3:02 am
>> i'm don lemon, poppy harlow, kaitlan collins is in washington as you see. what happens today when congress reconvenes and how long will the power struggle last? >> that's the question. there's still chaos on the hill. we'll speak with members of the mccarthy's party who voted for him and against him and for him and then against him. the showdown is spilling out to a second day here. resuscitated twice, that's what we learned overnight, how far the medical staff had to go to save damar hamelin's life. >> we begin on capitol hill with republican rebellion preventing kevin mccarthy from achieving his dream. mccarthy failing to get enough votes on three separate ballots that stretched for hours yesterday. the voting is going to resume in the house in a few hours from now. it's the first time that members
3:03 am
of congress failed to choose a speaker on the first ballot. mccarthy tells cnn he has no intention of dropping out of the race and he has the backing of f former president trump. >> from that perspective he thinks it's better for all republicans to get together. it doesn't look good for republicans and we want to solve it when we're stronger in the long run what we went through today in the end is a positive we're focused. >> does he say he wants you to stay in the race? >> yeah. >> we should note trump has not said that publicly. lauren fox is here, is it clear as of 6:00 a.m. this morning what kevin mccarthy's strategy is going to be today? . >> we are again finding ourselves in this historic moment with republicans having this really stalemate over what is going to happen next in their leadership. in their future governing of
3:04 am
this body. they were elected in november and so far which is what voters have seen. >> kevin mccarthy -- >> reporter: the newly elected republican majority on capitol hill at a stalemate with no speaker elected. >> this is a healthy debate. might not happen on the day we want it but it's going to happen. >> republican leader kevin mccarthy still fighting for the leadership role even after losing three rounds of votes tuesday. congress adjourned after the third vote when 20 gop members voted against mccarthy, all voted instead for representative jim jordan. jordan for his part does not want the job, voting three times for mccarthy. the so-called never-kevin republicans working the phones well into the night, trying to grow their opposition to mccarthy. >> we need the leadership and tools to stop the swamp from running over and stepping all over the people.
3:05 am
>> reporter: the california republican remaining confident, telling reporters tuesday night he only needs 11 more votes, suggesting that some members of congress may vote present to lower the threshold he needs to cross the finish line. >> we have to find a way we all work together. so i don't know who else could actually put that together i don't think there's enough. >> although the gop fighting continues on with matt gaetz questioning why mccarthy is allowed to occupy the speaker's office. >> if you want to drain the swamp, you cannot put the biggest alligator in charge of the exercise. >> mccarthy supporters feel it was a mistake to adjourn tuesday. >> the support is still strong for kevin mccarthy and no one is saying we want to find a consensus candidate. >> reporter: it was conversations like this one between representatives
3:06 am
alexandria ocasio-cortez and paul gosar where some in the gop feared democrats were planning to leave the floor or vote present so kevin mccarthy could have a lower threshold. >> i do believe in some of those conversations there are things happening on the floor, these machinations are happening on the floor. >> reporter: this is what democrats have been arguing all along that this is really showing disunity among republicans. that this is showing that they aren't ready to govern. the more likely scenario is that moderate republicans at some point get to the place they say mccarthy is not going to have votes we may need to have conversations with democrats to see if there's a moderate can't, i don't think democrats are going to leave the floor to give mccarthy the upper hand. >> he's in the speaker's office right now we'll see how long he keeps his stuff there.
