1:00 am
>> announcer: this is cnn breaking news. hello and welcome to our
1:01 am
viewers joining us in the united states and all around the world. i'm bianca nobilo. >> i'm max foster. wednesday, november 23rd. 9 a.m. in london. the 4 a.m. in chesapeake, virginia, where multiple people have been killed at a shooting at walmart. the gunman is an employee or former employee who walked into a break room and killed employees. >> the shooter is thought to have turned the gun on himself and police confirm he is dead. >> officers responded and members of the fire department responded. we did a tactical entrance and movement in the buildings. located multiple fatalities and multiple injured persons. little while later through the course of providing treatment we
1:02 am
were able to establish we believe it's a single shooter and that single shooter is deceased at this time. >> walmart has released a statement saying we're shocked at this tragic event in our chesapeake, virginia, store. are praying for those impacted, our community and associates. we're working closely with law enforcement and are focused on supporting our associates. we just got the first video from a reunification center in chesapeake where families are gathering to meet their loved ones. >> we spoke with a relative of one of the shooting victims being treated at a nearby hospital in norfolk, virginia. >> we went in at 10 p.m. tonight and we received a phone call, his wife received a phone call about 10:18 saying that he had been shot. at the time that's all that we knew, that he had been shot. we didn't know how -- you know, what was really strange to us is
1:03 am
he clocks in at 10 so he hadn't even been there 10 minutes. he was shot in the side. he is up talking, breathing. they don't have a lot of details now. >> one walmart shopper texted her daughter. i'm at walmart, there's an active shooter. her daughter pleads with the mother to go and hide. >> the mother says somebody is dead on the floor. the police are here now. the daughter tells cnn she had just spoken with her mother about buying turkeys for thanksgiving. she said her mother is still in shock. they've been rae united. we spoke to josh campbell. we asked him what he's been able to glean from the details that we have so far. >> reporter: there's the customer area which most of us are used to being in. you go, you buy your items, you check out and you leave. there's a separate segregated area for the employees where
1:04 am
they have their down time. this shooting took place primarily inside that area. so that's key for investigators because that tells you that the person a peerts to have at least some access or familiarity to that particular area and, secondly, looking at the timing of the shooting, we're told this took place just around the 10 p.m. local hour. this store itself closed an hour later. we have covered so many shootings and this is a -- not to get too morbid. if you were a shooter intent on causing widespread carnage, that's not the time of day you would be trying to cause mass damage. this is an injustice shooter. that will all come to light as investigators continue to conduct their investigation. >> reactions to the shooting are pouring in.
1:05 am
virginia senator and former state governor mark warner tweeted he's, quote, sickened by reports of yet another mass shooting. >> l. louise lukas vowed she will not rest until a solution is found to end the gun violence in the u.s. she spoke with cnn saying the issue has spiralled out of control. >> it's absolutely horrible and the thing that makes this so sad is that this gun control -- this gun violence is out of control and unfortunately we have the power to do something about it. this is not the will and heart of many of our legislators to do it. all i can say to you, this is a sad night for us in virgin be yeah and it's going to be a really, really sad time tomorrow morning when people wake up and hear this sad news but we can do something about gun control. there's too much easy access to firearms and we have got to do something to bring it under control. many of us have been fighting in
1:06 am
the legislature for decades to try to get gun control measures passed but unfortunately there's always push back, push back, push back. we've got to bring it under control. how many be people will have too die before legislatures not only in virginia and across the nation have to come to reality there's just too much access for firearms. >> we'll have much more on the story throughout the hour. turning now over to colorado where the suspects in the mass shooting at an lgbtq nightclub is due to an initial court a earns poob. >> anderson lee aldrich was released from hospital and brought to jail. >> any single person who is there could be charged with. obviously five murders and the question will be are others requesting to be charged with attempted murder. obviously clearly people have been assaulted with a deadly
1:07 am
weapon. there are going to be a lot of charges here. the prosecutor's office i know will be working hard to be thorough. the police department working with the fbi are getting all the facts. it's really important we're able to honor victims and to be able to call out this crime for what it appears to be which is a hate crime motivated by who people were. >> we've learned from new court filings that aldrich identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronounce. two explosions that hit different parts of the city today are suspected of being a combined terror attack. at least one person is dead and several others injured. authorities are looking for the suspects. >> let's go to hadas gold. >> reporter: bianca, this is the scene of the first blast that took place at 7 a.m. police are still gathering evidence. we've seen emergency services
1:08 am
wiping up blood. we've seen them gathering shrapnel. i've seen rather large nails and they have been placed inside potentially parcels or bags in an explosion that went off after 7 a.m. 30 minutes later there was another explosion at another bus stop down the hill not far from where we're standing. in both explosions, both attacks, 14 people have been injured and we've just learned a 16-year-old is the one who has died from his injuries. he was here at the bus stop when the attack took place. he was a 16-year-old religious yashiba student. this is a deadly escalation. bombs like these, parcel bombs placed at bus stations and detonated remotely, israel hasn't sign attacks like these in years.
1:09 am
this was like in the early 2000s. this is something that israelis have grown rather used to not seeing. despite this being a very violent year for israelis and palestinians, most have been knife attacks, shootings, rammings. on the israeli side, the west bank is a volatile area. more have been killed in any year since 2015. we've seen the lives of new militant groups. the israeli prime minister said he's going to be holding a situation assessment and we'll be in talks with the incoming prime minister with benjamin netanyahu again. this is a quickly developing situation. coord
1:10 am
coordinated double attacks, the likes of which they have not seen in a long time. the biggest concern is whether there will be more such attacks, more up coordinated attacks. max and bianca, the ground has felt very dry for potentially something very big. the question is the third antti fattah. >> it will be a busy travel day across the united states. aaa estimates 55 million americans will be traveling for the thanksgiving holiday. that's the highest number in three years. >> today will be the busiest day of the long holiday weekend with more than 48,000 flights scheduled. the tsa predicts more than 2 million people will pass through airport checkpoints which will be a new high. >> the one thing that could get in the way is the weather. karen mcginnis is tracking the flights and the weather. from atlanta, you've got good news, karerere >> looks like most of the country is going to escape
1:11 am
really terrible winter-like weather conditions. we do have a storm system moving into the northern rockies. that may produce snowfall. it looks like the delay for salt lake city and denver. we think it will primarily be volume delays across the northeast and into new england. that's where we have problems where the flights get backed up, they stall a little bit. it's not going to be weather related. however, as we go into friday, different story. weather system develops across the south central u.s. as a result boston, new york, newark, those areas will be impacted by weather so you might anticipate those minor delays becoming more moderate delays. in houston, it's rain. if you were to travel towards midland, amarillo, this will be an icy mix or perhaps some snow. either way we have cold air on
1:12 am
the back side. along the i-10 corridor, look for wet weather, heavy at times. mild in washington, d.c., even chicago. we'll see about 52 degrees and what about new york city for the big parade? well, it's cold but it's going to be relatively mild. doesn't look like wind is going to be a problem there. the temperatures 30s and into the 40s. what about for sunday? everybody trying to get back home so work can start on monday. chicago, it looks like that may be a little problematic as that storm system moves across the region. delays could be a little more significant from boston, new york, newark, philadelphia, washington, d.c. look for delays there. atlanta, lots of people crowding into the world's busiest airport. millions will move through the
1:13 am
thresholds here trying to get into or out of the city. we could see the development of santa ana winds. word about that rainfall i was telling you about. dallas, houston, new orleans, jackson, mississippi south of atlanta. that's where the congregation of the heaviest precipitation will be noted. a couple of inches for the most part in most of those areas, but this is a vilg storm system across the south central united states, back side of it as i mentioned that's where the snow or the icy mixture will be located and we'll start to see by saturday area of low pressure move off the eastern seaboard. right back to the messy weather from the great lakes to mid-atlantic and down towards florida. hope everyone has a great holiday. back to you guys. >> karen, thank you. good news, christmas is not canceled. >> you have the authority to say that? >> i do. i do. >> i knew you were santa claus. >> this according to brian dodge, the president of the
1:14 am
retailer indus strifd region saying there is enough in stock. >> a prolonged rail strike could cause product shortages and price increases. the retail industry leaders association has been in touch with santa. biden and congress trying to avoid a strike. i hope there are no kids watching this. >> they clearly know the presents are delivered by sleigh. >> yes. obviously we should remind them of that. >> in the u.k. it's a different story. there will be rail strikes that will affect christmas. >> yes. >> we just hope people get together. we'll have more on the deadly shooting at a walmart in chess is a peebk, virginia. and a big announcement on u.s. college loans as president biden tries to cancel debt for millions of americans.

