viewers joining us here in the united states and all around the world, i am rosemary church. the u.s. state of california rocked by more mass shootings just days after a massacre in the city of monterey park. a pair of new shootings claimed the lives of at least seven people on, monday and the coastal city of half moon bay. authorities say the shooter opened fire in two different locations, one of which is a mushroom farm, the farm's owners say the event has left them shaken and they do not know the suspected shooter. police took 67 year old -- into custody and they say that they found a handgun in his vehicle close by. a local sheriff addressed the impact of the violence on the small farming community. >> this kind of shooting is horrific, it is a tragedy that

we hear about far too often, but today it has hit home here in the county. speaking >> speaking with cnn, the mayor of monterey park -- the feeling of disbelief watching the tragedies unfold so soon one after another. >> my heart goes out to the community of half moon bay because i know exactly what they are going through as i was watching the press conference, it was an eerie déjà vu. i can imagine in their community, like in monterey park, the ceilings are of disbelief, why is this happening in our community, and a shark, just a sadness over a tragedy of loss of life and more violence. >> and for more on this, i am joined now by salvatore hernandez, a writer at the los angeles times. thank you so much for talking

with us. >> thank you for having me. >> 39 mass shootings in this country since the start of the, year three of those in the state of california in just the past three days. you've been covering monday's mass shooting in half moon bay where the suspect has been caught after killing it least seven people, what more are you learning about this? >> well we are learning that the suspected shooter, 67 year old -- authorities believe that he is a worker from either one of the farms, or one of the nurseries nearby the area where he but they also believe that some of the victims in there are often laborers as well. >> what are officials saying about a possible motive here? >> we do not have any information about the motives at this moment, but we do know is that the officials

suspecting that he may be a worker from the nearby area and farms in that area were also targeted, this is looking like a possible workplace shooting, at this moment what is social chilling of course is that it comes a couple of days after the monterey park shooting. so, what more are you learning about this 67-year-old suspect who is now in custody? >> we do not know much at this moment. we know that he was possibly a worker from that area, a sororities are still trying to figure out which one of the two locations that he targeted first. what we do know is that he apparently drove to one of the locations, opened fire in front of children, and then got back in his car and drove into the second location where he again opened fire on some workers out there. now we are having is seven fatalities and one person who is still with life-threatening

injuries in the hospital. >> what impact has this mass shooting had on the people of half moon bay? of course, all three shootings in the whole of the state. >> well, it is definitely a very shattering and traumatizing time for the people of california. on saturday we had the monterrey park shooting, that was targeting asian american community here, it's a suburb filled with asian americans. half moon bay, one of the supervisor could tell us that it seems that some of the workers out there were chinese workers out there in the community, so this is not just hitting hard with california, but it is hitting hard with the asian american community here in the state. >> salvador not only have we got our viewers in the united states watching but also our global viewers. for a lot of them it is very difficult to grasp what this

country goes through on a daily basis, with these shootings. as i mentioned at the start, 39 mass shootings since the start of the new year. it has only been three weeks in. how do we explain that as people who live in this country, and you learn american, how do you explain that to viewers watching, what this country is grappling with? >> it is extremely difficult and i think if you see what some of the public officials have stated during some of these incidents, they are having a very hard time grasping it. the shooting from saturday, the people are still reeling from that. we are still learning some of the names from the 11 victims out there, and then this shooting took place. governor gavin newsom, he mentioned that he was at the hospital seeing some of the victims from that shooting when he was alerted about the half moon bay shooting today. it has been just a couple of hours ago that we learned that

there is another shooting in oakland where there is, i think there are seven victims, one who has died. it is just, there is no way to come to grips without. >> it is just unbelievably tragic and it is hard to know when americans will say enough is enough. salvatore hernandez, thank you so much for joining us, we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> in the meantime in southern california the death toll has risen to 11 in the mass shooting that rocked the city of monterey park over the weekend, where also hearing from a man who is being hailed a hero for confronting and disarming the gunman after he showed up at a second dance studio on saturday night. cnn has obtained this exclusive footage showing random -- approaching the suspect after he entered the studio in alejandro with a weapon. it also captures a struggle