3:07 am
lauren fox, thank you. who is going to be nancy pelosi's successor, there's a number of ways to play out, so here to walk us through the possible scenarios is harry inton. mccarthy failed to get the votes yesterday, three ballots we saw, what are you expecting to happen today back at noon. >> that's the question, what can happen. we're in uncharted territories here. let's walk through the possibilities. option number one, history says that kevin mccarthy can still win this thing, go back a century the last time we had multiple ballots, the gop leader then won on the ninth ballot, he was able to do so by cutting a deal with the ideological wing, the progressives, much like kevin mccarthy may need to do cut a deal with a conservative wing. if it's not kevin mccarthy, who may it be? one option is majority leader
3:08 am
steve scalise, why is he an alternative? >> he faced no opposition in the november leadership election so seems more popular more broadly. two a more conservative vote record than mccarthy but because he's more conservative he could lose moderates and keep in mind he isn't as conservative as most of the anti-mccarthy reps. so maybe he won't work out. then you have to move to option number three, perhaps it will be the former white house gop deputy whip, patrick mchenry. he's between mccarthy and scalise. think back to 1999 when huh the similar sides in congress and it was the third option who became speaker. those are three potential options. >> those are three options but it feels like we're operating in a wild wild west here where no one knows what's going to happen. right now committees are going to have interim chairmen, no legislation going to get passed.
3:09 am
it's at gridlock on the hill. >> could be the anti-mccarthy reps, jim jordan gets e lelelec by the moderates or you end up with the coalition with some democrats backing the more moderate republican or hakeem jeffries some reps are like we'll go with him, who knows what's going to happen. it's the wild wild west. >> thank you, speaks to the moment we're seeing here on capitol hill. >> and back to the details and chaos in a moment. new details onda damar hamelin's fight for his life. his cuuncle describing to cnn h nephew's condition. >> his heart had went out so they had to resuscitate him twice, resuscitate him on the
3:10 am
field before he kacame to the hospital and a second time when he got to the hospital. i want to show my gratitude for the staff on hand because if not for them my nephew probably wouldn't be here. >> let's get to adrienne broaddus with more. what else did we learn from damar's uncle about how he's doing? >> reporter: his uncle dorian glen told me his nephew is fighting. this morning still in the intensive care unit listed in critical condition. his uncle tells me he is on a ventilator and sedated. the family also saying they won't be able to rest until damar is out of the icu. here's more on my conversation with his uncle dorian. >> he sustained some damage to his lungs and they're working to try to remedy that. and they got him on a ventilator
3:11 am
to help with the breathing too just to take some of the strain off his lungs so they can heel and recuperate. just a sad situation all the way around. >> dorian also telling me that damar is lying on his stomach. doctors told the family they put him in this position to take the pressure off of his lungs. that's what you heard him describing there in the conversation and it's also helping, according to damar's uncle dorian, helping to remove the fluid from his lungs. >> thank you very much. we appreciate that. i want to bring in dr. sanjay gupta. doctor, good morning to you. we're learning all these new details. your reaction to what you heard from the uncle in that interview, what he had to say, that he had to be resuscitated twice, once on field, again at the hospital. >> yeah. these are some concerning details. i will say at some point we will
3:12 am
hopefully hear from the medical team to get a better idea of what exactly has transpired. sometimes things can get lost in translation with these things. but what we had heard is that damar had had a defib lated placed while on the field. his heart had been in the fibrillation like state, instead of pumping normally it was quivering, fib bri lating. that's why you defibry late. to create a more normal rhythm again. that seemed to have worked we saw he was waiting in the ambulance, taken to the hospital, but then now, according to adrienne's reporting, he needed to be resuscitated again. so that's obviously of concern. also he's on the breathing machine but it sounds like in order to better ventilate him they needed to flip him over onto his chest. that's a sign he probably had
3:13 am
fluid built up in his lungs. essentially what happens, the heart not beating well, fluid backs up into the legs, feet, but also into the lungs and that becomes hard for gas, carbon dioxide, oxygen to exchange. you heard us talking about similar things at the pandemic when they were trying to figure out how best to ventilate patients. he's a young man, otherwise presumably healthy. we don't know what's at the root cause of this, what happened, that will help with outcomes as well. but he has a long road ahead of him. at some point we'll hear from the medical teams but that may not be for awhile because they need to take care of, treat, and figure out the impacts on his other organs as well. >> i assume the few days are critical as to an indication of
3:14 am