1:24 am
decision. president biden offered this explanation for why he called for the extension. >> it isn't fair to ask tens of millions of borrowers to resume their debt payments while the courts consider the lawsuit. for that reason the secretary of education is extending the pause on student loan payments while we seek relief from the courts. >> reporter: the president's student loan forgiveness program, which could offer up to $20,000 worth of relief for elg lidge quibble borrowers, has been on hold for several weeks. they've gone to the supreme court asking them to allow for the implementation while the legal challenges play out. 26 million people have applied for the student loan relief. 60 million have been accepted and approved. the department of education has notified people they can't discharge that debt with this program currently tied up in the courts. so many people have been facing questions about whether the

1:31 am
definitely making progress. what that means is they've interviewed more than 90 people and chased hundreds of leads. they've received quite a number of submissions. investigators are combing through the very large video files to see what may be relevant to happened over to the detectives on this case. i did ask about the general threat level to the community. after all, a suspect has not been caught. the spokesperson tells me people do need to being vigilant. here's what he said. >> any time there's a person free there's always a threat to the community when the suspect or suspect are out in the community. yes, there are threats. we recognize that. it's always wise to lock your doors, lock your cars, there is somebody or some people out there somewhere that are murderers and we wiant to find

three of these judges were appointed by republicans, two of them even appointed by former president trump, but based on the questions that they were lobbing at attorneys, things did not appear to go well for the former president. they asked questions including whether this was going to set some sort of special precedent and whether people who were not a president would ask for this review. they asked why the special master was put in place while it was never deemed to be unlawful. one of the judges chastised an attorney as what happened at mar-a-lago as a, quote, rape. did not get a decision in this case but there's a lot riding on be this. the if they win here it would likely be appealed to the supreme court. it could help them move their investigation along just a little bit faster. paula reid, cnn, atlanta. u.s. senator lindsey graham

information, he's going to meet with them and he said the meeting would take place. he says such meetings are often on the agenda and he likes to keep up to date with what's really going on on the ground with russia, what they call the special military operation. obviously that war effort in ukraine. what's happened since then is some mother's organizations have come out and said they haven't been invited to such a meeting. especially one mother's organization that's been fairly critical of some of the things that have been going on that have called for their men to have better conditions on the battlefield but of course in training as well. they say so far they've not received an invitation to that. certainly something that has made some of these mother's organizations quite angry. it really is something that is quite important here in russia, guys. the mothers carry a lot of sway traditionally. not just since what has been going on in ukraine. over the decades they've been extremely important as far as russian opinion is concerned.
