12:00 am
but i do have to say thank you anderson. it is weird when people say i grew up watching you. i didn't grow up watching you. but when i was working for another other networks and i would see you and you were just a great journalist and you have been a really good friend. and, an excellent coworker and i asked you the other day, anderson, am i crazy for doing this? i think you are actually very smart. >> totally. it will be great. thank you anderson. be well. what anderson said. this is the last time i will be saying that. this is my final show at 10:00 p.m. and we have surprises ahead so stay tuned. tonight, we have brought together some of our regulars
12:01 am
as we sit down here like we do every single night to talk about the news of the day. it is always no holds barred. don't be offended because we have real conversations here that people have at home. and, it's not like you are offending me for saying something. we haven't done that for eight- and-a-half years. these are the folks i have gotten to know really well over the years and my first guest has become a good friend to me and i'm so happy to have him on as my last first guest. he is a former metropolitan police officer who defended the united states capitol on january 6. this is his first interview for his new book. it is called hold the line. the insurrection and one cop's battle for america's soul. thank you for joining. how are you doing? >> thanks for having me. the last episode. >> i i know. the last episode. but this is not our last episode. but listen, i'm going to get to the book and we will talk about
12:02 am
our relationship and how how life has changed for you but i have to get your reaction to the prosecutors presenting evidence that the oath keepers leader called for a bloody civil war to keep trump in office after his loss. are they going to be held accountable? >> seems like they are in the process of it now. it is statements like that, that justified the doj bringing seditious conspiracy charges against stewart rhodes and members of the oath keepers and evidence like that is just proof positive of what their intentions were which was to start a civil war. >> it has been 21 months since you were brutally assaulted. we spoke just days after that happened. days later. everything has changed for you.
12:03 am
what stands out to you the most? >> well, probably the biggest thing is the career change going from 20 years as a dc police officer to i guess kind of being employed but not really being employed. other than that, i mean, i just, i don't know. i'm completely focused on accountability for january 6th. and unfortunately, i think a lot of the problems that i have been fighting against will not be solved in my lifetime so i'm looking for some changes that my children will be able to enjoy. >> and you are committed today that. i speak to you often and you are committed to that and you get a lot of guff for it. but i'm appreciative of it and i think most people in america
12:04 am
are. in this book, , you reveal you recorded your meeting with republican leader kevin mccarthy. you wrote you left feelingngng disillusioned and depressed. as ever. >> well, i mean i think it was more of what he did not say. he didn't really say a whole lot of anything. there wasn't a lot of substance to the conversation outside the fact i asked for some specific things. one of them being he would denounce members of the party that were talking about or down playing or denying the reality of january 6th. the reality of donald trump's involvement in january 6th. and, he wouldn't agree to do so. more so, he said he couldn't control these fringe members of his party which i thought was
12:05 am
pretty shocking coming from somebody who calls himself leader mccarthy being the leader of the house gop. but also, just the indifference. you know. the fact i sat there in a room having been a victim of that violence that day, sitting next to the mother of a dead police officer, that being brian sicknick. seeing a person who chose his political future and what he thought would be best for his party rather than to show some level of compassion or empathy for the people that were sitting in front of him. to him, we were an inconvenience. >> you also recorded and it is legal for you to record in dc. you also recorded meetings with the national fraternal order of police president and other police officers. why did you want to get these
12:06 am
conversations on tape? >> well, like you said, it is legal in dc. we have one party consent. and i was the party that consented. that being said, i knew that the things i was asking for in these conversations, most likely, i would be given a very different response privately than they might say publicly. so i wanted to make sure that the record reflected the conversations that they had and they could be held accountable if they decided to say something different in public. which all of them have. >> that happens a lot. especially since i have been covering trump. people will come on and say one thing in the green room or off camera. and when the lights go on, they become a completely different person. they become sycophants. i watched it happen over and over the past seven years. you also write about a meeting with republican senator lindsey
12:07 am
graham. at one point, you wrote, as i was describing the assault in the tunnel. graham said you should have shot them all in the head. we gave you guys guns and you should have used them. i don't understand why that didn't happen. how did you respond to that? >> i told him that i appreciated his enthusiasm. but, unfortunately, as law enforcement officers, we have very strict guidelines that dictate how we can use force when we can use force. and the situations, it would not have been appropriate just to open fire on a group o americans. some of whom were committing crimes. some of which may have risen to the level of deadly force to protect life. but, many would not. and shooting into a crowd like that, you would have
12:08 am
