with another record set in the final day of early voting in the georgia senate runoff, the interest in the race clearly is high. with that said, the outcome can only be determined by voters on tuesday. it remains to be seen by which meant, pastor warner the. here is a title, provocative and the questions about walker reeves, herschel walker's candidacy is more interesting now that the senate control is decided. why do you think the runoff, is it more interesting now? >> first of all, thank you very much for having me, anderson. i find it more interesting because it isn't just about the legislative process of congress. this is also looking at the cultural aspect of congress and the cultural aspects of who represents us, and why certain elected officials are holding office. so, i wrote the piece, because you have two black men running for senate in georgia, a state
10:05 pm
that has a very deep and well known history with racism. i was very interested in the question of exactly, what kind of black person, what kind of black leadership are georgians wanting in 2022? >> can you explain why a fund- raising email by save america, connected to foreign president, interested you in this article? >> absolutely. you know, anderson, it gave me something tangible. before, it was all anecdotal are they controlling herschel walker? is he really that involved in his campaign? is he really a serious candidate in terms of how the national party viewed him? the email specifically answer the question, what was happening was, say for instance save america was sending out emails saying, please donate to help save herschel walker's campaign in georgia, but you have to click actual second link within that email in order to designate money going to herschel walker. if you did not do that, 90% of
10:06 pm
that money went to save america and only 10% went to herschel walker here and we know that they did not know this because his campaign manager had to come out publicly and asked republicans to stop doing that. >> so, they were raising money on herschel walker with the idea of herschel walker without actually giving money to herschel walker? >> yes, very much like when herschel walker played in college and they would make money with his face being on t- shirts, jerseys, but herschel walker never saw the money, obviously. it was not what we have today for college athletes. that is pretty much what herschel walker was dealing with as a candidate for senate years >> you wrote in the l.a. times, walker's own party is treating him like a prop with no agency of his own. do you think walker realizes that, or to time to walker's at least seem to realize that? >> again, when you have a campaign manager feeling the need to speak out in public about what was happening in terms of the fundraising email, it does suggest that the party there campaign as a whole, including walker, did not know
10:07 pm
the extent to what was happening . in terms of the overall theme i wrote about, which he was sort of being used as a prop, just the republicans could have a voice and they wanted to use a black person to get that voice in there. i think he is aware he is being utilized in that way, but i don't know if he is processing the larger ramifications of being used like that beyond his personal gain. >> he also said warnock is a perfect litmus test for georgia. >> yes, yes he is, particularly with evangelical christians. this is a man who was, is the pastor of a church, not just a random church this is dr. king's church. this is someone who represents a very, very tense, obviously racial part of georgia. so, when you look at what pastor warnock represents, it is not just about being elected officials, it is also about the history of black people and racism in this country, that is being rejected, in my opinion as well, not just the fact that
10:08 pm
he is a democrat, but what kind of black leader here? >> a fascinating piece. i appreciate you talking about it. thank you. these midterms, in the absence of so-called red wave, prompting a number of of republican call for a reassessment of the party. one former georgia congressman says, republicans should also change the way they think about the democrats and the white house. the piece on his website under the headline, quote, quit underestimating president biden, quote, by all conservatives deeply opposed policies, conservatives hostility to the biting administration on our terms tends to buy blind us to just how effective biden has been on his terms. to talk about it, the political analyst and "new york times" national political reporter, steve herman, also stuart stevens, worked on five presidential campaigns. he is with the lincoln project and a partner in resolute square and a new pro-democracy media platform.
10:09 pm
how likely do you think it is that herschel walker is actually able to pull out a victory, and what would it say if he does? >> i don't think we should underestimate the reality that herschel walker could become a senator. i think that is true because of the realities of georgia. this is not a candidate that is running on the specific message that has an individual appeal. he is kind of running as a cookie cutout of a trump republican. but, for a lot of republicans me that is exactly the point. we talked to him georgia voters for my podcast, the run-up, for the "new york times". what they were saying is that, they were intentionally backing walker because of a thumb their nose to democrats. it was show that a candidate like raphael warnock may be too hard to the left. for a lot of republicans, who will drive this election because it comes out to turn out we come down to a run out, there backing walker simply because of his kind of generic status. i don't think the numbers tell us that is a bad strategy, they

