our viewers joining us in the united states and all around the world, i'm bianca nobilo. it's 4 a.m. on the u.s. east coast and 9 a.m. here in london. we have breaking news this hour. again with the breaking news. the new harry and meghan dock cuedocku series was released an hour ago. here's what we can tell you so far. early on harry issues a scathing rebuke of the media and meghan gives her reasons for working on the documentary. >> i'm not going to say that it's comfortable, but when you feel like people haven't gotten any sense of who you are for so long, it's really nice to just be able to let people have a bit more of a glimpse into what's happened and also who we are. >> with me now, my co-anchor
1:02 am
who's had his hands full today max foster and kate williams on set. max, let's start with you. you have an hour. what have you gleaned so far? >> three hours into one. we're getting through it. they've explained their reasons for doing this documentary, which is largely they want to tell their story. it's how they got together, very much describing how this was a love story and how they didn't want to ultimately conform into the royal system. from the very beginning they had this caveat. they asked members of the royal family to contribute and they declined to do so. that's why we don't have that side of the debate. it starts actually with cell phone footage, the two of them recording their thoughts as soon as they had left the royal family. not left the royal family but left their royal roles. from a very early stage they were filming elements of what
1:03 am
would become this documentary that came out today. a couple of sound bites that stood out from me. one from harry, one where he says i think so many people in the family, especially obviously the men, they have a temptation or urge to marry someone who would fit the mold as to perhaps someone who would be destined to be with them. difference between making decisions with your head and your heart suggesting men in the family had married people they weren't destined to be with and weren't truly in love with, which is quite a thing to say about other members of your own family. also talking about how what a struggle it was growing up with so much media around them. this idea that there's a conspiracy really between the media, the royal rotor, as he describes it, and the palace. this idea that certain u.k. media are given access to the palace system. the deal back is that they give
1:04 am
positive coverage in the media. we're not part of the royal rotor but i'm involved with them. i don't really see that there's a conspiracy there but that's what harry and meghan felt because they didn't benefit from that system. >> that did strike me. when they say the royal media is an extension of the pr from the palace. that's not the case for what you see. it does see the an tag doe glis, if you like, in the early part of the episode, squarely the british media which can come as no surprise. does it strike you that perhaps that will be the target of some of the criticism rather than the cambridges? >> yes, bianca. i've watched all episode one and
1:05 am
episode two and three and i'm going back and forth. very focused on the media. my duty to expose the exploitation of the media involvement. it's not just us, it's the biggest story that his mother suffered and in episode he goes into the harassment he suffered as a child from the beginning. his earliest memories was being chased by the paparazzi. that's a sad thing to remember. he talks also very sadly about how after his mother dies he's struggling to get over that and also being chased by the media. certainly it's very targeted on the media and very targeted on what they've suffered. we know harry and meghan have talked about press intrusion and they are suing various papers. episode one is a love story, episode is harry's early life and diana and episode three is the gear up to the wedding. he's texting her father, thomas
1:06 am
markle had a heart attack, didn't come to the wedding. she texts him and he texts back and she says, that is not the way he'd ever address me by text. she and harry say, that's when we realized his phone was compromised. there's an implication here, i think, if i'm right in interpreting it, that harry -- that thomas markle's phone was hacked by someone or some people who were trying to get certain texts out of meghan. that is a serious allegation. we've seen in the trailers from their lawyer, it was a war on harry and meghan. suggesting not that they were just press harassment, there were stories and we've seen that in the trailers. i don't think this is discussed in episodes 1, 2, 3. the i think this will be coming out this time next week. this is bombshell allegations and they are speaking about their lives.
1:07 am
>> let's talk more about the epi episodes. so far based on what you've seen, which statements or hints or allegations do you think would present the biggest issue for the palace, king charles iii and for the prince of waless? >> it's decided they weren't protected and the palace would always argue they did protect meghan and harry and did all they could to protect meghan and elevate meghan to where she was part of the royal family. within the other system it is a hierarchy. william and kate would always get a higher press at formal occasions. one of the things harry speaks about is some of the racist coverage in the british tabloid media, at this pointly one article that appeared in "the
1:08 am
daily mail" online. this is how he pushes that towards the finale. everything that she, meghan, was being put through they had been put through as well. it was almost like a rite of passage. some of the members of the family were like, my wife had to go through that so why should your girlfriend be treated any differently. he wanted extra help because she had this race element that other members of the rest of the family didn't have and he didn't get that back. that's one of the kernels of frustration and they weren't protected and ultimately left. >> kate, the intimacy of this betrayal and insight into the couple is quite striking and unlike anything we would have seen from members of the royal family before because in the
1:09 am
early episode you see meghan and she's in the bathroom, her hair in a turban. prince harry is referring to the fact he didn't have anyone he loved, relationships in his life balls of this press intrusion, their personal dye vul gagainst we're seeing. >> they start with a video diary. first thing is harry at the vip lounge in heathrow airport after leaving the royal family. meghan is in her bathrobe talking about her early experiences. they talk about their first date, their love story. they go in a very intimate manner, as you say. this is unprecedented in terms of the intimacy they're giving into the lives of royal family members and how meghan came into the royal family and how she came out of the royal family.
