for the heaviest snowfall of the season. we could see delays at airports in chicago, detroit, texas they're cleaning up this morning. we're hearing stories from s survivors who witnessed the sheer power of the tornado. >> you could see the overhead door. i was shutting that. we ran into the rick sestrooms. that's when everything come down on top of us. >> we were all inside. the tornado, we could hear the noise. drop down ceiling inside started lifting up and down. we all went into the bathroom. the storm went over quick, came outside and saw the damage. we don't know where that trailer came from, by the way. >> this is serious. look at that, poppy. >> i know. >> that is a gas line, open gas line in texas spewing flames up

from the ground in the middle of the wreckage there, emergency responders saying they were swamped with 911 calls for building collapses and other things, rosa flores is live on the ground in texas this morning. wow, this is crazy, rosa. >> reporter: it is. no question a path of destruction where the tornados and storms hit. you can see it behind me, there's downed power lines and the mangled mess you see behind the power lines, that used to be a gym. the owner telling our affiliate they hid in the bathroom at the time to save their lives and they say the action saved their lives. so this morning people here in the houston area counting their blessings because no fatalities have been reported. >> couldn't see anything. just went white, everything went white, explosions were happening. >> reporter: the devastating

scenes of destruction after more than a dozen tornados reportedly touched down in texas and louisiana. >> this might be the worst damage that i've seen. just catastrophic. >> reporter: this neighborhood outside of houston, left in ruins with roofs torn clear off homes. >> we ran to the restrooms and watched the building fall. luckily the restroom didn't fall. >> reporter: the damage leaving families in pasadena, texas displaced from their homes and facing the task of rebuilding. >> it was the most scary thing in my life. but thank to god that we are here and alive. >> reporter: this family said the second story of their home is destroyed. >> house is gone, whole top section of the house is completely ruined. so it's toast. the house will be torn down now. so kind of hard to take but we're alive and that's the main thing. >> the mayor stressing the severity of the weather event.

>> we have an all hands on deck right now of all our neighborhoods, the tornados touched here, touched there, we're doing everything we can to make sure our citizens are safe. >> reporter: the storm was so forceful it mangled cars. there is a car yards from where we are, i talked to the sister of the owner of that car she tells me the car was parked over where i am actually standing. the tornados left destruction in their wake, filling the streets with debris, destroying stores, homes, and businesses. this church destroyed, the roof is gone. you can see tables and furniture strewn across the rooms. an assisted living facility sustained structural damage. and this clinic torn apart. the windows shattered and debris filling the parking lot.

>> the lights kept flickering and we could hear a loud explosion. i locked the door and was running towards the back and as i was going towards the door, the glass came in and then just the building started ripping apart. >> reporter: now, those cars that you saw that were mangled and overturned, that was in der park. i talked to the owner of one of those cars, she described the tense moment. she was safe, she was inside the building at the time the tornado hit in that area. but she said her car was parked yards from where it was, so it wasn't just mangled. this storm, this tornado, moved vehicles yards from where they were parked. >> unbelievable. rosa will continue to follow throughout the hours on cnn. thank you so much. breaking news moments ago, a major development in the war in ukraine after weeks of pressure,

germany announcing it will send the leopard two tanks to the war zone, joining the united states in doing so. frederik pleitgen joins us live. this is huge news and welcome news for volodymyr zelenskyy and all of ukraine. >> reporter: yeah, it certainly is. you heard yesterday this was probably going to happen. the ukrainians are happy. we got details from the germans, they say the main goal is to create in the end two tank battalions, they're to get, that would be about 88 of these leopard tanks. but they say in a first step they'll send 14 of the tanks as fast as possible. the germans saying they want the trainings to start as fast as possible. one interesting nuance we got from the germans. they are saying they are going to give permission to other european countries that own the tanks to send the leopard two tanks to ukrainian as well.

