bigger the field is, the better chance, perhaps, that donald trump has to be able to pull this off. but he is not gonna be president of the united states. van and anderson, i think if he is the nominee and he runs, he's not gonna be president. people are not gonna vote for him again. maybe that will be in his calculation, as he moves forward, but i don't believe it. i would say, all along, he was fading. he is fading. it could be the nominee, but he ain't gonna win. >> van, it's interesting, histories are replete with candidates and people thought is gonna be a great national candidate, somebody never runs for national office before, ron desantis has not. we have no idea what sort of campaign or he is. >> look, i think right now, he is the great hope for people who want to say the republican party move forward, trumpism without trump. and so, that makes him, i think, an interesting figure. but, you know, the reality is people say he is not as warm as he'd have to be in places like iowa to get the nomination. but, what i will say is that republicans just don't like
10:01 pm
party leaders who screw up much room elections. i remember newt gingrich, you know, that great, typed in somebody who really reshaping publican party. he was a dominant speaker. he screwed up in the 1998 midterm by just getting fewer folks elected then he promised. and he was gone. so, i think something about this republican party, if you are the party leader, and you don't have a great amateur performance, people start moving away. and i think you might actually see that happening now. i think trump is weaker than he's ever been before. and i think tomorrow, you would expect people to rally for trump. i think you are going to see something quite different tomorrow. you're not gonna see people rushing rushing to the party, people standing back and other people criticizing. >> yeah, van jones, john kasich, appreciate it. a programming note on wednesday, cnn's come to a special town all with former vice president mike pence. a lot of studio audience, along with jake tapper. he'll ask the vice president pence questions starting on 9 pm eastern. we are going to reset the gear at the top of the hour.
10:02 pm
if you're just joining, us thanks very much. another hour of ac360. we're gonna go to kyung who lah is standing by in phoenix, and arizona, maricopa county with the latest vote count in the governor's way. kyung, what's the latest? >> the very latest vote count that we're getting from maricopa county, which is, and i just want to point this out to people, if you're just joining us, maricopa county is the largest county in the state of arizona, often, you have to win in maricopa if you want to win in the state. that's why we are here. that's why the candidates pay so much attention to it. and, tonight, this latest batch, we did see kari lake do slightly better. but she needed to do even better, according to people from within her campaign. and so, what we see right now coming out of maricopa county is that katie hobbs, the democrat, remains at 51%. kari lake is at 49%. that is very close. but then, you size that up through the state, and those numbers that continue to show
10:03 pm
that katie hobbs remains in the league. we are hearing from a source from within the kari lake campaign, someone we've been talking to for many days, who characterizes tonight a vote dump that the lake campaign had been riding on to break in their favor, that all of their math show that they needed to win this, that source is characterizing this as, quote, a massive disappointment. that this batch, they anticipated would be very republican and it just didn't happen. they were anticipating that 66% of this batch needed to be won by kari lake, and that number is far higher. it's a bit higher than what it actually ended up being. i'm also, anderson, getting a lot of reaction from republicans within this state. there was quite a battle between moderate republicans, mccain republicans, who really make up the fabric of traditionally, traditionally made up a fabric of republicans
10:04 pm
in this state, a long history dating from john mccain all the way to barry goldwater. and they are reacting. one person who i want to quote, baird morrison, who worked for blake masters during the primary, says that he hopes that keri lake will, quote, graciously concede. and he says that the lesson of this election tells us one thing. this election tells us one thing. following trump over the cliff will not win elections. and then, i was just talking about that battle between the mccain republicans and the trump republicans. fierce battle we've seen over a couple of different cycles. one of their publicans in the state said that kari lake told a legion of john mccain supporters across arizona that they could go to bleep, tonight, they return at their favor. so, this sort of annexed, what we see is that republicans, those mccain republicans, they ended up fundraising for katie hobbs. we talked to a number of them.