1:10 am
>> max, i haven't seen more than the first episode but i understand we're hearing from more friends of the couple and also family members, too? >> yes. so her mother -- meghan's mother speaks on there. also, the former palace staffers who now work for meghan and here ri, key historians, constitutional experts. they have authoritative people in there backing it up. the director says i hope when viewers press play, whatever preconceptions people have, they'll be open to discovery of what we shared in this documentary series. it's an incredible love story set against the context of huge stakes and a journey of an historical event that will be discovered for a long time to come.

social media. >> this is our duty. i feel as though being part of this family, it is my duty to uncover this exploitation that's been in our media. no one knows the full truth. we know the full truth. the institution knows the full truth. the media knows the full truth. >> with me now, cnn's royal historian kate williams and max foster. you both dived into the series. max, let's start with you. the new lines coming fast we are hearing that meghan has described their engagement, orchestrated reality show while learning more about their relationship with the press. what strikes you at this time? >> yeah. the this is ideally something they wanted protected. they're describing their love
1:31 am
story, how they got together. they have said they want to tell people more about themselves as well as what happened with the departure from the royal family. the idea that there is a conspiracy between the palace and the media and the palace is very concerned about upsetting the media. and there's a royal rotor system, a pooling system where certain outlets get favored access in order to tell the royal story effectively. they didn't benefit from that so harry describing how male members of the family, their wives had gone through similar ordeals with the british media. you just have to go through it. harry saying it's different this time because they've got a race element and not stepping in to recognize that or understand that. harry and meghan wanted more protection from the palace and more push back. they felt they weren't getting that.
1:32 am
harry explaining where that comes from which is growing up with a wonderful mother who gave them great experiences but much of his childhood punctuated by media intrusion and how that really scarred him. he sees certainly parallels between meghan and his mother, not just in terms of character but the way they were both treated and how he wasn't going to let that happen to his wife, the same thing that happened to his mother, which is why they left the royal roles they had committed to. >> kate, max speaking there about the mentions of the historical parallels and similarities that harry sees in his mother and his wife. the presence of diana is deeply felt in this docu series. >> yes, it is deeply felt. he talks about it in episode two. he's talked about the pain and suffering of women who mary into the royal family. he talks about how she was
1:33 am
followed. early memories of being followed and the panorama, she was deceived into t. she spoke her truth. she spoke her actual truth. he was concerned she suffered so much he doesn't want meghan to suffer the same. what this documentary is saying if we learn nothing from the suffering of princess diana, we learned nothing. meghan was pursued and perceived because there was racism as well. >> max, one line which wasn't said by either harry or meagan but one of the others speaking in the documentary, a former spokesman and he also had another role with the royal family. i think the arch well foundation, he's involved with that. he said that the idea of a family anointed by god, by blood to rule over this country and other countries around the world
1:34 am
is a difficult concept for people to get their heads around. it's not so far explicit but this docu series doesn't really paint the monarchy as a relevant or kind institution in the 21st century. >> yeah, they're trying to explain it to someone in the world. he worked at kensington palace, worked very closely to the cambridges and sussexs. he left to go work with the sussexs in communication and now runs their foundations. he sees their point of view. they have quite legitimate people speaking on this. it's almost too hallowed, in a way, the sussex's view to the monarchy. trying to bring reality to it. they explained how when harry
1:35 am
introduced meghan to the family, they were overcome by her being a hollywood ak dress and there was some cliches that they attached to that. they struggled to deal with her is what harry was suggesting when they first met meghan. i think it is a bit lost in translation between the hollywood vibe and the british vibe. they both struggled to bringing that to reality. never fully understood meghan or what she could contribute. >> this is interesting. when meghan is discussing the walk about, this event in brittain, you can tell the cultural differences. she doesn't understand the style of that or why it takes place anyway. can you explain to our international viewers how harry and meghan are regarded in this country at the moment, the complexities and what impact this docu series will have? >> they've said they want to
1:36 am
tell their truth. books have been written by people who don't even know. isn't it more sensible to hear our side of the story? certainly obviously they're suing a lot of newspapers here in the united kingdom. there's criticism of the press coverage and the royal rotor, criticizing the royal press here saying they were an extended pr of the royal family. they do get criticism in the media. i think there's a lot of support for meghan when she married into the royal family. a lot of sympathy for her. meghan was the first woman of color to mary into the royal family. multi-cultural brittain. majority people of color. one of the historians said the royal family catching up with bri brittain.
