ha harrak. hello and welcome to all of you watching us here in the united states, canada, and all around the world, i'm kim brunhuber. ahead on "cnn newsroom," we're live from doha, where everything is on the line for the men's soccer team at the world cup as they bear down for the showdown with the netherlands. plus, the senate runoffs down to the wire days ahead of the election. we have new poll missiles. and we'll take you live to kyiv where russia is firing dummy missiles to air defenses. ♪ it's do or die time now at the world cup in qatar, and soon, the u.s. will take on the netherlands to kick off the round of 16, but here's how the table looking now. many familiar faces have advanced through the group stage
1:02 am
like france, england and spain with a few notable absence, european heavyweights, germany, belgium and denmark didn't make it out of their groups as well as host qatar. now, in about six hours from now, the u.s. and nenldz will t netherlands will take the field. and later today, lionel messi and argentina will face australia. team usa says the man nicknamed captain america, christian pulisic has been cleared to play. he left the previous game with an injury. amanda joins us live from doha. amanda, the kickoff here counting down, two teams with great defenses, a cagey game today? >> yeah, as far as they say, it
1:03 am
is go time, that is the message from the final news conference, he put it at this stage of the tournament, if you can push on through, that is what you need to do. two-time player of the match so far at the world cup, captain america, as you said, christian pulisic has been the name on everybody's lips. he says he is ready to go what we don't know is how much of the game he will play. they are taking it one step at a time. >> literally, one game at a time. one minute at a time. you know in this knockout stage, you know, anything makes the difference in a result. and you have to be patient. you also have to realize that it can be a 120-minute exercise, and you have to plan your lineups and substitutions accordingly. >> yeah, this is without doubt that the young squad have faced in their cycle.

