his path to the nba. we will hear don's great interview with the legend himself. >> first, co-workers say that he exhibited odd and sometimes threatening behavior. he killed six people before taking his own life. diane gallagher is live for us in chesapeake, virginia this morning. hello to you. >> reporter: hello, don. look, there are state and federal authorities out here on scene this morning. police told me today that they're still working to determine a motive for this shooting. look, the victims' families are trying to come to terms with life without them and the survivors of the shooting are still trying to process of the trauma of something to them they say still doesn't feel real. harrowing stories of survival after another mass shooting. >> the only thing that made it

real was the vibrations hitting your chest and the ringing from the gun going off. and it just kept going and going and going. >> reporter: jesse, a new employee, hid under a table until she came face to face with the shooter. >> and he just had the gun up to my forehead and it's just really hard. he told me to go home. >> the city of chesapeake identifying the shooter as 31-year-old andre bing. walmart confirms he was an overnight team lead. according to employees, bing entered the break room just as employees were clocking in to start their shifts. >> just left out of the break room, [ bleep ], started capping people up in there, started shooting. >> investigators were seen searching the alleged shooter's home. police say the gunman was armed

with several magazines and a pistol. brianna tyler said there were around 15 people in the break room. >> he didn't say a word, he didn't look at anyone specific, he just had a blank stare on his face and he literally looked around the room and just shot. >> reporter: six employees were shot and killed, including a 16-year-old. police believe the gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. according to police, two employees were found dead in the break room. another victim was found in the front of the store and three victims were taken to local hospitals but later died. 26-year-old jaylen jones was in the break room and shot multiple times, including in his back, his mother told our affiliate. >> he was on a ventilator, he was unable to breathe on his

own. but now he's talking. he's just glad to be alive. >> reporter: in our discussions with survivors, employees and former employees who did work with the shooter, all of them had similar feelings about what it was like to be around him. they described him as exhibiting odd or even threatening behaviors at times. they talked about the fact that he enjoyed his position of power. some people described him as mean. now look, don, we have asked walmart if there were any official complaints that were logged against him but they have not answered our questions. >> diane gallagher, thank you very much. >> and now to another mass shooting in america, the mass shooting over the weekend at the colorado lgbtq night club. the suspect is being held this morning without bond after making his first appearance in court, preliminary charges include five counts of first degree murder and five counts of a bias motivated crime.

nick watt joins us live in kol come springs. you spoke to the neighbor of the shooter as well. what can you tell us about all of it this morning? >> reporter: well, you mentioned those charges there, poppy. by december 6th, the d.a. here hopes to prove those bias related charges. they need to prove, they need to figure out what the motive was here. sure looks like hate but they need to prove that in order to levy those bias related charges. the appearance was interesting. video link from this jail behind me, the suspect was slumped, orange jump suit, heavy buzing fro bruising the suspect took while being subdued in the club that night. name said "yup," did watch the video about rights, "no," did not have any questions.

this issue of pronounce. the lawyer of the suspect now say the suspect identifies as non-binary. the d.a. was asked repeatedly by reporters is this going to have any bearing one go from here? and the d.a. was adamant, no, makes no difference to the investigation or the prosecution. this is a suspect. the pronounce have no relevance. poppy. >> and i wonder, nick, what you heard when you spoke to a neighbor of the shooter. >> reporter: well, not just a neighbor, a friend. they bonded, they lived across the hallway, bonded over playing video games. a couple of things really stuck out to me that this young man, xavier told me. first was this suspect is not someone i would have around my gay friends. apparently the suspect did have occasional outbursts, some directed at the gay community, other directed at other races.

