heartbreaking images continuing to come out of turkey and syria this morning. rescuers there doing their best to dig through tons of debris hoping, looking for survivors after monday's massive 7.8 earthquake and the number of incredibly strong aftershocks. i wanted to warn you, and we have shown you them before, but the images that you are about to see are disturbing. as of this moment, at least 5,000 people that we know of have been killed, including this 15-year-old, and her father sitting distraught clutching her hand after she was crushed under layers of rubble. >> that poor man and little girl and did not survive with conditions brutal and stuck outside under freezing temperatures and waiting for some help to come. >> translator: i have two nephews in the wreckage behind me, and at 2:00 yesterday,
7:02 am
building collapsed and hundreds more buildings like this, and thousands under the rubble, and the turkish authorities won't let them save us by our means, but they won't send anyone to help either. >> officials have said that hundreds of aftershocks have rocked the area, including one that is as strong as the original one, and look at the buildings just collapsing into dust before our eyes. becky anderson is in turkey, and we spoke to you earlier, and you were trying to see a rescue there earlier, and describe what you are seeing there earlier. >> jim, it is heartbreaking, and it is that they are about to call for quiet once again. this building behind me has completely collapsed. as the search and rescue teams here understand it, they believe that there are more than 15 people still in the rubble
7:03 am
beneath this building. if you are just looking to the building on the left-hand side, you can see the extent of the building as it stood just some 40 hours ago before that earthquake at 4:30 in the morning on monday. and now they are just turning generator down, and i am going to stand out of the shot, because they are going to call for quiet, and it sounds as if they are now going to be hoping for an extraction. we will wait for it, because they have kept the generator on, and that means they have not asked for silence as of yet. they have heard the voices, jim, of three people during the period of time that we have been here. so they are hoping, and they aring to be able to extract people alive still from here. there is hope. it has been 40 hours now, and it
7:04 am
is bitterly cold. it is just about minus 1 here at present and it was bitterly cold here at 4:00 in morning when it struck, and there are pockets where people can be alive and over the years when we have reported on this, people do survive if they are warm and if they have water, they can survive for as many as 13 day, but obviously the search and rescue becomes a recovery situation the longer that the things go on, and we have been talking to people who are gathered here and people just behind me here with their blankets on, and this group of people over here from this building, and we have been talking to a gentleman whose mom and dad live in this building. he was in tears. he is just hoping that his mom and dad may survive this, but

yeah, it is a desperate situation here in gaziantep, and my apologies, because i am watching the van behind me, as people are just hoping for good news behind me, jim. >> and becky, there are dozens of countries committed to sending the aid, and some of the teams are in the region, but part of the challenge in some of the areas is not having enough people in the ground, but getting to some of the areas, right, becky? >> you are absolutely right, and we came a in with the emirati team, and they sent a search and rescue team, and sent equipment, and huge equipment and ambulances and search and rescue vehicles, and so we came in on that aid flight overnight, and they are one of as i understand it of 50 countries sending in the equipment, sonar devices and dogs and assets on the ground, and equipment, and to ensure
7:06 am
that there is as much done as possible in the situations like this, but you are absolutely right to point out that ga gaziantep is a relatively new town and the services are relatively new and robust and as we came in from the airport a lot of the buildings retained structure and it is not clear coming in from the airport that all buildings from any stretch of the imagination have been affected, but some areas in town where you can see the devastation behind me and that is all up and down this area, and so the teams coming in are crucial, because the turkish authorities are stretched in a relatively modern and relatively modern city like gaziantep so you can only imagine in the cities as gloes epicenter of
7:07 am
this earthquake but by no means as robust to say that the older buildings, and buildings that weren't built to withstand a quake like this, and don't forget at 7.8, and this is the first quake. there has been as you are rightly point out more than 100 aftershock, and some of them as big as the original aftershock. it is unclear at this point just what sort of devastation exists outside of this area, and spare a thought for those in aleppo and i spoke to a gentleman who spoke to his sister, and they have no electricity or fuel and they are in a mosque a family i am referring to are sheltering in a mosque and she is saying that the buildings around her are devastated in aleppo and very little aid getting into that area, and much easier to get the aid into here, jim. >> that image of the father

7:10 am
get done in the next two year, but keep in mind there is somebody sitting behind him for the first time in this setting, and that is of course house speaker kevin mccarthy and just a reminder all throughout the night that the president now confronts a newly divided congress, and we saw mccarthy giving a prebuttal of sorts of some of the things that he would like the president to get done, but there is a big reminder to night that the political environment that he is facing the next two years is going to be entirely different than what he has had in the last two years. >> m.j. lee at the white house, thanks so much. so with me to discuss more of the president's speech, we will have doug high and maria cardona. and maria, the numbers are not looking good. 62% of the americans don't think that he has accomplished much,

7:12 am
can't do it, he is not popular enough or effective enough, and every single time he doesn't just get it done, but he is surpassing the expectation, and that what is going to happen tonight and the nex two year, and the contrast with kevin mccarthy in the back is going to remind people what kevin mccarthy had to go through to get there, striking a corrupt bargain and who knows how many deals to break with the maga extremists in his party, and this is going to be a big contrast with the massive accomplishments of the last democratic congress. first is what this republican congress can get accomplished. >> doug high, a republican point of view here, and maria there has a point there in midterm, and something about biden in the democratic messages worked to overperform there, but as you know, the elections are won and lost with the independents and moderate republicans, and can he change the minds tonight?
7:13 am
>> it is not clear if he can. so much has changed in the past three months. the week after the election day, and we often say in the politics the rhetoric and the reality. the rhetoric said that the republican party is dead, because of the extreme candidates and maga if you want to say that, but now the democrats haed victory rally, but now with kevin mccarthy as speaker of the house, it means that biden legislation is done as far as getting the things through the capitol hill, and so he can talk about the debt ceiling, and there are accomplishment, but it is very much about janet jackson, what have you done for me lately, and this is going to be difficult for him for the next year or two. >> maria, a point, and he is not going to be passing massive bills with the republicans controlling the hour, and he has simple things to do like raising

7:15 am
about the outreach to the republican, and this is something that biden has done against the advice of his own party, and here is the answer, and i want your response. >> he has extended the olive branch to speaker mccarthy and had him at the white house, and he has extended the olive branch to republicans and we have seen mitch mcconnell in kentucky together, and so, the question is if the republicans will work with this president to get things done. >> is that a fair question? >> it is a fair question, and in 2013 joe biden was in the time 100, and the statement was written by joe kantor and specifically by me, and he worked with jesse helms when he was in the chair, and that is part of his dna and washington of 20 years ago, but it is not
