political analyst and senior editor at the atlantic. let's start with georgia's runoff election. nearly 2 million voters have cast ballots in early voting so what are exit polls revealing at this point? >> first of all, this is the 6th senate election that voters in georgia have had to cast ballots in the last two years counting the two in the general election, the two runoffs in the general election in 22 and the runoff. it is astounding how many people still showed up. what we saw in the first round and reflected in the exit polls was a close race. georgia was probably the swing state that snapped back the most in general toward republicans between 20-22. the other key states, all clearly toward the democrats but
11:09 pm
georgia republicans did quite well in most races up and down the ballot but voters have enormous doubt about whether herschel walker is up to the job of being senator. they question his command of the issues, his morality, his veracity and all of that has created a enormous opportunity for rafael to buck the tide in the state. the best thing walker had going for him was the chance he could be the 51st vote creating a republican majority senate, that is not there anymore. what the republicans will still come out now that they no longer have the opportunity to control the senate, that is the question. >> not want to wait on that one. in the meantime donald trump is calling for the termination of the constitution to overturn
11:10 pm
the 2020 election and reinstate him to our, a extension of the continued effort to deny the results. why are we not seeing more republicans push back against this? >> i am glad you used the word terminate, too many interviewers used the word suspend, that is not what he said, he said the constitution should be terminated to restore him to power through nondemocratic means. that is as close as you can get to the definition of a autocratic to and as you point out, once again as we have seen throughout trumps emergence as a national figure, virtual silence from republicans as there was about personally criticizing trump over his meeting with kanye west.
11:11 pm
virtual silence over his said chest and in between that meeting and these comments that the january 6 defendants are being railroaded and he will not only pardoned but apologized to them and what you are seeing is the continued refusal of republicans to stand up to trump, even when he is clearly threatening the pillars of american democracy and what is really important is that this is happening at a moment where trump is at a low ebb. elites are saying he has led them to a dead-end and if republicans are unwilling to stand up to him at this point, what does it say about what would happen if he became the nominee again, much less the president again and try to move down any of the paths he has laid out in the last couple of weeks? >> we have seen it play out before. finally, trouble brewing for republican even mccarthy who does not yet have the support
11:12 pm
he needs to become house speaker, how likely is it that he will get the full support? he thinks he will. >> i do not know where the right goes in the finish. possibly steve who is the number 2 and is a few clicks to the right of kevin mccarthy, might be a alternative that they can block mccarthy. they do not have the capacity to install a speaker that would be fully responsive to what they want because there is enough republicans from swing districts that would view it as a electoral suicide. the challenge republicans have is the bulk of the caucus are trump friendly districts where trump was victorious by 10 points or more. that is why, what we were talking about a moment ago, so if you criticize him but the majority is dependent on 18 house republicans that are in
11:13 pm
districts that voted for biden. the majority of the 18 are in new york and california alone. states that will be more difficult for republicans in a presidential year in 2024 than they were in 2022 and those members no, if the freedom caucus gets what it wants and further tattoos the republican party as the party of trump and taylor green, that will make their life even more difficult in 24. i think they are going to be a force that resists getting into what the right is demanding and that does lead back to mccarthy but not without the possibility of somebody like steve becoming a compromised alternative. >> always great to get your analysis. appreciate it. nearly 3 months into the protests that rocked iran, a pro-reform outlet says a iranian official announced a

11:23 pm
>> it is spectacular and because of that it draws in visitors and residents alike to be able to see and experience the activity. often times the opening days of a volcanic eruption like this are the most spectacular so we worry about multiple things. getting too close to the lava or interacting with volcanic gas or particulates in the air. generally clogging the roads and or making access for the first responders and scientists on the ground and civil defense officials and other people that need to be present to monitor the eruption, those are all the things we worry about emma however once a parameter is established, we encourage people to come and look at the eruption from a safe and respectful distance. >> you have been watching this closely, anything you would like to tell us? have you noticed any major changes in volcanic activity in the last few hours?
11:24 pm
>> this is a fascinating eruption. one of the things we are interested in tracking is how the eruption location, the fissures in the ground, where the volcanic vents are, how they change over time and how the pace of lava flowing out of the ground changes over time. how the amount of spattering that shoots material up into the atmosphere changes over time, these tell us about the changes in supply and pressurization. at the current time the eruption has not changed substantially in the last day and a half. it is focused to only erupting from one current fisher now. it has reached a relatively flat area of slope so what this has done has caused a advanced rate of lava flow to slow down. it is moving at 12 meters an hour and it is also causing the lava flow further upslope to have what we call breakouts

while some of the restrictions have been eased and that is a good thing it appears china's zero covid-19 policy is in place. what is the latest? >> for one thing, most school campuses around the country remain closed. that is one reason i am working from home today. as you mentioned there is a lot of changes being announced over the weekend by local authorities around the country. they have also said from now on people no longer have to register their names when purchasing fever medication or antibiotics. in some locations authorities are telling residents do not do 39 tests unless necessary. in sharp contrast of what they have been saying for months which is conducting these incessant mass testing citywide.

the problem is the contradiction. for a lot of indoor public venues you still need a test result. that includes office buildings and shopping malls. going to work in grocery shopping, two of the most basic things most people need to do in their daily lives. another thing is local authorities removed many testing kiosks forcing people to line up for hours to get tested at remaining locations in bad weather like heavy rain or snow storms. there is a lack of consistency and clarity across the country not to mention there is still quite a few holdouts in terms of some locations sticking to strict covid-19 rules. this is not surprising because of the centralized system so a lot of local officials are still waiting to hear from the very top according to the president who has not addressed the situation publicly in recent days. for international viewers, world sport is next, for everybody else, stay with us, i
