the affidavit that authorized the recent search of the home. but it will be needs a a will need to be redacted before the release. and the department of justice is preparing for the hearing with the florida magistrate this week on what can and cannot go public. what will they likely decide? and if it is too heavily redacted that run the risk of fueling more conspiracy theories? >> i feel like there will be conspiracy theories either way. but if we see just enough information so everything is
11:11 pm
open to interpretation it could absolutely lead to even more disinformation. what is interesting, as you mentioned there are a lot of republicans calling for the release of the affidavit. but the former president will he has called for the release outside of court he did not join media organizations saying let's release this affidavit. so it does matter what you say out of court as opposed in court. in terms of what the judge is going to look at the department of justice has been asked to go line by line to see anything that they need to redact and explain why to the judge. the judge will then determine whether it is within the national security interest or if it is legitimate to protect witnesses or a roadmap for the investigation. at that point it's probably not over. this is an order that can be appealed to the chief judge in
11:12 pm
that district. so it could take a while before we have any answer on what is redacted and what is not. and frankly we see anything other than the word hand, the and or. >> while all of this is happening donald trump is struggling to attain and hire his top-tier lawyers. what is that significance? >> a lot of people in the republican establishment in the legal establishment have seen that there are serious climate client control issues. i feel he will retain counsel but let's remember that counsel also has official duties so they cannot misrepresent the court and they have to only say what is true. they can't make things up. and that's part of the reason why particular when we talk about the post election litigation acid focus on what the former president and his representatives say outside of court versus what they say in court under oath. i think people look at the
11:13 pm
former president as a potential client and again they see some serious climate client control issues. >> while republicans are doubling down in conspiracy theories, the democrats are racking up legislative and policy victories as the fewer prices drop joe biden's approval rating however is still rather low. around 42%. what might this mean for the big midterm elections? >> we are having this conversation in august. if the midterms were held right now then joe biden does not have been tickly big coattails. there still about three months and i think the last two things that you mentioned are probably the most significant. it's the economy and the fuel prices. it's not really fair because presidents don't control the economy. there are so many factors that go into this but i think if they are paying less at the gas pump in the grocery store
11:14 pm
that's going to be good for the party in power which is the democrats. if there is a major bombshell when it comes to january six committee i don't know if that moves the deep needle that much. i things that is just where we are with american politics today. those recent legislative victories cover a number of issues from climate change to a major expansion of veterans benefits. while inflation remains high the gas prices have now dipped to a national average of $3.90. $.50 less than one month ago. jobless claims also fell slightly last week and despite that a new nbc news poll shows 68% of voters think the u.s. is in an economic recession. one economic advisor is looking
11:15 pm
to ease those concerns. >> one of those things that we need to do whether it's the strongest labor market in a generation is to make sure that we are working hard for them to achieve the kind of results that we've begun to see. a little crack of lightning and no victory laps. >> this week we will be getting the second quarter gdp revision and reports on new home sales and weekly jobless claims. 140 asylum-seekers reached new york city early sunday in what officials are calling the largest single day arrival of migrants from texas to date. three buses carried individuals and families with children on their roughly 1700 mile trip. asylum-seekers were met by representatives from city agencies and volunteers who

what is being done to help them and give these women and girls a legal path to this healthcare procedure? >> thank you for having me. the very first thing that we need to talk about has to do with the state of florida. and the prosecutor there. andrew warren was suspended or fired even i think from his job by the governor. because he spoke out and said that he was not going to prosecute people who are violating the law. those who were coming forward he was not going to prosecute those providing abortions. and it's a very interesting approach. because what has happened now is he has made such a mess that andrew warren is now in federal court suing under the first amendment saying he has a right to speak out and say that the law should not be enforced.
11:32 pm
that women should have the right to have an abortion. and that is an interesting issue because it raises the first amendment question saying that you have the right to an abortion and he has the rights to not prosecute. there are places where there so many other serious crimes that are being committed and they simply don't have the person power to prosecute them. there are other places like michigan and georgia that literally do not want to prosecute in certain counties. doctors or women getting abortions. >> and a hearing is set as we mentioned today. the near total ban on abortion in idaho is scheduled to begin on august 25th. tennessee human life protection act which prohibits abortion will take effect as well. and on friday oklahoma's abortion ban takes effect. as more u.s. states impose restrictions on access to abortions, more people as you
11:33 pm
pointed out including elected officials are now vowing to either break the law or not enforce it in some cases. so, you mention the prosecutor in florida as we did at the start so let's look at that as a possibility for pushing back on this. they clearly will have some legal ramifications however? >> absolutely. the most important thing is that you can't force a prosecutor to bring a case. they have a lot of discretion to decide what is best for their constituents. voters elected this man to his position as prosecutor. and his statement is that you should not have rhonda sanchez coming after him saying that he's going to be fired. there's another part of the lawsuit called cold toronto which means that he's basically overstepped his authority.
11:34 pm
he wants to know by what authority is he able to be fired when the voters elected to this position? and you know it's not just there in the florida but there are valid reasons for saying elected officials should not be forced to prosecute certain kinds of crimes that they don't think they should. especially if there are other priorities. for example i can mention this, in georgia there are das in atlanta and a gust of the have other priorities. they don't want to prosecute women or providers for getting or providing an abortion. they want to go after serious violent crimes and they have a right to make that a priority. >> it is an extra in a situation. for a lot of these very vulnerable women and girls trying to figure all of this out along with a whole lot of other people across the country. thank you so much for trying to sort this out for us. we appreciate it. the prime minister of finland is getting some support after coming under fire from
