it's thursday, november 17th. a slim majority is reshaping the balance and majority of the house. republicans have 218 seats needed to be in power when they take over the chamber in january. >> the republican majority will be razor thin but they'll still call the shots with committee assignments and legislation. they've already signaled investigations into the biden administration will be a high priority. >> democrat nancy pelosi is losing her position as house speaker. she's set to announce her future plans later today. kevin mccarthy is planning to take the gavel from pelosi next january. there are already indications he could face a tough challenge for the speakership. mitch mcconnell has secured another two-year term. he's on track to become the longest serving party leader in senate history. cnn's manu raju reports from

agenda. they will have the power to drive the investigations on the committee. the power to issue subpoenas. we expect on thursday morning two committee chair men to begin to lay out their investigative priorities, namely investigating the president's son, hunter biden, and overseas business dealings will be a big part of the agenda. they still have to legislate. that will be difficult given the divide and the likelihood this will be a razor thin house majority meaning kevin mccarthy, if he becomes the next speaker of the house, will have a very difficult time navigating the two wings and making sure there is as few defect shuns as possible to get his agenda through. manu raju, cnn, capitol hill. after the republicans reach the 218 seats in the house, president biden offered an olive branch. >> he pitched saying the

recognize it. at a cnn town hall former vice president mike pence faced questions from members of the audience. the capitol insurrection of course. mike pence says he doesn't plan to testify before the january 6th committee but admits it was the most difficult day of his public life. >> it saddens me, but that day it angered me. i must tell you, when the secret service took us down to the loading dock accompanied by my wife, my daughter saar lot and her secret service detail, i was determined to stay at my post. i told the secret service that i was not leaving the capitol. i didn't want to give those people the sight of a 16 car motorcade speeding away from the capitol that day but frankly when i saw those images and when

i read a tweet that president trump issued saying that i lacked courage in that moment, it angered me greatly. but to be honest with you, i didn't have time for it. the president had decided in that moment to be a part of the problem. i decided and was determined to be part of the solution. >> pence says that when he first saw donald trump after the riot the former president was, quote, deeply remorseful in that moment. jool new details are emerging about the shocking killings of four university of idaho students last weekend. police say there were two roommates in the house during the attack and that both have been fully cooperative with the investigation. so far no suspects have been identified. >> this comes as new video surfaced showing two of the victims the night of their murder. the students who were found dead in an off campus residence are heard on the video ordering from a food truck in the early hours of sunday and seen chatting with

each other and other people standing by the truck. the image comes from the food truck's twitch stream. more from lucy cavanaugh. >> we do not have a suspect at this time and be that individual is still out there. we cannot say that there's no threat to the community. >> reporter: with a killer on the loose, police in moscow, idaho, trying to calm a community on edge shaken by the brutal killings of four young students. >> but the reality is, is there's still a person out there who committed four horrible, horrible crimes so i think we've got to go back to there is a threat out thereto still. >> reporter: the students bodies were found inside this home across from the university of idaho campus sunday. police say two were at a party on campus while two others were at a downtown bar. all returned home sometime before 1:45 a.m. what happened after remains a misystery mystery. >> the four were stabbed with a

knife but no weapon has been located at this time. there was no sign of forced entry into the residence. we're not 100% sure if the door was unlocked, but there was no damage to anything and the door was still open when we got there. >> reporter: the coroner describing a graus some scene. >> there was quite a bit of blood in the apartment. it was a pretty traumatic scene to find four dead college students in a residence. >> reporter: the victims all members of greek life on campus appear to have been friends. pictured in this photo pictured by kayleigh before their death. kayleigh was killed alongside danica noodle, and 21-year-old madison mogul and 21-year-old ethan chapin. the university president deeply

