max, now two hours you've had to digest and analyze. what are the biggest take aways as far as you're concerned? >> there are similar themes, really, that the sussexs have spoken about in the past. this idea that they were under attack by the british media and the palace system wasn't there to protect them. there was conspiracy between them and the palace and the media. when they wanted to answer back to many of the -- much of the misinformation as they call it in the british media, the palace would say, let's leave it. let's not pursue this. male members of the family would also say that the other -- their partners, their wives have been through similar things so, therefore, you just need to grin and bear it effectively. these were ideas that meghan and harry refused to accept and
2:03 am
harry would point out to those members of the family that there's something different here and it's the matter of his wife's race. that was coming up in media coverage and they felt the palace should be doing more to protect them and they weren't protecting them enough. this is part of the documentary, a part that stood out to me. >> i'm so sorry. we now have kate williams as well. kate, something which surprised me so far about the documentary, i'm sure will surprise viewers around the world, is meghan discusses there's no one who teaches you exactly what to expect, how to behave. she references the princess diary where someone tells you to cross your legs like this, expect this little walk about. she googled the british national anthem. is that the case? why isn't there a support system to help people adjust to being royals? >> yes. there was no education. there was no one helping her and
2:04 am
particularly as an american who didn't fully understand the british royal system, she said it was particularly difficult. this is a poignant point. if you didn't understand what the royal walk about was, we know this was the case before. it was expected diana would know what to do because she came from an aristocrat partic background. it's different to being in the family. kate obviously had a very long relationship with william so there was lots of see. certainly one thing we do know about meghan, some people who were sent to tell her what to do, including lady susan hussey and there's been a racism row some if there was anyone sent to help meghan, they were clearly not someone who could help her. this suggests a very outdated
2:05 am
institution. if women and people who marry in, it's a complicated role. if no one is saying how to do it -- every other job we get a hand over that perhaps that is needed. there was urgent need -- harry's talked about modernization. this will be a key area for modernization. next person who maris in gets this guidance. >> max, this is an interesting point. whether it was inadvertent or institutional, it's acting like an expose and showing how arcane it is for anyone who's not in it. especially as there are increasing tensions that sits uncomfortably in an egalitarian modern society. >> one of the attractions is the mystique. you don't know what happens behind palace walls.
2:06 am
they are exposing all of that, saying it's quite mundane, it's not perfect, being a princess isn't all it is cracked up to be. and also the idea that they didn't fully embrace meghan who was biracial. that was one of the issues here. when they say they didn't take her race into account enough, that is a criticism of the system, it's not diverse enough. criticisms have been made before and kate was referencing some of that. her harry making the point they struggled with this american actress coming in and members of the family believed it wouldn't last, this relationship. he talks about how he connected with meghan in a way through his mother that very similar people experience similar treatment in the british media. that was something that he wouldn't accept. he didn't want to see that happening with his wife as
2:07 am
happened to his mother. >> to see another woman in my life whom i loved go through this media frenzy. it is the hunter versus the prey. >> the conspiracy theory he was talking about between royal correspondents, the press pack is essentially just a pr arm of the royal family. he doesn't believe it should be broken. that's what pulled him out. that press pack is one thing. there's a large part of the rest of the media which is completely, you know, running wild as it were and do come out with lots of speculative stories which they're frustrated with as well. which part of the media are they talking about? there's something in the palace which is this conspiracy, doesn't really exist, it's just a pooling system where we have one camera instead of 30 and they share the footage.
