the contributing editor of -- good evening everyone. let's see what we have to talk about. we have so much news. john, we start with you. i want to ask about your times where don trump was warned by eric herschmann. late last year, i think it's face legal liability if he did not return the materials that he had taken when he left office. there's still so much that we don't know about. >> we keep hearing more but it's all the piece right. it's so unvarnished and his interviews with the generous committee. tell the president, quite a new york times reporting, last year. the ex president, to be clear. that if he didn't return these documents it is hoarding in mar-a-lago that he could face a serious legal jeopardy. what that does is oppose of the excuse that there is no way trump knew where he was living in tempted no fantasyland. because he was told by one was deputy white house cancels that there was legal jeopardy that he had to return to documents, it was serious, and that he willfully ignored it.

>> but he and his folks were saying they're complying with everything. >> that's a lie. >> it's a lie. we know from the documents of his lawyers, he said he turned over everything. but he didn't. he held on to other documents. >> it sounds like they're at least trying to obstruct justice. they knew that they were asking for some sort of documentation, and they weren't willing to hand it over. whether he believed he had declassified and whether you have the right to it is another story. but they weren't fully open with what they had. >> do you believe it was a lie carrot? i do, and i think to that 0.1 of the things that we saw today is that trump is refusing to comply with the questions from the special master in the email investigation. or in the document investigation. what is interesting about that as that one of the things that he is refusing to answer is whether he actually declassified documents. and thus, they would have been his to hold on to. of course, that is not actually what the doj subpoena called

for in the first place. they called for documents with classification markings. regardless of whether they're accurate or not. >> that is all distraction? right >> what is interesting is that this was sort of trump being trump. which is he asked for a special master. gets the special master. and then refuses to cooperate with the special master. and one of the oddities about this, we talked about this 50 day off in the mid term. is that it is going to be thanks to donald trump and donald trump alone that we talk about this every day between now in the midterms. -- long after the conversation trump returned 15 boxes. including hundred 84 classified documents in january but he still holding on to a lot included the documents with the highest security classification so want to see that or can we talk about this a lot. we are 50 days out until election day and republicans want to talk about what. immigration, inflation?

democrats will talk about the roe decision. so much is at stake here. and the outcome could really determine what the country faces over the next few years. how do you see it? >> i think that they are running two different campaigns right now. but it is a matter, i think, geography and location. i think if you are living on the border, and trump -- in immigration is a huge issue for people living on the border. economy is a pop could push issue that goes across the boat. i think if you are a woman you might be more concerned about the role issue. i think it really targets voters in different places. and it may not necessarily divide along partisan lines in this election. i think it depends on what you value. if you think that republicans are better handling the economy, education, and crime. you may vote for republican thing that democrats are better handling health care, abortion,

climate, you vote that way. >> the additional thing i think that that the priorities is democracy. you know. but typically it, democracy is not about the way people are saying. it is one of the things -- typically, the pendulum swing of him bittermann lectures gonna swing in the opposite way. everybody knows it. that's of the gravitational pull us. but by donald trump reasserted himself into politics he's become his worst nightmare. because he makes it not a referendum on the biden administration get a choice election between democrats and donald trump. and so, republicans absolutely will get energy from embracing crime inflation. democrats have the overreach of roe. they've got democracy. they got other issues like health care and the environment. so this is going to be much closer than a typical determination. >> when you say crime, inflation, those things appeal to democrats and republicans. then you also, to, have the issue of roe v rate. which also appeals to republicans as well. and democrats. so these are issues that mean

something to both parties. i think one of the challenges here, of course, as gianna saying. there are two republican parties fighting two very different messages this fall. that you have kevin mccarthy, and mitch mcconnell, they want to talk about inflation. they will talk about the economy. they will talk about gas prices. they will talk when immigration. donald trump is going to be out there every day trying to pull the party more into his own view. and this is where you actually have, in some ways, ron desantis and martha's vineyard migration stunt sort of guys how they're out marketing each other. and a way that i think is going to be one of the major things between now in november. >> if you look what happens want to satisfy got the standing vision from gop voters about the martha's vineyard issue. does this tell you where republicans are right now and i

mean is he trying to out-maga trump? >> i think it is certainly effective in terms of making immigration come to the forefront. now we have the story in the new york times saying that 2 million people were apprehended at the port of the highest number during the biden ministration. and we are talking to immigration, again, and whether we like it or not rhonda santas did that. i push back on. that he's obviously barring a plan where they're doing the actual busing. he elevated trying to out-troll trump and desantis. i think is a major political backlash with ronda santas. it's not a conservative congress -- at the last cars assigned thrown up that said unite to win. there's not any evidence of that right now. but the fact that these were refugees from a left-wing dictatorship, venezuela predominantly. i think it can actually have unintended consequences for on desantis back home, and nationally. because it might ease the clarity that a lot of florida republicans half when it came to places like the majority.

