ingredients to help you lose fat get lean, absolutely free, rugged 321321. i'm caitlin poland's in washington, and this is cnn. this is cnn. breaking news. hello and welcome to all of you watching us here in the states, canada and around the world. i'm kim brian hooper. we begin with breaking news out of the southeastern united states, where the death toll from a severe storm system spawning multiple tornadoes across mississippi has just gone up. at
2:01 am
least 19 people are now dead in mississippi. officials report at least 13 deaths in hard hit sharkey county where homes and businesses were flattened and trees and power lines were knocked down. three others were killed in humphreys county, and at least two people are in critical condition there, and we've just learned that three more people were killed in carroll county search and rescue teams and first responders are on the scene in the hard hit areas north of jackson. we spoke with the resident from the town of rolling four who was on the phone with her grandmother when the tornado went through. listen to this. there's power lines all over the road. there's trees all over the road that there's brick buildings that are that are just laying out in the street. um actually. two houses down from my grandmother's house. everything is just a debris field that the houses are are just destroyed. alright let's get the latest now from cnn meteorologist karen mcginnis.
2:02 am
karen, unfortunately, since we spoke last hour of the death toll from this tornado has just gone up. what's the latest? yes it has. and unfortunately, rolling fork is the county seat of sharkey county is the county seat. it is still a fairly rural county a lot of that area around the mississippi delta is then you hop over to humphrey county and in black hawk. they also had fatalities there. these are small communities and to have this number of fatalities already is devastating at first responders have said. sarah's pretty much nothing left untouched, if in fact not destroyed and rolling fork, mississippi well, all of that moved towards the east, but that one tornado or so it appears. it moved from rolling fork to silver city to winona. and then
2:03 am
to amery and that crossing entire state from west central sections of mississippi to northeastern sections of mississippi, so a wide swath of territory a real estate across mississippi impacted by this very tragic, whether event that we saw several days ago this was going to be a severe weather event, and we could see long track tornadoes and that's what we saw tonight. mississippi now these storms are roaring towards the ease, but they are lacking the punch. these have weakened somewhat now. that doesn't mean you're not going to see anything. you'll see some high winds. you'll see some heavy downpours. you'll see lots of lightning. there could be some localized flooding, so there are still impact to be felt. but we don't have any tornado warnings . we don't have any tornado watches and by the way in rolling fork, there was a tornado emergency that makes it the world. worst of the worst.
2:04 am
it wasn't a tornado watch. it wasn't a tornado warning it was a tornado emergency and people who visually saw this said that it was a large, maybe a mile wide wedge tornado that they could barely see because it was rain wrapped and it was dark. so there were a lot of things that contributed to the number of fatalities that we've already seen. and kim. it looks as if that that number will be going up more than likely because this was a small town and you can imagine just the level of devastation and the small towns so many people know each other, and chances are that has a light of day comes, they'll start to assess just how long this track was. and just how devastating it was all across mississippi. absolutely right. we'll keep on top of it throughout the day. uh, as we get more more details emerging thanks so much. karen mcginnis appreciate it. one

resident in rolling fork, mississippi describes the tornadoes and the devastation left behind us. there are things out. the blackout. people just trying to get home today. check on their family like i am trying to get home to my mom's. have you? did you hear the storm company was uptown? came through. when it came through. it sounds like helicopter real real fast, and it came so fast and quick. we can do not forget about undercover. and how long did it last when he was 15 minutes, 15 minutes. i think good fire had 10 minutes that came through and ripped ripped it apart. first you all made it. who i was, i was gonna say again. you walked from the other side of town to hear over here and just power out everyone everywhere. i'm just trying to maneuver through these trees and limbs and power lines. anybody hurt? did you see anything out of people hurt? it says a lot of

2:08 am
, and russia has begun flying armed fighters over us positions in the country for the u. s and its footprint of about 900 troops in syria. focus remains isis. we don't seek a war with iran. we're not looking for an armed conflict with that country or another war in the region. we do seek to protect our mission in syria, which is about defeating isis on thursday, the commander of us central command general eric gorilla, told the house armed services committee hearing that iran and its proxies have fired drones or rockets 78 times. u. s forces since the beginning of 2021 nearly one attack every 10 days, so what iran does to hide? it's hand as they use iranian proxies. that's that's either you waves or or rockets to be able to attack our forces in either iraq or syria. are these considered acts of war? by iran. they are being done by the iranian proxies is what i would tell you, congressman, the u. s. has carried out attacks against iranian proxies in syria before targeting either enemy

infrastructure or launch vehicles used to attack u. s forces back in august, when there was a similar back and forth of strikes and attacks the administration believed after that, according to us officials , returned deterrence had been restored in syria. that's clearly no longer the case. the question for the administration is how to get there. from this point. we have seen the administration carry out a series of strikes. is that the way forward here the administration trying to avoid an escalation, but clearly knows it has to send a message with iranian proxies in the region, launching a series of attacks against a number of bases housing, u. s troops, or lieberman, cnn at the pentagon. so, as you just heard, the us maintains a relatively small but pivotal force in syria. earlier former us defense chief mark esper, who served in the trump administration, spoke to cnn about their unique mission. here he is have and have had nearly 1000 troops in syria for several years. now they were the follow on force. if you will that stayed behind once we do fight

look up from his phone and said something to the effect of there's a lot going on, cass, but i don't know. things might get real real bad. separately corcoran, a top trump attorney, and a crucial witness and special counsel, jack smith's classified documents probe, spending nearly four hours testifying behind closed doors to a federal grand jury on friday. trump also fought in court to stop his testimony. but several judges ruling corcoran must divulge information about the conversations he had with former president trump leading up to the fbi search of mara lago last summer and that corcoran must turn over handwritten notes documenting their interaction. actions they should give me immediately back everything that they've taken from because it's mine. fbi agents seized more than 100 classified documents from our lago in august, and in november , the attorney general appointed special counsel jack smith, to investigate, among other things , whether trump obstructed the government's attempts to get back all of the classified material still in his possession
2:13 am
after he left office, corker and crafted a statement in june 2022 claiming a diligent search had been conducted at mara lago, and that's all all classified documents have been returned, a source tells cnn prosecutors wanted to ask corcoran about that statement and a june phone call between him and trump that took place the same day as subpoena was issued for moral lago surveillance footage that showed boxes being moved out of a storage room. you still have the surveillance tape is that correct? absolutely sean sources tell cnn prosecutors have made clear that they believe trump used corcoran to advance a crime . a trump spokesperson has fired back, accusing the justice department of continuously stepping far outside the standard norms and an attempt to destroy the long accepted long held constitutionally based standards of attorney client privilege and executive privilege. from the beginning he has tried to cooperate, and trump attorney tim par letter tells cnn. he also testified before the grand jury in december, divulging details

about additional searches for classified documents he organized at several trump properties last year. they would rather make this into an adversarial fight and try to make it into a criminal case. special counsel jack smith will now be getting an influx of new information, both from evan corcoran being forced to testify in front of the grand jury on friday and from the array of top trump administration officials, who will now have to testify to the grand jury about what they know about what transpired on and around january 6th. our team is told that trump's legal team is expected to appeal this decision that said, these top officials cannot claim executive privilege. jessica schneider, cnn washington. the investigation into hush money payments made by former president donald trump to adult film star stormy daniels, maybe putting the manhattan district attorney's office at risk. and my p d. were called to alvin brags office friday to investigate an envelope containing white powder that was sent to the d a. police say the