are just hoping republicans outnumber democrats who might be weary from a couple of weeks ago. >> president biden said tonight that walker does not deserve to be in the race. lieutenant governor jeff duncan, a republican said this week, he cannot bring himself to vote for walker. what you think the republican party should learn from how all of this is playing out? >> this really goes back to this lack of understanding of the republican party of why african americans, since 1964, and 90 plus percent have not voted for republicans. clearly what happened here was, people were sitting in a room and said, okay, georgia elected a african american, warnock, let's get this football player, he is black, but he scored more touchdowns and will bring you from texas to georgia. the only reason black voters are voting for warnock because he is black, so we will with the vote. that is a complete misunderstanding of why it is

10:12 pm
black voters, but i would not say we should assume that the selection of someone like herschel walker is even aimed at voters. herschel walker and raphael warnock are two people who have really gotten their most appeal to modern republicans, swing voters, that suburban atlanta voter, who is cross racial, but includes a lot of white college- educated folks. just because you're running a black candidate does not inherently mean you are running that for black voters. i think that george actually is a big example of that. >> the word, this kind of open dissension within house republicans, even if kevin mccarthy is able to capture the speakership, what then? how much control would he have even over his own caucus? >> kevin mccarthy is one of the saddest figures in modern american political history, and that is saying something. a guy that started out to be a reformer has now ended up having negotiate for his life with marjorie taylor green, and

10:14 pm
certain amount of republicans as extreme. we sought independent and swing voters really respond to that. but we haven't seen is democrats make an affirmative message that drives out each corner of their base. yes, he is correct, if republicans continue to tie themselves to where the base of their party is coming it creates an opening for democrats like president biden to continue to run on the extremism on the other side. it is harder for democrats to do is run on the affirmative case that motivates all of their sectors to come out, but republicans are providing them with this escape hatch to allow them not to have to do that. >> appreciate it, thank you. next, an exclusive conversation with ukraine's foreign minister. what he says about the russian attacks in his country what whether he thinks negotiations with moscow is possible to end the fighting. late words on the unsolved mysteries for the murder of four university idaho students.

