good morning. buenos dias and welcome to your "new day." i'm boris sanchez. >> good morning to you, boris. i'm amara walker. right now we're tracking two major storms, fiona hitting canada's coast, right now bringing with it dangerous winds, heavy rain, and a potential storm surge. plus, a bit further south, preparations ubdsnderway in floa as tropical storm ian strengthens in the dribbian. they could get hit early next week. we've got your latest forecast. and a cnn exclusive. former president donald trump wage as secret battle to prevent

>> oh, yes. >> i'm just getting started. i love that holiday. >> i do too. we'll chat about that more during the breaks, but we've got no shortage of news and no shortage of storms apparently either. watching two major storms. first hurricane fiona a post-tropical cyclone that's making landfall in eastern canada as we speak, and then hurricane warnings are in place as damaging winds and heavy rain pound the region. in nova scotia, more than 300,000 customers are without power. >> the drone video shows the storm's destructive force. you can see it churning, the waves, with heavy winds. this is in the ocean. this could be canada's hurricane sandy. >> we were making calls until 11:30 last night. we were still making calls to residents trying to tell them you need to be up, be watching what's going on, and be ready to

move at a moment's notice if you don't already move right then. >> meanwhile a state of emergency has been declared in florida as tropical storm ian gains strength in the caribbean. ian is expected to strengthen to hurricane status as it makes its way to western cuba by monday afternoon. >> cnn's allison chinchar ais joining us. what is it you're seeing in the forecast right now in that part of the caribbean sea? >> that's a good question. the forecast calls for even more strengthening in the next several days, which skrning for a lot of the island nations that are in the path of this particular storm. right now they're at 45 miles an hour, gusting up to 60. we have tropical storm watches in effect for jamaica but hurricane watches for the cayman islands. we expect storms will go through the waters in the next few days, allowing the storm to increase

to a category 1 strength. from there, further intensification is expected to take case, about a category 2 by the time it makes its way to cuba. and once it hits the gulf of mexico, it's not out of the question. it could become a major hurricane before turning back. at this point, everything back from app la cha coa down to the key west is fair game. there is some uncertainty with the models. the blue dot is the european model, must faster, making landfall in the early portions of the day. the american model, the red dot, a little more slower, more likely on thursday and more likely up around the big bend region of florida. again, you've still got a little bit of uncertainty with both of the storms. part of it has to do with the upper level t trough. that could determine where the storm ultimately goes. there's only one of two storms we're keeping an eye on. we're still looking at tropical

storm fiona. don't let the post-tropical storm fool you. in beebeaver island, 94 miles a hour. even charlotte town, prince edward island, topping out at 70 miles per hour. those could get a little bit higher as we go through the next several hours. prince ed wartd island looking at an 80 to 90--mile-per-hour range. then it moves up and begins to make its way up toward quebec as well as newfoundland labrador. >> i'm glad you said don't let the word post-tropical storm fiona fool you because it's not over. let's bring in carlos swarez. we're seeing our first images of damage from canada. what are we seeing? >> reporter: that's right. we're getting a look at some of the damage out on prince edward island as what's left of fiona

made its way into that country. as you guys said this morning some 376,000 people are without power in nova scotia. that storm weakened to a category 2 after really having been a category 4 through much of its projection. the forecasters in canada said that they're expecting anywhere between 6 to 8-feet storm surge and they're calling for two months worth of rain making its way across the eastern part of canada. the shelters, there, they opened earlier this week, and the area there was really getting ready for this significant rainfall that was going to come with the storm. again, some of the damage that we're getting a look at from prince edward island shows some homes there without electricity. we looked at a drn there was a gas station also that was pretty -- that suffered some kind of damage. fiona has not been the drn has not only set its sights on eastern canada. as we know it's battered puerto

rico, the dominican republic, as well as turks and caicos. in puerto rico, nearly two-thirds of the island is still without power a week after the storm made landfall there. the governor has come under a great deal of criticism because of his overall optimism. he has been saying he expects the power to get back online relative live fast, and, again, nearly 60% of the island is without power. the governor there says that they're trying to make a good amount of progress on that front, but things have been a lot slower than they expected. at least five people have been -- five people have died associated with the storm as it makes its way into eastern canada. amara and boris? >> a frustrating situation for the people of puerto rico. carlos, let's talk tropical storm ian. it's gaining strength, expected to hit florida potentially as a category 3 hurricane. as you, amara, and i well know,

floridians usually onat category 3 storms. they don't get off the couch unless it's a 4 or 5. walk us through the situation there. >> reporter: officials down in florida, they're going to be making a decision later this afternoon on whether or not to start any evacuations. the storm really is several days out and so officials, their sense is they still have a little bit of time. but as you mentioned, boris, folks in south florida are used to this kind of weather, and right now they're waiting on word on where this storm might end up going. >> it's concerning because alison mentioned the waters are very warm. allison chincar and carlos swarez, thank you very much. there's a secret court battle being waged by donald

trump's attorneys. nierting to keep a grand jury from getting information from his inner circle in an effort to overturn the 2020 election. >> three appeared in the courthouse on thursday this. is apparently the most aggressive effort yet by donald trump to assert executive and attorney/client privileges. it's an attempt the keep some witnesses providing information in events surrounding january 6th. look, it's been a week of widening legal challenges for donald trump. so let's discuss with defense attorney and former federal prosecutor shan wu. shan, always great to have you. i know it's bright and early. we appreciate you being with us. this new cnn reporting about the secret court battle over attorney/client battle, obviously it's a secret court battle. we don't have all the details. to expert these kind of

