to say good-bye. >> we're canadian and the queen was also the head of state of canada and we're here to pay our respects after 70 years of service. >> just to be a part of history and that moment. i'm here with my mum. it's quite an experience. >> we've all come by ourselves. we've had a fantastic night. so, yeah, it's been great. >> my mom went to diana's when she was young. she wanted us to have the experience. >> they've come to say good-bye to the only monarch most of them have everyone known. nada, give us a sense of what it been like talking to the people. it's just remarkable to see these long lines and people really just in uplifted spirits.

>> reporter: absolutely. it is remarkable to see just how many people have come to london to pay their respects to late monarch queen elizabeth ii, thousands taking part, many waiting overnight in the cold waiting hours and hours for a chance to say their good-bye. many are pitching up tents outside where the queen is lying in state for their chance to see the funeral on monday. there will be that procession of the queen's coffin traveling to westminster abbey. and that will be followed on foot by the new monarch, king charles iii and other members of the family. this is an historic moment, an opportunity that many did not want to miss.

what time did you get there to join the queue? >> i think we got there about half past 10 last night. so it was about 12 hours. >> and you've been waiting all night. you've just left. what was the experience like for you? >> well, i think it was moving because the queen's christian faith is as important to her as it was to us. that's particularly significant for us and reminds us of the even greater monarch, the lord jesus. >> reporter: of course, you've been waiting all night. it has been pretty cold. how did you cope overnight? >> it was a really good vibe. everybody was there to support each other, there was some sing-alongs along the way. everybody sort of kept morale up. it was lovely to be together with everybody in that way. >> and will you be watching the funeral? will you be coming here? >> i think we're going to watch

it. we're going to have a party with people from our church. we're going to come together and have breakfast and sit and watch it. looking forward to it. >> and that really is the message we've been hearing. it is a sense of community really. we're seeing crowd gathering together, many meeting new people along the way, making new friend. a lot of people pitching tents. it will be a moment that you can't compare with many other. we're seeing around 2,000 people attending the funeral, hundreds of foreign dignitaries ascending on london. several will be having an audience will king charles iii later today. it really is an historic moment. >> the queen at least for one last time bringing part of the world together. nada bashir, thank you very much.

2,000 guests attending the state funeral for queen elizabeth at westminster abbey. no official guest list has been unveiled just yet but the president is expected to be one of many world leaders to be on hand for those ceremonies, including the french president macron and also the president of south korea. and a bilat reral meeting will take place in the u.s. they last met queen elizabeth at windsor castle in june of 2021. the queen hosted the president

brexit, which is frankly a catastrophe, the lockdown. people are in that queue, amber, for a lot of reasons. you can feel it when you go around them. you can feel the solemnity, you can feel people meditating on their own stuff that happened to them, the friendship. all of it is just massive. i have never seen anything like this. i mean, total respect to all these people who have actually endured this because it cold here right now and rainy and these people have just stood there and been there. it's incredible. >> endurance. and people are making new alliances and friends as well. also, as we marvel at this historic moment and unprecedented gathering that we're seeing not only on the streets but world leaders and

dignitaries. this is going to be the first of its kind in terms of the sheer number of world leaders and foreign dignitaries that will be together in one space. >> amber, this is, if i can say it, a security nightmare. the british security is unarmed. they've had to rope in security from other cities. there's a ring of steel around this town. we don't know what's going to go down. like you say, there's never been a gathering like this before. scotland yard has got to be prepared for this as much as they can be. so it's in the back of everybody's mind but it's shaky. >> i think what's amusing to a lot -- i guess the billions around the world who will be tuning in is this crowded shuttle bus or buses for the

dignitaries. president biden will be traveling in the beast, his own armored car, and a few others will be granted a right ride. but even the emperor of japan, they rarely travel, if ever, for state funerals like this. they will be in a crowded shuttle bus as well. just talk about i guess the optics of that moment. >> well, the thing is you have to remember that again what i was saying about the security thing. so they're trying to keep everybody together. they can't have like corteges of cars and hangers on. they can deal with president biden. he's got to be in his vehicle. but the kings and queens and what have you, they're going to be on the bus. london streets are narrow.

they've been expanded a bit but their essence is quite narrow. police have probably got snipers on the top of the buildings just to, like, check things. the police have to be able to contain what they possibly can. this is what everybody is crossing their fingers about. they've never had nanything lik this ever. >> boris sanchez will have more on this. can you imagine being the bus driver? >> all these people are on your bus. so it wild. >> everyone sit down, be quiet, i'm in charge. >> but also doing the sightseeing. saying this is this, this is this. so it's incredible. >> incredible stuff.