that means the ukrainians could get a lot of these tanks quickly. we know this came after tough negotiations between the germans and the united states. in the end the united states relenting to sending abrams main battle tanks to ukraine as well. the ukrainians happy to be getting tanks of german make and american make in the not too distance future. >> there's been quite the response from russia. >> reporter: you're right. i was messaging with the kremlin spokesman a little while ago. he was saying the russians say this increases the tensions on the continent, suffering will increase for the ukrainians as well. he wrote that in a message to me. but strong words from the russian ambassador to the united states he said abrams tanks that enter ukraine will be destroyed by the russians. but the russians have said that about every weapons system the

u.s. and allies have sent so far. that has not happened. but the ukrainians happy with these decisions getting more tanks than they thought. >> all ahead of what is expected to be a real russian escalation in the spring. meantime, the fbi and justice department launching reviews of the classified documents discovered at the indiana home of the former vice president, mike pence. about a dozen documents were found in pence's home. they were immediately turned over to the fbi. paula reid is on this story. good morning to you. pence claimed in the past he has no classified documents. what's his explanation? he said on tape that he didn't have any, and now this. >> reporter: exactly. now this. but his lawyer says that pence was unaware that he had these classified materials. at this point, don, we don't know what the documents were or their level of classification. but this is the third time in

recent history where a former president or vice president has retained classified documents after leaving office. lawyers for former vice president mike pence discovered about a dozen documents marked classified at his indiana home last week. pence previously insisted he did not possess any such materials. >> well, there would be no reason to have classified documents, particularly if they were in an unprotected area. but he asked his lawyers to conduct a search of his home in an abundance of caution in the wake of classified documents being found connected to president biden. >> people know i take classified documents seriously. >> reporter: in a letter obtained by cnn, pence's representative to the archives, greg jacobs wrote a small number of documents bearing classified markings were inadvertently

boxed and transported to the vice president's home. the classified material was stored in boxes that first went to pence's temporary home in virginia before being moved to indiana but the boxes were not stored in a secure area. his lawyers say he was unaware of the materials, pence shared his process for handling such documents before. >> i go to the safe where my military aide would place the classified materials, i pull them out, review them, receive a presentation to them. and frankly, more often than not, larry, i would simply return them back to the file that i had received them in. >> reporter: the justice department is now reviewing how the materials ended up at pence's house, a similar review last year over classified documents found at president biden's home and office prompted the appointment of a special counsel. >> i'm here today to announce the appointment of robert hur as

a special counsel. >> reporter: former president trump is also under investigation for possibly mishandling classified information as well as other crimes including obstruction. >> we did nothing wrong. i had the right to declassify. >> reporter: pence's estranged former political partner offered support yesterday writing on social media, mike pence is an innocent man, he never did anything knowingly dishonest in his life. leave him alone. it is unclear whether a special counsel will be needed in this case, but pence previously pushed for an investigation of others. >> the handling of classified materials is a very serious issue for our nation and we ought to take it seriously. but there ought to be equal treatment under the law. >> reporter: cnn reached out to former presidents clinton, bush and obama. their representatives say they handed over every classified document they possess and don't

decision he was going to make for months and years now. ever since democrats voted on the house floor to reject two members from their committees, to kick them off committees, paul gosar and marjorie taylor greene, for making threatening comments at the time against their sitting colleagues. that was something that house speaker nancy pelosi said warranted action from house democrats. kevin mccarthy said this last night about his reasoning for kicking schiff and swalwell off the intel committee. >> this is not anything political. this is not similar to what the democrats did. but integrity matters. and they have failed in that place from adam schiff using the position of the intel chair, lying to the american public again and again. >> reporter: but mccarthy has been warning for months now that this was the action he was going to take. he's been saying that democrats made their bed years ago when

about, you know, a bullet wound or a loved one's life lost it's a myriad of issues. it's the person on the hospital bed whose leg is shattered, who says i need to get out of here because i can't afford the health care bills. or i need to get out of here because i can't lose my job tomorrow. the farm workers here have said i have no paycheck today, i have no cash. i can't buy food tonight. the complete abject failure of our immigration policies exposed yesterday and today. complete utter abject failure of commons on gun safety and immigration policy. for me, i guess maybe after 22 days and 32 trillion gallons of waterfalling on the state and being in the droughts and floods, and two mass shootings

