jinping to step down. that can be a dangerous thing to say publically in china. the police response has been brutal, video showing protesters being pushed and beaten. and watch this, the moment a bbc journalist was taken into custody in shanghai. the bbc saying the journalist was kicked and handcuffed for hours before being released. selena wang is live in beijing for cnn this morning. hello to you. these protests are historic. what is going on there? >> reporter: don, it is surreal, unbelievable. last night i was in the middle of a protest against beijing, not just against covid but the regime itself. this happening in an authoritarian regime. lots of mostly young people there for hours in the cold,

chanting over and over we don't want covid tests. we want freedom. we want to be unsealed. many people holding white papers in their hands. a sign of solidarity against censorship. they sang and cheered, cars driving by honking in spo support. i spoke to one protester and asked how he was feeling. this is what he told me. >> translator: i'm overwhelmed. every chinese should be here. they don't have to voice their opinions, but i hope they can stand with us. and, don, there was a heavy police presence there the entire time, but after 2:00 a.m. you saw rows of police, masses of them filing in, pushing everybody back. basically forming a wall to get us to disperse, an unprecedented level of public decent since xi jinping took power a decade ago, not just happening in the big cities but across the country. >> we understand that a bbc

reporter was arrested, beaten by the authorities. what are they saying about that this morning and has he been released? >> yes, the bbc is saying that he was held for several hours, then he was released during the arrest he was beaten and kicked by the police. they said in their statement, the bbc said, they received no official explanation or apology from the chinese authority, the business authority saying there can be no excuse whatsoever for a journalist covering the process going on for being beaten by police. video shows there was a more violent response at the shanghai protests, many scenes of police dragging, pushing, beating people. critical soccer match has been overshadowed by what has turned into a geopolitical statement. iran is demanding the united

states be kicked out entirely after the u.s. soccer federation changed the iranian flag on the social media platforms. the countries play tomorrow. the u.s. needs to win to advance. amanda davies is live this morning in doha, qatar. iran says the u.s. cannot play and u.s. soccer is speaking out explaining why it did this. >> good morning, poppy. u.s. soccer saying this is a show of support for women in iran, fighting for basic human rights. we know there was always going to be a political backdrop to this match between iran and the usa. on sunday, u.s. soccer bringing the politics very much to the forefront with this action. they've said it's a one-time move for 24 hours. and it's only on their social media platforms that they've changed the logo.

iran for their part calling for the u.s. to be thrown out of this world cup, to be handed a ten-match suspension. fifa, world football's governing body haven't commented, while u.s. soccer haven't revealed who was behind the decision, how many people were involved in taking this moment as so often is left to the players to publically front up and speak. and this is what u.s. defender tim riem had to say. >> like i said, we support women's rights. we always have, always will. that message will remain cons consistent. and what we're doing as a team is supporting that while also trying to prepare for the biggest game this squad has had to date. >> reporter: it is the biggest game this squad has had to date. but the u.s. boss and his

iranian counterpart fronting up to the media a little bit later on monday. you suspect this will be the topic that dominates the headlines, despite the high stake consequences of tuesday's game. >> we've -- as we've learned through this world cup, it is about so much more than soccer. thank you, amanda, very much. joining us now to talk about all of this and for perspective is former national team players, charlie davies, thank you for being on set with us. you saw amanda's report there, and now you're seeing iran say the u.s. should be kicked out all together. what do you think? >> if i was a player in the locker room, i would think this is distraction. this is an opportunity for iran to try to take all the focus that the u.s. national team has on the game, knowing it's win or go home to try to throw that doubt into the locker room to make them talk about other things rather than going out and winning the game. >> you think that's what iran is trying to do? >> i do. >> but the bigger message here

and what the united states has done and taken a stand for human rights in this way. you played 17 times on the national team. are you proud to see this? >> i am, i got to represent the u.s. in the olympics and beijing in 2008. so i know what a sport can do for a country. what the sport can do for the world, and how it united. you look at the u.s. women's national team what they've been able to do in terms of fighting for equity and equality. it's one of those things i can't speak for u.s. soccer but i am proud to be part of u.s. soccer and to represent our sport in this country. >> you can speak for yourself, right? >> yes. >> it's a little bit different now, monday morning quarterbacking, but if you were there, what do you think you'd do? >> i'd be talking with my teammates for sure and saying this is great that we are using our support to try and help women across the globe. but at the same time, we have to go out there and win the game, and if we can win this game and go as far as we can, we can continue to bring up these

