just ahead on "cnn newsroom" -- >> verdict, guilty. verdict guilty. >> our criminal justice system worked tonight. it gave a voice to maggie and paul paul murdaugh who were brutally murdered. we didn't hear anything until plywood crashed through our window. the fbi foiling an alleged plot to kill jewish government officials in michigan. live from london, this is "cnn newsroom" with max foster. >> it is 4:00 a.m. in south carolina where alex murdaugh will find out whether he will
1:02 am
spend the rest of his life in prison. the jury found him guilty of murder in the killings of his wife and son. murdaugh will not face the death penalty. prosecutors have indicated that they will seek life in prison without the possibility of parole instead. after the verdict was reached, the lead prosecutor celebrated the jury's decision. >> justice was done today. it doesn't matter who your family is. it doesn't matter how much money you have or people think you have. it doesn't matter what you think, how prominent you are, if you do wrong, if you break the law, if you murder, justice will be done in south carolina. >> and randi kaye is there in walterboro and has this report for you. >> reporter: almost six weeks of trial, and 61 witnesses for the state in their main case, and 14

witnesses for the defense, it was certainly quite a trial here in walterboro, so much testimony, but certainly a couple things stood out, both coming from paul murdaugh's cellphone, one was the kennel video which put alex at the time of the murders at dog ken untils on the property. for many months alex murdaugh said that he was not there earlier in the night with his family and only found them there dead at the kennels and that is when he called 911. but at least 10 witnesses say they heard his voice on the video and finally he admitted being there. there is also the snapchat video that paul murdaugh sent to friends at 7:56 p.m. and that showed alex murdaugh wearing long pants and a blue shirt. later when he saw investigate tots, he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. so investigators said he had

washed up and changed clothes since killing the attempt. and now the jury found him guilty. wit . >> earlier cnn spoke with a defense attorney. >> and they convicted him with conviction. i think early on these jurors had made up their mind. and to me, the jury has spoken. i've had my heart broken by jurors many times over the years, but i really did not expect this. i did not expect a guilty verdict. i did not expect such a quick verdict. quick usually means guilty. i definitely thought that there would at least be a hung jury. only because, yes, we had this big lie, but there was also explanation for it, there was also a context for it, because while he was lying about being at the kennels, he was also
1:05 am
insisting on data exculpatory to him. and so i really thought that there was going to be somewhat of a struggle in this jury room. and i think that they couldn't get past the lie. and also frankly, i question how much of this was a jury of his own peers. this is a small town. everybody knew the murdaughs. a lot of jurors were it is missed because of their knowledge of this family and his power and privilege. and i'm not questioning jury misconduct, but, you know, i just don't think that given the state of the evidence that this was the expected result. >> cnn will have more on the story later in the hour and across the day. do stay with us. a triple threat of tornadoes, winds and rain marching across the united states.
1:06 am
there were tornado sirens in texas where at least five had been reported. wind gusts of up to 18 miles per hour were reported in parts of the state on thursday. more than 185,000 homes and businesses had knocked out power. it is now down to 140,000. and a tornado also authorize through alabama. the national weather service in huntsville said peak winds reached about 110 miles per hour. one resident explains how it came through fast and furious. >> we started to hear the wind and the rain hitting the outside of the house. so i jumped up and grabbed my son and ran to the bathroom. my hug grabbed our dog and ran into the other bathroom. and in a matter of 20 seconds, it was gone. sounded like a freight train
1:07 am
going by the house. >> no one was injured in the tornado thankfully, but it tore off roofs and ripped cars apart. this is just within of at least 90 storm reports on thursday. the storm system now moving eastward with the main threat being damaging high wind gusts and isolated tornadoes. and on the northern side of the storm, winter weather alerts are posted for chicago and detroit for friday afternoon. allison chinchar has the latest. >> yes, it has been a very busy past 24 hours. again, a significant amount of preliminary storm reports so far. the vast majority of them in states like oklahoma as well as texas. and that includes tornadoes, damaging winds and the potential for large hail. and that threat is going to continue as we push through the remainder of the day friday. but we notice the threat area begins to shift farther to the east. now you are talking cincinnati,
1:08 am
nashville, even down toward atlanta and mobile, alabama. but the threats remain the same. so here is a look at the focus for the storm in the early portion of the day friday. this system will gradually make its way off to the northeast. as it pushes into the great lakes and northeastern portion of the country, you have a lot of colder air in place. and so a lot of that rain will transition back over into a rain/snow mix and in some cases even some ice and snow filtering back in. overall the heaviest rain is going to be along the mississippi river valley, not out of the question to have two, three, or three inches total. and heaviest snow will be across portions of new england where even in excess of a foot is likely across some of those areas. widespread flash flooding is still possible. states like arkansas, areas of southeast missouri, and along the ohio river valley as well. you are talking a very tremendous amount of rain in a short period of time.
1:09 am
another very widespread concern is actually going to be the wind. and the key thing here, it is not just while the storms are occurring. even after that line of storms moves through, a lot of these states will continue with some pretty significant wind gusts up around 50, maybe even as high as 60 miles per hour. yes, everyone even after the storms exit the region. in georgia, wind advisories linger until 7:00 p.m. in the evening on friday. but again the focus is the lingering low pressure system. and states of emergency are in california after more than 100 inches of snow fallen in some areas calling avalanches and blocking roads and highways. authorities warn that it could be days before they can reach some communities in that mountainous areas. more than 42,000 homes and businesses are without power in the state. officials say that they are