privileges, in this case, to keep aides from sharing information to yoern turn the 2020 election, what do you make of that? >> i think the trump legal team has a much more difficult battle here with the grand jury for a couple of reasons, boris. first, the president that does exist speaks about the grand jury would trump -- no pun intended -- any of if executive issues. also important to remember t january 6th committee did not fight hard. one of the reasons is an executive privilege held by the executive branch and is exactly meant to fend off the outside inquiries about confidential advice being given to the president. this, of course, is a criminal investigation being conducted by the federal branch itself. so that's another weak point, trying to assert the executive

privilege against the executive branch. >> now the case relating to documents seized from mar-a-lago, an appeals court handing the department of justice a victory this week, basically allowing it to look at the documents marked at classified. does the former president have any recourse to delay that now? >> he does. he can continue to seek further appeals. i suppose he could ask what's called en banc to consider that. we'll have to watch to see whether he does that or number i mean, given his pattern, it seems like he would try that. >> yeah. i always wanted to ask your thoughts about the new york ag filing a civil lawsuit against donald trump and members of his family. that was one of the big legal headlines this week for the president. in a response, some are accusing

leticia james for pursuing this. how much of her decision, do you think, had to do with politics? >> honestly, i don't think very much of it has to do with politics. we should remember the new york ag's office with ags before her have gone off the trump business, for example, nonprofit organization and the trump family. also the sheer volume of evidence she's put forth in this complaint takes away from any notion that it's a partisan act because things like inflating the square footage of his penthouse to 30,000 feet, which would make it the biggest apartment ever in new york city from 10,000, things like that, you continue put it off. it speaks to itself that it's evidence-based rather than

partisan-based. >> the january 6th committee announced they're going to return next week. pretty soon they'll release their full findings and evidence too. are you expecting they'll implement new criminal charges against donald trump? >> i suspect they will. again, looking at the volume of evidence they have produced and the kinded and lines of questioning, it does seen like there's a lot of o a chance for charges. i would guess they would make a referral. >> shan wu, we've got to leave it there. the president has announced he'll run again in 2024. we'll see how all of his legal troubles play into that. >> thank you. still to come, russia raises the stakes as others are calling it a sham referendum. some residents are saying they're being forced to vote.

new this morning almost three dozen people have been killed in recent protests in iran. that's according to state media as cnn has not yet been able to independently verify the report. >> these protests stem from a death of a 22-year-old woman taken into custody by the more reality police.

calls for regime change. a video that really struck out me came out last night. you see protesters setting fire to a statue of a man who is considered to be one of the symbols of the islamic revolution, just really unthinkable scenes that we're seeing right now, something that was unimaginable in the republic. you know, amara and boris, watching what was going on in their home land, they were hoping this could be the beginning of something, a change or turning point for the country, but right now they're very, very concerned about the crackdown. they're seeing the signs we have seen in the past where the government has unleashed brutal force to supreme these calls for change. as you mentioned, there are dozened

dozeneds killed according to expert. very difficult to verify the numbers from outside the country. but according to amnesty international, security forces have been deliberately opening fired live rounds directly at protesters. and there's a lot of worry that we are going to see that crackdown in ens phi with the signs we've seen in the past with security, with the government using words describing protesters as rioters, calling what's going on and what's happening as something they're ready for. >> remarkable pictures. we'll be watching closely how much more the islamic republican continues to crack down. thank you very much. new this morning, a kremlin official says that the russian

they're concerned in the days ahead they may be under russian control. he tells me perhaps 20,000 people are hiding out here, but there's no real way to know. the choice russians imposes on ukrainians here is spending nights underground and scurrying between shelter. days of hot words from putin hasn't cooled ukraine's effects. it looks like the apocalypse has already come, bar the radiation. ten days ago russia was kicked out after heavy fighting. even the russian yord dox churnl ch . >> it hasn't really changed the dynamic here of an army that

u.s. in a recession. the dow closed down nearly 500 points in its lowest level since november 2020. here with me now is cnn global economic analyst ronna fourroux har. hi, there, ronna. i feel like i've been bracing myself for weeks now. obviously this aggressive move by the fed russ expected. what does this all mean for the regular folk in terms of, you know, if you're thinking of buying a home, what does this mean for credit cards, if you're buying a car? how does it impact us? >> there's no way around it. it's going to be pain. we're going to have to take some pain. you know, if you're buying anything on credit, it's getting more expensive. home credit rates are the highest we've seen in decades now. the rate hike we've seen is the

many of us, including myself, have been writing and talking about it for year. when you wait too long to raise interest rates, sometimes you have to raise them quickly, harshly, and that's where we are now. if you look back, we've had 15 years of extremely low interest rates, lots of money being pumped into the economy. i would have liked to have seen rates raised in 2010, 2011 c. give yourself a little bit of breathing room. now inflation is fight and you have to raise them. nobody wants high double-digit inflation. that's the worst possible world. so this is the situation the fed is in right now. they know that they may bring on a recession by doing this, but they don't have a lot else that they can do. >> so how close are we to a recession in your opinion? >> well, it's interesting. i think it's possible it could