they're using refugees from the majority in as political pawns. >> he's not talking about democrats or republicans united. he's talking to unite behind the big lie. >> i don't think that's uniting message for the republican party either. >> i gotta talk to about this because of present biden this weekend telling that his intention to present that is not so sure about whether -- it wasn't a firm decision. do you think this is more instability when he needs to make up his mind when it comes to democratic party? >> no. i think all this does is make all of the potential 2024 rivals get even more juice up and ready to talk to their donors and builder networks. i have known, all along, from white house officials it there's always never a bag plan with joe biden. joe discussion. their family has a lot of stake

about hunter biden under the microscope. got ashley biden at the microscope. he's going to be 87 at the end of his term. there are lot of different factors. but still, if you had to run for a whole term. and i think this was never a big foregone conclusion. it was always going to be taking his time on this. definitely right before deciding to this and 15 that he wasn't going to run because of the death of his son. his family is also been a really big part of this. >> i think she's exactly right there. but i think that we overprescribed and sort of the political citizen but it is really joe biden being joe biden. and in 2016, and that election. he made a very personal decision not to run. because he just didn't feel like his art was in it. and i think we're sort of waiting to see that same moment. whether he feels like his heart isn't it. by the way, one of the things he's been very clear about is that he can beat donald trump.

he has beaten donald trump. and if he feels that the republican party is tacking back to donald trump, that is going to keep him in the fight longer. >> you are reading your mind. because the polls show now that he's the only person right now in the democratic party and there's no one else really out there who can beat donald trump. so we are going to see. >> people get upset, especially democrats, we talk about biden's age, the stamina, and all that. he said in 2020. i know my age is a factor. and democrats get help and out of shape me talk about joe biden. >> he said bridge. to a new generation. this was a bridging moment. it ain't just a fact. now -- >> they'll be ageist. oh but he has said it himself. now, obviously, for most present the fact of reelection is a given. it is not for joe biden. that said i don't think it's surprising that he's announcing it before the midterms.

another lot of democrats looking at their own contingency plans for the result. -- it is politically smart what he's doing. everyone stay there reading it whatever his answers. >> i do think the fact that they're channeling his campaign is said to form his own campaign is actually suggests that they are preparing for the fact that he may not run. that this might be real more than a political calculation and they are prepared for multiple candidates like inside into the dnc apparatus. we will know when every decides. he will tell us. >> thank you all i appreciate it. >> a texas sheriff says migrants were exploited, quote, exploited and hoodwinked when they're transported to martha's vineyard. that is not the only one calling for an investigation of what happened to so many desperate men and women and children. the story of cnn's miguel marquez is there.

growing calls for federal investigation after migrants were shipped to northern blue states by republican governor, ron desantis, and greg abbott. democrats and activists are accusing republican governors of using these immigrants as pawns and a political stunt. alleging that they were lured on the buses and planes, with bogus promises of aid. only to leave them stranded and the texas sheriff has announced an investigation into the flight that brought 48 migrants to martha's vineyard. watch. >> i believe that they were preyed upon. somebody came from out of state, preyed upon these people. lord them with promises of a better life, which is what they were absolutely looking for. and with the knowledge that they were going to cling to whatever hope they could get. that they could be offered for a better life. to just be exploited and

hoodwinked into making this trip to florida, and that onward to martha's vineyard. for what i believe to be nothing more than political posturing. to make a point. >> so exploded hoodwink, he says. joining us now is delivered on this. he represents martha's vineyard. thank you representative, we appreciate you joining. so representative i want to ask you. this texas sheriff is alleging that a migrant was paid to recruit people from this flight. from a resource center in san antonio, who are then, quote, lowered to a hotel before being flown first to florida and then to massachusetts. what is your reaction to this? well look i stand with the sheriff. i agree with him. there needs to be an investigation. we have been calling on the department of justice to do just that. not only is this a more the criminal thing to do but there are clear legal implications there around human trafficking, fraud, deprivation of the party,