topics. i think the iranian women right now are the focus across the world right now because of this sport, because of iran being in the world cup, which is awesome, the idea is to bring up these topics so many different topics with qatar hosting this world cup. but i think what these players are doing, especially the iranian players, to go against a lot of what their country is telling them what to do -- >> you really think you have this much spotlight afterwards? the world's focus won't be on the american team -- not to the extent it is now. you think the impact is now? >> now and in the future. for the u.s. men's national team, they have a job and that is to win this game. at the same time, all these players are being more well informed on women's rights. what iran is bringing to the table. what they're trying to do. they're trying to win as well. the ultimate goal for iran is to continue to progress through the world cup so this topic can

continue to be talked about. >> what's been your takeaway as you've been watching this overall? it's been all of these off the field controversies they've been dealing with, in a way they didn't want to deal with, but that's overshadowed a lot of the games we've been seeing. >> for me i love these games. so many goals and so many exciting moments for the fans to come together. this is why the world cup is so special because you have so many different people from all the countries in the world participating coming together. that's what's so special about it. i think we've seen that, whether it's argentina and mexico, that big rivalry. now with u.s./iran. the fans coming together in the same stadium and celebrating the support together. >> on the flight home on thursday, on thanksgiving, the whole plane was watching the world cup. my husband was watching the serbia match, obviously. you said going into this match

tomorrow against iran, the u.s. has to play like they did against the uk, right? what is that like? >> in terms of the intensity. they have to be aggressive and attack. against wales in the first 45 minutes spectacular, got the goal, up 1-0. then they went into defensive moding, took our foot off the gas and we let wales have the momentum. similar to how england came out and whooped iran, 6-2, we have to do the same thing, be aggressive, be pro pacactive. i think if we do that, they'll win the game. >> thank you for being here. these are important topics. >> thank you for having me. a white supremacist and a holocaust denier dining with donald trump at mar-a-lago. why the ex-president is now lashing out at kanye west. plus. >> two people in a plane crash

evening. want to go there now with pete mun muntean. good morning to you, pete. good morning to the folks rescued. obviously the incident was terrible. how were they able to make the rescue happen. >> reporter: good morning, don. for those folks now on the ground after those long, cold, dark hours in that single engine plane that rescuers left the folks inside dangling there for hours as they tried to figure out how to safely cut off the power of these high tension wires. this plane crashed into these wires at about 5:30 last night. but it wasn't until well after midnight that the crews were able to start the rescue. they came up using a cherry picker and were able to get the pilot and passenger off one by one. that process in and of itself took about an hour. what is so interesting here is that the ground crews were able to communicate with those on board the plane using a cell

phone. and incredibly, they weren't all that hurt. i want you to listen now to one of the 100 firefighters on the scene here, who says it really wasn't until folks were on the ground that they were able to learn the true extent of their injuries. listen. >> both patients have been transported from the scene to local area trauma centers with serious injuries. there is a hypothermia issue as well, but there's also orthopedic and trauma injuries from the crash. >> reporter: what is also so interesting here, don, is that that plane was removed from the power lines around 2:00 this morning. the faa and ntsb will investigate. really out sized impact of this crash here, about 120,000 people at one point were without power here in montgomery county, one of the wealthiest counties in the u.s. not to mention at one point schools were closed. they will still be closed even though power has been restored

to so many people here in montgomery county. this is a huge issue. power lines were out, traffic lights were out. things are getting back to normal now. pepco is on the scene making repairs to the infrastructure and making sure things are back to normal. >> i know the investigation is still under way, it's been a few hours since the accident happened. but you're a pilot, how could you see something like this happening? >>. >> reporter: i think the thing investigators have to key in on here first is the weather. it was so bad here last night that commercial flights going into reagan national airport at some points couldn't get in. so at one point the weather was 200 overcast, there was a cloud layer only 200 feet above the ground here. the montgomery county airport, only about a mile away, so the question is the pilot's decision making, why did they choose to

