fees prevention act. the president trying to get both parties behind it. and it targets airline fees, resort fees. and this is an endeavor that the white house began back in october when they told all the agencies go find egregious fees, find the ones that appear to be unlawful. in the terms of banking fees, there were some banking fees that the consumer protection board found unlawful and banned right away. so they are trying to get rid of the extra costs for american families to show people that we're trying to help. >> and so one thing we heard the president tout was record job creation, millions upon millions. and improving not where we need it to be but improving inflation. but polls show that people don't feel it. they are pessimistic about biden and the economy. and having that don challenged the white house. how does he change the minds. do you think he did that last

night? >> it remains to be seen. he will go out and sell the "state of the union" address. he had a big audience yesterday. and he said the word job or jobs 23 times. we counted. and he also pointed out rightly that there is record job creation in his first two years in office. you can see that there are 12 million jobs created. in president trump's first term, it was about 4.5 million. and other frompresidents have l jobs. but people don't feel it. i think that there is exhaustion and wariness after the supply chain and death toll from covid. so that is kind of the tone that the president is trying to strike. but clearly trying to show empathy for families because he knows a lot of families aren't feeling an improving economy. >> and real wages haven't caught up. christine, thank you. for more perspective, i want to bring in our political

analyst from the "new york times." the heckling going back and forth, biden leaned into it, he almost seemed to relish going back and forth with republicans. >> it is something that the white house in talking to white house officials after the speech, they were excited about. look, there has been a strategy since the change in dynamics in congress after the midterms. the republicans taking over the house obviously makes it more difficult to pass legislation. we all know that. it is also somewhat provided the white house a little bit of a change in strategy here that they favor. and that is that they now have a photo contrast their economic policies with. i should say not all republicans are proposing to cut medicare, to cut social security. >> most aren't. >> most aren't. but the fact that you just have say senator rick scott proposing a plan like that, the white house is now pointing to that and you saw president biden lean into it. this isn't just at the "state of the union," it goes back to a

in turkey, this image says it all. that is a father whose 15-year-old daughter is now dead. he is holding her hand as her body remains trapped under the rubble. and in syria, rescuers found a brave little girl comforting her siblings under the wreckage. and in syria, more than 4 million people were already relying on humanitarian assistance. let's go to jomana karedsheh who is live in turkey with more. you were there in the aftermath, what can you tell us about the search and recovery efforts? >> reporter: efforts continue and they say this is their top priority, but of course they are facing all the challenges. here the weather is a bit warmer and dryer than other parts of

this quake zone. but there are challenges. thousands have been pulled from under the rubble of the devastated buildings. but you have thousands of buildings that have been flattened and destroyed. and the fear is is that there a more trapped under the wreckage. so is this a race against time. every second counts to try to save lives. here you are not seeing the wide scale destruction in other zones. here you see buildings that are still standing that have sustained little or no damage. and then you find buildings like this that have been flattened. we understand from rescue workers here and residents in the area, this was a 14 story residential building, they believe that about 100 people were living in that building. they don't know yet how many people were inside that building when the quake hit.