shaken. >> first, my condolences to the families and friends. excuse me. their loss has been devastating and they were bright lives in our community. >> we're still trying to process it. it's not a call you think you have to deal with funeral home directors, the fbi and have it hit national news. >> reporter: the families who should have been planning thanksgiving day dinner now making funeral arrangements while demanding answers and justice. the police chief was asked about comments describing this as a crime of passion. the chief refusing to speculate whether it's one thing or another, saying only that authorities are, quote, looking into every aspect of this. for the grieving families and the shaken community, there are still more questions than

answers. lucy cavanaugh, cnn, denver. the man convicted of plowing his vehicle into a crowd at a christmas parade in wisconsin will spend the rest of his life in prison. darryl brooks received six life sentences wednesday with no chance for parole. he was found guilty last month on all 76 counts stemming from last year's attack that left six people dead and dozens injured. north korea is warning of fiercer military responses to the bolstered defense ties to south korea and japan. it comes as pyongyang fired a short range ballistic missile. >> it was launched from the country's east coast before landing in the waters off the korean peninsula. it is the 33rd day they carried out a test. anna, obviously missile tests, belligerent rhetoric is par for the course in north korea.

we did see a sharp response between the u.s. and south korea. how severe is the deterioration in this relationship? >> bianca, it's been more than a week since we've had any missile testing out of north korea. they've been very well behaved whilst global leaders have been here. that all changed this morning. south korea saying it is a ma c4. once again it broke u.n. security council resolutions. hours earlier the north korean foreign minister had issued a threatening statement promising a fiercer military response towards the military following a try lateral meeting that had been held on the sidelines of the asean summit last sunday in cambodia. it was there that they had

issued a joint statement in response to this recent aggressive behavior from north korea pledging greater security cooperation between the three countries. now north korea's foreign minister said that these talks as well as these recent military exercises that you mentioned, bianca, earlier this month has brought the situation to an unpredictable phase on the korean peninsula. as you say, this is the 3rd day north korea has fired missiles and both believe it's only a matter of days before north korea conducts the seventh nuclear test. that will be the first time since 2017. now south korea's foreign ministry said a short time ago that pyongyang's nuclear and missile tests will only further strengthen ties and, quote, worsen international isolation of north korea. bianca, max, back to you. >> anna coren live from hong

and learn how abbvie could help you save. new york is in for several feet of new snow as a powerful storm pummels the northeast. derek van dam joins us with the details. good morning, derek. >> good morning, max. residents of the great lakes are preparing for a major winter storm starting today lasting through a better part of the weekend. there's a large caveat with that sentence and that is not everyone is going to experience the heavy snow. i'll explain why.

here's the latest winter weather alerts. notice the lake effect winter snow warning. this is a lake enhanced s snow machine. this is why this is important. off of lake erie and lake ontario is a banding putting some locations in the heavy snow band. you can see the snow band right about here. winds in a due westerly direction. if you are traveling 10 miles to the north or 10 miles to the south you get nothing. so this is what we're talking about, an extremely localized event. miles matter and it is really going to set the stage for the potential for historic snowfall. we've got the stage set in terms of temperatures. we're waking up to over 200 million americans below freezing. compare that to the relatively warm lake waters. remember water maintains heat longer than the air does. we get the combination of warm water creating instability. once the cold air rushes over top of it it cools, condenses, creates cloud.

eventually the wind pushes that moisture that it creates right over the land creating snowfall. it's certainly cold enough to see that. our forecast radar picking up on that. in terms of snowfall totals, we're not going to be measuring that in inches. for many specific locations for buffalo new york into water town, new york, those are the two areas that the national weather service has highlighted with the discussions like paralyzing snowstorms as a possibility. we're already seeing do you believe digit marks. the wind direction is important and so isn't the wind speed. forecast from 25 to 45. this is important, i'll draw this on the map. notice the southwesterly wind starting to shape up into the course of the second half of the weekend. that is going to put buffalo and water town within the cross hairs for the potential of extremely heavy snowfall. it's all thanks to the cold fronts pressing through setting the stage for this lake-effect