between the two that begins in the doorway and then continues just outside of that room. he says that he sprang into action after realizing there was an imminent threat, take a listen. >> i'm not going to lie, i did freeze up when i saw him with the gun, i had many thoughts where i would think i'm going to die, this is it, this is the end for me. but then something happened, something came over me. i just had this barrage of thought and adrenaline and in this sort of situation, and i was able to come to the conclusion that i needed to do something. i needed to grab the gun. i need to save myself and the people inside. >> extraordinary actions there. the 11 victims of the dance hall shooting in monterey park will be remembered and honored during a vigil monday night. the california lawmaker who represents the district spoke

about brandon say, and his heroic actions to stop the gunman. >> he is only 26 years old and yet, when he saw the shooter come in with the gun he, a very humble and modest young man, actually took him on, actually fought with him to wrestle control of the gun. if he had not done that a number of victims, i think would have been twice as many. >> police are revealing new details of the investigation into the monterey park shooting, but still do not know what motivated the gunman opened fire. the los angeles county sheriff says that the gunman fired 42 rounds during the massacre at the dance studio saturday night, and that the gunman's home, investigators found a rifle and hundreds of rounds of

ammunition. they also discovered items that are leading them to believe that he was building homemade fire arms oppressors. a handgun was also found in the gunmen's white van. investigators are working to confirm where he got all of the firearms that have been recovered. cnn's natasha chen has been to following developments for us and has the latest now from monterrey park. >> on the eve of the lunar new year, in the predominantly asian american community of monterey park california, there was dancing in joyful celebration. then gunfire. >> i got three immediate in here, and approximately ten deceased. >> police say a 72 year old man, armed with a semi automatic pistol opened fire on people inside the star ballroom on saturday night. >> investigators recovered a total of 42 shell casings, and a large capacity magazine. investigators also recovered a near ringo, seven point 62 by

25 handgun from inside the suspects cargo bay. >> not long after local streets were filled with people celebrating the new, year at least 11 people were killed in the shooting in the dance studio. several more are still hospitalized. additional units requested, gunshot wounds. >> we've got more and more credible, one more. immediate >> in the massacre, the gunman left monterey park employees say left to secondary studio in the nearby community. there he encountered brandon tsay, working at the ticket, booted interview with abc said the gunman pointed a semi automatic weapon at him. >> my first thought was i'm gonna die here this is it. >> tsay said that he lunged at the gunman. >> i was trying to use my elbows to separate the gun away from him, putting some distance. finally at one point i was able to pull the gun away from him, shove him aside, create some distance. >> the gun still his hand, tsay said he called police.

he's now being hailed as a hero saying preventing further violence. >> after nearly a 12-hour man hunt, law enforcement located the gunman's vehicle and 72 year old -- was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. police say they still don't have a motive for the attack, but evidence inside the van tied him to the shootings and say that he may have targeted specific victims. >> several people who knew try and, said that he taught informal dance lessons at the studio where he unloaded a barrage of gunfire and his ex wife says that where he met. -- are among the dead. most of whom were in their 60s and 70s. the community of monterey park and the tight-knit dance community in the area are now coming to terms with the devastating violence, during what was supposed to be a celebration of hope and peace. >> there are no words to describe how i am feeling.

communications division received notification of multiple gunshot wound victims whose self transported to local hospitals in the area. >> police say those who are wounded are in stable condition, they have not yet released details on the person who is killed. and yet another deadly shooting, this one in the mid western u.s.. police in iowa say in 18 year old has been arrested and charged for an apparent gang related shooting, at an educational nonprofit organization on monday. two students were killed and the programs founder, a hip-hop artist known as will caps, was seriously injured. please believe this stemmed from an ongoing gang dispute. two other people are also in custody as the investigation continues. and still to come, a family of a black man who died after a police stop say their son was beaten nonstop by officers. we will have details, next.

mother could not make it through the first minute. the family also said that during what they called about the three minutes that police officers were beating on nichols, he asked them reportedly what did i do? >> our son ran because you are scared for his life. he did not run it because he was trying to get rid of no drugs, guns, know any of that. he ran because he was scared for his life. and when you see the video you will see why he was scared for his life. >> the family and the attorney said that they were careful to offer too many details about what they saw in those videos because there is an ongoing investigation, not only in the district county office investigating, but so is the tendency in fear of estimation and the division of civil rights for the department of justice. meanwhile those five officers that were involved in tyre nickels arrest of all been fired. i did reach out and speak to a spokesperson of the district attorney's office in shelby county, and it said it's not a matter of if but when the video