individuals who would have most likely been killed or injured that did not deserve to be. >> you wrote in the book that graham snapped at the mother of fallen capitol police officer brian sicknick who suffered two strokes hours after defending the capitol. >> that was pretty shocking. first of all, the fact that you would yell at a woman who had suffered so much loss. her son died as a result of defending the capitol on january 6th. all she was saying in the meeting was that she felt like donald trump was responsible. i had never witnessed somebody defend donald trump in public or in front of me like that and i thought that behavior from a senator was disturbing. and again, it goes back to the indifference that these people showed myself and all the other
12:09 am
officers that day. i didn't talk about it much in the book, but i would be lost not the mention mitch mcconnell. you know, while myself and harry dunn and mrs. sicknick were going to meet these senators, mitch mcconnell couldn't meet with us. he was too busy. he offered to send a junior staffer to meet with the mother of a fallen police officer. then he made phone calls to all of these senators asking for favors that they vote against the january 6th committee. or i'm sorry, bipartisan commission. i i mean -- >> yeah. it's hard to even fathom. >> i have words but i can't say them on tv. >> please don't. i think. >> use your imagination. >> but let me tell you, the book is fascinating. you talk about how differently
12:10 am
you have been treated since the insurrection. you talk about more than just january 6th. you talk about policing in america and politics. you talk about our relationship. i'm very proud of you. and, i hope this is a number one best seller. everyone should go out and buy this book. it is called hold the line. thank you buddy. >> thank you. >> i appreciate it. >> yeah man. just one scandal after another for herschel walker who says he supports abortion bans with no exceptions which looks like a lot of hypocrisy in the face of the woman who said he paid for her abortion also wanted her to have a second abortion two years later. we will discuss that next. the . the face of whoa. some are of intensity, others, joy. all are of - ahhhh. listerine. feel the whoa!

our shipping process was painfully slow. then we found shipstation. now we're shipping out orders 5 times faster and we're saving a ton. go to shipstation.com /tv and get 2 months free. growing developments in the herschel walker scandal with just weeks until voters go to the polls in the georgia senate race. the ex-girlfriend who says walker paid for her abortion in 2009 now also says he allegedly urged her to have a second abortion two years later. she said she refused and her relationship with the new gop senate nominee ended. her son is now ten years old. hello, one and all. the hits just keep oncoming. >> right? >> you have to be honest. this latest new york times
12:15 am
reporting, herschel walker urging this woman to terminate a second pregnancy. she did not. he wanted this woman to have two abortions, not just one. are republicans going to look past this? >> from what i'm hearing, yes. many of them are. and, they continue to throw their support and money behind him. and from what i'm hearing with the top republican officials, some are still planning to go down to georgia and campaign for him and encourage him to run because, or to stay in the race and to win. because, they are looking at this through the political lens. as we have talked about this before, the value and the importance in the state of georgia to have the policies that he would represent from a political standpoint with regards to inflation and the economy and crime and the border, they are supporting what policies he would bring to the future. they are frustrated and they are more and more, every time we hear a new revelation, they
12:16 am
are more frustrated and discouraged. >> and there's more to come. >> i don't doubt that. but they are looking at. >> there is more reporting that we are not reporting. but let me say, how can republicans continue to assert that he is antiabortion? >> it is difficult. if not impossible. to do so. i clearly 100% understand the appearance of hypocrisy here. what's good for thee is not good for me. if he did pay for an abortion and encourage another saying that i support abortion bans? the hypocrisy is through the roof. but again, from a political standpoint, republicans and social conservatives are supporting him because he plans to go to washington dc and support the pro life agenda. >> alice, everyone is like, and look, again. you know i'm not attacking you,
12:17 am
but, you have moxy to sit here. you are talking about the political landscape. everyone is sitting here going. >> but what i'm telling you is not just me. >> you are talking strategy. we get that. >> this is what republicans at large are feeling. >> you are still a republican are you? >> yes.. oh herschel. all i know is look. many of these groups like the family research council excoriate me because i was pro abortion rights, pro choice and pro lgbt rights. how could i be a republican and have those types of values? i would be lectured piously by these people. herschel walker may have paid for abortions. if he was pro choice, that would be not a big story. but because he has taken this hard position, the hypocrisy is
12:18 am
stunning. people are so transactional. these pious people. judging people like me. but a lot of swing voters are saying this doesn't past the smell test. >> that is where you will see herschel walker in trouble. clearly the base will support him. but i still think there are some true evangelicals that actually have values who will see this and say that's a bridge too far. i can't support this man. because if i believe life is is sacrisant, how could i vote for someone who forced his girlfriend to have an abortion and now says he wants to ban abortions for all women. i don't know if there will be many, but some will stay home. the swing voter suber ban moderate women, this is
12:19 am