and this needs to be looked at. so we are calling on the u.s. department of justice to open an investigation a from a top tier u.s. attorney here and she is willing to push on this as well. and call for accountability. i was at the facility, today, roy talked to several individuals. and they recounted their story to me and it is true that there was a woman around who people up. under false promises, underlies, bringing them to a hotel. weather was a central hotel where they were staging people and keeping them there. to then go on these flights. and then light them about where they were going. it seems like not a single person was told that they were going to martha's vineyard. >> let's talk a little bit more about that. these venezuelan families were saying that. they want to martha's vineyard looking into a brochure given to them that promised cash, and

housing assistance under false pretenses. because the program reference does not apply to asylum seekers. what questions does that raise for you? >> well, look, again. this is a criminal act. in my mind. and it needs to be investigated. at these people were lied to. and, think about, this i talked to an individual today who walked over 60 days just to get to the border. he was fleeing from violence. fleeing from gangs. and fleeing from a breakdown of his home country. only to be met, not with compassion, but with a governor's administration that wanted to use him as a political pawn. and like to him, putting him on an airplane. and then shipped him off like cattle. with 49 other people, to a place where he didn't know where he was going. that is incredibly cruel and

depraved thing to do. to use these people as political pawns. just so tucker carlson, just a governor desantis and tucker carlson can talk about being tough on immigration. at the end of the day, these are families, these are children. there is nothing tough about using children and families as political pawns. governor desantis is an incredibly weak human being. what is strong is how our community rallied together to come together to support these people. at a moments notice. i believe this community represent the best in this country. >> i got a representative, these are republicans who insist that known as being transport against the will. they're not making decisions based on all supported pretenses. do you buy that? >> well, i can tell you as a fact, that the migrants would call that out as complete bs. they told me that they were lied to. they told me that they were

deceived. they told me, today. that when they got off the plane and realize they were on an island and pulled it up on the phone. it's all there was water surrounding the. they were terrified. they had no idea where they were. and, they did not know -- not a single one of them do they were going to martha's vineyard. so what these governors are saying is a lie. and what these migrants are saying is the truth. and we need to be respectful for them. and we need to show them the compassionate care that any human being deserves. that is what we're doing here in massachusetts. >> as i understand you're one of the voices calling for a federal investigation into governor desantis and others. about what they had been doing. i want to keep us updated on that. thank you so much, appreciate representative. >> pleasure, thank you don. rescuers are scrambling tonight for hurricane fiona slamming into puerto rico. at least two are dead from the storm live in san juan. we're gonna be the right after

hurricane fiona is still battering puerto rico with heavy rain and life-threatening flash flooding. teams are working to rescue those trapped by a theme official who told cnn that the catastrophic rain is making it challenging at this hour, at least two people have died and hundreds of thousands are without power. cnn's leyla santiago has the latest from san juan. >> almost the entire island of puerto rico remains in the dark after hurricane fiona slammed into the southwestern coast of

the island sunday afternoon. pounding rainfall causing catastrophic mudslides and flooding, to storm coming just as parts of the island were finally recovering from hurricane maria's destruction five years ago. >> it has been rough. who had me and just working to get back in the neighborhood. getting back from maria, where everything was destroyed. restaurants, houses, everything was destroyed. and we just heard all the way back. but we just headway back. a lot of people, more than maria lost their houses. they lost everything on their houses because of it. >> this is where the national guard had a communist few people. still a lot of flooding, i could hear generators powering the home. it is still pouring down with rain. neighbors are looking out. wondering exactly what will come next as hurricane fiona, the remnants of it, continue to demolish this area. >> the family rescued overnight,

now safely in a shelter. >> she says this was worse than maria. >> she's pointing out that they've already been underwater for 24 hours and the rain is still coming down. so she is concerned about the 2500 families that she says are impacted by this year. >> about 1000 people rescued from floodwaters, hundreds more rescued as still underway as emergency responders try to navigate through heavily drenched areas. the inter part of the island, 25-year-old -- rodriguez watch this bridge come apart in just minutes and wash down the river. on the west side of the island, rain falls falling iguana hill river in -- suppressing its previous record high at 28.59 feet set during hurricane maria. now gauging to over 29 feet the national weather service said. well if you hospitals have regained power, emergency workers are racing to get electricity back to the island. >> it takes a long to get

