of destruction. at this hour, 50,000 people are without power and a lot of folks are very shaken up. >> we got inside and minutes later all held broke loose. >> my brother he runs in front of me, as we're running we hear a boom and then everything, like we hear the roof lifting and he's lifted off his feet and he grabbed onto the door frame. as he's grabbing i'm falling off that side of the trailer. >> let's get to the ground, nick valencia is in greatler, louisiana. how bad is it on the ground there, nick? good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, don. look at this damage left behind by a tornado that hit this community. it's part of the state hit by a large outbreak of tornados, which is rare and residents said they were aware there was going to be weather in the area, they

never expected to take a direct hit. >> that's a tornado headed our way. >> extreme weather wreaking havoc in louisiana after more than a dozen tornados were reported across the region wednesday. residents in st. charles parish witnessed a tornado tear through their neighborhood in a matter of seconds. >> it shook us and knocked us down and then i walked over and seen the damage. it was like eight seconds. >> reporter: one woman described the moment a tornado hit her home. >> i hear booming against the wall. as i'm running out, my brother runs in front of me. as we're running, boom, everything we hear the roof lifting and he's lifted off his feet. he grabbed onto the door frame. >> reporter: jefferson parish was hard hit and left in the dark. >> in this path we saw there are a lot of power lines down. that's not going to happen quickly, the restoration there.

>> people are already in the dark trying to clean their houses, pull stuff to the driveway. it's sad that we're dealing with this in december when we thought we got through the hurricane season okay. >> reporter: a tornado touched down in the city of gretna, i toured the homes destroyed in the immediate aftermath. >> the noise it made it was unreal. >> i was looking out the window at first and i just got out the window. i was panicking, you know, and i just started saying my prayers. >> reporter: i spoke to some of the neighborhood's youngest about the experience. >> i thought it was an explosion, and then my mama told me to get down. >> reporter: another two tornados touched down in new ie beer ya causing damage to a medical center and damaging many homes. >> we had mobile homes flipped, houses destroyed, families torn apart. it's going to take a while

before things are back to normal. >> reporter: lizzie taylor said she will now have to move. >> that tornado i thought we were safe from destroyed our house. destroyed everything. >> reporter: just to give you a sense of the extent of the damage, this used to be a church, the water is pouring down, roof partially torn off and the side of the building left in tatters. a lot of this community looks like this, block after block, homes in the area still without power. emergency crews are going to be canvassing the area making sure everyone is accounted for. but later today we expect an update from the governor to give us more information on the extent of the damage, don. >> nick valencia in louisiana, thank you, nick. the democratic party is still waiting a formal announcement from president biden on whether or not he is running for re-election. it appears one of the most

influential people in his life is all in. cnn has learned that first lady jill biden is supportive of him coming for another run. this comes after voters say they would like to see another name on the ticket but would vote for him if he won the primary. kate, what are you learning about how the first lady has gone to maybe supporting the run. >> reporter: she's taken into account the last month or so of joe biden's presidency. we saw the midterm elections turn out better for the president, the economy is slightly better. even things like brittney griner, she's the assessor of the situation. what you said is true about the first lady. she's the most influential person in the president's life after 45 years of marriage but also the person who can best assess him, what he wants, how he's doing, his schedule, what his legacy will be.

and at this point she's gone to a firm all in camp than previously, even in the summer where she remained on the fence and had a lot of thinking to do about it. it's a busy social season for the first lady, the hosting stuff that's not her top of mind thing. it's been busy but she's gotten to the place with the president where she's thinking 2024 is happening. >> which is notable it hasn't always been that sentiment. you heard from the president and his aides who said it's his intention to run. but she hasn't always supported his desire to run for higher office in the past. i guess the question is, until he makes the decision early next year, is there a chance she could change her mind or is this solid this is where she's headed. >> it sounds as if this is solid, this is where she's headed. the family needs to weigh in, we've heard from the family that joe biden's future depends on what his children, grandchildren

