comparisons between the candidates always came back to trial. >> i think governor desantis is wonderful and amazing. i don't think it is his time yet. if you can give it for years and i think you would be a great successor to trial. >> reporter: as former president donald trump comes to the final day of the convention. all eyes are on his message, will be distinguish himself among his growing field of rivals, his aides say expect them to do that, particularly going after ron desantis but this is far more than any two- person race this campaign is just getting underway. jeff zeleny, cnn, maryland. cnn senior political analyst ron brownstein joins me from los angeles also a senior editor at the atlantic. hello, ron, cpac mired in controversy. some conspicuous absences. is cpac still the place to be? >> not really, in the republican party. it has its internal problems
11:34 pm
with the person who runs it, the sexual misconduct by another republican but also seen as a trump subsidiary at this point. it is reflected in one way of an interesting kind of evolution and trump's appeal in the republican party when he won the first time it was surprisingly little differentiation in the support from very conservative voters to moderate voters. this time, if you look at the early polling about 2024, he is much more dependent on the conservative voices in the party and the conservative voters. you can see that reflected in the fact that he's dominant at cpac meanwhile most of the field in his backyard in south florida auditioning for the club for growth which is a conservative group that focuses on economic issues. >> meanwhile, ron desantis is visiting southern california and that of attending cpac were you surprised by that. was that a missed opportunity for him? >> first of all i think it's first going to be at the club for growth meeting.
11:35 pm
in south florida and then coming out to california and speaking to orange county republicans at the library on sunday. i think ron desantis in general is someone who is very determined to set his own path and not really follow in the organizations that dictates and leads on how he should be spending his time. but i think he has calculated as have many of the others that cpac reflects a trump stick constituency. the other event that is going on, this club for growth event is interesting because it reflects the continuation of what we saw in 2016 that a lot of the big institutions in the republican party want to stop donald trump and find someone else. when they couldn't do that and could not unify. with the alternative, when trump took the lead, they all fell in line quickly from the elected officials to the big donors and it will be interesting to see whether the opposition this time from institutional forces in the gop is more effective or more durable than it was in 2016.
11:36 pm
>> nikki haley at cpac said friday that she is running, to quote, stop the downward spiral to socialism and and the self- loathing that has taken over our country. ron desantis also painting himself as a potential candidate to take on the social left. is tackling the theme emerging from the republican candidates quest >> i think it is, certainly in the republican high mary, this week, if you are looking at the watching on conservative media, it is not the reagan issues of strong national defense, balancing budgets are cutting taxes, they're talking about attacking the left and pretty much any agenda that is seen as advancing the causes are advocating for racial equity, gender equity, more inclusion of lgbtq. all of that is being condemned as woke, and there is a lot of power in that inside a republican primary electorate, it is what ron desantis has
11:37 pm
rocketed to a position of, you know, going to help her toe with donald trump and many of these polls. it is an open question to me, though. whether this can sell beyond red america. in those white-collar swing counties outside of detroit, philadelphia and phoenix and atlanta and madison and milwaukee, that republicans have to win back to gain the presidency again. is this really an agenda that is going to bring back to those suburban voters if trump was polarizing, desantis may be the finding himself too much in a trump like manner to truly be competitive for those voters if he gets that far. >> now, donald trump will deliver the keynote address on saturday, is he still a front runner to become the republican nominee? >> i think he is, i think desantis is in a strong position against them at this point than any other candidates in the 2015 or 20 2016.
11:38 pm
i think trump is the front runner primarily because he has such a hold on the blue-collar side of the party. the basic dynamic in 2016 was that trump won the nomination because he has consolidated the blue-collar half of the party to a much greater degree than anybody consolidated the other half just a white-collar half which was very dubious even then, if you look at the early polling you can see something of the same dynamic where trump has looked strong without a college degree and he is still facing a lot of resistance among republican voters with a college degree. but they at this point are splintering more among the alternatives, desantis does have the ability to put together a cross class cross ideology coalition and pose a bigger threat i think to trump that anyone did in 2016, but that is still on paper. trump still has a big piece of the party and someone is going to have to solve a rubik's cube
11:39 pm
of putting together just enough of the blue-collar side of the white-collar side to get past his really dominant position with those working-class republicans. >> ron brownstein, thank you so very much. >> thank you. steve bannon, a former adviser to donald trump slamming rupert murdoch and fox news for disrespecting the former president. in a fiery speech at cpac, bannon branded murdoch a bunch of foreigners and gave the fox corporation chairman this ultimatum. -- >> okay, murdoch this is the way it's going to be, you have disrespected donald j trump long enough, okay. they don't respect you, read the depositions, the deposition, they have a fear of loathing and contempt for you. the murdochs immediately have to start covering president trump. >> while those depositions, bennett was talking about a related 1.6 billion dollars defamation lawsuit brought by
