with us on cnn, i'm john vause, it's 1 am here in atlanta, georgia, 11 pm in phoenix arizona, 10 pm in reno, nevada. -- and with georgia now heading toward december runoff, the focus is on two very close races in arizona and nevada, two states where incumbent democrats are trying to hold on to their seats in the u.s. senate, let's take a look at the latest updates, with how the votes are yet to be counted in arizona, democratic incumbent mark kelly, expanding his lead over blake masters. most of the votes have been counted for maricopa county, arizona's biggest county, with half the states total, population that includes the city of phoenix. kelly's campaign managers told cnn, they are confident expect to win. nevada, new numbers shows that katherine cortez masto is closing the gap on adam laxalt, there's still tens of thousands of ballots yet to be counted from clark county, the biggest county in the state, which includes las vegas, and the

states only county that leans democrat. cnn's gary tuchman has the very latest in from las vegas, nevada, first of cnn -- 's from phoenix arizona. here in maricopa county, the tedious work of democracy, continues counting the vote, hanging in the balance is the control of the u.s. senate. some 78,000 vote results for releases, were released this evening by maricopa county, didn't really change the races all that much percentage wise, but the democrats who are currently on a razor lead, a razor thin lead, they got just a bit more vote pad. now this is a slow, process, and it is a careful process. what we are hearing, though, on the edges, or some of the republicans on this ballot, who are frustrated have been talking about some of these election officials, might be doing this on purpose, releasing the slowly, on purpose. and we've got strong pushback

still need to be counted in the state of nevada. right now catherine cortez masto, the democratic senator, has made up about 7000 votes today, it is now behind the republican challenger by 8000 votes. , meanwhile governor steve says whack is made up around 7000 votes. >> here in clark county alone, the largest county in the state there are at least 50,000 ballots still to count, these are not ballots that were done in person on election day, these are ballots that are mailed, in a region of didn't drop boxes on election day. now the ballots can come until saturday, so either way they would've been counted, they're not counted because there was, cause the kind of because that's the law, as long as they were counted by, tuesday they can arrive by saturday midtown counted. this will continue till, saturday the counting will continue to, saturday and we still don't know who the winners of these very highest profile races will be, this is gary tuchman, cnn, in las vegas. >> even with some key races yet

>> what a week. and it's not over yet. , republican voters outnumber democrat voters by a significant number. now, at the same time, as cnn exit poll found that in the house, 49% of independent voters, when for an independent candidate, well 37% win for republican. -- democrats won independent voters, who may be the first time that the party who controls the presidency has won in the midterms as 2002. they got a lot of self-identified voters to vote for, them that's, democrats and they do this especially well in close races, that's how democrats manage to defy the odds. why did independents go for democrats over republicans? >> well, i describe this in october, as a double negative election. as we saw any exit, pull a majority of voters disapprove of the way that joe biden's handling the presidency. we have an incredible, number 75 or 80%, saying the economy

is only fair, for large numbers in the exit, poll say that inflation has been moderate or severe, hardship on, them and historically those are the kinds of numbers that produce a road for the party holding the white house, particularly among those independent voters. but, there is a second negative, to the judgment, that bounded and limited the impact of the first, which is that many of those same, voters had deep concerns about the republican party, and the trump era. and what democrats were able to do, is focus just enough voters, -- but on the question of what republicans would do with power, and i think the reluctance to give republicans unified control, symbolized and crystallized by the issue of abortion, and also about democracy, is what allowed democrats to really avoid the worst, in this midterm, especially given those underlying economic attitudes, and i to biden.

hour, welcome back everyone here in the nine states in around the world, i'm john vause. three days after the midterm election, hundreds of thousands of ballots are still being counted in western states, arizona and nevada outcomes along with the runoff in georgia will decide we -- right now cnn protects republicans will have 49 senate seats, to democrats 48, that means democrats would have to take two of the outstanding senate races to be in majority. republicans are just seven seats shy of claiming control the u.s. house, with more than 30 races still undecided, it's still possible to hit that 218 threshold, -- the first national issuances of january 6th insurrection of the capital, republicans did not see the dramatic wednesday expected, and the results were mixed bag for gop election deniers, several can still win their races, but others just unfair so well, cnn's brian todd breaks down the numbers.