in two days i'm allowed to express myself with what i'm not seeing nationally and in congress right now. we need the federal government to do its job. this is on everybody. we've chosen this. this is our decision, to live in these deciconditions. it doesn't exist anywhere else in the world. we can say thoughts and prayers or look in the mirror and say this is the price of whatever, fill in the blank, freedom? what to have our kids do six or seven drills hiding under a desk. freedom from what, being vulnerable dancing in a crowd on new year's eve? later this hour we'll look at the mass violence taking place across america in our streets and communities in a way that just doesn't happen to this level elsewhere in the world. you cannot argue with the

christine romans is here along with sarah fisher. >> that took me back, by the way. >> what? >> when i would do the 9:00 a.m. show and we would pause and then go to christine for the bell. >> yeah. for the bell. >> we talk about the market. >> what happened is at the opening bell they have an auction that sets the opening price, and it didn't happen. so suddenly you had these automatic canceled orders. you couldn't sort of set the price for the day, so it was a technical glitch that caused all kinds of problems at the new york stock exchange. 250 stocks effected, 80 had to halt the trading. for investors like most of us who are probably buy and hold investors this affected traders on the floor and the institutional investor. if you're a buy and hold, they're going to work out the erroneous prices. it was a terrible day with so much news and concerns about

about the huge -- the first time the biden administration, under doj, has taken on big tech in this way. a huge lawsuit against charges against google. explain why it matters. >> it matters because google is the biggest advertising business in the world, over $200 billion in revenue a year. so what the justice department is saying is, we want to minimize that. we want to make it easier for everybody, including news publishers like my company, axios and cnn to make money. this could dramatically reduce google's ability to remain one of the largest companies in the world. and google says? >> this is a bad argument we're not doing anything wrong so you can't punish us, break us up. that's everyone's defense when the justice department comes after them. but they have a point, google is 200, meta is 116 billion. the third is amazon and ten cent and those are 30 and 40 billion. >> i'm fascinating by the way anti-trust has changed in this

daylight on fifth avenue. eva mckend with the latest. now what? >> reporter: good morning to you. you would think if there was a mugging in broad daylight in the middle of the summer in manhattan as someone was leaving a commercial building and the victim was robbed down to his shoes as santos claims there would be a police report but a source tells cnn no such report exists. to be clear, that doesn't mean this incident didn't occur but it raises eyebrows in the context of the many false claims that santos has made. >> can you tell us if you lied on your financial disclosure reports. >> reporter: embattled congressman george santos back at work on capitol hill dodging tough questions from reporters, as new revelations about public claims he made pile up. the latest coming from a re recently released interview with

a brazilian podcast, taped in december shortly after he won election in new york's third district. santos claimed in the interview, done in portuguese, that he was mugged on fifth avenue in new york city in the summer of 2021 as he was walking out a building in broad daylight. >> translator: they robbed me, took my bag, my shoes, and watch. >> reporter: but a source tells cnn there's no evidence that there's no report. it draws further scrutiny of the claim made by santos who has already admitted to lying about key parts of his biography. another claim that santos made in the interview that's raising eyebrows he survived an assassination attempt. >> translator: we have suffered life attack, assassination attempt, threatening letter, having to have security guards and police escorts in front of

now federal law enforcement wants to know what's in the documents and how they ended up at pence's home. here's what pence said last fall. >> did you take any classified documents with you from the white house? >> uh, i did not. >> do you see any reason for anyone to take classified documents with them leaving the white house. >> well, there would be no reason to have classified documents, particularly if they were in an unprotected area. >> these responses a lot of them getting these folks into hot water now. joining us the former defense secretary under former president trump, i should say trump and pence. good morning. >> good morning. >> when he said i didn't take, maybe he didn't, maybe it was a staffer. but still saying there's no reason for someone to have them in their possession. what do you think of pence finding them in his home and the abc interview? >> i've known mike pence for a few years now.

