thanks so much for joining us. follow me on facebook, instagram or twitter. coverage continues with laura coates and alisyn camerota. good evening i'm alisyn camerota in new york. >> this is laura coates in washington d.c. it's crunch time. we're four days away from election day. if you want to know which states
7:01 pm
are in a fight for the finish, look at the map. you see the big names are hitting the trail in the final days. it tells you what you need to know about the race in states where frankly every single vote will count. >> and there is a remarkable ad we have to show you that claims to know what god wants. >> and on the 8th day god looked down on his planned paradise and said i need a protector so god made a fighter. >> oh my god. we are going to talk about that. >> i hope so. >> plus, the politics of pot, recreational marijuana is on the ballot in five states. most of them conservative red states. finally an issue that's bringing americans together getting high. [ laughter ] >> well, when you go low, they go high. i had to. i don't know why. it kalcame out as a whole thing >> fantastic.
7:02 pm
let's bring our experts on that. we have cnn political commentator scott jennings and keith and mark mckinnon. gent gentlemen, great to have you. >> i do live at 10,000 feet so i know something -- >> about being high. we'll dive into that momentarily. first, mark, when you look at that map of where all the biggest names in politics are being deployed from barack obama, donald trump, what does it tell you about the angsxiety levels? >> it tells a lot. if you want to know where democrats are in trouble, follow obama and biden. that smells trouble. they're there because democrats are in trouble. you see republicans like trump they smell opportunity. watch the map and look where obama was, nevada, arizona, biden is in pennsylvania. >> he's in new york. >> and in new york. >> why was biden in a blue
7:03 pm
state? >> we'll, because they're in trouble in new york. if that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about how much trouble the democrats are in. if they're sending the president of the united states in new york, houston, that i have a problem. >> let the democrat respond. go. >> we can't say anybody is in trouble when we haven't had an election yet. all we're looking at is poll numbers and the poll numbers aren't necessarily predictive of the outcome. every vote counts and the democrats are racing to the finish line to make sure -- scott is smiling -- every vote counts. we got to make sure we reach the point before we make conclusions. considering where we were at the beginning of the year, democrats are not that far off from people expected this to be a blood bath from the beginning of the year. >> because there was a time after roe versus wade that democrats had that surge. >> democrats had a surge after roe versus wade from june until september, early september and now we're sort of coming back to the norm and so now, people are realizing this is a tough race. we need to get every person out there, we can't take this for
7:04 pm
granted and just because we had a surge in the summer doesn't mean we're on a roll. we have to run through the finish line. >> scott, you're chomping at the bit. >> i wanted to respond to mark. trump travels a little differently. biden is deployed for political purposes. he can only campaign in blue states because it's the only place to accept them. for trump, he was in iowa this week, big state for 2024 and in florida which is a in your face desantis move so i interpret trump's moves through the personal lens for him than i do the president where he's trying to triage -- >> although iowa could be because grassly is having proubls. >> don't you think scott is right of donald trump's motivations? >> 100%. >> i do also want to show you this map of you'll remember this risky gambit of far right extremist republican candidates
7:05 pm
and so let's see if that paid off. here are six races where democrats rolled the dice on that and it appears at the moment that it did pay off for them, none of these in the polls are matching the democrats. >> yeah, in illinois and pennsylvania gubernatorial races was clearly a beneficial decision. whether it was a smart decision, i don't know if it was because of the fact the race is so tight, that's $53 million the democrats spent in the summer that could have been spent on focussing on turning out the vote for their own candidates in the party. >> ethically dubious and politically effective. >> not in every case. the candidate you didn't have was kari lake where they spent a bunch of money for her opponent. >> they didn't actually spend any money. the arizona democratic party put an effort behind her but didn't
7:06 pm
put any dollars behind that effort. >> meaning you think they put money into kari lake's campaign? >> no -- yes, they tried to suggest the more conservative candidate was better for them. >> they didn't put money on that one. >> the one on that list i'm more interested in is bulldock. chuck schumer's outside group spent at least $5 million at the last minute and i think directly caused him to get the nomination. if he wins, that was a direct investment. >> by the way, $10 billion is being spent on television. >> quickly. >> there is a philosophical problem if these candidates win, then you are the ones responsible as scott said for making them one and if it works or fails, it will be a lot -- >> absolutely.