some new reporting in tonight, a senate aide saying, members will get a classified briefing on ukraine, this comes with the administration advocating for another $70 billion in military aid, which will be attached to a much larger general government spending bill. this, as an campaign is underway to terrorize ukraine and diplomats around the world with a series of letters containing explosives or animal parts. matthew chance joins us now with an exclusive interview with ukraine's foreign minister. what does the foreign minister make of these letters that have been showing up at the ukrainian embassy? >> yeah, i mean, he is
10:20 pm
obviously quite stunned by it. the foreign ministry called us up tonight and said, we want you to come over and speak with the foreign minister because he is so disturbed about what has been taking place in various diplomatic missions for ukraine around the world. these extraordinary letters, some of them obviously very dangerous, but all of them very sort of upsetting. dmytro kuleba is the foreign minister of ukraine . take a listen to how he explains it. >> well, it started with an explosion and the embassy of ukraine in spain, but what followed was this explosion was more weird, and i would even say sick. we started receiving letters with eyes, animal eyes cut off. animal eyes, yes. in some cases, in one case, it is probably the eye of a cow and the eye of a pig in another
10:21 pm
case. >> let me ask you, who do you suspect, who does ukraine's suspect of being behind this? well, of course, i feel tempted to name russia straight away, because first of all you have to answer the question, who benefits from that? it is definitely this campaign is aimed at sowing fear and terrorizing ukrainian diplomats. i think it is either russia itself, or someone who sympathizes with the russian cause. >> well, anderson, for what it's worth, i reached out to the kremlin as well and russian foreign ministry to see if they would respond. they have not gotten back to me. the ukrainian say, their investigations are underway in all of those cities where the letters were sent and i am determined to get to the bottom of this. >> ukraine's president has
10:22 pm
said, there could be more waves of russian military attacks coming in the future. will the foreign ministry say anything about the types of weapons they hope to acquire and defend themselves? >> yeah, of course. every opportunity ukrainian officials get, they sort of recent date this idea they want more weapons from the united states in particular, also other countries as well. the emphasis at the moment is antimissile systems, particularly pipe systems to defend against the massive onslaught of missiles coming from russia, attacking infrastructure targets across the country. again, they have been asking, the foreign minister told me they have been asking this from actually before the war, before the latest invasion began back in february. now is the time, dmytro kuleba said, for decisions on this issue to be made. >> there has been a lot of discussion on going about opening lives with negotiations for russia, and particularly with this war. did he have anything to say about that? >> yeah, i put it to him, this idea that president biden had come out in that press conference, yesterday i think
10:23 pm
it was, with the french leader saying, he would be prepared to speak with president of russia to end this for. and dmytro kuleba, the foreign minister, saying, as long as that is conditional on russia withdrawing from ukrainian territory, the ukrainians were all in favor of that. he made it clear, he did not see any suggestion at this moment, no green shoots at all of any kind of peace process taking place, particularly with this continuing threat of more missile strikes hanging over ukraine. >> i appreciate it, thank you. joining us now, senior military analyst, general mark hurley. in general, what is your reaction about, first of all, these packages sound-- what do you make of that, sending animal lies to embassies? >> the foreign minister said it was weird, anderson, i give it a different word than that,
10:24 pm
which i probably can't repeat on air. it is almost mafia like. it is like putting a horse's head in someone's bed. it is a threat to other countries. they have done it now, by my count, to at least four different embassies. it is beyond weird. you can't say it is russia who is doing it, but all indications matches some of the motive operations they have been using to try and intimidate people to not support ukraine. >> the ukrainian authorities have been asking patriot missile systems, other systems for months now, what other factors do you think the united states have taken into account before sending this like those? >> well, you know, anderson, everyone wants to give ukraine what they are asking for. secretary austen has been talking to the minister of defense, and they have attempted to try and fill all of their needs. patriots, though, i've got to tell you, i keep hearing this, it is a special kind of system. what i mean by that, it is something the u.s. military calls, a high demand, low- density piece of equipment,
10:25 pm
which means, a lot of people want them in different theaters, but there is not a whole lot of them. there is barely enough of them to cover all of the requirements that the u.s. military has here they are extremely expensive. they have not just the missile, but the larger, radar, and command-and-control center, which are all a part of the package. it takes a year plus to train missile crew with even more time to spend training those who prepare them. this is not a rifle or even a high mars, where you teach someone how to point and shoot. this is a very complicated system. by the way, each one of the missiles that are fire costs between 3 and $5 million a piece, the missiles, not the launch. these are all things that add up . i think secretary austen has been replacing that demand for patriots with some of our older systems, we still work very well, like the hawk missiles, and others. i think we are trying our best to give ukraine what they need
10:26 pm
me but it is not always what they are demanding. remember, these are part of aid packages. they are not paying for the systems. that $37 billion package that matthew just talked about, that is a huge package. that is a significant amount of money for weapons. >> how do you see the war right now, as you see kind of the big picture of it? >> i think we are going to see, because of a variety of factors, ukraine having to cross over the river, russia trying to force mobilized forces to the front, some very good victories recently by ukraine in both the northeast and southeast. i think we will see a little bit of slowing down, but ukraine continues to defend well, fight, and gain more ground. but we are seeing, what has been reported by both cnn and the washington post, is this potential opportunity to train large numbers of ukrainian forces his some of the u.s. training areas, where i used to command turf in germany and
10:27 pm
other places in europe, which will create the capability for ukrainian forces to counter what we have seen so far as a very poor russian tactics and capabilities. if ukraine can train these large amounts of large forces and combined arms operations, i think we will continue to see ukraine getting more and more victories as the days go on. they need a little more time. >> i appreciate it. thank you. what police are saying about a six person on the loose where four persons were found stabbed to death, i had.