the usa's personal visit to a world cup since the marriage against brazil in 2015. they're up three-time world cup runner? s up and 18-match unbeaten run. the dutch coach louis van gaal is a man who nose a thing about football or two. he's kicked back from the style of players in the first three games pointing out that they very far suffered the same defeats that, kim, you were mentioning of the likes of belgium and germany. van gaal actually moved to the netherlands. he played in a game where he was the coach and then he educated himself about the game. that impressed louis van gaal. he fired a warning shot, he said
1:05 am
that u.s. are nothing that can't be overcome. >> all right, amanda, so, all eyes are on the biggest names in the game. and no one bigger than lionel messi. he's hoping to keep his world cup dreams alive in his match against australia later today. so, can the socceroos shock the world? >> they very much hope so, they're still partying in melbourne after those incredible celebrations that we saw in that picture over denmark on wednesday. australia back in the round of 16 at a world cup since the first time since 2006, and as you mentioned, with the game being the second ever knockout against lionel messi and argentina. and we're at that point now that defeat could mean the last time we see messi in an argentina shirt, given what he said in the runup to the tournaments about
1:06 am
his future for his country. deciding whether or not to retire at the age of 35. the argentine coach is the turnaround here. he described it as crazy saying i only got to bed at 4:00 a.m. on thursday. australia played the earlier fixture, they had a little bit more rest, but their fans are sticking a little more positive than they are from the opening defeat against saudi arabia. finally feeling their best, back to the team, that led to that 36-game unbeaten run. they are in doubt the favorite to go through this time. but australia's coach graham arnold, he has experienced a big loss for the socceroos, the only other setup that made it through, germany, 2006, ultimately, they were beaten by italy. interestingly, the only time
1:07 am
they were beaten by australia, 1998, and graham arnold, that current coach, as arnie is nicknamed, happened to be playing so he knows what it takes to beat argentina. >> we'll be watching. thanks so much, amanda davies in doha. appreciate it. for more, let's bring in david orenstein. he's a football analyst. i wanted to get your view of usa/netherlands. the dutch are favorites, they have the better talent, but usa arguably has played better in the tournament thus far, is that correct? >> i would say so, despite the fact that the dutch have won two of their three matches and they were unbeaten in the group stage, the u.s. looked like they're something a little bit different this time around. they've got more substance to their side. they've only conceded one goal and that was the penalty against wales. no goals from open place. so their defense is resilient,
1:08 am
the problem for the usa, they haven't been scoring goals and their main threat christian pulisic is recovering from injury. we do expect him to play, will that be a factor in their chances. there's no doubt the dutch coming into this is the favorite, but they've not got the best record of major nations in the world of football. they've never won the world cup. they've got a habit of maybe tripping up when it happens the most. there is a good feeling around the dutch camp with louis van gaal suffering from illness, the number of cases around the camp, they think that the usa could cause a surprise here. and it wouldn't surprise me if the u.s. come through this, should be a fantastic match.
1:09 am
>> people over here are hoping for the upset. i'm sure many viewers here who love the premier league. they'd love to get your take on england's match against senegal. we've seen plenty of upset so far. what are you hearing from the england camp as they prepare for the match? >> yeah, this is the tournament that says to you, do not take teams for granted. there is no room for complacency. if you underestimate size than perhaps argentina did early, perhaps as germany did when they faced japan, perhaps as belgium did when they faced morocco then you could get bitten. england is guarding against it that. this is a tournament that the football association in 2013 identified for england to win. and they come here expecting to do so. because their players have been talking for the first time, very openly, that they are here to pick up the trophy which you
1:10 am
don't normally see with england players. i've been around the camp quite a lot. i'll be there again later today. there's a really good atmosphere, their spirits are high. they've lost one player, so they're down to 25 men because ben white of arsenal has flown home. we don't know the exact reasons for that, other than it's a personal reason and his privacy should be respected. but england has hit some form, of course, they started with a fantastic victory over iran, but then held against the u.s. but that is a very strong u.s. team. then against wales with the likes of marcus rashford in the fold and a defensive structure that should stand england in good instead. they will not underestimate senegal. they've got some really strong players. people you speak to around the game say they are the most
1:11 am
tactically as substute team in of football. physically, in terms of their fitness, and together, they are a fantastic side but i think england are strong favorites for the match. and they will give anything to make sure they get through to a quarterfinal which is like lie to be against france. >> but you can't look ahead past senegal. african teams so far have won a record number of games. and the world cup was the first time that this world cup all african team had local coaches. and then this year, for the first time ever, three sides of the asian team have made the rounds of 16 for the world cup. do you get the sense it's part of this world cup, is it a one-off or a larger trend? >> i'd like to say it's here to stay because the quality and organization around the national federations has improved, and now we're seeing the results. now, the north african teams do
1:12 am
have quite a tradition at the world cup. but to remind people here, even though we talk about morocco making it through, don't forget that tunisia beat france in the final group game. that shocked a lot of people, even though france named a changed lineup. but it is said there is real quality. but when you look at ghana, to not have made it through to join the african teams in the last 16. cameroon showed great threat, they could have done it, you know, if they had just pushed that a little bit harder and that could have been a great story as well. so, one thing i've noticed is that of the seven populated continents of the world, all have representation in the knockout stage of this tournament for the first time ever. and that says not only africa but asia and oceana, europe, and
1:13 am
south america, there is more strength and depth at this world cup than ever before. and the next world cup is going to 40-18, it says to me there's a chance for even more upsets. i think that's your question, a strong africa is going to provide a real proposition going forward. of course, no african team has reached the final, or won the tournament. and i don't think they will on this occasion. but they're going to give the maybe more heralded sides a real run for their money. and senegal will give england a real test of their credentials. i don't think they will win, but the progress of the african teams indicate that they are here to stay at the top level of world football. and i think that's a good thing for the game. >> yeah. it's been what's -- pat of what's made this world cup, at

least on the pitch, such a fascinating watch. really appreciate all of your insights, david orenstein, thanks again. >> my pleasure. we're just a few days away from the runoff election for georgia's u.s. senate seat. friday was the last day of early voting, state data shows that nearly 1.5 million georgians voted early by the end of thursday. on tuesday, democratic incumbent senator raphael warnock and republican challenger herschel walker will face off once again. a new poll conducted by cnn ssrs finds that warnock is leading walker. and the runoff election will be held on tuesday. diane gallagher takes a look at final moments of early voting. >> i've never seen it like this. >> reporter: long lines once again wrapping around polling places. >> i started around the corner.