1:37 am
now meghan and harry have left the royal family. that needs examining. it is something people in brittain are thinking very seriously about. you are saying the monarchy. the queen had a lot of sympathy. charles's rein has been overseen by a racist rowe. charles's position is a bit shaky. how relevant is the monarchy and how relevant is it to the young and people of color? >> a key element of the modern monarchy and family dynamics discussed is the relationship between prince harry and prince william. is there much mention of the prince and princess of wales in the docu series? >> not yet. there are references to the family. when he introduced them to family members saw her as an
1:38 am
american actress and it wouldn't last. some criticism there. it's quite generic. we don't know what they're talking about. to kate's point, looking at more detail about what they're saying with the relationship with the media, there is a conspiracy between royal correspondents and the palace. how you react. whenever there's something difficult, the advice is not to react or feed into the stories. don't react to every news story you don't like. clearly harry and meghan did want more reaction. there is a debate there. what is the best way to deal with constant daily barrage of media attacks? do you respond to every attack or do you not? there are two very divergent communication strategies. that's one huge part of the tension here. you know, everything that meghan had been put through, this idea that other women in the family had been put through as well.
1:39 am
just deal with it and get on. they're essentially questioning and identifying the stiff upper lip which is what defines the monarchy. you don't let everything around you affect you and get consumed into it. that is what the monarchy is. you rise above things and you represent continuity and you don't go with the ups and downs. they're basically questioning the fundamental presence of the monarchy. there is a fundamental debate which is worth having but it's very different from what people in the palace would have. i don't think they would agree with a lot of what's in here. >> i'm sure as you were saying because of the divergence of communication strategies, they will not be responding in kind. max foster and kate williams, thank you both very much. we'll check in with you at the top of the hour. >> cnn learns of a controversial request of ukraine as the battle ragesing on. we'll have details ahead. plus, chinese president xi

1:46 am
munitions have on this? >> reporter: very good point, bianca. ukraine has tried to claim the moral high ground with how they go about this war and defending this country and limiting civilian casualties. it's very difficult to do that when we talk about cluster bombs. there's far too many to list all of them. a good example came back in april when a russian bomb that the u.n. found pass a cluster bomb that hit the eastern part of the country. it killed 60 people and injured more than 100. the aftermath of that was absolutely horrific. ukrainians saying having more of these weapons would change the war and help it end sooner. i can show you why they think that. if we're talking about normal bombs, the immediate, most deadly area that's destroyed is
1:47 am
a width of 50 meters. when you talk about cluster munitions,s there are two explosions, one detonates in the sky sending a bunch of smaller bombs out about 100 meters wide and that is when the bombs go off. you can understand why it is so hard to limit civilian casualties. they want to use this against concentrations of russian troops, military targets only. war as we know is complicated. russian troops are not exactly siloed off from the rest of the population so it's difficult to do that in practical terms. the other concern is some of those little cluster bombs, some of those bomblets don't detonate so they're left behind as land mines for civilians to come across later.
1:48 am
that's why the u.s. has made it difficult to transfer them to other countries. that's part of the reason why the biden administration so far has said no. they haven't really considered it yet. a former defense secretary, bianca, says they should. listen. >> russians are not playing by the marcus of queens berry rules. they're sending cluster bombs into schools, hospitals. they have no regard for human life. >> reporter: so, bianca, one other thing to mention and that is the u.s. has obviously a stockpile of these weapons. one model of the weapon they phased out back in 2016 because there were so many of those bomblets that weren't exploding. that's what the ukrainians want, because they say it will be more effective. if they don't have it, it will collect dust in the u.s.
