we have a lot to talk about. we are one night away from what will be the unofficial kickoff of joe biden's likely reelection run also known as his state of the union address. what case really make to the nation to elect him to a second term? a lot of political types thinks it is not just what he says, it is how he appears. president biden would be 82 if he wins reelection. he is already the oldest american president ever. is that why so many people are still on the fence? >> plus, lebron james was on his way to break the nba's all-time scoring record. remember when he was a real dries to just start up and dribble? he did not take that advice. now he is just 36 points shy of lakers legend kareem abdul debars record. we will talk about it. the stressful part for me is competing every single day. >> also, nerve-racking moments

if the fedex person had not been on the ball like he was, you don't understand when they are flying in like that and when you are getting ready to land you can't really see anything underneath. you he saw that as he was coming in and aborted his touchdown just at the last few minutes, hundred feet is not long. the airplane itself from ground to tail is only about 60 feet itself,, saw 100 feet is not far at all. this should not have happened. >> but i don't get it, how did it happen? isn't this why air traffic control is pushed people waiting? >> yeah. they are. and they do have in most airports, 35 of the largest airports have ground surface -- where the airplanes are in when they are moving in when they are not moving. in this airport does not have that. so that would've helped them but you can't rely on that. you still have to make your decisions and the only thing that i think could've happened is the air traffic controller asked southwest to come on and southwest took a little longer than normal to actually hit the guns and go so that could have caused the timing to be off but it should never have been that close in the first place, if

for you. and this is, to tell you how many tears of safety there are including the air traffic control monitors that they have and then again each of the pilots just looking after the safety of the passengers on board. so the fact that this was a safe flight tells you that even when things go wrong there are very many tears to make sure that something doesn't go deadly wrong. you have to make sure that you understand that to be able to get on their under fly and understand how much safety in how many levels of safety there are to prevent piecing from happening. and it can worry you. i understand. that >> s. e., by the way,

facts to care about my feelings. here they are, right now. -- airline issues in just the past month. january 11th, faa system outage halts domestic air travel. that was also nerve-racking. i don't like it when the whole system goes down. >> not a safety issue, but okay. >> coming up, holder jets january 17th, near collision at jfk airport. february 3rd, united plane clips another plane. a near miss. that was a hit, okay. february 5th, near collision we've been talking about. that isn't enough for you, i want you to to show you the animation that we did of how close they came to each other. so this is the fedex plane trying to land and this is the southwest airlines trying to take off. that is what happened right there. >> that is terrifying. that is terrifying. yes. i have to fly very soon. i am terrified of that happening now!

and let's keep playing it over and over again so i don't sleep tonight. >> i won't do that. oh yes i will. here it is. >> but david, i know that you have also talked about how there is no faa administrator. but that doesn't really affect it. does that really affect what is happening on the ground? that is a suit in washington d. c.. does that really tropical down what is happening with runway? >> you think of these break broad scope things that might affect things and in this case it actually does. because you look at this air service detection system and it is only in 35 airports. why is it not in more? and you look at the fact that the system went down. the air traffic control system, the no ten system that went down. i really really that directly to the fact that there is more interim faa directors than there have been faa directors in the last 5 to 10 years. so it is something to look at. and here is the reason that these systems take a long time to develop. it takes 6 to 10 years to go through the life cycle, the developmental life cycle. in those times, when you change administrators this instance don't get the tension they need. they don't get the function they need. it changes all the time. it is hard to give a system to get it completely redone -- they end up putting patches on old systems that were designed in the 60s and 70s and they

president biden getting ready for the state of the union address tomorrow night, as a cell voters in a second term. do voters want to hear about as many accomplishments, or will they be focused on how he looks and sounds. back with me john berman, -- john was the answer to that? >> i think it's both. i think it's no secret that joe biden is not a young man at

this point, i think largely that's baked on the cake, americans except they have a much older president in the united states. but every time you does a big public fan like this, i think people are watching. by and large, every time he's done a big public thing, for which is been planning, teleprompter speech he said that mark at the big question for him is. is how does the approaches, as he approaches as a launch first 2024 presidential campaign? and if so, what is he running on? he has benefited, i think, largely and politically for a few years now from instead of telling people what he is four instead proving to people who he is not. he is sort of succeeding in opposition to things for years. i am curious if he continues to try to hit that mark. he is saying, elise i am not these guys.