things back up because so many the systems are connected. and a few of the main lines go through the hills there. if those mainlined get them as they don't have the ability to get to the other sections up and running. >> sunday morning, president joe biden approving an emergency declaration for puerto rico that their crisis all emergency measures needed including -- >> their standard responders on the ground from fema working hand in glove the commonwealth and average sea management structure. >> tonight, don, we are back inside one. where some of the power has been restored. but i've checked in with families of the entire part of the island, that southern coast that was really impacted by hurricane fiona. it continues to be denied. they tell me they are in the dark and it is not just power that is the issue. 60%. more than 60% of customers without water. on this island. as well. and take note of the timing, it really speaks to the fair as well. tomorrow will mark five years

queen elizabeth ii laid to rest and king george to six memorial

chapel in the queen state funeral took place early this morning. as the sun and heir, king charles iii, was joined by the rest of the royal family and leaders from across the world. among many leaders in attendance i was mourning happy honoring the 70-year reign. president joe biden, the first lady jill biden, you could see her on the screen. all in the state funeral the queens hearse was taken past buckingham palace. one last time. staff they're offering their advice. the day ceremony offered really an intimate and personal look at the royal family on one of their saddest days. the king, visibly emotional. william, the prince of wales, and harry the duke of sussex seen side by side. once again. the queen's great grandchildren, prince and princess charlotte both in attendance.

george is now second in line to the throne after his father. waiting patiently outside windsor castle with the queen's coffin, her beloved corgis, sandy and mick. look at those little cuties. adorable. also waiting, the queen's favorite horse. thousands lined the long walk at the entrance to windsor castle. it was the last chance for the public to see the queen before the intimate committal service. at st. george chapel. ♪ ♪ ♪ at the service the queen's personal piper paid for her one last time as she was reunited with her husband, prince philip. listen. joining me now, karen pearce. she's a uk ambassador to the --

ambassador, i should say, excuse me. how are you? >> no, i was, this was very interesting. throughout the week it has been possible to hold it together. but various public representational reasons. and even this morning, we had an event at the embassy. watching the funeral, and even then, but tonight i've been at a dinner which unexpectedly had a tribute to the queen. you have a very kindly had a tribute to the queen. i think the unexpected nature of that just brings home, and how many context people remember her. so thank you for your tribute. >> thank you. they hit you unexpectedly? >> i do i'd be moved, but i could kind of steal myself. the unexpected side, i was her majesty's ambassador. i am incredibly proud to have

served her. and now his majesty's ambassador. and i will give him all my devotion and duty. what is today ceremonial wouldn't say -- what does it mean to say goodbye to the queen? what does it mean to you and the uk? what does it mean? but i >> think it's enormous as your commentary as shown. and norma's, historic, and historical elements of this. so many of the ceremonies go back to the 11th and 13th century. some of the costumes go back to that period and i think what you see and that was the whole panel of what the united kingdom has had for a millennium. and i think that is quite in unusual thing to be able to see. very moving in and of itself. and i think it was the state

paying tribute to the queen. but also its people. it is the heroic on the one side. and the human on the other. >> those on the human? they threw flowers at the coffin. but also, the number of americans. who have come to the embassy here in washington. from the precedent down. to pay tribute to leap hours and to leave these messages. people talk about the special relationship, actually, they should've been there to see some of these ordinary people leaving their own tributes. we are incredibly grateful and it is very moving. windsor was really special to her and it was part of the emotional passing of the queen. what role do you think the new king, controls is no plan the world stage? what would you expect from him? >> i think, first of, all we heard him re-pledge his duty

and service to the people of the uk. but also, the people of the commonwealth. which goes right across the world. 56 mentions. he was chosen to succeed the queen as head of the commonwealth a few years ago. i think that is very important. as many people have said, he has been waiting for a while. this means he is very knowledgeable about world affairs. so i've got the pledge talking to him about the baltics and about afghanistan. he is very good with world leaders. and he's very good at going to the heart of the matter. he has a number of issues like, climate, which is passionately interested in. >> let me ask you because you've got a new prime minister. you've got a new king. i don't know if tumultuous but this is an unprecedented transition. what is your message? >> it's not for me, i've taken trucks from him i don't give a message us. but it is interesting, as you

said. >> what you want the world to know about this? >> this is a new era for britain. it is not just britain. the queen has been on the throne for seven decades and she has come to define, as a constant, the post-second world war era. and all this, good and bad. as countries changed from the past to the future. she has been there. and now, i think, everybody feels but -- we feel that we are in a new era. if king charles iii as a symbol of that. as you say, we have this trust, you prime minister i think they will help each other. they will see each other every week. there are enormous challenges facing all countries. not just britain in this part of the 21st century. whether they are climate or immigration or energy. they will help each other deal with it. >> i think this coming to power for both them at the same time