>> a big theme in these midterms, the prominence of election deniers, we're focusing on those prominent deniers, starting in the -- four, senator, secretary of state, one of the most well-known and aggressive deniers, these arizona republicans kari lake, still in tightly contested race for governor, she has falsely declared president biden's win there in 2020 was stolen, and demanded this year that biden's 2020 win in arizona, be decertified, which is an impossibility. another two, denier republican blake masters still in that close race in arizona, for senator. in nevada, a tight race could put out a whack salon, office as a u.s. senator. walk sold made several false claims about the 2020 election, snow is rigged, and he's made baseless claims about the integrity of the vote count, in that state. but there are also very important races for secretary of state, in arizona and nevada, they have not been called yet. these are critical because the secretary of state basically

once the election laws in those states. and those two states aggressive election deniers are still in the running, in nevada, jim marchand will be on the cusp of victory. he has insisted that it was, quote, almost artistically impossible that joe biden won nevada in 2020, which is flat out wrong. and his claim that election winners into potential thousand and six, have been quote, installed by the deep state cabal, in arizona mark fischer filled in -- win overseeing the 2020 election. these are men who could be running elections, so define election results, in those crucial states. let's look at the prominent candidates among election deniers, who have already won or lost. one of the big winners among, deniers j.d. vance, he's gonna be the next republican senator from ohio. here >> we from donald trump, and claim that people were voting illegally, on a large-scale basis, both completely false claims. among the prominent losers, don

-- a soft landing for the economy is looking increasingly plausible. plausible is an interesting choice of words, because it means you can reasonably make the case for something to happen, while possible means it's actually capable of coming true. we do stand with krugman, or wall street investors who see the days of sky-high flashing coming to the end. >> john, do you hear that? that is a sigh of relief. but we're not over yet. it's nice to see that we are seeing some traction. i still don't know for the peak, yet we've seen this before, four months ago we are at the peak, but i think it's showing that what the fed is doing is working, that's the cy, but we're not out of the woods yet. was trying to get to 2% inflation, and you just mentioned we are just at eight coming, down it's gonna take a little while, especially when you think about wage growth at the same time. so i'm not sitting here -- yes, i'm glad that the market

not coming down quickly enough, i think that's where we're gonna see -- so for those who are taking this news the market is happy thinking that the fed is going to not increase anything that's a false premise, because you're still gonna see them be impressive in the next couple of meetings. >> do we know what the federal reserve in particular, the torture-in-chief jerome powell, who keeps turning the screws, one of actually looking for here in terms of falling inflation? one month, two months, three months? what does number? put a number on it. >> i would say two months, because it really needs to kind of settle back down. so the next month, the cpi index inflation will be telling, to see if there's actually a pricing dropping, not just inflation, but also pricing. the every day item, that's important to this, as well as jobs. don't forget, unemployment numbers are still being looked at. we're seeing the job growth as well.

ideally to, but conservatively i have a feeling the fed is not going to lead off the gas, until they seem a couple of months, and then feel really comfortable. -- it would be that meeting, or the next one after that. >> and this gets into the timing of everything, because mr. krugman pointed, out it's plausible this point but you could have that sort of, soft landing that seemed so so on attainable off in the distance, but they do go too far here and they took the economy into recession. >> yeah, this off, landing i hate to disagree but soft landing means there's a clear path beyond it, but there's too many variables and we are points all over the place. the soft landing, yes is possible, but is it highly likely? i mean probably, not even the federal chairman says that's probably not gonna be the summer of that aspect. so i think what we're gonna, see and more importantly that

nicole. -- thursday along florida's east coast. dozens of homes and hotels have been deemed unsafe in the wake of the storm. -- in st. augustine, florida shows states flooded last hurricane hit. cnn says that people have been trapped inside the dormitory. there is treasure, but expected to produce significant rainfall as it heads north. at least 1 million people across the u.s. are under winter warnings. and they might receive a foot of snow. let's go to meteorologist derek van damme for more on this. >> it's crazy to think that we are talking about that. right? i believe i learn something from you the last hour or something like the last time we had. in the morning. a tropical storm warning was back in 2012 so pretty interesting to see that we are talking about both the -- tropical system in the winter season at the same time. this is what's left of the storm across the northern