unaware of any deaths linked to the storm so far. u.s. authorities are urging major freight rail companies to move quickly to ensure the safety of their train cars after investigators looking into the derailment in east palestine, ohio found melted equipment may have led to the release of toxic chemicals. officials say defective aluminum parts on three tank cars may have caused the pressure relief valves to fail. since the rderailment, resident have reported rashes, nausea and breathing difficulties. and an alleged explosive device is man was accused of trying to bring on to a train. it contains a powder consistent with fireworks. according to court documents, it was in a suitcase that marc muffley checked in for a flight

1:20 am
trying to make sure ukraine has everything that they need, it seems that there are limits to what they are willing to provide and at the moment those are fighter jets. schultz has been clear that he doesn't want to engage in the game of one ups man ship with western allies and send bigger and better weapons. and the aid package the u.s. is going to announce today is going to be sort of more of the same, more of the basics that the ukrainians really need. ammunition for artillery systems, for the himars, rocket systems, things like that. and that is important because the reality is ukraine is burning through ammunition according to the secretary-general that is at a rate higher than the rate of production. and so ukrainians will need this, they are also in extremely tough and bakhmut as you mentioned, they just lost overnight a very key supply line in and out of the town that has

antony blinken is on his way back to washington after a contentious g-20 foreign ministers meeting in new delhi. no joint communique came out. and moscow objected to language on the war in ukraine. blinken met briefly with lavrov on the sidelines, their first face-to-face in more than a year. >> lastly, i spoke briefly with russian's foreign minister lavrov on the margins of our g-20 meeting today. i urged russia to reverse its irresponsible decision and return to implementing the new s.t.a.r.t. treaty which places limits on the nuclear arsenals on the united states and russian federation. mutual compliance is in the interests of both our countries. >> blink en also said he raised the issue of detained paul wh whelan. the russian foreign ministry is calling that a lie saying
1:23 am
whelan's name never came up. kristie lu stout is standing by, but let's go to new delhi first. so they can't even have a conversation informally on the sidelines without it blowing up afterwards. >> reporter: absolutely, max. you said it. and the interesting thought is that blinken came out thursday evening in the press conference and in his statement he spoke of the three issued that he raised with lavrov, the third being that he said his words to lavrov were end this war on aggression and talk to the stakeholders. but moscow's version is a bit different. they said that it is a total lie that there was a discussion on the sidelines on paul whelan, there was no talk of it. they did admit to a discussion between the two. it lasted about ten minutes. but according to moscow, there were no negotiations. unfortunately for india that sees itself as leader of the global south of developing
1:24 am
emerging countries, they were hoping for consensus on a lot of issues. there has been an impact of this war of course, the price rise in terms of energy and food, and that is something that they wanted to focus on. but unfortunately, this entire g-20 talk of these foreign ministers was hijacked by the war of words between the u.s. and russia. and it did continue even friday morning. here is an example of what i'm trying to say. >> nobody was talking about anything other than finances and economic policies at the g-20. there is not something that the u.s. is doing believing that this -- when russia is after many years defending itself, there is nothing except ukraine
1:25 am
which is of interest for g-20. it is a shame. >> reporter: so there lavrov says that the entire g-20 talks has been hijacked by the issue of ukraine. blinken friday morning went on to say, focus on ukraine because of the message to would-be aggressors everywhere. so no joint statement really coming out from the g-20 talks of the foreign ministers.precur summit in september in india. but if this is any indication whatsoever, the sharp divide between the west and russia is only widening. >> yeah, that is a big one. thank you very much. and the secretary of state also raised the issue of china potentially supplying russia with lethal aid which the u.s. believes it is considering. kristie lu stout has more from hong kong. china saying there is no

minister. and he also once again warned of consequences but did not say what those consequences would be. and the foreign minister talked in his comments saying that beijing supports a political resolution to the crisis in ukraine and it opposes any actions that amount to adding fuel to the fire, obstructing peace talks, double standards and as well as sanctions and pressuring tactics. the diplomatic rift continues to deepen between china and the u.s. the u.s. saying again and again china is considering sending lethal aid to russia, beijing continues to deny those claims and accuses the u.s. of pouring lethal weapons into ukraine. china continues to blame it is neutral. on friday of course there was the piece planned position paper with 12 points which had no mention of the fate of occupied ukrainian territory and that plan was endorsed by lukashenko who visited beijing this week.

but also widely criticized by western leaders who accuse china of already siding with russia. so very little wonder that at the end of the meeting there was no consensus statement. china and russia refuse to condemn russia's invasion. >> okay. thank you so much. and now it is a big weekend for u.s. republicans gathering at dueling events. what that says about the state of the party. and also big question for fox news after revelations under oath that it lied to its viewers. now who will take the fall. and the top three candidates in my gear nigeria's presidenti election have all declared victory. the matter is going to the courts.