it's interesting, he was also telling me that after the suspect was involved in this bomb threat on his mother, after that case was dropped and sealed, xavier krause hoped that his friend might get life back on track and clearly that didn't happen. krause says we were about the same age. krause said it really struck me. i was living across the hall with my girl friend, the suspect was living on the other side with their mother. and, you know, he also said that the suspect was very proud of the weapons and showed them off to krause and that made krause feel a little uncomfortable. he raised that and the suspect said, you know, it's not the guns you got to be afraid of, bro, it's the people. and krause said that has really sort of sat with him. he feels terrible for his friend, terrible for the victims and we can't make this all about

>> we were just shy of the record we saw on july 1st when 2 opinion 9 million people passed through the airport for that long 4th of july holiday weekend. what's really interesting, there is this new trend. this rush is really getting longer because folks are able to work from home. we've been averaging 2.3 million people a day at airports nationwide beep may see big peaks and not big rallies because trends have changed, people are able to work from home. the one good thing here is that things are really smooth for the airlines and passengers have had a pretty good experience because frankly the weather has been pretty good and cancellations pretty low. so that is good news, especially it paels in comparison to the huge cancellation numbers we saw

yada, yada, yada, what does all this do for trump? does it matter? >> i think it depends, don, on what mike pence would say but mike pence is a key witness who is one of the only people who would speak to events in the leadup to january 6th. this would create such an unprecedented situation, a former vice president and potential candidate, potentially testifying or being interviewed against a former president who is a candidate, all of this being investigated by a justice department in an administration with a sitting president who is likely to run again. so we are just uncharted territory. >> can we talk about alaska and sara palin? what happened to the darling of

the party? she's lost twice. >> alaska is a strange state. cup get crossover votes with democrats and independents. it's an unusual situation. but look, i think sarah palin had a moment in time. i think she helped usher this new party and i think donald trump inherited some of what she brought in but at a certain point you actually have to win elections and to keep saying you're going to win and you're strong and your brand of politics is strong and to not win is going to raise a lot of questions. that's the same questions the former president is going to face. >> this is someone who trump vehemently campaigned against. she voted to convict him during the second impeachment trial and voted against a number of keefe things in his presidency. but what i thought was interesting about murkowski

winning is this sort of coalition that she built across the aisle in alaska. >> i think that murkowski is a well liked poll sigitician in t state, that she's seen as delivering to are that state. and in d.c., even though we're not in d.c. but we cover d.c. and i think folks that are in d.c. and around it tend to be more removed from the delivery of services of government. she's seen as being effective at that generally speaking and that wt lets you win in senate races often is what lets you win in governors' races and it's how you behave in connection with the services people want. i think that brand is based on something substantive. >> again, i keep going to what it portends for the future, right, because we have the mid terms behind us and you have

someone like senator murkowski who is -- i guess you could say she is moderate. i wonder if the republican party is actually listening to the voters because you have kevin mccarthy out there saying we're going to do these investigations, you have hunter biden, you have all of these things. not to say that investigations shouldn't happen but are they in tune with where the american people stand right now and what they're interested in, what's important to them? >> i think that kevin mccarthy is going to get squeezed on to engage in a lot of these investigations whether he wants to or not. whether that is where the public is i think is an open question. i think we have certainly seen in previous, you know, years and in previous congresses when congress is perceived as overreaching on certain investigations and whether they get too personal. i do think there is an appetite among the pretty wide cross section of republicans in the house for activity and

investigations related to biden. i'm not sure how wide the appetite is for investigations related to investigating the work that's been done already by the house select committee on january 6th. that's another question mccarthy is getting pressured on by some corners of the house republican group. and so, you know, i think it's a huge open question but because republicans did not get this overwhelming win in the mid terms, i do think that they are going to face questions about what kind of mandate they are taking the gavel with. >> important question, maggie and this behind the scenes here. either you're an all--in thanksgiving everything or you're going to go to the chinese restaurant so where do you stand with this? >> i am cooking a lot. >> see, she does it all. she does it all. >> it's an unexpected situation but i'm cooking everything. >> wow. so bring us some samples tomorrow. we would luke some leftovers and

