soldiers to be killed , in particular on our part of the front. the fighting was intense and exhausted the enemy. you know, we are hearing this from all levels of the ukrainian military right now, that russians are exhausted. is that the reality? is that the way russians want them to see it, that they have some kind of group coming in? and how many russians really are dying right now in these battles? >> well, there's a few things going on. there seems to be at least, temporarily, i don't know if it is temporary, or on a longer- term relenting and russian attacks, that we have compared to last week when they were throwing everything into try to take bakhmut and attacking on both sides, the north and south, trying to get over the river. in the last few days, these offensive have stopped the math has not changed. what we don't know is if this is the kind of thing that is a temporary thing. but russia has been trying to take bakhmut for 8 months, eight months they've been

throwing troops at this time, they still have not been able to take it. so, i think we can say, if what the ukrainians have done, and what we don't know if what the ukrainian losses have been. the ukrainians have made that russians pay a massive price to take bakhmut. as long as the ukrainian losses themselves are not nearly as high, then that was probably the right strategic choice. it is a terrible battle, a horrible battle, but one where the russians, and some estimates, are losing five to one, that was a neato estimate, and other neato estimate is that russians in the bakhmut area could be losing 12 to 1500 casualties a day. that is not just killed, that is killed and wounded, but that the russians are losing huge numbers of troops to try to take this time, and huge numbers . >> those numbers are staggering, as you point out, 1200 to 1500 today.

you are really kind of raising the alarm about a lot of this stuff in the past weeks and months. you talked to a lot of x svb employees and what it was like, what was the culture like and what did you find? >> sure, i think the context is that silicon valley bank was the banker to silicon valley. they were financing a lot of the private startups that could not get startups from the larger banks like j.p. morgan. they were also financing the venture capital firms that were investing in them. they were financing under pet projects like wineries, giving them mortgages, doing everything to serve people in the valley. and being that banker to the valley, they began to sort of embrace the ethos of the valley. so, when the pandemic happened, the technology industry was really the biggest embrace her of work from home. a lot of the large tech companies basically sort of closed their offices, or unannounced work from home

policies. silicon valley bank followed that. they became a work from home thank, where, as you just showed in the clip, a lot of the wall street guys were beckoning people back as soon as they could picks they were aggressively doing so. you know, the ceos were working in hawaii, he was doing it too, but they put that warning in the report, this was a challenge for them. do you think that is real, that this was really a challenge for them? or that they are using that as an excuse? >> absolutely it was a huge challenge. the broader context is that when interest rates were low, capital was funneling in to tech like you couldn't even keep track of it. that money was going into silicon valley bank, they were taking the deposits and making loans or buying security. they were the real transmission mechanism for all of the money in the valley. and they grew faster than almost any other bank in america during the pandemic.

but, just think, you had executives fanned out all over the country. you know, the president was in miami, the chief risk officer was in d.c. that meant that you had to manage all of this growth , which a lot of the management picks that should be obvious, when you have a five hour time change between the ceo and the chief risk officer? >> exactly. you had to manage growth that none of these people had ever seen in their careers. they were doing that often in a remote environment picks so, the remote part, then the di, which has politically been seized upon. you know, the governor of florida, congressman james, saying well, svb was distracted by the ei. the chairman of goldman sachs told me that is laughable, susie orman says it is the most ridiculous thing she's ever heard. but, what are you hearing from ex-employees about social issues, about stuff like the ei, is that relevant? >> it is, but i would not say

it is not what caused the bank to collapse. i think broadly on wall street, even the cutthroat firms are keen to improve diversity. it is a real thing that everyone is doing. but what it really did show was a little bit of priority. this was an epic growth spurt that they were managing, and managing it remotely. and somewhat on cultural issues versus how do you culturally manage the growth? that meant that if the priorities were not solely focused on sort of risk management, and making sure the growth was controlled, it could make for some mistakes to be made picks well, it's pretty amazing and fascinating. i hope everybody reads your reports and i know you had a chance to's beak to the ceo greg becker and others involved, thank you for sharing that with us. there next, we are just learning that multiple law enforcement agencies are making

matter what ends up happening, no matter what, you have to go through an arrest, get a mug shot. what happens? >> this is the bizarre part . it this is routine. they do this hundreds of thousands of times over the course of years, but they've never done it with a former president of the united states. so, in the case of an indictment you have a defendant who is coming in with armed secret service protection, who is going to walk into one hogan plaza, the d.a.s office, go to the floor with the detective squad is, they are going to fingerprint him electronically, and photograph him for a mug shot, then he is going to sit somewhere with his attorneys while an arraignment is scheduled, all of this would be prearranged. he would go down to the arraignment where there is almost a 100% certainty he will be released on his own recognizance. in the planning process, with they have been struggling with, is what happens next? does he come out on the courthouse steps? is there a