i think he's a man of integrity. and he takes the handling of classified documents seriously. with regard to his response that's correct, no need for anyone who have classified documents outside a secure facility. but an investigation needs to happen to find out what occurred. i saw a report that apparently the boxes were never unpacked or touched since leaving the white house a couple years ago but we need to find out what happened and do an assessment. >> lindsey graham has said the same thing you said similarly about current president saying he's a man of integrity and saying he would doubt there's something nefarious going on. do you feel the same way about biden? >> you need to investigate it and find out what happened. >> i meant the integrity part. >> i don't know president biden well. i know mike pence. i've had numerous interactions with him. that's not to say one way or the other. what's most perplexing about

biden's thing or the documents from the senate, that's 16 or so years ago. i worked in the house, senate, there aren't that many documents floating around and outside of facility and secure spaces. that's perplexing for me. >> that's a good point, given the fact that he was chair of the senate relations committee. there is the question of overclassification. when you tried to get your memoir clear in your time in the trump administration. the pentagon blocked a lot of it because of classification claims, take them to court, you win a bunch of their redactions. looking back at "the washington post" editorial, 1998, government keeps too many secrets, keeps materials classified far too long. is this evidence perhaps that's correct? >> it could be. there is overclassification. overclassification of things that should be transparent to the american people or hurts our national security because we

don't share the information with allies and partners. it's gone on for years, we need to tackle the problem. i had the issue with my book. after i took them to court they quickly backed down on nearly all the things they classified. there are still a few things that remain redacted in my memoir. >> i want to turn to ukraine. good news this morning, germany saying they're sending the leopard two tanks to ukraine. the u.s. sending tanks as well. will this make a difference? >> tanks will make a difference because they are what is needed to conduct a counter offensive by ukraine to push russia out of eastern ukraine and the south, to include crimea. the challenge now is to get the tanks quickly to the ukrainian army, to train them, make sure the maintenance and logistics are in place because we expect one of two things will happen, russia will conduct an offensive

in march or ukraine will conduct a counter offensive before then but march is only five weeks away. you have to get the tanks there, train crews, we're really up against the clock right now. >> one question to you before you go, se cretary. and that is how closely the biden administration will have raised concerns with china about chinese companies selling nonlethal weapons to russia. what is your concern, because remember at the outset of the war, china and russia publically declared this friendship without limits. >> right. they announced that strategic partnership just before the invasion last year. and it's continued. we believe that chinese entities are buying russian energy and things like that. i think clearly russia is suffering due to economic

sanctions, financial sanctions, other things. we don't need countries like china providing them arms, assi assistants, technology, you name it, whatever russia needs to resuscitate the military machine, we need to block that. that would be my immediate concern with regard to ukraine. >> one clarification to make sure here. i'm wondering how many officials in washington are going through their things. you have handled classified information for decades. have you taken a look to make sure you don't have documents anywhere in your offices or any of your possession? >> yeah. look, i've had security clearance since the age of 18. we handle it very diligently at dod. when i left office last year, the few boxes i went through, i went through quickly and my staff was diligent about these things so i'm confident that's not the case. >> thank you, secretary. always a pleasure. >> thank you. a new study looked at the

it's easy to love a subaru. welcome back to "cnn this morning." a new study finds that -- there's a new study that finds that most mass shooters have something in common. they have usually suffered a major setback in life. this looked at 173 mass casualty incidents between 2016 and 2020 and found most attackers experienced a significant personal change in the year before they carried out that attack. fascinating. our whitney wild joins me with more. what else can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning to you. as they shared this, basically major life setback in the year before the attack. attackers also display concerning or threatening behavior in the years prior to actually committing an attack. and these behaviors are often noticed and reported by people

closest to them. again, this includes, in the year before the attack, a significant personal challenge that can include a financial problem, a family problem, a health problem. interestingly, the motivations varied. but half of the attackers were motivated at least in part by some kind of grievance and while behaviors are similar, there's no standard demographic profile about half of the attackers were white, 34% were black. two thirds of the attackers had a criminal history. and noticeably, 73% used firearms. when we look across the spectrum for whom this information is so important, poppy, what the data shows is this is affecting every sector of society. the head of the national threat assessment center for the secret service pointed out they are hearing from people eager for this information and training. they train tens of thousands of people across the spectrum every
