highlighting the agenda item in there. so katie porter's district and highlighting prescription drugs, very localized pocketbook issues from the agenda. that was 50% of what they wanted to do. the other 50% was, to make everybody aware that the republican party was no longer the republican party but it was now the maga republican party. that was the other piece of the strategy. and that had real residence. i mean, we talked about the independent voters pushing this way. that is what this is in response to. why did independent voters go to these candidates? because the republican party was indeed seen as extreme, and i think that is of concern to those voters in the middle, and a pretty significant way. >> i think what happened in
7:01 pm
response to the paul pelosi attack, what we saw, some republicans, kari lake, her joke about it, then youngkin's joke about it as well, and it was sort of like, not exactly a cheering section around what happened, but certainly, no vast denunciation of what happened to paul pelosi, and that really i think, just the argument that joe biden was trying to make, and he made that link in a speech that he gave a couple of days before the election. >> if we thought before the election and polls were showing, there's a huge enthusiasm gap between republicans and democrats although -- at the very end it di d narrow but democrats were
7:02 pm
eager to go to the polls and maybe one of the reasons, i think, late in the game was the increased visibility of donald trump. there was a lot of visibility of donald trump after the search on mar-a-lago, and that created quite a stir than it die down but then he started doing rallies, and then the paul pelosi incident, which mia points out, which i do believe, impacted a lot of people, so i'm wondering, in the last weeks of this election that became front and center and people were saying, this is not the way we want to live. independent voters -- >> you heard schumer said abortion rights for women became an important issue . >> and the gender gap that we thought was there because of one pole, didn't materialize, so, you know, there was one report that there was a 15 point gender gap in the republican favor and that certainly didn't materialize . >> this election wasn't won or lost on talking about the future or people embracing valleys, it was really based on fear. you have the independence have decided whether it be abortion or donald trump's rallies,
7:03 pm
people went to the polls basically out of fear. and we saw that before when donald trump was elected. there's a lot of reasons why donald trump was elected that there were a lot of times where people were afraid, that says something for the parties over the next couple of years . they've got to figure out what is the message, and maybe it is as simple as what james carl said many years ago, it's the economy, stupid. it all comes down to what happens in our wallets. >> but it was more than that. >> no, but fear, zhang, the positive message has got to be the economy and what happened what i'm saying is that abortion really drove people up because they were afraid of what they saw as policies that were very extreme. >> and young voters. >> this win, it's a huge win for the democrats that they will retain the majority status in the senate despite the fact that that the other party usually does well in the first

midterm after a presidential victory, this is a big win for the democrats. does this encourage biden further to go ahead and seek reelection? >> that's an excellent question. he told us on wednesday, that over the holidays, he anticipates he will be spending some time talking with his family about that. i think we have to wait for those conversations to take place. i don't know how many times joe biden had to say, his attention intention is to run, you know, -- >> i think this reinforces his intention. >> i have no doubt that this will put wind in his sales. i just want to, as we are discussing this, the house of representatives is still more likely than not to flip to republicans at this point. and i think, to mark's point about a direction that the party will look for, you know, is there
7:05 pm
going to be overreach? are they still going to go through with all of their investigative plans despite the overall result -- >> are they still going to try to impeach biden? >> launching a biden impeachment process or targeting his son, hunter, if that is the response to what the voters said in this election, the republicans are perhaps in danger of overreaching and i think that too, might embolden joe biden speaking if that's what happens . >> and i say one more thing about biden, which might be counterintuitive on this but i was talking to somebody who's close to a person in the white house he was kind of dealing with this, and i think one of the arguments for him not running, is why not go out on top? you have defied history here, with keeping the senate, not losing a lot of seats in the house, et cetera, you are on top, you are the man, and history is on your side here ,
7:06 pm
and the next campaign is going to be worse than the last one, because it's not a covid campaign. you will be out there on the campaign trail, and so i think there is a thought process going on, and i'm sure it's going on inside joe biden's head as well as the families, how do you want to be viewed in history? >> i think the other argument is, you know, history was on his side in terms of beating donald trump in 2020. is he the only person who could be donald trump? donald trump seems all but certain to run. he would probably be the favorite, if it's a big field because he could just divide the field, so i think that's the main argument, and he has a decent record of a coppersmith in terms of legislation, voters look at it, certainly, in this election and sided with the democrats. the counterargument is maybe he's too old to run the last time i checked, donald trump is
7:07 pm
around the same age . >> what if it's not donald trump he's running against we will get to hillary in a few moments but first let's go back to john berman, tell us about the new balance of power in the united states senate. >> the democrats now control 50 seats in the u.s. senate, the republicans with 49. this gives the democrats the majority, no matter what happens in georgia, where there will be a runoff on december six, of course, if the republicans to win in georgia, if walker beats warnock, it would go to 50-50 but democrats would still control the senate because the vice president, kamala harris, would break the tie and of course if raphael warnock, the senator wins there, the democrats will have 51 seats, and that one seat will matter. it would give democrats ever so slightly more dissipation on each committee, and there were times you will remember, that joe manchin and kiersten cinema, two senators, their votes were split, they wanted different things as joe biden
7:08 pm
and the white house is pushing for, something believe me, democrats very much want to win that runoff in georgia i think everyone got caught up in the moment because catherine cortez masto, she didn't just win nevada, victory is what put the democrats over the top in the u.s. senate but what just happened in nevada, to do it, was she now leads by 4982 votes , she had been behind by about 800 votes there, and what it was, with clark county, clark county, 22,000 votes that were counted there and i can put up just so that we all know what happened, those votes came in, and they broke 14,084 for cortez masto, 8234 for laxalt, and that was 60%, roughly, to 35 and that was more than enough, but i more than enough to put her over the top and give her that margin of 4982
7:09 pm
votes, it was that 60% margin out of 22,000 votes in clark county which did it and we are still waiting on more votes from washoe county which in all likelihood may skew democratic so her lead could still grow, it's a narrow lead of 5000 votes but when i pointed it out to you before, was that by nevada terms, nevada terms, it's actually, it's a wider matt margin than harry reid enjoyed over joe manchin adam laxalt's grandfather actually wants beat harry reid in a senate race by a margin that was less than 5000 votes, so they got a history of doing a close in nevada so this is a pretty wide margin, as we are looking at the senate here, guys. >> standby, we will get back to you soon. gloria, the december contest in georgia, it still very

7:11 pm
in georgia, senator raphael warnock orders a potentially help the challenger, herschel walker. >> it's a boost to say that we can win in difficult races but what i'll be looking for is to see the infighting in the republican party and who's going into georgia to save herschel walker? will we see brian kemp who has been deputized by mitch mcconnell to try to get herschel walker over the finish line? is donald trump then going to show up at of donald trump shows up, the metro atlanta area, that won't be a bad thing for walker because we know those counties around big cities we have women voters who played such an influential role, are they just going to come out and try to support the democrat, raphael warnock. >> everybody standby, cnn is