feel. she knows that hunter biden will be a target again. if she doesn't want joe biden to run again she makes it known. the story in her about 2004, that joe biden and his aides, including ron klain at the time were meeting and jill didn't want him to run. she was wearing a bikini and wrote the word no on her stomach and walked through the house. everyone i spoke to for this piece said she's moving forward and they intend to get on board and make the re-election run. >> see if that includes a similar message this time. kate bennett, thank you. potential disaster averted when russian flight controllers called off a space walk after they noticed a fluid leak from the cruise ship that docked at the international space station. this is the motion a thick scream of liquid spewed from

charges he's facing numerous charges including attempted murder, attempted kidnapping. how do you expect the team to defend him? >> reporter: he has on the state charges filed not guilty pleas so far but in the moments after the attack, he did apparently confess to this. telling one of the officers i didn't really want to hurt him, meaning paul pelosi, but you know this was a suicide mission. and of course part of the reason for this hearing yesterday was to give a judge the opportunity to decide whether there's enough evidence for this to go ahead to trial. and, of course, depape allegedly hit paul pelosi with a hammer while two officers were standing there, so the evidence is apparently strong. guys? >> thank you, nick watt. house speaker nancy pelosi was the first woman to hold the gavel now the first to have herself mortalized in the

last time. this is about their departure and why they felt forced out effectively. it's three hours of it, but if i summarize it started with the wedding, and that was positive high point but it quickly turned to jealousy, talking about a tour to australia that went well to the couple. there was jealousy back home, jealousy when megaghan started appearing on the front pages, and the palace weren't supporting them. took a massive toll on meghan's mental health, she said all this media trigger her to miscarriage, led to suicidal thoughts and they had to relocate to get away from the tabloids they went to the family with the proposal to continue in their roles but from outside the uk. but those conversations were

leaked and it blew up in the end. >> so harry went into detail about his meeting with william, charles and the queen about leaving his royal role. what happened there, max? >> reporter: this was a meeting at the queen's estate after meghan and harry issued this public plan for what they intended to do, which is move to canada, continuing their roles but being privately funded effectively. they went to charles, william and the queen with this plan and this is what happened. >> it was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me and my father say things that simply weren't true. and my grandmother quietly sit there and take it all in. >> reporter: their argument effectively it was you're in or out. harry wanted half in, half out. of course this is all entirely

despite musk himself saying last month he would leave the account up as part of his commitment to free speech. jack sweeney runs the elon jet account and we'll talk to him in a minute. jack is a college student who used publically available information to build a bot that posted every time musk's jet took off and landed. only this week twitter just happened to reveal new restrictions around sharing details around someone's location. musk is defending the policy saying it's a physical safety violation. it comes after musk re-established previous rule breakers, including neo-nazis. remember musk had been on the free speech train since purchasing the site framing his fight for free speech as a battle for the future of

civilization, his words. but musk has a history of not welcoming certain speech across his business. former spacex employees told "the new york times" he fired work workers after they publically criticized behaviors on social media. and a book by tim higgins he details reports that musk created an environment at tesla where workers who disagreed with him were ousted. tesla has laid off employees it's asked them to sign agreements with nondisparagement clauses. musk banned a fan blog after they claimed tesla was charging for hardware they paid for. he's blocked journalist like our colleague, alex marquardt, and on an earnings call in 2018 after tesla reported a record loss, musk didn't want to hear any questions from analysts.

multiple injured we'll show you what happened on the ground as the sun is coming up there. plus a new report that says maternal and infant death rates are higher in states that ban or restrict abortion. what the numbers show. no longer man of steel, what actor henry cavill revealed to his fans and what's behind his decision. there seems to be something missing from the american wf workforce. men are missing. new data shows more men are out, more women are in. many of them working in fields traditionally dominated by guys. what's behind all of this? vanessa, what's up? why are the ladies taking over and the men backing out, is this a good thing? >> it's a good thing and there's some bad to it. but overall during the pandemic we lost so many jobs but what happened is both men and women have gained all of the jobs back that they lost during the