how he might recover and how full his recovery might be because that's possible to have a full recovery. >> yeah. >> when do you think we would have an indication of that? >> first of all, it is possible, and i think the biggest advantage that he has begin is that he's a young healthy man prior to this, so that's going to work in his favor. what i would say is that you got to measure these things in days and weeks as opposed to hours and days. it could take some time. typically the medical establishment could be conservative before they give a progress notice or updates because they want to have the data and they want to be able to see how the impact has been on his other organs. right now he's in probably what people would describe as a medically induce coma. when the heart is not working well, you want to increase the heart but decrease the demand on
3:15 am
the body from the rest of the heart, that means sedation, may mean hypothermia cooling someone down, so it's going to be days before we hear things definitively. >> i have the timeline yesterday when it happened, how long it took to resuscitate them, getting him to the hospital, the question is, it's still not known why he went into cardiac arrest, right. >> right. >> i wonder if the nfl are examining what happened there, and also, if they were prepared enough at this moment when this happened, are they prepared going forward? >> yeah, with regard to the first question, yes, i've been talking to sources very high up at the nfl, that is a question they're going to try to answer as to obviously what happened here, although it is worth saying we may not know for certain what happened. sometimes the answers aren't clear, but what i think is
3:16 am
really important here as well is if you look at the resources that the nfl has in order to take care of a situation like this, it's pretty incredible. they do this emergency action plan meeting before the game starts, both medical teams, the referees, everyone getting together, who does what, who's in charge. they have a level i trauma center designated. two crews of paramedics and ambulances on stand by and defibrillators available at all times. that's an incredible amount of resources, within seconds assessing him, radio signals, hand signals, bring out the paramedics. all of that took place quickly, it made a difference as we heard. most places don't have that level of resources, a high school game that may not have that same sort of thing. what happened here in terms of the sudden cardiac arrest that could happen anywhere, these resources are really crucial in
3:17 am
order to save someone's life. >> i had no idea they do all that before the game. wow, that's eye opening. it is a lot. dr. sanjay gupta, thank you very much. still this morning the nfl says the bills/bengals game will not happen this week. one of damar's teammates did this remarkable interview with our friend wolf blitzer. here's what he said about that being the right call. >> i'm blessed that we didn't have to keep playing. we don't control that. the fact that we don't have to go right back out there on that field and play, it just shows that there is care. and that's all that we can ever ask for is that we get treated as people. most people just treat z us as athletes and superstars. >> no one knows that better than coy wire who joins us from buffalo, you were safety, played the same position as hamlin.
3:18 am
talk about being there and how consequential that decision is by the nfl that you just heard him say made them feel like humans. >> reporter: right, poppy, this is an unprecedented decision. powerful too. most importantly for the human aspect. dion dawkins described there is perhaps a paradigm shift regarding the importance of player health and safety and the mental health too to cancel that game in the middle of the game. i spoke to a high ranking official heavily involved in the decision making process and they tell me there are discussions about how or if the bills/bengals game should be finished. as a former player i would be nauseated by the thought of having to return to that stadium after witnessing and being traumatized by what i witnessed. if the game is not made up,
3:19 am
since they would each have one less game than the other contenders i'm told the league would then use win percentage of win records to determine playoff berths as opposed to to their overall record which is typically how it's determined. >> not surprising that there's been outpouring in buffalo, so much support. but this much, my goodness. >> don, damar needs it, the team needs it. i spoke to an official last night at 11:30 last night, and they broke down sobbing, the heaviness of everything the team, this city, these people have been through. you walk through buffalo you see signs and shirts saying pray for damar everywhere. the buffalo sabers arriving at their game last night in washington wearing a shirt love for 3.
3:20 am
there was a powerful moment when their star, on january 3rd, just three minutes into overtime was thompson's third goal, third hat trick and 30th goal of the season. the team tweeting that this one was for damar. it may be a sign that something just higher than the people are part of the outpouring of support you speak about. >> amen to that. what's that deon dawkins was saying last night to wolf, too. a big move overnight by the fda allowing pharmacies to offer abortion pills even as some states seek to ban them. the idaho quadruple murder suspect stopped by police twice before his arrest. you'll see the body cam video.