understanding of events. >> reporter: it doesn't seem at the moment they are challenging it. i think what we heard was president biden commenting on something president zelenskyy said earlier in the day when he spoke to local reporters here, that he said it wasn't ukrainian missile, but he was convinced of that. after getting p off the plane responded to it. president zelenskyy made the nightly a tres can. he said, ukraine's position is transparent. ukraine is providing full data so i think the u ukrainian officials were in the proximity of the polish border where the two polish people were killed when the missile came down. the ukrainian air force or

ukrainian air defense forces were, in fact, trying to take down a russian missile. i think all the indications from the ukrainian side now is in line with the -- with the allies and nato. i think what you get a sense of it is the way that the ukrainian leadership is concerned that russia may try to spin this against them and of course that investigation will undoubtedly try to find out what russian missile was flying in that area, what was its intended target or was it, indeed, flag close to the border to induce ukraine to try and shoot it down in an area where this sort of inches doesn't could happen? of course, the kremlin is saying that ukraine is sort of fabricating this scenario to try to build tensions so i think what we're getting a sense of politically and militarily from the ukrainians is let's wait to see where the evidence leads.

we want to have a hand in working to find out what all the details are and our information that we have is all readily available. i think the situation has moved on from that moment when president zelenskyy spoke with journalists and president biden commented on it. >> thankfully the mood has changed. when this first happened, people were very worried about this whole thing escalating and affecting nato and nato being drawn in. how do you think that deescalation worked? it seemed effective. elise? >> the polish authorities have from the get-go maintained they are acting with restraint. they want to access all of the information on the ground. the preliminary information, evidence suggests this wasn't a deliberate action but the polish authorities have been clear that

they are carrying out the investigation and that this will be an extensive and multi-phased investigation. and this will take some time. they won't issue any final conclusions until that investigation is complete. we have heard vehement rhetoric with any allegations from the kremlin, from the russian side, the russian ambassador also issuing a statement accusing nato of attempting to launch a proxy war in ukraine. take a listen. >> translator: to involve nato, which is conducting a proxy war with russia, the u.s. military has actively become involved in planning or control. >> they are acting with restraint. they are still stepping up their combat readiness with the polish

embarrassing entertaining exchange to see. how typical is that of the broader relationship and what we understand to be the dynamic between the two men? is that public putdown likely to erode trust and worsen their relationship? >> reporter: it certainly was an awkward exchange, wasn't it sfwh imagine if you're the translator there basically dressing down the prime minister of canada, one of the most important u.s. allies over something that china and particularly xi have long been unappreciative of, which is the leaky nature of western democracies. xi jinping and china, his government, they don't leak things about conversations, but when he is engaging with the western world where it's much more common for the press to learn details of discussions, and there was in fact canadian news cameras that captured that very candid and awkward moment, this is why you see that bit of tension and really kind of a

muscular face-to-face diplomatic approach on the part of xi jinping. people in china are not seeing that clip because they're not showing it on chinese state media. those who are on the web for china, perhaps some of the diplomatic warriors have been praising him for standing up in that situation. and in terms of justin trudeau himself, he dismissed the severity of this incident. this is just one of those things that happens when you're getting together and having frank conversations. >> translator: listen, i think that people know that not all the conversations are going to be easy with the other leaders, especially when it comes to issues that are sources of disag disagreement. >> reporter: beginning on monday in bali when xi jinping met with the u.s. president joe biden for three hours, a diplomatic reset between the u.s. and china as both try to avoid a

confrontation, xi pushing back on the narrative of some sort of battle between autocracy and democracy. the system is chinese style democracy. after that meeting with the u.s. president he met with four u.s. allies, australia, france, netherlands, south korea. he'll be meeting with the japanese prime minister and certainly a whirlwind of activities, face-to-face interactions to make up for lost time. three years of self-imposed pandemic isolation. >> will ripley, thank you so much. interesting it's being blocked in china. xi jinping comes across as the more dominant, in control party. >> the fact it was compounded by conversation about the leak being leaked, it was meant to be a private conversation with a canadian camera there. yeah, it was a moment, wasn't it? also effectively accusing