keep voting until someone does. the last time that happened was in 1923, and now we have some of mccarthy's critics saying they're going to oppose him in january and have enough to deny mccarthy the speakership. meanwhile, you have mccarthy saying he's prepared to take this all the way to the floor and willing to go through as many ballots as possible until he gets there. this is really shaping up to be a political game of chicken. meanwhile, the process of a floor fight is warning them that mccarthy's floor fight could undermine the majority. and make no mistake, we will not allow this conference to be dragged down a path to a paralyzed house that weakens our hard-fought majority. now, at this point, no serious challenger has emerged for kevin mccarthy but it's not for lack of trying. i'm told that the anti-mccarthy group has been meeting with

republicans. having informal talks, trying to engage whether they're interested in running in the race. so far, i've been told that no one is committed to to which will mccarthy, however it's unclear what happens on january 3rd if mccarthy decides to drop out or he can't get to 218 votes. cnn, capitol hill. ukraine says moscow's trying a new strategy to deplete its air defenses. still ahead, russia is reportedly firing dummy missiles and why they could be a problem for ukraine. plus the latest on iran. and the family home of iranian rock climber who recently competed. stay with us. perfect for lunch or dinner. only at t ihop. download the app and eararn free food with everery purchase.

welcome back to all of you watching us here in the united states, canada and around the world, i'm kim brunhuber. this is "cnn newsroom." the european union and other countries are once again targeting russian oil. that walk-along with the g7 will agree to set a $60 price cap on crude. eu members want a lower cap of the decision comes upon the european's embargo of traveling by sea which takes effect on monday. together, they represent one of the most comprehensive attempts get on the war revenues in ukraine. we will explain. >> reporter: this price cap has three objectives, first, it sustains, the effect of our sanction. second, it will further diminish
1:31 am
russia's revenues. and thirdly, at the same time, it will stabilize global energy markets, because it allows some russian sea born oil to be trade, brokered or transported by eu operators to third countries as long as it is sold below the cap. >> global energy experts admit they can't predict what the price cap would have on the oil market or how moscow might respond. in ukraine, there ars prepa to evacuate civilians from some occupied towns in zaporizhzhia region. one committee posted a notice for pro-russian officials asking officials to prepare for possible evacuation. russian troops have withdrawn from three settlements in the region. meanwhile, new video shows the aftermath of a rocket 00 strike in the kharkiv region.
1:32 am
rocket apparently took out an entire chunk of the building leaving it in ruins. some of the missiles that russia has been firing on ukraine are reportedly dummies. the yugian military says those missiles are nuclear capable but don't have explosive warheads. and ukraine says they're far from harmless, and russia is using them for a reason. for more, will ripley joins us from kyiv. will, what are we learning about russia's use of those dummy missiles? >> hi, kim, the assessment from the ukrainian side is that russia still has has a very viable stockpile of missiles that are viable. they don't need to use the dummies, the 1980s, energy-engineered nuclear missiles that they're firing without warheads and there's no word that there's any radioactive materials that are hit infrastructure targets here in kyiv and across ukraine. last week, russia fired more than 70 projectiles in total.
1:33 am
some of them with warheads and ukrainian officials say some without. why? because in a short period of time when you're firing 70 over a period of four or so hour, the goal is to exhaust the air defense system. out of those 70 fired the ukrainians shut down more than 50 of them, but the large volume that was fired makes it almost impossible to shoot any down. if the ukrainians are wasting their resources shooting down the gummdummies that increases likelihood that they'll strike infrastructure. and the hope is being that russia will suffer maximum damage. that is why russia is firing the old dummy missiles. it's not necessarily that they're running out, they're trying to overwhelm with the attacks. there is potential, they're
1:34 am
certainly bracing themselves for another attack in the coming days. basically, they assume that russia is giving ukraine enough time to build the missiles before they introduce another onslaught. that's something that we're watching closely here. >> they've been scrambling to restore power. still millions of ukrainians in the dark. what's the latest on that front? >> you know, it's certainly more grim outside of the capitol. here in kyiv, people are living without power for several hours every day. there are parts of ukraine, however, where people only have power for a few hour of the day and the rest of the time they're in the dark. and if they're living in one of these sold soviet era high-rise buildings where you need the elevator to go up and down that can be incredibly difficult when you're not only dealing with the cold and also in the dark but also having to climb flights of stairs to go up and down just to get the essentials to go on with your daily life. that's certainly a struggle. here in kyiv, it's well organized i have to say. if there is a power outage, a