7:07 pm
it's questionable. we have to play a piece of this campaign. >> get ready, folks. >> get ready. >> and on the 8th day god looked down on his planned paradise and said i need a protector so god made a fight er and kiss good-be for thousands of miles of liberty and happiness so god -- >> it goes on. it goes on for another minute and a half basically. i mean, i've heard of messiah complexes but this takes the cake mark, what do you see here. >> i've never seen anything like this. i think ron desantis lost his mind. i thought was a parody when i saw it. it's a direct ripoff after paul
7:08 pm
harvey line for line and no attribution to paul harvey. >> scott? >> hardly the first politician to engage in self-eng self-engrandizement. >> i do think it takes also a tremendous ego to not only run for but see yourself as president of the united states and. >> and godly. >> showing himself to have it. >> mark has been around a few presidential candidate as have i. >> i mean, just in terms of messaging do you think of going to that level, god, you're the chosen one -- >> do i think there is anned a y -- audience for that? oh, yeah. >> it's sad there is an audience for that because we live in a
7:09 pm
application or reasons he's basically running for president in the ad and feeding into charlie crist. >> not in his supporters' minds. >> nobody around him is saying no. somebody with some common sense should have said that's insane. >> you think that ad will hurt him? >> 100%. >> the blow back. >> i wish i believed that was true. i don't think -- >> i think the people of florida portrayed this as the model governance for the nation. they think of themselves as being elevated now because of the way he managed -- >> i'm saying this says something about his decision making. small circles watching this is great, go for it, do it. you take that to a bigger stage
7:10 pm
is problematic. >> laura, your thoughts? >> first of all, this is probably a resinating ad is because it was the 2014 rams truck ad where they played off of paul farmer and -- paul harvey so he knows what he's doing. it was successful and this article of symbolic pickup trucks and connecting the dots. he was obviously trying to appeal and this is an ad for a presidential run and the polls say something different but at the end of the day, i mean, it does take as they say cahones to be the anoinlteted one. this might be where you start. who knows. ask my panel here all about
7:11 pm
football tonight, all about that 2014 game. joining me now is laura lopez also liam donovan a former national republican committee aide and cnn political commentator maria cardona. let's address the elephant in the room and not talking about ram trucks but this was obviously a moment to say like i can use this again say 2024. he has his sights beyond florida, right? >> yes, i think ax lubsolutely. it shows the first one is he believes he is absolutely going to win the gubernatorial election, right? it's a setup. mark is right. there will be blow back. it shows exactly scarily what we saw with people around trump, which is there is nobody there to say maybe not such a good idea. i don't know if you really want
7:12 pm
to go there right now. there is going to be a bunch of people around him that are going to, you know -- >> talking about yes people. >> the idea -- >> yes, yes people. >> speaking of that, i want to play because you guys respond to this because part of it, yes, man, yes woman philosophy has to do with what is scary of some people and deja vu in the 2020 election versus now. listen to what mandela barns had to say about his opponent senator ron johnson. he says he's not going to concede win or lose. >> he showed us exactly who he is because he didn't get the results he wanted. it's petulant. it's very argent. it's the height of arrogance.
7:13 pm
>> the theme of tonight is arrogance. that's what we're talking about with desantis and the ad. how do you see it? is the idea setting up for the notion that look, they've been talking about the prospect of there being wide spread fraud of 2020 and don't feel it's been resolved fully. biden had a closing argument, student loan debt and also know about democracy and peril. is he picking up on that and saying look, even the president is thinking that so johnson is saying that's where i am? >> in both cases, this is media bait. this is to launch 1,000 segments on cnn talking about does ron desantis gone mad? this is about triggering the main stream media and getting them to question the tactics and whether you're an election denier. when you pick at the issues and they stick to the guns, it ends up looking hysterical. >> you mean ron johnson or both? >> well, i think that's the true line in my opinion. with johnson, i think it's -- it shouldn't be a got ya question
7:14 pm
but become a got ya question to acknowledge once should respect the outcome of an election is a swipe at the former president which is not something that republicans want to do right now. >> that's interesting you say that. the idea of got ya. i remember the conversation fears go as always, do you have confidence in this person? that was always the way the question was asked of the press secretary but think about congressman dan crenshaw on the 2020 election lie and he essentially says speaking of bait, it was a bait and switch. it was always kind of a lie. listen to what he said. >> it was always a lie. the whole thing was always a lie and it was a lie not to rile people up and i talk about this at nauseam and really made me angry because i'm like -- the promises you're making that you're going to challenge the electoral college and overturn the election, there's not even a process for you to do that. it doesn't even exist. like what the hell are we doing? i would tell that to people
7:15 pm
behind closed doors, like the political personalities, not even politicians. we definitely had the arguments behind closed doors in the republican party. we know that. but we just -- people just need their last hooray. they need to feel like we fought one last time. >> remember laura, he was somebody who voted to certify the election. so this is about the hold the truth podcast. who do you make of that? >> look, i think there is two big things right here that i want to point out, which is that there are ramifications to that big lie, to the lie about election results. january 6th and the violence that day was a direct result of the fact that the president repeated over and over again this lie. i don't think it's a got ya question to ask whether they're going ging to acre ces accept . the lies lead to violence. i was in michigan and talking to
7:16 pm
election workers there and ones who have been running elections for 20 years or more, they're scared. they're upset and scared and they're like -- >> physical safety. >> yes, physical safety. >> she said she has cameras on her home and she's in constant coordination with local police like never before and tracking external threats the fbi might send to her. those are unprecedented steps that do not happen prior to 2020 and they are happening and know they are happening because of the election deniers running down the ballot in michigan and if she could say something to them, it would be those lies have consequences and those words have consequences. when someone, a candidate like ron johnson, as a reporter, it's my job to hold politicians accountable whether republicans or democrats and if they're saying i interviewed the attorney general candidate in michigan who is also spreading lies about the 2020 election and
7:17 pm
i asked him the same question, the question i asked dana the incomekcumbent attorney general youcept the results? she said i refuse to lose. they didn't answer the question. >> in fact, on that point, i mean, we've heard time and time again that sort of pivot that laura is eluding to, the idea of not just saying the yes or no, which is a very difficult thing for people to say apparently and you can to the extent if it was a got ya question, which i don't think we agree it is, couldn't you just answer it in the affirmative? yes? >> well, i mean, we also have a word for that that we used to teach our kids, sore losers. >> two words. >> thank you. m math is not my strong suit. >> i'm with you. >> it's amazing how many elected officials are now willing to be unabashed sore losers and say it out loud. so yes. okay, but laura. >> we'll see. >> do you know what else is on

pot is on the ballot this election day. take a look at the map. voters in arkansas, maryland, missouri, north and south dakota will decide whether recreational marijuana use should be legal in their states. potentially joining the 19 other states plus the district of colombia where recreational use is currently legal. four of those five states are red states, pot is the great uniter. finally, we found a bipartisan issue. i mean, that is what it said. scott doesn't like this one bit. >> i recognize my views are in the minority of americans on this issue. >> what are your views? >> we'll come to regret this. we need more drugs in the country like i need a hole in the head. these are americans who are able