10:35 pm
will be able to put it all together and do some kind of assessment. your second question is regarding the police department. they have brought in the fbi and they have brought in idaho state police. our fbi, csi people are actually on the scene there, as well as the behavioral analysis unit, the profiling unit, they are working as a task force. my sense is if you were there at the scene and use all of these people, you would not know me necessarily, who was with moscow police department, the fbi, or the idaho state police. >> a crime scene like this there has got to be a lot of visible evidence. this number of people being killed, that is a difficult thing to do. it has got to be a violent struggle. >> well, yes, but depending on how quickly this offender was able to get into those rooms and stab the people, and this person, from what is being
10:36 pm
reported, and the result, they were practiced with that knife. what is important to look at, and i don't want to be too graphic here, the offender likely could have cut himself on his own knife and that happens because, blood is slippery. as he is stabbing somebody, his hand could have gone down over the blade, leaving his own blood behind. so, what the analysts are looking for is, what are the areas around where the victims died, where there seems to be a lot of really excessive and harsh stabbing, because that is the area where the offender may have cut himself, because there is a lot of blood. we have to have a way to focus in on, where is it likely that he cut himself? >> there is also whether this was targeted or not. >> yes. >> how do you figure that out?
10:37 pm
>> sometimes, it is not easy. when you go into a scene like this, you have multiple victims. you have to look at, who were the victims was treated specially? was there a big room that was stabbed multiple times? was there dismemberment? was the victim laid out in a certain way? compared in contrast to how the other victims were treated. you look at one victim or two who were treated differently by the offender, in terms of their injury patterns, or in terms of the postmortem behavior. that is how you do it. >> i appreciate you being on tonight, thank you. next, the cruise ship passenger rescued after spending hours stranded all alone in the ocean, just his own body treading water in the gulf of mexico. what he is saying now deepens the mystery of how he got there. our smart sleepers get 28 minutes more restful sleep per night. proven quality sleep. only from sleep number.

not scoring that many goals. they have only scored two. he has been involved in both. he put himself literally on the line to get that win in over iran. he is going to play. will be the biggest match of his international career, if he is fit enough, why would you miss it? >> can you tell me about the decoration you have on your neck? >> this is my team usa scarf from the 2014 world cup in brazil. it was the last world cup the u.s. actually played out. that is a big deal. it has been eight years but had to wait eight years. every american soccer fan has had to wait eight years with the u.s. to even get there. now, we are in the growth stage, and we are so worried about christian pulisic and his pelvic. it is fine. the pelvic condition that he suffered is okay. this is a serious issue. i would not laugh at it. when i am not laughing at all. i am laughing because it was called the pelvic condition felt around the world. can you hear a pelvic contusion? that makes more sense.
10:53 pm
>> well, look at it. it just looks painful. >> this is a pelvic miracle, really? >> yes. it is a pelvic miracle. there is no other way to say it. >> ecd video, i don't know what a healed movement looks like there. does it look like he is moving well? >> yeah. this could get really, really messy. i saw him train tonight. he looked good enough. he came out around the start of the training session, i was not around to watch it because the media was showing it out. he looked like he was going about 80% he was taking it easy. but, yeah. they put them into the training session. they were going to assess him during that session and given the all clear if he was good, and he has but i think you will be fine. >> because i am new to this,

who is the favorite here? what are the odds of america winning? >> welcome a look. the dutch team is clearly favorites. they are one of the best countries never to win the world cup. they played in the three finals. they are ranked number 8. they have a ton of superstars. the americans have a great chance. once you get to this stage of the tournament, it is knockout football. literally anything can happen. if you can hang in a game, not concede any goals. the americans have been strong very defensively in this tournament. you have got a shot. i think you later this game goes with it being tied, i think the greater the shot this team has. they are making the most of the fact that they have the world cup for eight years. they have been talking about the agony of missing out. in that time, they have got better as a team to their players have a better and better. many of these u.s. teams, now. they are stars all over europe. that was not the case, eight, 10, 12 years ago.
10:55 pm
this team is very much on an upward trend. >> he is definitely right. these guys are real international soccer players. it is not a bunch of guys who played high school soccer and are now in the world cup. these are international superstars. they are the youngest team at the world cup. the youngest starting team. maybe they do not know enough to be nervous because they are so young. they have a real shot. >> eating they have a shot. do you think the u.s. can pull up and upset? >> yes. i really do. i am not a betting man, but, i think they have a restaurant but i think the netherlands is the favorite but the united states is a very skilled team. they are super enthusiastic. they are playing very well. the defense, they have not led in a single goal in the field of play the only goal they allowed was a penalty kick. they have this rock solid defense. so, yeah, they have a chance. the netherlands, they were the best team ever to win a world