10:05 pm
many on camera who said that they simply could not stomach the trump republicans, that what they wanted was what mccain represented, decency, honesty, and conservative values, which they feel is the real fabric of arizona. and that they did not feel that a future with kari lake would deliver that. anderson? >> i want to check in with john king and the magic wall. john, what else can you tell us about these latest ballots from arizona. >> just that the math is getting near impossible for kari lake, despite a very improved performance in these last numbers of maricopa county. let's walk through. with anderson, here's where we are. here's the challenge for kavalec. we are running out of a every little vote, the pool of available votes for her to catch up has not shrunk, almost to the point where katie hobbs is leading. now, katie hobbs is now up 20,480 vote, that's 50%, 50.4 to 49.6. that is a very, very, very close race, right? but here's the challenge. we talked about this at the beginning of the hour, kari lake needs to get 50% or more of the new votes in maricopa
10:06 pm
county. these are the new votes that came in the last hour, and yes, finally, she got more votes than katie hobbs in her vote installment. there were five previous vote installment that came in today from different locations in arizona. careless on the bottom of all, and that finally, she comes out on top, 40,575 to 30,000 a 2025 in this new installment in maricopa county. that is 57%. that is a big number. but not when you need 60% or more. that was the challenge. and that's why, as kyung lah is saying from her sources inside this wall room, they knew this was disappointed, disappointing. you look at that, 57% in the county, let me bring it up. maricopa county, where, you know, katie hobbs, forgive me, has led throughout the race. it's the blue county. so, if you see these numbers, kari lake should be encouraged, they've been accepted so late in the race. and the universe available for votes, it's so small. this was the biggest pool left of available votes. she needed 60% or more in these both. she got 57%. so, now, anderson, she is losing maricopa county. she is losing statewide, and
10:07 pm
the challenges the, pressure on her tonight is to acknowledge them off and bow out gracefully. but we also know she surrounds herself at times with trump lawyers, trump acolytes, steve bannon and others. so, this is gonna be fascinating to watch. they can do the math if they want, they can check out the numbers of outstanding votes. but i could tell you, we don't have an exact number get, but that number of outstanding votes is not terribly much higher than 20,481 that katie hobbs lead with. so what we see so far, consistently over the last six days, can you expect carey lake to get 70 or 80%? or maybe more than that of the remaining vote? that's pretty unrealistic. >> john, standby with us. aly bone is with us. she is arizona assistant secretary of state. appreciate you joining us after tonight's drop, how many total votes are left in arizona. >> hi, good evening. so, it looks like we have about 60,000 ballots left statewide with 20,000 votes in maricopa and pima county. and then, banal county has a chunk left, and apache county,
10:08 pm
coaches county, but for the most part, we're looking at very few ballots still outstanding. >> so, 60,000 you said? >> that's right. >> and do you believe the arizona governor's race will go to a recount? >> so, the recount statute right now says if the merchant is within 0.5%, right now, secretary hobbs is outside of that recount margin. so, as long as the vote totals continue to come in around but they have been, we are likely to see that. but if we see anything different change then it would be the recount margin. we are tracking a couple of races right now. state legislative races, as well as some other states races that are within the recount margin like the attorney generals raise, and the superintendent of public construction. >> kari lake, just tonight, has raised questions on fox about katie hobbs, secretary of state, overseeing the elections, essentially, counting all the votes. it's katie hobbs they are
10:09 pm
counting all the votes? she the one determining the count? >> anderson, no. and in arizona, the elections are highly decentralized. and the counties are responsible for administering the elections and tabulating the votes. so, secretary hobbs has not been involved in that tabulation process. our office does not touch ballots at all. after the logic and accuracy testing, once early voting starts, our office is out of any administration. it's only the counties that do that work. so, there has been no reason on that the secretary would have to recuse herself for any reason at this point. there isn't necessary conflict of interest that has presented itself, that is causing us to have any concern about that. >> the washington post is reporting, kari lake set up a so-called war room to plan out her next move. the results of the election, if they don't go her way. if a candidate contest the results, can you walk us through the process by which arizona verifies its count? >> yeah, so, it will start with the counties, we'll do a certification or a canvas of the election.
10:10 pm
they have 20 days after the election to perform that canvas. and then, those results will come to the state, and then, that is signed off on at the state canvas by the secretary, but it also has to be signed off by the governor, the attorney general, and the chief justice of the arizona supreme court. so, it is a process that, you know, gets reviewed by each county board of supervisors, as well as the top officers in the state. >> also, john king, i know he has a question for you. john? >> yeah, madam secretary, i just want to follow up on the point anderson made. i suspect this is about to come up in the days ahead. kari lake was on fox earlier, saying that she didn't want -- that katie hobbs is going to certify her own election. so, i just wanted, in very plain language, the county's report the votes. is there any certification in your office, it's so, will she have anything to do with it? or does it go to the governor? >> so, this is defecation's, all 15 counties will report their results to that state, to the secretary of state's office. and the secretary of state compiled all of those results,
10:11 pm
the secretary's office will compile those results, and put together the statewide canvas. the secretary does sign off on that, but it's also gonna be signed off by governor doocy, attorney general mark brnovich, and the arizona chief justice of the supreme court. so, it's not like secretary hobbs is doing that on her own. this is how it operates every four years and every state across the country where secretary of state is on the ballot. and they are certifying either their election win or their election laws. this is nothing new. and, you know, again, the administration and the election itself occurs at the county level. >> so, if you can, help me with a conversation, because you could make an argument in today's politics, given all the, i get it, no facts behind them. questions raised about election integrity, wouldn't it be best for katie hobbs to just recuse herself, to say because of those questions, i am not gonna be in the room? my good deputy is gonna sign these for me. that is one argument. the other argument is, no, they're wrong.
10:12 pm
they've been lying for years. i'm gonna do my job and sign it. which one? >> well, again, if there is no reason that there is any kind of conflict, or we are not in recount territory, it really doesn't make any sense for the secretary to not perform what is a ministerial act in signing the canvas. so, our position has been that unless there is a conflict related to the governor's race, then it doesn't, there is no reason for the secretary to recuse herself. and you all know, you've seen here in the last five days, i've been talking to you. we have not had the secretary talking about anything related to the processing of this election. and, again, the counties are handling the administration of the election at the local level. >> highly bones, i appreciate your time tonight. thank you very much. we're gonna continue to follow the count in the governor's race throughout the hour. also, tonight, how the former president shaped the midterms. harry enten is gonna break us break it down for us. we have new audio from the day of the robb elementary shooting. and the question it raises about the role of the acting police chief in uvalde, texas.