directly. fortunately nobody on the ground was hurt. yikes. >> there's got to be a way to keep these birds away. you nope this is a possibility every time we take off in a commercial plane. >> i'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. it's crazy. >> california as mosquito wildfire has opinion burning for two weeks and has grown into the largest blaze this year. >> firefighters are hoping that rain in the forecast will hope slow the fire's spread. >> reporter: firefighters are expected to make significant progress thanks to the rain. that rain is forecasted between sunday and monday and they feel like they've already made some progress and will be able to continue to do that over the next couple of days because of the rain and because of the lower temperatures. unfortunately, this fire has already destroyed more than 70,000 acres. there are assessment teams out there trying to figure out how

many structures have been destroyed and thankfully some evacuation orders being lifted. they are telling people to be very careful and pay attention to those evacuation orders. some people will likely be able to return to their homes. the other aspect of all of this is that big picture. what experts are saying is that the rain could slow the ongoing fire season. it will not put an end to it because temperatures are going to continue to rise, even later on this the week, temperatures are predicted to be higher. but they do believe this sort of will slow down what's going on in california at the moment. experts do say we have to pay attention later on in september and october because there is always a possibility for more fires as california is going through this ongoing drought and everything is just so dry. cnn, los angeles. >> new york city's public school

taiwan's president has activated the island's central emergency operation center to respond to a 9.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the southeastern part of the island earlier today. so far rescue personnel and over a hundred soldiers have been deployed in response after the earthquake caused significant damage. >> again, it was a 6.9 magnitude quake and trapped four people under a collapsed building, toppled a bridge, derailed a train. will ripley is following the story. what do we know?

>> reporter: we get live earthquakes in taiwan, hundreds of those you can feel. this one today and i'm in taipei, which is 200 miles from the epicenter, it was the strongest that i've felt. friends of mine who have grown up here said they don't remember feeling this many earthquakes in this period of time with this intensity. there was a 6 point earthquake that we felt was the main shake. and then several hours ago the 6.9 hit and it was clear this was the biggest one i've experienced since being here in taiwan. and these are these aftershocks over and over again that you can feel. it's almost like you're sea sick or have motion sickness. every few minutes it feels like the ground starts moving.

there were two aftershocks that hit during the live shot, three more that hit as i was trying to type up a tweet to put the video out. it an unnerving feeling. there are no reports of any serious injuries. the four people trapped in a building when a 7-11 chanced. we -- collapsed. we're still looking at a school gymnasium that collapsed. and they are saying to be prepared for more shaking in the days to come. >> thank you so much. soon tropical storm fiona is expected to become a full hurricane battling the islands

with floods and rain. >> the virgin islands are already seeing the conditions. where is it now and where is it headed? >> it really hasn't moved all that much from yesterday. it's not a very fast-moving storm. the map looks very similar to what it did yesterday. but we're starting to see a lot of those outer bands begin to surge off toward the west. puerto rico, the virgin islands seeing a lot more activity this morning than yesterday. winds gusting up to 75 miles per hour, sustained winds 60 miles per hour. we anticipate it will be a category i hurricane by this afternoon. that's why you have hurricane warnings in red and watches in the pink color in preparation for that strengthening to take place. it is forecast to become a

. some 30 heads of state, as well as more than 500 dignitaries from around the world are going to be in attendance for the queen's funeral tomorrow, including president joe biden and first lady jill biden. some say it will be the single biggest operation in london as police history. joining us to discuss the security aspects of the state funeral is former secret service agent jonathan whackrell. not long ago we had bonnie

greer, a top official and she said this is going to be a security nightmare. do you agree? >> this is going to be a security challenge. it's one of the largest mobilizations of security in london's history. they are charged with three competing prioritin the safety and security of the funeral ceremonies itself and the almost 2 million people that are descending upon london to mourn. they also have to coordinate the security for the 30 heads of state that will be attending the event, as well as the over 500 dignitaries that are planning on attending. and finally, they have to continue to maintain the safety and security of city of london at large. gi again, it's one of the largest cities of the world and they have to maintain civil order and address any criminal activity that arises.

all of this combined creates a significant challenge to the metropolitan police service. however, the advantage is they have been planning for decades and modernizes to address the changing threat dynamics. >> it's going to demand an immense amount of resources to say the least, too, right? i'm wondering what you think of the arrangements for president biden, all that goes into that with so many people crowded into london, not just people wanting to see the queen but also some 500 dignitaries from around the world. that's a lot of security details. >> it really is. and, you know, oftentimes when i was a secret service agent, we would have these large-scale events such as the u.n. general assembly, the inauguration. and the challenge that law enforcement in britain is facing is the same that the secret service has when they're

coordinating events is that sometimes the convergence of a lot of law enforcement and security entities can actually, you know, be detractive, not additive to the security plan. finding the right balance of how to aemploy security measures in the right area is almost an art, not a science here. you have to address the threat environment and basically put those security forces to address what you know is the most pressing needs. and for the president of the united states coming in, if it was a regular visit, you'd have a lot of assets and resources put towards the protection of the president but there are 30 other heads of state. the allocation is really thin right now and presents a