press on when the weather was so poor last night and could they see the high tension wires as they were coming in to land. >> a lot of fog. pete muntean, thank you. this morning we're learning more about why nfl player odell beckham jr. was kicked off an american airlines flight monday morning. the flight crusade he didn't respond to requests to fasten his seat belt. his lawyer said he was sleeping and this is a case of a flight attendant being overzealous. let's go to layla santiago. >> reporter: it was just about this time 24 hours ago that odell beckham jr. was about to get on a flight to go to l.a. ultimately being escorted off the flight by police, saying he forgot to comply with safety protocols. let's read together the statement from miami-dade police as to what they say happened. they said the flight crew was

concerned for a passenger, as they tried to wake him to fasten his seat belt. he appeared to be coming in and out of consciousness prior to his departure. upon the officer's arrival, the flight crew asked mr. beckham several times to exit the aircraft, which he refused. the aircraft was deplaned at which time mr. beckham was asked to exit the airplane, which he did without incident. at this point no charges or investigation, but quite a different take from his attorney. he was saying this wasn't necessary at all. >> is beckham saying anything himself this morning? >> reporter: yeah. so he tweeted, right around the time this happened, he tweeted out and said, never in my life have i experienced what just happened to me. i have seen it all. that was tweeted right around the time that many folks watched as officers pulled him off that plane. again, without incident. so let's get the details from

his side. because his attorney explains it, as you said, as an o overzealous flight attendant saying they didn't allow mr. beckham to fasten his seat belt, and instead removed everyone from the plane, calling it completely unnecessary. painting the picture of he was just asleep. >> leyla santiago, many more answers needed i think. thanks for your reporting from miami. former president trump is now attempting to explain why he hosted a holocaust denier at mar-a-lago. we'll get more from a former trump official. and the conditions brittney griner is likely to face in a russian penal colony.

who announced his third bid for the white house, sought to defend himself arguing he never met and new nothing about nick fuentes beforehand and the dinner was initially supposed to be him and kanye west, who has his own history of anti-semitic remarks. while it remains unclear how much trump knew about nick fuentes before their dinner he hasn't denounced fuentes' views, he's a holocaust denier and known for running the america first organization, which seeks to forge a white nationalist alternative to the main stream gop. >> we have got the white chri christian men who built this country the first time and we'll do it again. >> reporter: nick fuentes also recently called for the military to be sent into black neighborhoods. >> just sent the military in.

themselves up for disaster in 2024. >> the big question is why? why would he meet with him? joining us now is the former assi assistant deputy of state for the trump administration, and he's jewish. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. >> why would he do it? >> you're asking me to get into his thinking. but what i can do is, i can give you my perspective, which is unique, i think. you mentioned that i work for the trump administration, i did, and i'm proud of our record on many issues, including issues related to the jewish community and the jewish state of israel. i'm also a refugee from the soviet union and a grandson of holocaust survivors. so i experienced systemic anti-semitism directly and personally, which is why my

family sought refuge in the united states. so i can tell an anti-semite when i hear one. and i tell you with confidence that president trump is not an anti-semite. he also has a strong record on issues that concern the jewish community. we can start with any number of things like making it tougher to discriminate against jewish students at college campuses. >> i understand that, but can we talk about nick fuentes, please. thank you. do you think it would be wrong for the former president to be -- do you think it was wrong for the former president to meet with nick fuentes? >> from what i understand, president trump said he didn't know nick fuentes was coming, and nick fuentes himself, from what i understand, said president trump had no idea who he was at the dinner. so i -- look, let's just call nick fuentes for who he is. he's an anti-semite, he's repulsive, his views are disgusting. and no one of any substance should give him any forum, it's

frankly beneath president trump to meet with him. >> you're saying it was wrong for him to meet with him? >> again, he didn't know he was coming, but it's never a good idea to give anti-semites a forum. what about kanye west, he knew kanye west was coming and kanye west has made any anti-semitic outbursts and statements as recently as a few weeks ago. >> yeah. i think kanye west sounds a like like lou faircan and president trump, i think he wouldn't have met with either one of them frankly. but if we're going to talk about main streaming of anti-semitism we have to be fair. if we're going to make trump repudiate kanye or a side kick. we have to look at anti-semitism in the halls of congress from rashida talib to aoc. >> they're not president of the united states.