time. >> we're happy. >> reporter: more men ages 30 to 44 have been dropping out of the workforce. the labor force participation rate for men in that age group is lower than it was pre-pandemic. >> i don't think it's a secret that many of us rethought our whole work life balance, what were we doing, who's raising the kids? how do we want our family to work? >> reporter: and more women in recent months ages 30 to 44 are participating in the labor force and at a higher rate than pre-pandemic according to labor department data. and they're moving into more male dominated industries. >> the fears of a shecession was unfounded, women are returning and it's common to see women with project management roles or management positions within

construction. >> reporter: women like ava. >> i knew i wanted to work in construction management. >> reporter: she joined two years ago as a project engineer. today women make up 14% of the construction industry but it's the highest on record. >> i think it was definitely intimidating. my knowledge of the construction industry was that it was pretty heavy and male dominated. but the more that i started working in the industry and the more people i came into contact with, i think i realized quickly pretty on there's a place for everyone in construction. >> reporter: do you see the construction industry as where you want to build your career? >> definitely. >> reporter: early next year, they'll welcome baby number two, another boy. that doesn't mean david is closing the door on rejoining the workforce one day. >> i won't say i'm out of the workforce 100%, retired, what have you. but for the time being we want

to give our second infant son the same thing we gave to our first, and that is a parent who's able to give them 100%. >> reporter: now david's reason for leaving the labor force is because he wanted to stay home with his son and take care of him. but that's a small percentage of men and why they're leaving the labor force. economists say a lot of it have to do with some men out on disability, mental health reasons, incarceration but as we've seen in the piece women stepping into more male- male-dominated industries, women are leaving female-dominated industries like teaching and nursing so we need men to step into those roles. the pandemic changed the way we work but it also changed what people are willing to do for work. it's an interesting time coming out of the pandemic in the labor market right now. >> i think it's good. listen, barring the mental health issues and all that. but i think it's good because it's a reset. the roles that traditionally you

thought were male/female shouldn't have been that way, but it is what it is. there should be more male teachers, there's a shortage of male teachers i think it helps with the pay gap, equity, women switching it'll help with that. but also poppy as you know, i told you covid had a lot to do with it. but you get to a certain point in life where you say it's not about the job, you want to be with your family. and at this point where i'm about to get married, if we had kids i would step back. >> he was saying this in your piece. i said wait until you have kids because it's more fulfilling, in certain ways, but harder to be at home. i have the most respect for what i think is the most underappreciated job in america, which is to be a stay-at-home parent. like your sister has raised twins, it's very, very hard, but

effect of the abortion ban specifically. that's going to take years to figure out. but they said let's look at the states that have restrictions and bans, look from 2020 and before, to see what health care for women, maternal health care looks like where were the weaknesses and how might the bans exacerbate that. so they took data from the cdc and march of dimes and compared those states. they found, in fact, there were more maternity care deserts in the places with restrictions and bans, you don't have access to th providers, less obgyns, more women giving birth younger under the age of 30, more in rural areas, and more without prenatal care or late prenatal care. so this impacts what's going to happen to the mom, the baby after, but the landscape

predidn't look good. >> if the landscape before didn't look good, after it's not going to be much better. i'm from alabama proud to be from alabama but there's a ban right now. so i think the question is, if they restrict the care, access, shouldn't the care at least be improved? >> yes, i think that's the question. what we're looking at is maternal outcomes and infant outcomes and those percentages are not great again. that's what they looked at in the study they found in the states with restrictions and bans in 2020 there was a 62% higher maternal mortality rate at that time between 2018 and 2020, if you looked at women of reproductive age, 15 to 44, for all cause it was 15% higher. and the rate of increase was two times as much over those years. let's talk about what happened

to the babies. again, infant mortality from 2018 to 2020, higher for that whole first year across all races and ethnicities. and in 2019, in fact, 15% higher mortality for babies in that first week in those states that restricted. so this is not a pretty picture at least where we started from. >> that makes what's happening now with abortion all the more important to follow it in the studies that come after 2020. thank you, doctor, appreciate that. still ahead, the loss of stephen twitch boss. it has opened up the conversation about mental health in america and pain that hides in plain sight. we're going to talk about that.