roll, brother, go get another one." yes, sir. >> i sat down with the nba legacy to talk about his life on and off the court. joining me now is shaquille o'neal. how do you doing, brother? >> i'm doing very well. how are you doing, sir? >> i'm doing well. you shared all these insecurities growing up. you say you weren't very good. now you're a legend. why are you talking about this now when you're a basketball legend? >> you know, i felt it was time. most of the time i only give people part of me. i like to be a jovial guy, a friendly guy, nice guy but i wasn't always like that through trials and tribulations, you now have the character known as shaq. but what was a really rough lifestyle kind of, listened to

my parents, listened to my coaches and followed my dreams and never gave up and we all know the end result. so my message to the children is always listen to your mommy and daddy because they know best. >> look, i relate to this because i was tall and then i stopped, i didn't get as tall as you. >> you were never tall, don, stop it. you were never tall, stop it. >> i grew fast but i was never very good at basketball. you say you weren't particularly good at basketball, you weren't particularly good at sports. i can relate to that. but you put in the hard work. you got your legs and your arms coordinated. the sport didn't exactly come easy to you. i imagine that's another message you want to share with kids. >> yeah, you just have to -- listen, it's not going to come tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow. you have to work and continue to work. i really would like to thank julius irving and magic johnson

for inspiring. when i thought i wasn't good, i thought to myself i want to be like dr. j and others for inspiring to be who i am today. >> it wasn't until recently that you realized that i actually went to lsu. >> i never knew that. >> i know. you met dale brown, who was the head basketball coach there. when i started going there in '84, i was on the ten-year plan. you met him when he visited your school at a military base in germany. why lsu? why did you think he and >> when i was 13 years old and nobody thought i could play and nobody thought i was good, i went to watch this coach speak. i asked how can i strengthen my lower extremities. before i went to see him, i went to the dictionary and sound smart. the word i came upon was

extremities. i said, coach, can you send me a program to help me strengthen my lower extremities. he sent me the program. did everything to the t. i said i'm going to join the army. he wrote me a letter back. he said, nope, here is a scholarship. if you want, you can become manager, assistant coach. i want you to get your education. i'll pay for it because i like you, i like your approach. i'll pay for your schooling. he offered to pay for my school. i left germany and went back to texas and became the number one high school player. all these schools wanted me. i was like, you know what, before i was the shaq and nobody knew who i was, darrell brown who i was. i decided to go to lsu. >> you did three seasons before turning pro your senior year. this documentary digs into that decision to go pro. do you still think that was the right choice? >> i think it was the right choice. i think i was actually too good

for college basketball. it was at a point to financially help my family out. kied doughs to my mother and father. i wanted to come out my sophomore year. my father said, we've been broke for 17 years. we can be broke for 18 years. he wasn't concerned or impressed that i could have possibly been the number one pick and make a lot of money. he wanted me to have an education. >> speaking of being -- >> great parenting right there. >> speaking of being too good. 1992 rookie of the year, numerous all-star games, finalist mvp awards. only one of three players to win the mvp award and final mvp in the same year. michael jordan and willis reed being the only other two. you have four nba championship rings. what does that mean to you? do you ever think about that? what are the highlights for you? >> it means that a young

medium-level juvenile delinquent, when he decided to listen, learn how to be a leader instead of a follower changed his life, changed his family's life. he was able to follow all his dreams. there was points where i used to do a lot of irrational thinking and do a lot of crazy things. my father came and said, hey, man, you're 13 now, you're going to be a man in four years. four years you're going to go to college and be by yourself. one day you'll get married, have children, if things are done right, you can do movies, rap albums. drill sergeant told me all the things that came true in my life. once i decided to listen, they all came true. >> you lhinted last month you will be an owner with an nba team. what's going on with that? >> i'm still working on it. i wish i could give you more. >> okay. is that good news? >> yeah, i think it is. i don't like to come out and say i'm doing this and doing that. i like to wait until the deal is