>> we have to look at the -- >> sir, they're not the president of the united states. he's the former president of the united states. this is not what aboutism. he met with an anti-semite. so can we stick to the former president and not do what aboutism. we can talk about those other people when there are issues, but there aren't issues right now. don't you think the former president, considering what is happening, the investigation at mar-a-lago, the documents, the types of people who might have access to classified documents, beyond the anti-semitism, you don't think the former president shouldn't know who he's meeting with and letting into his home? >> i will give you that, yes, of course, he should know who he's meeting with. he did meet with kanye. >> it sounds like you're making excuses for him. you say he should know who he's meeting and and then you said he didn't know.

it sounds like you're making excuses, there's no excuses for bad behavior, anti-semitism and being the former president and not knowing who you're allowing into a place where you kept clas classified documents. >> i would appreciate it if you didn't put words in my mouth. here's what i'm concerned with. i'm concerned with the main streaming of anti-semitism wherever it comes from. i condemn ckanye west's anti-semitism. >> do you condemn the former president for meeting with anti-semites. you said you condemn anti-s anti-semitism, do you condemn the former president for meeting withanti-semites? for entertaining anti-semites and anti-semitism? >> let me explain it to you this way, sir. i know the president is not an anti-semite.

>> i'm not asking you if he's an anti-semite. i'm asking if you condemn him for entertaining and meeting with anti-semites. it's a simple question. >> i'm trying to give you an answer. i wish he wouldn't have met with him. >> it's a yes or no. >> i didn't realize i was on the witness stand here, don. look, i'm trying to have a substantive conversation about a real issue like anti-semitism anti-s and you're trying to make it all about trump. >> it is about trump. sir, we're talking about the former president, meeting with an anti-semite, how is this not about trump? >> because it's about the anti-semitism. it's not about trump. it's about making sure that the issue of anti-semitism is confronted in a way -- in a substantive way. in which -- obviously, i'm sure you're aware there's rising

anti-semitism in the united states and the world. it's important for us to take it on. it's important for us to call it out. i am calling it out. i'm saying he should not have met with kanye west and a sidekick. what i'm also trying to point out, don, is that it bhoehooves you and cnn and every other press outlet to call it out when you see it, especially when it comes in the halls of congress, especially whenever democratic presidential hopeful goes and kisses the ring -- >> cnn does that. and when the issue is someone in the halls of congress or in the government who is trafficking in anti-semitism, cnn will call it out. this is about donald trump meeting with a known anti-semite and someone who traffics in anti-semitism, this is not about any other people who may have trafficked in anti-semitism. when they do it we'll discuss it and have you on to discuss that part of it.

so let's stick to donald trump and nick fuentes and kanye west. can we do that? >> we are doing that, don. if you're going to make me, you know, do a yes or no with you. yes or no should alan amar be condemned, should rashida talib be condemned? yes or no should -- >> this is not about president obama. >> this is not about jeremiah wright. this is about donald trump and nick fuentes. >> why don't you want to talk about the problem -- >> because they're not meeting with them at their homes. they're not meeting with anti- anti-semites. and the reason you were invited on the program was to talk about donald trump, this weekend, meeting with known anti-semites. and whether you condemn it as someone who worked for the administration and who is jewish. that's what this story is about. that's what you're here to talk about. >> i see, don.

so if there's an answer you want from me, why don't you tell me what that answer would be -- >> that answer would be -- that answer would be one of not what aboutism. it would be one to directly address the situation at hand. it would be one to not what about anti-semitism. it's right -- you think it's okay or it's wrong? was it wrong to meet with him, the answer is yes, it was wrong to meet with him. should he have met with him, the answer is no, he should not have met with him. the answer is very simple. >> don, it's very rich when you're telling somebody who is jewish who has experienced anti-semitism firsthand who is a grandson of holocaust survivors what is an appropriate way to address anti-semitism. frankly it is insulting. >> it's insulting for you to think i don't understand bigotry and racist. i understand.