returning to our top story, a pair of deadly shootings in half moon bay california. at least seven people were killed and one person critically injured in shootings that took place at separate locations in the coastal community. one at a mushroom farm, the other taking place near a trucking facility. police say the suspect was taken into custody just a few hours after the shootings, he's been identified as 67 year old chunli zhao. authorities believe he acted alone and so far the motive is not known. officials in half moon bay are expressing their shock and sadness. >> this is something that we get to watch on the news, you never think that it is going to come and hit home. today we are on the news. >> the violence comes just days after the state was shaken by a

mass shooting to the south in monterey park, that killed at least 11 people. the deputy chief of staff to ukraine's president has attended his resignation. -- posted a statement on his official telegram account saying it was his decision to step down, he thanked the president volodymyr zelenskyy and the country's mayors and military administrators, but he did not say why he was resigning. a senior u.s. military official says russia has sent tens of thousands of reinforcements to the front lines in ukraine over the past few months ahead of a planned spring offensive. but the source says that the troops are ill-equipped, ill trained, and have made little difference in the fight. meanwhile, ukraine could be getting some help on the battlefield as poland's foreign minister says warsaw will send german made leopard tanks whether or not any countries

new ones, passing some basic common sense gun laws would be one thing that you could be doing right now and that is something that has to be done. it's not going to solve everything, it's not gonna prevent every gun shooting, but it is something that can be done. rather than always being so reactive as this one's doing this, this one is doing that, it's a mental health issue. sure, there are lots of mental health issues, they need to be addressed, but you cannot sort of be doing one thing at the time. you need to press forward because it's not just a reactive situation. >> california lawmaker mark berman spoke with cnn about the rampant gun violence in america and the emotional impact it is having on children. here is what he said. >> i had a couple of school classes up in the capitol last year and when i asked them, what is the one thing that you want to change in your community there are two different groups. the first group, these are fourth grade students, ten year olds. the first group the first thing they said was no more shootings

after a gunman opened fire at two separate locations in half moon bay, just south of san francisco. an eighth victim was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. police took the suspected gunman into custody a few hours after the shootings, he has been identified as 67-year-old chunli zhao. >> at 4:40 pm, chunli zhao was located in his vehicle, in the parking lot of the sheriff substation in half moon bay. by a sheriff's deputy. he was taken into custody without incident and a semiautomatic handgun was located in his vehicle. chunli zhao it's believed to have acted alone and there is no further threat to this community. >> this is the second mass shooting in california in as many days. on saturday, at least 11 people were killed when a gunman opened fire in the town of monterey park outside los

angeles. the l.a. county sheriff tweeting, we join our community in mourning for the families and friends of those lost in this senseless act of violence. as we learn more about the mass shootings in half moon bay and the apprehension of the suspect, please remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. law enforcement in and out of l.a. county law are working daily responding, to calls for service in our communities. in washington d.c. a jury has found more members of the far-right militia group, oath keepers, guilty of crimes related to the january 6th insurrection. the convictions are a big win for federal prosecutors who pushed for the rare charge of seditious conspiracy. cnn's whitney wild has our report. >> all four men convicted of seditious conspiracy, this is so notable because in the first trial, this first ten-week

trial of the oath keepers that occurred in the fall, only two members out of five or convicted on seditious conspiracy. this charge is very hard to prove, it's very rare that is even charged at all and rare that it results and conviction. so this case represents a huge win for the justice department. more specifically about this case, it involved three members of the oath keepers, one person who is associated with this far-right militia. those four men are robert -- joseph packet, -- and edward vallejo. they are accused of plotting to stop the certification of joe biden's 2020 -- that conspiracy culminated in the attack on the u.s. capitol on january 6th 2021. again this charge is rare it is severe, and it represents basically a slam dunk for the justice department knowing that they were able to secure this conviction against all four defenses this case. in a previous case, they were not able to secure surges conspiracy convictions against

stewart rhodes, was basically the leader of the oath keepers, and the head of the entire organization, and another man may named kelly meggs. in both cases he evidence came from the -- which were sometimes caught on video, other times they had put those words in text messages to groups, and emails to open letters. in this latest case, a prosecutor said that one defendant, saying millions will die, get your soul ready. that was the language, and actually a piece of video that prosecutors used in the closing arguments of this case. -- they all faced additional charges and were convicted on some of those charges including obstruction of an official proceeding, all four men now face the possibility of decades in prison. whitney wild, cnn, washington. >> a fulton county judge will hold a hearing in the coming hours to decide whether to release the grand jury report on donald trump's election interference. attorneys for trump say that he