2:08 am
>> kate, i'd like to ask you about this idea that harry outlines where he says the royal press pack functions as an extension of the royal family, the palace. you are in constant communication and work with them all the time. is that your assessment of the reality? >> what harry said, yes, they were an extension of the pr arm of the palace. he didn't go into much more detail there. we do know from some of the trailers that he's later going to say it was not just media attacks on him, there were leaks. there were also plans coming from it seems within the royal household. he's going to talk about i think relationships between members of the royal family and journalists outside. he very much feels as if there was an agenda out to get him and it's interesting he's saying the pr arm of the royal family, he's
2:09 am
suggesting the pr arm didn't want good pr for harry and meghan. that's the inference he's making. some are good, some are not so good. my personal feeling is we saw this huge amount of criticism of meghan and harry for so many reasons. i think some of that could have been stopped by the palace. as we remember, harry and meghan had 2.4 million of taxpayers' money spent on it. they all get a property. never was criticized before. 2.4 million was all over the place, headlines. i think the palace could have put out saying this is the usual practice, we're happy but they didn't. the coverage did run wild. it tipped. certainly i think we will have over the next several days -- i
2:10 am
don't think we're going to hear from the royal family but sources will make clear, lots of journalists will say points so i think this is just the beginning. i think this is the opening. i think there's going to be lots more comments coming from the media and those who are going to disagree with it. next week we're having three more episodes. it seems as though those three episodes will be how harry makes it clear. >> you do get that sense that it's ramping up. it's interesting when there is an opportunity to nip the story in the bud. was it a function not to oxygenate the media or was it more calculated? >> we heard from doria ragland about her impeccable composure. what do we hear from her?
2:11 am
>> that was interesting, wasn't it? that vision of her at the royal wedding on her own effectively but supported by charles actually at one point. that was quite extraordinary. imagine what she has been going through, particularly living on the other side of america and dealing with all of the pressure that comes with that. and we heard from doria for the very first time this morning. >> i felt unsafe a lot. can't just go walk my dogs. i can't just go to work. there was always someone there waiting for me, following me to work. i was being stalked by the paparazzi. >> so there are lots of fresh voices in here and in context really, i would say, bianca, to a lot of themes that the sussexs talked about before. i think they do see this as effectively an historic document. what happened, you know, behind the scenes that makes it from their point of view.
2:12 am
they also point out very early on, netflix do, the members of the royal family were invited to comment as part of this documentary but they declined be to. >> max foster and kate williams, thank you very much. we'll have more. it's been a rough month for former president trump. multiple reports, backlash over a dinner at mar-a-lago and now another defeat for one of his hand picked senate candidates. herschel walker was the former president's last home for a lackluster come back. now there are questions about trump's inner circle about whether his candidacy is a good idea. cnn's kristin holmes has more. >> reporter: allies and former advisers are deeply concerned about what herschel walker's loss means for the former president. they had hoped that walker would win, walker being trump's hand picked cap date in the georgia election and that it would
2:13 am
breathe new life into what had been a lackluster launch of his 2024 campaign. they hoped a win would end the calls for new gop leadership after so many of trump's candidates in the mid-terms failed. now what they are seeing is quite the opposite. they are concerned that this loss is going to lead to more people, more demand for people to challenge former president donald trump when it comes to 2024. remember, this loss of walker's is coming off very bad for the former president. we are told he has been stewing at his mar-a-lago resort. he is calling allies. he is calling advisers. he is upset about his campaign success so far. he is upset about the verdicts in new york and he remains upset about herschel walker. now there is a reason for this. we are hearing from a number of people who are former trump supporters who are saying that it is time to move on. i want to read you one quote here, this is from someone who is close to trump.
2:14 am
this is what they said. they said, donald's got his problems right now and they are so numerous that i don't think he can win and i want to back a win sner. there are a lot of friends of mine who don't want trump at the top of the ticket because they feel like it's a pillar. that is a pretty strong statement from somebody who has backed donald trump and even spoken to him recently. this is something who's close to the former president. we talked to advisers and republicans who don't support trump and they say they are weary of him. they say they've been down this road before. they believe there is still a portion of the base who doesn't really care about any of this and only cares about supporting donald trump. so that is something, of course, that is yet to be seen. ment this is a pivotal moment and where the former president is the most politically vulnerable as they've been in