disgusting for them. because, they see this man who is saying i support an abortion ban for every woman under every circumstance. but when i wanted my girlfriend to have one, it was okay. >> and he has denied it. but there is evidence. >> you will see people who will see this choice. that is what this election is about. it's not a referendum, it's a choice between a candidate who has been a lifelong public servant and the candidate who has demonstrated the height of hypocrisy who is an alleged abuser of women who held a gun to his ex-wife, who his own kid
12:20 am
has come out to excoriate him about how he does not represent family values. and they will. >> herschel walker firing the political director. what does that spell? >> there the trouble within the campaign. i read some reasons why this guy was fired. but they are in damage control mode. i can't speak to the exact reason why. but, there will be a lot of kemp warknock voters and shapiro and oz voters. >> to fire your political director. >> it is not a good sign. and when you are taking on water it is hard. it is hard enough as it is, the
12:21 am
stretch but when there is this type of incoming fire, it is impossible to do your job. and there could be based on what we are hearing and reading some concerns that people may not believe what he is saying. and it is really hard. >> you think? >> it is hard. when you are on a campaign, you know, you are working 24/7. you are working extremely hard. it is hard to put your name on the line and your reputation on the line for someone. >> it is easier to fire the consultant than the candidate. >> this is really a good point. we have all worked on campaigns anted you are working 24/7. you put your heart on the line. you want to believe in this candidate that you are working your butt off for and if you don't, that will be. >> did he just come clean? he owes it to the people of georgia. >> of course. don. yes. but he is not going to. >> he keeps digging himself deeper. >> he doesn't have the character. >> yeah. >> oh herschel.
12:22 am
>> thank you. >> we'll get to see you guys again. >> we want to say, don, you are the pride of baton rouge and late night. you will be the joy in the morning and it has been a blessing to be on your evening show with you and we look forward to being on the morning show and we are belaced that you are a friend and a colleague. blessed. >> a lot of people sit in these seats with a lot of different beliefs and political leanings. you and i have gotten into it. >> oh yeah. >> really gotten into it. >> you and i, not so much. but, we all like each other. >> we do. >> it is not personal. >> right. >> you'll get mad at me and i said i can't believe you said that on the air and you and i will have a conversation after. and i will say that's not what i meant and it's over. this is a thing. no one ever wins a cable news argument. and guess what? it continues the next day if there is an issue. >> it is a discussion, don. and i want to say you have brought so many important discussions not only to this

a busy week for president biden on the international front. for more i want to bring in mr. david axelrod. good evening to you. there has been so much going on with the biden white house. the president said i don't think there is such thing as a way to use a nuclear weapon and
12:29 am
not end up with armageddon. in the past, the white house has walked back these direct remarks from biden. but not this one. what's the thinking here? >> well, they were careful to restate they haven't changed their posture, that their footing has not changed. they don't see anything in the recent days that would change their view of the situation to the worst. but obviously, this is very dangerous. putin is backed in a corner. he is clearly losing. he is on the run. and, there's a lot of domestic pressure on him to turn this around so it's a natural thing to worry. it is suggested he might use these weapons. it's a natural concern. i'm sure there is an awful lot of strategizing going on around that. i think what happened last night, though, my reaction to
12:30 am
it was as a former presidential adviser and campaign adviser is i wish that there were never close door fundraisers. because there is something about closed door fundraisers, it's like you inject truth serum into these political figures. they think they are having an intimate discussion with friends and there were reporter ins that room though it was closed. so, you know, i think he got a little bit out over his skis probably from the perspective of his advisers but the concern is very real. it may not be what we saw. i'm old enough to remember as a little kid the cuban missile crisis. and, the real fear that american cities might be annihilated. that's not where we are now. it is still a very serious
12:31 am
situation. >> i want to get this in. in a new piece with the new york times, the author writes about a secret lost manuscript former president obama worked on. this is how shank describes that. speaking with a candor that he would soon be unable to afford, mr. obama directed his fire across the entire political spectrum. he denounced the broken status quo in which cynical republicans outmaneuvered feckless democrats leaving most americans trapped in a system that gave them no real control over their lives. isn't this exactly where we ended up? >> yes. and you know, i read that piece first of all. i was wondering why i never say that. why our opposition research people didn't find that and hand that to us in 2008. but that's a different story. no i think it was in many ways, it was a very, very astute
12:32 am
analysis. you will remember, don, the 2008 campaign, we very much emphasized economics and barack obama, people forget this. barack obama was the last democratic candidate, the only democratic candidate since 1964 to carry the state of indiana. he won iowa twice and north carolina twice and he did it by stressing economics and the common interests of working people across the country and i think there's a lesson to will berned in that. i do worry that the democratic party has arrived at that point that he was warning of. that it has become more a party of very comfortable urban and suburban college educated voters and has lost connection with working people across the country. and that is dangerous for the democratic party in the long run. >> yeah, david, thank you. i appreciate it. i'll see you in the morning.