>> i think heels are to stand for unity. talked about that a lot, talks about his accomplishments a lot. building bridges. i don't think he only defines himself as non trump. i'm >> not saying he only defines himself as not being trump, i think a lot of his political success has come from that. if you look at the midterms where democrats did better than i think people expected they would, i think that success came from not being trump, not being some of the republicans. i don't think it came from the infrastructure bill and whatever bipartisan omnibus

things they got through. his >> true. >> messaging issue still, democrats not getting through. i beg to differ. i don't know that most people are paying much attention at all to any of this successes. i think they are just stuck on the fact that he is an old man. >> what could they do differently? >> you do with what you have. we have joe biden so we have gone with joe biden. but i think that further, timing, matters. we are in the age of media and things have to make sense and they have to click. they have to be pretty enough to be all the things. i just feel i am afraid that joe biden not just because of the age, but because of the messaging and the lack thereof that he is just going to have an uphill battle. >> yeah, listen, i am often on the air when joe biden is giving a speech so i am a captive audience, i listen to more of joe biden speeches than i think -- so it is -- because he definitely knows it that he is not -- resonating. a >> couple of things. i think one of the mistakes he made leading up to the midterms that he didn't completely read the room. he talked about the strong economy and how great the country is doing in his numbers could have been right that is just not how a lot of people felt. and so to feel peoples pain was

a gift of clinton's. i don't think it is the gift of bidens and tomorrow i would hope that he would acknowledge that people are still feeling pinched at the pump and at the grocery store. he has enough to pretend that doesn't exist. he could lean into it and say we have got a lot of work to do. i would also, to john's point, keep making the contrast. the threat is still inside the house. and i think that it would be wise to talk about, not the things republicans will do but the things they've already done. and the stuff they want to do more of. i would call out how asinine and crazy and extreme some of the stuff is that republicans want to do and i would make the case, if i were joe biden, that

irrational, common sense, i am not going to blow the place down and i am not here for the destruction and destruction, i'm here to get us on the right track. that might be good enough of a message for a relaunch if that is what tomorrow is partly about. >> we hope. i am afraid that the vice president has been -- >> where? where has she been? let's talk about that. so, is not part of what will go into people's calculation for his, if they are reelecting him -- >> if you think about the coalition, the reason biden is there is not because of a bunch of old white man. it is because of everyone else. everyone else is invisible in whatever is happening, positive or not. it is a problem for that core coalition that said yes, we will give you a shot. i hate to say it but representation absolutely matters. obviously the vice president is a very busy woman doing a lot of work, hard things that we're

never going to know about. >> why won't we know about them? >> that is my question. back to my point about messaging. why don't we see her? why don't we feel? her why doesn't she have a platform in his administration where we can tangibly feel a black woman outwork? >> can i take a guess? i don't know the answer. and i don't doubt that she is working hard. i'm not one of the people who say oh she is not doing anything i think she's working very hard. it feels to me like talking too much about kamala and putting kamala harris out front where -- joe biden look less capable -- she's part of why i voted for her. i am republican. i voted for joe biden because i thought, he is not crazy any wants to make america good again.

but his vice president mattered. he could've picked people that i would not have voted for. he picked kamala and i thought, she is smart, she's not to progressive. she is going to fix some problems. where has she been? >> you think they should put her out more? make her more of a public face of the administration? do you think that would be good politics, at this point? >> i want to hear more from her. i feel like the reason they are not is to protect joe biden. i think that kind of sucks. >> i think that if that is in play, it is a bad play. that doesn't protect him. it does make him look like a partner. what we wanted in them is a partnership. that partnership matters. >> do you have a theory on this? >> i don't. i am not sure it is because of fear of how it will make him look.
