a little bit of a break for central and southern california as this system pushes into the northwest. we get a lot more back into central and southern california as we head into the day friday. elsewhere, we have showers and thunderstorms in the eastern portion of the country right there along the mississippi river. the potential for today does include threat for severe storms as well. perhaps a few more tornadoes. the bulk of the concern is damaging winds and the potential for large hale for cities like atlanta, pensacola and new orleans. >> allison chinchar, we're watching all of the damage in california. thanks for joining me. i'm christine romans. of committee assignments. we begin with the fallout from the second batch of classified documents found by president biden's legal team at a separate location used by biden after his time as vice president. the latest revelation fuelling republicans' claims that donald trump is being targeted, receiving unfair treatment as he's being investigated by special counsel. it is a huge opening for the new pro-trump house majority now poised to investigate democrats, though insist that biden and trump cases are not one and the same. paula reed is live in washington. paula, the different story yesterday? different story the day before and now here we go again. it is growing. what do we expect to know about the documents in the second patch? what are we finding out? >> reporter: we don't know much.
3:03 am
part of that is because the white house is making a strategic decision not to get out in front of the matter, not to answer questions, and instead let things leak out through the media. here's what we learned from our reporting. and that is that biden attorneys have found a second set of documents that include classified information at a second location. the first was an office here in d.c., as we reported, biden's lawyers were clearing out that office in november and uncovered what we learned were ten classified documents, including information about ukraine, iran, and the united kingdom, that included top secret documents. that was only known by a small group of advisers. but after that discovery that prompted them to search more locations. so the new batch so many questions, what is in them, how many were there, where were they located? and the biggest question, is this it?
3:04 am
the white house has been definitive to not say that is all there was. but the next question for merrick garland whether or not to appoint a special counsel to take this on. but it seems to strongly lean in favor of appointing a special counsel. >> and the gop is pouncing. paula reed, thank you for that. now this. >> will you step down? >> i will not. >> they said -- >> new york dis calling you a disgrace. >> why won't you resign? >> excuse us. >> wow. >> that is live on capitol hill for one of new york's newest congressman, george santos, who is under growing pressure from members of his own party, home state to resign this morning. the pressure is not just coming

3:06 am
same with the mba he says he has, not real. you just saw george santos on capitol hill facing the questions whether he's going to resign but the big question is what are congressional leaders saying? what is kevin mccarthy saying about whether or not he should step down from his new role. >> reporter: kevin mccarthy talking about this yesterday saying it's up to the voters to decide. they elected george santos, he wants to stand by the constitution, it is up to the voters to decide and he is likely to serve on some of these less prominent committees, actually get committee seats. that's what leadership is saying. they also said they want to deal with this internally. the facts are the calls this morning for his resignation continue to grow. these aren't just democrats. to give everyone the big picture, federal prosecutors are looking into george santos' finances. we know in the nation of brazil, they reopened a fraud case