12:33 am
hey don, best of luck. great to be with you as always. >> i got to get my sleep now. >> i got this for you here. get one of these, don. i want you to have one of these. you'll need it. >> i'll need like eight of them. >> see you in the morning. >> be well. >> great to be with you. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy warning that putin is preparing the russian people as a possible nuclear war. that is a question for william cohen. and he is next. riyam sabo knows a moment this pure demands a lotion this pure. gold bond pure moisture lotion 24-hour hydration no parabens, dyes, or fragrances gold bond champion your skin

top biden administration officials saying today president biden's warning of the prospect of nuclear armageddon is an indication of how seriously the u.s. government takes vladimir putin's threat to use nuclear weapon ins ukraine and is not based on new intelligence. the pentagon reaffirming today it sees no indication putin made a decision to use nuclear
12:38 am
weapons at this time. a lot to discuss with the former defense secretary william cohen. secretary, good evening to you. president biden made these unscripted comments last night at a democratic fundraiser. what is your reaction? >> well, many times, president biden is accused of encaging or making a gaffe. telling the truth some. when he didn't intend to tell it. this is no gaffe. as joe biden would say, it's no joke. and i think that he was right in raising the issue. people have been concerned about not the loose talk, but persistent talk on the talk of the russias if you don't make concessions or surrender, we can always use our nuclear weapons. they have guns, they have oil, gas, and guns. and nothing beyond that. so they will cut off the oil or use their guns. this is important for president biden to raise this issue. too much loose talk about the
12:39 am
ability to use nuclear weapons whether it is one kiloton or two kilotons. is it by land, air, or sea? and president biden was absolutely correct in saying put this into perspective. it is very easy to start down this path. and very hard to get off it once you get it going. the united states might just sink every russian ship in the black sea for openers. what would the russians do in response to that? so you are getting in this climbing of the ladder. climbing up, being carried up the escalator. and president biden says we need to stop this and alert the world. not only the russian people, the world that this is a danger they will be impacted with on a global basis if there is a nuclear exchange. >> the administration says nothing changed in terms of the intl to suggest that russia is
12:40 am
planning to use a nuclear weapon. what is our strategic interest and why are the stakes so high now? >> well because president putin made them high. it is not only ukraine at stake. all of the former states that were part of the soviet union, he wants them back. and if he can get away with threatening the use of a nuclear weapon if you resist him, then you can see a very vast change in europe. and certainly, your position in world affairs as well as ours, if you can threaten us with oil, our nuclear weapons, you are really conceding the future to dictatorships. so we have a lot at stake here. democracy is at stake here. and i have some people on capitol hill, some republicans, some in the media suggesting we should be on the side of the russians. no. we should be on the side of freedom and democracy.
12:41 am
and ukraine. not the russians. >> you and i have had so many discussions about the future of democracy. and we have election deniers and conspiracy theorists on the ballot. what does that all mean for our future? >> i think it is problematic. i remember a tee shirt saying i would rather be russian than a democrat. it is not about philosophy or ideology. it is about identity. it is about hate. it is about division. it is about exploiting those divisions whether it is race, religion, culture. whatever it is they are looking to exploit it based on division and hatred. and that is very dangerous going forward. we have a lot at stake. this election coming up in 2024. rule of law. and this is where republicans i think have lost our way that we
12:42 am
no longer believe in the rule of law simply winning at all costs no matter how hypocritical. no matter how lying we are about the reality of what's going on. we just want to win. that's not a good story to tell for our children, our grandchildren. >> listen, not all republicans, but i'm talking about the maga, the cultist element. the biggest purveyors of identity politics and they want to call other people out for it but they are the biggest purveyors of it. i have to go secretary, thank you very much, i really appreciate it. >> janet and i met you 20 years ago at cnn in atlanta and we have enjoyed the relationship. congratulations, you look very relaxed tonight for someone who just lost his job. congratulations. >> i haven't lost my job! it is a tequila before the show. i'm kidding, i'm not kidding. thank you. i appreciate it. it will be later though. so, it is the last don lemon tonight after a run of eight-and-a-half years.