lot of small businesses have been able to procure generators, so when the lights go out. you'll hear the buzz of these generators going on. businesses will continue to serve coffee, serve lunch. they might have a smaller menu. but yet, they're resilient and continue to forge ahead. but certainly, if there is yet another large attack, that could cut power capacity very significantly. right now, here in kyiv, they have about 70% of what they normally would have available in terms of electricity, but that nobody could shoot down very quickly depending how successful russia will be in the next expected wave of attacks. >> thanks sorch, will ripley in kyiv, appreciate it. ukraine says its diplomatic outposts have become targets of a fear campaign that's after 17 ukraine embassies or consulates have received letter bombs or suspicious packages. in some cases, the packages contained served animals.
1:36 am
ukraine's foreign minister spoke exclusively with cnn about who may behind it. >> well, it started with an explosion. and the embassy of ukraine, and but what followed, this explosion was even more weird and i would even say sick. because we started seeing letters of eyes cut off. in some cases, it's most probably the eye of a cow. and eye of a pig in another case. >> reporter: let me ask you, who do you suspect, who does ukraine suspect, of being behind this? >> well, of course, attempted to say, to name russia straight away. but first, you have to answer the question who benefits from this. it's definitely this is aimed at

sowing fear and terrorizing ukrainian glow tdiplomats. >> security has stepped up at offices around the world. and at first they responded to the fact that moscow could be behind the packages and issued a statement calling them psycho. a young woman unin custody the morality police, demonstrations have showed no signs of stopping. women marched in protests friday after prayers in a provincial capital in southeastern iran. the scene captured in this video from the ngo iran human rights. shots could be heard ringing out in the social media video from the same city. pictures showed one protester with minor injuries but no casualties were reported.

and amid the ongoing protests, female iranian rock climber recently competed internationally without covering her hair. a pro-reform news outletter is reporting the destruction of her family home inside the country. nada bashir has her story from london. >> reporter: well, this comes just six weeks after elnaz rekabi's return after competing at a competition. it appears to show the pro athlete's home being demolished. her brother seen crying in the video beside the rubble. cnn cannot confirm whether the demolition of rekabi's home took place by order of an official. at this place, they have not issued a comments. the concerns for rekabi's actions in seoul have persisted since returning in october. it's become a symbol of protests

against the regime's severe restrictions of women's rights. while she issued that she had competed without her hair covered by accident, there were concerns they might have been speaking under duress. authorities in iran had issued threats to the national soccer team and their family members while they were competing at the world cup in qatar. a source telling cnn that it came after the players refused to sing the national anthem at the world cup. among the latest, a man killed on tuesday during public celebrations during the national football team's defeat against the usa in qatar. iranian authorities have according to state-run media denied responsibility for his death. and say that several suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. but the norway-based human

1:44 am
analysts peer it could lead to interest rate hikes. the employment held steady at 3.7%. americans are also taking home bigger paychecks with hourly wages rising at the fastest pace in almost a year. president biden says americans should feel good about where the economy is headed. here he is. >> we're in a position now, where things are moving, they're moving in the right direction. as we go into the holiday season, here's what this all means. the americans are working. the economy's growing. wages are rising faster than inflation. and we've avoided a catastrophic rail strike. >> now, the president's upbeat assessment isn't shared by the financial markets. cnn's matt egan explains why wall street has turned sour on some good economic news. >> the hope is for a goldilocks jobs number, not who hot that would fuel inflation, and not
1:45 am
foo cold that would fuel inflation. we got hot. jobs growth has slowed. but the slowdown has been glacial. you almost need a magnifying glass to see it. now, some sectors did lose jobs of retail, transportation and health, they were all down in november but otherwise, there was a lot of demand for workers. leisure and hospitality continues to recover from covid adding almost 90,000 jobs one month alone. health care, government and construction, all of them added jobs. but part of the jobs report catching the attention of economists and investors is wages. coming in, the thinking was that waging would cool off which would be encouraging, because that would take some pressure off of inflation. that did not happen. wages heated up, growing by 5.1% year over year. from context, that is roughly twice as hot as the precovid pace. that's just a very strong demand for workers. at the same time, the supply of labor is shrinking, as the
1:46 am
worker shortage continues, the labor force participation rate dipped for the third month in a row. now, this will not please the federal reserve which is trying to get inflation under control by easing this imbalance between supply and demand in the jobs market. now, this is good news for the workers in the sense that their paychecks are getting hammered by inflation. so they want pay, of course, to go up. but despite the hot wage number today, wages are still not keeping up with inflation. i think when we take a step back, this is a good news/bad news situation. the good news there's nothing about the november jobs report that screams imminent recession. this jobs report is chugging along and that is a relief. no one wants to see the market go ice cold. but the bad part, it's going to embolden the federal reserve to keep raising interest rates to cool this economy off. not just at the upcoming meeting this month, but also raisie ing
